In the rough-and-tumble Old West
era, Casper promised adventure to
all who traveled its famous trails.
We’ve come a long way from our days as a rugged frontier
outpost, but the same sense of free-wheeling adventure
and independent spirit still draws visitors to Wyoming’s
Adventure Capital. With one foot in the past and an
eye toward the future, Casper is a winter destination that
offers the very best in historical, recreational, cultural and
entertainment experiences.
If you’re looking to reconnect with nature the old-fashioned
way, spend the day fishing for trophy-sized rainbow and
brown trout that thrive in the historic North Platte River —
the same river that challenged early settlers on their historic
pilgrimage west on the Oregon, California, Pony Express,
and Mormon Trails. True outdoorsmen will also appreciate
the area’s wide variety of game animals, including antelope,
deer, elk, pheasant, and duck.
Casper Mountain — a difficulty to traverse in those
early years — is today a wonderland for those who love
to explore the colors of Fall. The mountain also offers

Hogadon Ski Area for snowboarding and alpine skiing,
while snowmobiling and nordic skiing are always an
option, thanks to the mountain’s extensive trail system.
But don’t think that adventure has to be a purely physical,
outdoor experience. In Casper, adventure awaits the
mind and spirit as well. For modern pioneers, Casper
offers up history in comfort with many museums and
historical sites. The National Historic Trails Interpretive
Center celebrates those brave souls who helped establish
the Adventure Capital, while the Nicolaysen Art Museum
and the kid-friendly Science Zone provide inspiration for
the creative soul.
Just as Casper’s forerunners balanced the hardships of
day-to-day life with a love of the arts, today you’ll find a wide
range of cultural opportunities here. ARTCORE, Stage III
Theatre, The Casper Children’s Chorale, The Wyoming
Symphony Orchestra and Casper College each deliver
cultural experiences in a variety of mediums: music, dance,
theatre and visual arts, to name a few. And Casper Events
Center boasts The Best of Broadway series which will keep
even the most devout city slicker entertained through the
cold winter months.
MUSEUMS AND THE ARTS
PRONGHORNS, the fastest mammals
in North America, actually outnumber
humans in the state of Wyoming. This is one
of the many factors that makes the Casper
area tops for world-class proghorn antelope,
mule deer and elk hunting.

A great way to enjoy Casper
Mountain’s Winter Wonderland is skimming
across its 45 miles of groomed trails on a
snowmobile. Find out why Adventure Guide
David Higbee thinks that Casper has “some
of the best riding in the whole country.”

don’t take too long — Casper Mountain is spectacular in the
morning, and Hogadon offers endless outdoor excitement with
its 40 miles of snowmobile trails and variety of skiing and snowboarding options. The restaurant and lounge provide a toasty
respite from the chilly temps, as well as a delicious menu ranging
from hot chocolate to juicy burgers.

vacation. With kid-friendly shopping, sports, education

of being the next ski star, or catching some air on their
snowboard, Hogadon’s the place to play! Only 20 minutes
from town, the mountain offers other great options, too, like
cross-country skiing around the Casper Nordic Center
(307.235.4772), or snowmobiling over 45 miles of groomed

climb Everest? Let them try scaling the rock-climbing wall
at Old Town Family Fun (307.266.4653) or The Peak
Climbing Gym (307.472.4084). Or, if the snow isn’t piled
too high, take a stroll in the crisp, fresh air along the nearby
Platte River Parkway, a 10-mile long trail that connects
many community parks, playgrounds, and recreational
areas. And remember, one of the most exciting events of
the year for sports enthusiasts young and old happens
December 13, when the Wyoming Shootout returns to
the Adventure Capital! It’s basketball fun you won’t want to
miss, so make sure to plan ahead for this busy weekend!
(307.237.4935). Maps of Casper, e-mail access, bus
schedules and information about local attractions make
this a helpful stop while you’re visiting the downtown area.

“
Casper is sure to be a memorable stop on your next family

When it’s time to eat, Casper offers a number of equally
delicious options. Nothing shakes off the winter chills like a
Mexican fiesta, so consider a trip to La Cocina (307.266.1414) to

fajitas and authentic margaritas. Or bring the family together for
an Asian dining experience at Dsasumo (307.237.7874). Start
with the lettuce wraps, sample the pad thai, or be brave and
order from the delicious sushi menu!
The only place more scenic than Casper Mountain in the
morning is Casper Mountain on a snowy evening. Make
the trip back up and let the moon and stars
be your guide as you enjoy some peaceful

