Summer Reading 2016
This year, to meet the summer reading requirement, students must select and read one book and be prepared to share information about their book in class by September 23rd. Students will participate in a detailed book talk which will be included in their first quarter language arts grade. This is an open ended assignment. Just read, enjoy, and be prepared to discuss your book. Students may prepare visuals to support their presentation if they choose. Students may select any book they like, but it should be a book they’ve never read before and at their reading level. In this packet, you will find book recommendations from Pikesville Middle School language arts and reading teachers and recommendations from the Baltimore County Public Library. Please visit readkiddoread.com for more book recommendations organized by age level. Nimona , by Noelle Stevenson is the first graphic novel I ever read and I loved it! I’ve also had many students tell me that it is one of their favorite books. The main character, Nimona, is a shapeshifter who is funny and loves trouble. Lord Ballister Blackheart is a villain with a vendetta. Together Nimona and Lord Blackheart wreak havoc! Mrs. Grogin Ms. Getty I love The Limit by Kristen Landon. It is a thrilling adventure in which Matt is taken away from his family and placed in a workhouse to pay off his family’s debts. He has a great time working on computers until he realizes he trapped and figures out why he’s really there. Exciting! Another favorite is The Stratford Zoo Midnight Review Presents Macbeth by Ian Lendler and Zach Giallongo. It’s a fantastic, funny graphic novel about a zoo whose animals come out after midnight and perform Shakespeare’s play. I can’t wait for the sequel coming out soon in which the animals put on Romeo and Juliet! Among the Hidden, the first book in the Shadow Children series by Margaret Peterson Haddix, is a great read for lovers of dystopian fiction and suspense. It plays with the question of population control: what happens when families are only allowed to have two children, and third children, or “shadow children,” have to lead secret lives away from the rest of the world or risk being killed? Mrs. Hendrix-Martin Ms. Morlock Miss Peregrine's Home For Peculiar Children by Random Riggs is the first in a trilogy of books following children who are, well, peculiar! They all have different abilities: some physical, some mental, but their kind is being hunted down. What makes this book even better is that there are authentic pictures that inspired the stories so you can see what the original inspiration was! If none of these things interest you, Tim Burton has started directing the movie version of this novel and it is set to come out in theaters next year. 2016 Pikesville Middle School Recommended Summer Reading List Incoming 6th Grade Incoming 6th Grade Self-Discovery Anything But Typical El Deafo ◊ The Penderwicks* Al Capone Does My Shirts* Raymie Nightingale Out of My Mind The Skin I’m In The Dumbest Idea Ever!
