A Message from the Headmaster—Mr. Rick
A Message from the Headmaster—Mr. Rick Johnson Thank you for taking time to read the 2012-13 Annual Report for Springwood School. This report summarizes the 43rd year of operation at Springwood. We concluded the academic year in May by celebrating at the 40th Graduation ceremony witnessing another 25 well-prepared Springwood graduates receive their high school diplomas. All of these have enrolled in college or military service. I’ve spoken to several who have had a positive start on the next step in their journey. As I experienced the whirlwind of my first year, it was evident that Springwood is involved with good people. One example of this is our PTO which led the way with a significant contribution to our annual fund and also at the outset of this school year opened and currently manages our school spirit store. We have respect throughout the community for the education that is provided along with the work accomplished. I believe in the pages of this report you will see examples of this from the numerous accomplishments and recognitions achieved. I do want to express my appreciation to our Board of Trustees, under the leadership of CVEF President Ellen Collins, for the countless hours of work to help Springwood become a reality for so many families. I believe we have a united and focused Board that is continually seeking to do what is best for the school. Mission Statement: Again, this year Ann Hixon has edited the Annual Report. The data and information comes from a variety of sources but Ann does a terrific job putting it As a college preparatory school, all together to display such an impressive report. We also acknowledge the Springwood is dedicated to providing faculty and staff of Springwood for their dedication and devotion. These are educators that consistently provide instruction to students and invest time in a quality education in a nurturing each student outside the classroom. environment, focusing on mind, body, and spirit. All of this would not be possible if we did not have parents who support this philosophy of education. It is refreshing to hear from parents who are committed to independent education in a Christian environment. The sacrifice made in order to have children in this type of environment is significant. We are grateful. We also express appreciation to others who through their gifts of time, talent, and treasure make attending this school possible for some who otherwise would not be able. Finally, I am reminded that Scripture tells us in Psalm 127:1, “Unless the Lord builds the house, the builders labor in vain. Unless the Lord watches over the city, the guards stand watch in vain”. Please know of our unwavering commitment … Educating for Today, Tomorrow, and Eternity. Back : Steve Tramell, Al Vester, Eddie Clark, & Skip McCoy Letter from CVEF Board of Trustees President—Ellen Lanier Collins Dear Springwood Family, Recently, I had the opportunity to lead the founder of our endowment management firm on a tour of Springwood classrooms. Afterwards, she was very eager to express “how fortunate you are at Springwood to have a campus where students are so actively engaged in the educational process.” It was a reminder of how blessed we really are to be part of the Springwood School family. It was also a reminder of how critical every member of our family is … our teachers, staff, administration, and you! This past 2012 -13 school year proved to be one of change and accomplishments: We equipped 25 graduates to enter the next phase of their lives. We adopted a Statement of Faith which undergirds Springwood’s Mission and Vision. We approved a long awaited renovation of Boswell gymnasium. We engaged in ongoing strategic planning that will ensure the sustainability of Springwood for years to come. The CVEF is dedicated to the mission of this school. Our outstanding faculty is raising the bar to meet (and exceed) college preparatory instruction and curriculum requirements. We are building our physical education and athletic programs to strengthen and build our students. Our Statement of Faith governs the culture in which we live and learn at Springwood. Thus, we strive to fulfill our goal to equip each student’s mind, body, AND spirit so they can face the challenges of the world. Yes, Springwood is “college prep,” but we’re even more: we are “life-prep” for their journey ahead. Rick Johnson is in his second year as Headmaster. Mr. Johnson is a visionary leader who not only understands the day-to-day operations of the school but also provides direction for the days ahead. As a board, we appreciate the stability and clarity his wisdom has brought to Springwood. Mr. Johnson’s dedication and loyalty to this school and its mission has been a blessing. As we move into the New Year, the support of family and friends is vital to this school. Please know you are appreciated. If we have inadvertently omitted or misprinted any name, please advise us of any errors and accept our sincere apologies. Springwood PTO—Off to a Busy Start in 2013-14! At its first meeting of the 2013-14 school year, the Springwood School PTO held a “Grand Opening” of the brand new Wildcat Spirit Store located in the school's Fine Arts Center. The store has been open on football game days this fall and features shirts, shakers, buttons, face stickers, car tags, blankets, tailgating chairs, and more. Local vendors were used to supply the store's merchandise, and it is staffed by PTO volunteers. Shown cutting the ribbon is (left to right) Jenna Brown, PTO President; Hollie Zachry, PTO Vice-President and Amanda Moon, Fundraising Co-chairman. On September 12, PTO hosted a New Parents Breakfast at the school. This event was a great opportunity for new families to get to know some of the Springwood staff, PTO board members and PTO classroom representatives. PTO Today Magazine and ptotoday.com conducted a nationwide search for the “2013 Parent Group of the Year”. Springwood PTO was selected for an honorable mention award and was recognized on the magazine's website. PTO sponsored a football game spirit banner signed by every Springwood student. The PTO magazine sale generated $3,339.60 for Springwood School! In addition, a total of 65 chickens were sent through Save the Children to needy families in other countries. Congratulations to Mrs. Cooper's K4 who was the top selling class. Many thanks to everyone who helped support this project! 2013-14 PTO Officers and Classroom Representatives Officers: President - Jenna Brown Vice President - Hollie Zachry Teacher Appreciation - Jenifer Ewing and Stephanie Wilkerson New Families - Beth Fagundes Field Day - Cory and Landra Cooper; Angela and Shane Hurst Hospitality - Holley Terry Box Tops and Campbell's Labels - Lisa Spradlin Fundraising/School Spirit Store- Angela Hurst & Amanda Moon Elementary Classroom Reps: K4 – Katrina Huguley K5 – Amanda Moon 1st – Stephanie Wilkerson 2nd – Angela Hurst 3rd – Amber Sides 4th– Misty Champion 5th – Melanie McGinnis 6th – Emily Plank High School Classroom Reps: 7th – Darenda Huguley 8th – John Hart 9th – Linda Linch 10th – DeDe King 11th – Traci Martin 12th – Sharon Cowart Back to School 2013-14 Senior Prayer Walk with Parents First Day of School