A BEVY OF BIRDS
OPEN SEASON FOR ADVENTURE
WINGSHOOTING & WATERFOWL IN CASPER
Anyone with a taste for the thrill of the chase
will love the sport of bird hunting in Casper. It provides visitors
with the opportunity to enjoy the great outdoors, spend some
time with man’s best friend, and take advantage of Wyoming’s
generous bag limits.
According to Adventure Guide Sy Gilliland, this is part of
what makes the Casper area tops for world-class pronghorn
antelope, mule deer and elk hunting. Gilliland,
owner of S-N-S Outfitter & Guide Service
(307.266.4229) knows that you don’t have
to travel far from Casper for an epic hunting
adventure.
PAGE

“For pronghorn, you can’t go
wrong anywhere in Natrona
County,” he says. “There’s
also a lot of opportunity west
of Casper because there’s
more public land. Mule deer,
of course, are anywhere
around rough country —
the Bates Hole area and the second range of the Hat
Six area. And there’s some real good prairie mule deer
hunting, too, just northeast of Casper in the sand-hills.”
Of course, a successful hunt should also be a relaxing
hunt, which is why an outfitting service makes sense.
“When a client arranges a hunt through an outfitter, it’s a
worry-free event,” says Gilliland. “The license application
is taken care of, as well as all of the scheduling. If a client
is flying in, we’ll pick them up at the airport and take
them to the motel they’ve reserved or the camp they’ve
arranged. We’ll even suggest places for their clients to
eat and shop.”

“And of course, we’re
knowledgeable on the local game laws
because they do vary from state to state.” Gilliland
also points out that Casper offers a full range of
post-hunt services. “After the animals are harvested,
they can be taken to any local meat processor or
taxidermist. They can even accommodate shipping
of the final product for hunters, so that everything is
handled from start to finish.”
Perhaps most importantly, a professional outfitter will
also take care of the gear a client will need. “Generally,
we’ll send them out a complete equipment list, right
down to the types of socks to bring, how many pairs of
pants and coats. Once they get here, they’ll want to hit
Rocky Mountain Discount Sports (307.265.6974) and

Planning your next hunt in Casper can be a lifechanging experience. As Gilliland puts it, “When you
go home, you’ll remember all the things that happened
on the hunt — the sunrises and the sunsets, and herds
of antelope going across the prairie — the memories
are just phenomenal.” And with Casper’s variety of
game animals, beautiful terrain, and the complete
dedication to service and satisfaction, everyone from
the weekend gamer to United States Senators find
Casper to be an ideal hunting destination.
The advantages of having a guide are even more
apparent during the hunt. “The guide is going to provide

Another popular game bird in Wyoming is the native sage
grouse. The North Platte Lodge (307.237.1182) offers guided
hunts for these large birds, but the grouse season lasts only 10
days in Wyoming, so plan ahead! The North Platte Lodge also
offers “Cast and Blast” packages, which allows guests to combine
a guided waterfowl or upland bird hunt with an afternoon of fishing
for trophy sized trout— the perfect combination for the sportsman
who just can’t get enough of Casper’s wide open spaces!
For more information about bird hunting rules, regulations, and
limits, be sure to visit the State of Wyoming’s Game and Fish

Casper and the surrounding area are synonymous with
great hunting, affordable prices, and excellent facilities close
to town. One such facility is Crazy Rainbow Wingshooting
(307.234.6905), located along the scenic North Platte River.
There, hunters encounter a bevy of seasonal birds including
Hungarian partridge, pheasant, chukkar, quail, duck, goose
and dove. Typical hunts yield 20-25 birds, and they even offer
a kennel of hunting dogs for the visiting hunter’s convenience.
What’s more, hunting enthusiasts will appreciate amenities such
as their six-station shooting deck, heated duck blinds, state-ofthe-art cleaning stations, and a sportsman’s lounge.

OLD-FASHIONED THRILLS & SPILLS
Is there anything better than a snow day? Kids
staying home from school, begging to go outside to play in the
frozen drifts, coming inside only when their fingers are too cold
to pack snow and ice into a nice, round snowball. But why let the
kids have all the fun? Declare your own snow day! Bundle up
for an afternoon of good, old-fashioned sledding on Casper
Mountain’s Sledding Hill. Located just half a mile
north of the Casper Nordic Center, folks of all ages
will love whooshing down its pristine slopes. It’s a great
way for families to spend quality time together in the
crisp mountain air.
. . . skimming over the trails at 35 mph is a thrilling way
to explore it. Just ask Adventure Guide Don Higbee,
owner of Karst Motor Sports (307.237.7680). “My
favorite thing about the mountain is being able to go up
there with the family and having it in such close proximity
to Casper.” A lifelong enthusiast of
snowmobiling and ATVing, Higbee
speaks from experience. He and his
family just recently moved here, but
“we’ve been visiting Wyoming for
15 years. We’re really glad to be
in town.”

