EDITION 3 / DECEMBER 2015 Dear readers, Churchill once said that we should not be afraid of the future but should concentrate instead on thinking and planning ahead. This applies to all areas of life, including intraloThe CeMAT Move & Lift exhibition area is also situated on the open air site. Lifting to a new level MOVE & LIFT The Move & Lift exhibition area is the largest area at CeMAT. It essentially comprises three main focal points: first, industrial trucks with the traditional forklift providers. Complete solutions such as increasing automation are the focus here. The best machines are also given the IFOY Award on the first day of the exhibition. THE CeMAT BAROMETER: FIGURE OF THE MONTH 80% of CeMAT visitors are decision-makers with purchasing and procurement authority. Second are the cranes and hoists, which will have their own exhibition area next year in the “Cranes and Lifting Equipment Pavilion” in Hall 27, with a shared stand of the same name. Everything from the simplest load-bearing equipment to fully automated cranes will be on display. Industry 4.0 also plays a part here. And third is the lifting and high-level access technology, one of the highlights of the open-air site in Hanover. Here the manufacturers of working and mast-climbing platforms, telescopic forklifts, ladder lifts, mini caterpillar and industrial cranes unveil their latest machines. You can read about the role that the Asian market is playing for German and European intralogistics companies on pages 4/5. gistics. New concepts and technologies are always being developed in research and practice and pioneering applications are being unveiled in intralogistics. While technologies such as virtual reality, the internet of things, intelligent agents and driverless means of transport were still regarded as visions of the future just a few years ago, they are now already being used in practice. Smart solutions of this sort make it possible to manage the increasing complexity of intralogistics processes and accommodate the growing focus on customers. The whole range of modern intralogistics sys- tems will be on show at CeMAT 2016. You are cordially invited to take a look at them. We hope you enjoy reading this edition. Prof. Nina Vojdani Chair of Production Organisation and Logistics (LPL) at the University of Rostock and President of the Wissenschaftliche Gesellschaft für Technische Logistik e. V. (Academic Association for Technical Logistics (WGTL)). Next day delivery begins in the warehouse Online retail customers have high expectations when it comes to speed of delivery. Material flow technology in shipping and parcel centres must therefore also be in top form. The BEUMER Group offers high-performance sorting and distribution systems for mail-order retailers and CEP service providers. E-COMMERCE Ordered online in the late afternoon, delivered to your front door the next morning: customers’ expectations of internet shopping are high. Next day delivery has now become standard. The pressure on delivery times is also having an effect on logistics. The narrow time window requires online dealers to 2 LOGISTICS INSIDER · December 2015 have larger warehouse capacities and a higher density of sorting and distribution centres. Staff in distribution centres must process more and more orders in an ever shorter time. These requirements have an effect on material flow technology. Essentially it is becoming more complex and, at the same time, more in- Title photos: Deutsche Messe AG, University of Rostock With flexible crossbelt sorters from the BEUMER Group, mail-order retailers and service providers can ensure efficient and consistent processing of goods. tegrated because it must be possible to adapt intralogistics plants and systems flexibly to various tasks and workloads. The BEUMER Group has already delivered numerous projects for e-commerce providers and their service providers. For example, shuttle warehouses with a high storage/removal frequency above 10,000 units an hour are suitable for handling containers or boxes with A, B and even C items with a high availability. The link between incoming goods, the shuttle warehouse, the order picking workstations and outgoing goods is created by a crossbelt sorter. This sorting solution provides very high distribution capacity of over 10,000 containers an hour. Along with the distribution of containers and boxes, crossbelt sorters are ideal for careful handling of products of all sorts, irrespective of their size, shape or surface properties. This characteristic allows them to meet the specific requirements of mail-order retail companies. Shipping from outgoing goods to the customer’s front door or to a collection point is handled by CEP service providers. They have an extensive network of sorting centres and branch offices and provide a delivery service. Their systems are mainly designed for the traditional range of parcels. Significantly increasing parcel quantities with a simultaneous fall in parcel size is pushing their capacity to the limit, however. Another