Wyoming’s Adventure Capital. A great many trails can
be accessed at Beartrap Meadow, the trailhead for
snowmobiling on Casper Mountain. Located straight up
Casper Mountain Road and just minutes from downtown,
its parking lot is the perfect place to park a trailer and head
out on the groomed trails. From there, you can follow welldefined tracks over to Muddy Mountain and drop into
some of the larger, deeper powder snow known for great
backcountry riding.
Easy access and well-groomed trails are just a few of
the area’s highlights, according to Higbee. “It’s a good
area for the beginning and mid-range type of snowmobiler
to come and enjoy some of Wyoming’s scenery,” he says.
“What attracts the beginning snowmobiler to Casper
Mountain is the detail that the county uses on plowing the
different roads, and making sure that Beartrap Meadow
is easily accessible. My daughter is just learning how to
ride, and we allow her to ride up there.” Higbee notes,
however, that the mountain features a variety of different
terrain, offering something for all levels of snowmobilers.
As with any other sport, safety is a key consideration
when you head out into the mountains. Higbee suggests

an easier task . . . it’s a long way to the top!
As for the gear you’ll need? There are a couple of
local shops that can outfit you in grand style. First,
you’ll need to get a season permit, which is available
for $25 from Natrona County (307.235.9370). Then,
check out Higbee’s shop for a full range of machines,
clothing and helmets. You will also find snowmobiles
and accessories for sale at Casper Mountain
Motorsports (307.266.4930) and Just For Kicks
(307.265.0228).
If flying down Casper Mountain seems a little too adventurous
for your taste head over to Washington Park (S. McKinley &
15th). The trees make an ideal “war” zone for a family snowball
fight, and the open areas are the perfect canvas for a series of
snow angels. Plus, there’s a great hill for sledding. And if there’s
no snow? Hit a convenience store and pick up a block of ice ...
you haven’t lived if you haven’t tried ice block sledding!
While snowmobiling is a favorite pastime for Higbee
and his family, Higbee believes “what makes Casper
so attractive is the variety of outdoor activities that
are available to everybody.” When visiting Casper
Mountain, Higbee says visitors should be sure to
explore other options, such as nordic skiing and
sledding. “It just makes for a good family day.”

TREKKING THE BACK COUNTRY PATHS
If Nordic Skiing is your thing, the Casper Nordic
Center (307.235.4772) with its 42 kilometers of groomed trails
is a great place to glide. Located on Casper Mountain just
minutes from downtown, the Nordic Center offers not only crosscountry skiing by day, but a lighted loop for night skiing. There
are trail levels for all abilities, so grab your poles and go!
Early snow and great terrain are two fantastic reasons to

reminds us, it’s an easy journey to the slope “It’s only
twenty minutes away from town. You can ride up there
in less than a half an hour.” Another great feature,
he points out, is the lack of long lines that are usually
seen at larger ski resorts.
. . . pack up your gear and head to Hogadon Ski Area
(Casper Mountain, 307.234.8499) for some winter
adventure in Casper! Whether you’re looking to cruise
downhill on skis or catch some air with your ‘board,
Hogadon offers 600 vertical feet of terrain for riders of
all levels.
The conditions at Hogadon are typically “packed
powder...they keep it groomed nicely; they try to buff
out the icy patches.” He goes on to say, “Your bunny
hills for the beginners are a little bit more flat. Medium
level hills, they’re going to be a lot steeper, and take a
little bit more experience to go down. Work your way
up to the terrain park — that’s going to enable you to
do tricks — bust out some aerials or hit up some rails
or something more advanced. Then they’ve got black
diamonds that are just steep all the way down — very
straight and very steep.”
Adventure Guide Ian Delap, manager at a local
skateboard/snowboard retailer, has been shredding
Casper Mountain since he was about 12 or 13 years
old. “Basically, I got into it because I skateboarded a
lot,” he says. “I couldn’t really skate during the winter,
so I picked up a snowboard. It’s just relaxing, it’s fun —
it takes your mind off everything.”
Located just 11 miles south on Casper Mountain,
Hogadon offers something for skiers and snowboarders
at every level. There’s even a terrain park for
more adventurous riders.

If you’re new to the sport and deciding between
investing in skis or a snowboard, Delap offers a few
pointers: With skis, there are poles to help keep you in
the upright position! Snowboarding tends to treat your
knees with a little more kindness, but can put more
stress on your ankles. And while powder is great for
snowboarding, skis work well on bumpy, icy terrain.

Passes are required to access the trails, and can be purchased

available, too, through arrangements with the Nordic Lodge.
Although it’d be awesome to step onto the

LIVE MUSIC
CROSSROADS OF CULTURE
HITTING THE STAGE IN CASPER
Ever since the vaudeville days of the early 20th
century, live music has been a staple of Casper’s nightlife.
And while those original stages have long since vanished, the
live music scene in Casper continues to impress, offering jazz,
rock, country, and dance music in a variety of comfortable clubs.
But for Adventure Guide Jude Carino, repeating the past
is all a part of the fun! As Director of Casper’s National
Historic Trails Interpretive Center (307.261.7700),
Carino knows a thing or two about Western heritage.
With the Oregon, Mormon, California, and Pony
Express Trails all converging in Casper, “every one of the

experience a virtual ride across the North Platte River
in a covered wagon! But the Center is just one of many
museums that make Casper a superb classroom. “People
must also go see Fort Caspar (307.235.8462),” Carino
asserts. The Fort, which started as a trading post in 1859,
is an open air museum today, featuring a brand new indoor
museum as well as renovated wooden buildings and
even a wooden stockade! Modern history buffs will also
want to make a point of visiting the Wyoming Veteran’s
Museum (307.472.1857), which commemorates all wars
and branches of the military.
When you’re ready to slide back into the present, Carino
reminds us that Casper has several modern offerings.
“This town has amazing facilities,” Carino gushes. Pick
any furry critter, any moment in history, or even your
favorite artist, and you’ll find a museum in Casper to go
along with it. Start with The Nicolaysen Art Museum &
Discovery Center (307.235.5247) — “Art lovers of the
world come and see it!” With over 25,000 square feet of
space and nine galleries, you’ll want to block out a few
hours to take it all in. Past shows have highlighted the
works of Andy Warhol and Carol Swinney, and if you’re
lucky you’ll catch an auction, art show or festival during
your visit.
“
There’s also the Tate Geological Museum
(307.268.2447), which boasts over 3000 fossil and
mineral specimens, including dinosaurs. Or, if you prefer
slightly more modern flora and fauna, be sure to drop
by the Werner Wildlife Museum (307.235.2108) and
the Audubon Center at Garden Creek (307.473.1987).
Each of these facilities offers a unique experience with
local wildlife, from galleries of mounted specimens to
actual habitat exploration and hiking.
Not all museum experiences are limited to the daytime.
The Casper Planetarium (307.577.0310) hosts a variety
of programs, literally depending on how and when the
stars align! Another favorite for kids and parents alike
is The Science Zone (307.473.9663).
“It’s very hard to find ways to
engage children in a learning
situation,” Carino explains, “but the
Science Zone has done it.” Some of
the excitement includes the Bubble
Zone, an entire room dedicated to
making awesome bubbles, and the
Zoo Zone, which showcases live
reptiles, spiders and mammals from
all over the world.
. . .Every one of the [emigrants] walked through what is now Casper;
every person saw Casper Mountain as we see it today.”
A must-see for country music and line dancing fans is the
recently renovated Beacon Club (307.577.1503) in Mills. Rebuilt on the site where the original building stood, those who go
“Sneakin’ to the Beacon” enjoy a new, bigger bar and dance floor.
Regular acts perform live Tuesday through Saturday nights, so
grab your cowboy boots and scoot on over!
If you are the type that prefers scattin’ to scooting, you’ll enjoy
The Jazz Spot (307.235.5299), an intimate dinner club where
folks of all ages can eat, drink, and listen to the sweet rhythms
of cool blues and white-hot jazz. Local two-piece “trio” The
Tremors (TheTremors.com) are frequently spotted playing there.
And located just down the road at the Parkway Plaza, All That
Jazz (307.235.1777) is another hotspot for jazz-minded adults.

These are just a few of the reasons that Casper is a
great choice for conventions and meetings. With more

events both big and small. In addition, Casper is centrally
located within the Rocky Mountain Region, which makes
it very convenient. And, Erickson adds, “Casper offers an
exceptional combination of dining, shopping, historical,
cultural, and leisure activities.”
Erickson’s job is to provide assistance to any group
looking to host an event in Casper. “I ask planners
questions about their meeting pattern — is it Monday
through Friday, or is it a weekend event? Is it an all-day
event? Are food functions involved? Is there a trade
show? How many sleeping rooms will be needed?”
“I think the service we provide is what draws people here,”
says Stephanie Erickson, Director of Conventions and

Motor Coach Tours are often theme-related — historical tours,
educational tours, mountain biking, adventure groups — all of
which are well represented in Casper. In fact, the community
caters to those with a broad range of interests: “Adventure can go
from seeing a deer or pronghorn antelope in the wild to catching
a minor league baseball game to touring the scenic Fremont
Canyon in a pontoon boat,” Freeman says. “Some Motor Coach
Tours will come in and not everyone will want to do the same
thing. We try to offer them a variety of opportunities.”
As for the Touring companies themselves? Freeman says
there are many advantages for Tour companies when the
CACVB assists in the planning of their itineraries. In addition
to a dedicated staff and planning assistance, the CACVB also
offers tour operators other perks, like
sponsoring or hosting a meal.