challenge: internet shopping forces service providers to make their collections as late as possible. This leaves less and less time for sorting. In order to increase capacity on the existing premises of CEP service providers, BEUMER has developed a machine-based bulk unloading system for swap bodies in the form of the BEUMER Parcel Picker. By replacing manual unloading, it makes significantly higher throughput possible. The semi-automatic machine eases the burden of heavy physical work on staff and simultaneously increases productivity. The parcels have to be separated individually in order to process the bulk flow efficiently. BEUMER provides a singulator for this purpose which is adapted to the discontinuous operation of a loop sorter feed. Photos: BEUMER Group GmbH & Co. KG (2), Fraunhofer IIS/David Hartfiel, Deutsche Messe AG FROM THE INDUSTRY BEST PRACTICE Smart order-picking in the context of Industry 4.0 INNOVATIONS On 14 January 2016, CeMAT and the specialist magazine MM Logistik are holding an event under the title “Smart order-picking in the context of Industry 4.0” in Würzburg. It starts at 10.30 a.m. at Vogel Business Media and the event ends at 4.30 p.m. Leading manufacturers such At the new DPD hub in Hickley in the UK, BEUMER has installed extensive sorting, as Viastore, BEUMER and SSI distribution and conveying equipment. Schäfer will be presenting examples of best practice and offering their perspective on how order picking will change over the coming years. You can register at www.cemat.de/de/programm/mm-logistik Sensor networks for order picking PbLL is relatively energy-efficient and low-maintenance, in contrast to other solutions. RESEARCH PROJECT The aim of the Pick-by-Local-Light (PbLL) research project is to develop an innovative order picking system based on wireless sensor networks. The S-Net technology of the Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits IIS involving energy-saving, wireless, self-organising sensor networks enables simple installation of the compartment display nodes on the shelving, thus facilitating temporary warehouse structures and quick conversion of withdrawal boxes and shelves. The PbLL research project is being supported by the AiF until March 2016 and the broad project consortium ensures that the results will be transferred to business. The dialogue between visitors, exhibitors and other industry experts is a central component of CeMAT. Logistics IT and Automation forum at CeMAT SOFTWARE The Logistics IT and Automation forum will be a new initiative at CeMAT 2016. For the first time, exhibition visitors will have the opportunity to find out about topical issues at a central point – at the heart of the Logistics-IT world. In addition to software solutions for intralogistics and transport logistics, the focus is also on automation topics such as sensors and image processing. The content of the forum is being delivered by the VDMA Software Association, an ideal partner for the entire exhibition area of Logistics IT, the Fraunhofer Institute for Material Flow and Logistics (Fraunhofer IML) and the Forum FTS, among other organisations. Immediately alongside the Logistics IT exhibition area, both short and specialist presentations and podium discussions with logistics experts will be addressing current issues in the Forum of Hall 27 on all four exhibition days. These include topics such as the revolution in logistics as a result of apps and smart devices, traceability in the value creation network, driverless mobility as the key to Industry 4.0, successful introduction of warehouse management systems, data integration and visualisation along the supply chain and challenges for the digital supply chain. More information about the topics is available at www.cemat.de LOGISTICS INSIDER · December 2015 3 4 TOP FEATURE At CeMAT ASIA, exhibitors presented products and solutions for automated and networked logistics processes. Stephan Schostok, mayor of Hanover, and Dr. Andreas Gruchow, member of the board of Deutsche Messe AG, at the Continental stand. Asia in focus The Asian market is playing an ever more important role for German and European intralogistics providers. This was also evident at CeMAT ASIA, the most important intralogistics trade fair on the continent. INTERNATIONALISATION The Asian market is playing an ever more important role for German and European intralogistics providers. With a significant increase in area, CeMAT ASIA drew to a close in Shanghai at the end of October. More than 470 exhibitors presented new products and solutions for automated and networked logistics processes over an exhibition area of 47,000 square metres. It was thus the largest CeMAT ASIA since it was launched 15 years ago. Over 70,000 visitors came to the Shanghai International Exhibition Centre (SNIEC) to find out about the new technologies in the fields of intralogistics, drive and fluid technology, compressed air technology and industrial supplies – because Deutsche Messe AG organised PTC ASIA, ComVac ASIA and Industrial 4 LOGISTICS INSIDER · December 2015 Supply ASIA to coincide with CeMAT ASIA. A total of 2,200 companies (2014: 1,900) exhibited over an area of 155,500 square metres (2014: 135,500). The exhibitors included leading manufacturers such as Continental, Dematic, Interroll, Jungheinrich, HeLi, Kardex, KNAPP, Linde Material Handling, Muratec, SSI Schäfer, Swisslog and Vanderlande. China remains the most attractive market According to the VDMA, China is still the largest market for German intralogistics in Asia. In 2014, companies from Germany exported intralogistics products and expertise with a total value of EUR 710 million to China. Intralogistics imports from China to Germany had a volume of EUR 190 million in 2014. India, the second gigantic market in Asia, is sill not living up to economic expectations. From the point of view of German intralogistics providers, exports have stabilised again in 2014 at EUR 149 million after two years of contraction. “Germany’s Industry 4.0 initiative has attracted a great deal of attention worldwide and had a significant influence on the ‘Made in China 2025’ strategy, since this is also based on the Industry 4.0 concept and is intended to revolutionise production processes by means of smart manufacturing procedures and logistics concepts”, explains Wolfgang Pech, Head of Division at Deutsche Messe AG. “Our strongest brands worldwide, PTC MDA and CeMAT, are very well positioned in China.” This year TOP FEATURE everything has focused on intelligent production and logistics processes – thereby linking directly to the strategy of the Chinese government and strengthening the position of our industrial exhibitions as Asia’s leading business, networking and knowledge platforms once again. “The Chinese automation market is changing”, says Claus Henkel, General Manager of Integrated Systems and Automation with the intralogistics provider SSI Schäfer. “Our customers recognise that they have to upgrade their logistics and supply chain systems in order to remain competitive.” The current trends surrounding e-commerce ad production have accelerated this development again. CeMAT ASIA has changed completely in the last three years – from a trade fair for shelving systems to an automation exhibition. “With our branch in Taicang in China, we are in a position to deliver our systems more quickly and to offer our customers in China an optimal service level.” Philipp Schitter, Director Sales Asia & Pacific with KNAPP. Numerous new projects in e-commerce “The Asia-Pacific area is one of the strongest growth regions for Kardex Remstar”, explains Tobias Steffens from Kardex Deutschland, manufacturer of automated warehouse solutions and material flow systems. “We offer innovative technologies, a major presence in the Asia-Pacific region with proximity to customers and an expansive service network.” CeMAT ASIA provides the opportunity to meet both regular customers and potential new customers and present current intralogistics solutions. The Swiss specialist Interroll has also extended its production capacity in China and reinforced its commitment to China at CeMAT ASIA. Interroll had already put a new production building into operation in Suzhou in August 2015, as the regional competence centre had reached its maximum production capacity. The modular conveyor platform that Interroll unveiled officially at CeMAT Asia for the Asia-Pacific region is now also being produced there. In e-commerce in particular, the trend is moving strongly in the direction of warehouse automation with a multitude of new projects on the Asian market. “A key factor in the success of e-commerce providers is an efficient and optimised supply chain”, says Philipp Schitter, for example, Director Sales Asia & Pacific with the Austrian provider KNAPP. “We can provide support with specialised solutions in this area.” With goods-to-person workstations serviced by the OSR shuttle, the customer’s service level can be raised in terms both of the speed of delivery and the delivery quality. Fast conveyor technology solutions also contribute to improving the efficiency of manual warehouses with moderate sums of investment. “With the KNAPP branch in Taicang in China, we are also in a position to deliver our systems more quickly and to offer our customers in China an optimal service level”, says Schitter. German exports to China According to the VDMA, China is still the largest market for German intralogistics companies in Asia. Wilfried NeuhausGalladé Chair of the VDMA Conveyor Technology and Intralogistics Professional Association 1 What are the challenges facing the crane industry in view of the issues of Industry 4.0 and digitalisation? Personal Data Wilfried Neuhaus-Galladé is chair of the VDMA Conveyor Technology and Intralogistics Professional Association and Managing Director of J.D. Neuhaus GmbH, based in Witten. The company produces pneumatically and hydraulically operated hoists and crane systems. 6 LOGISTICS INSIDER · December 2015 Wilfried Neuhaus-Galladé: Of course, Industry 4.0 is an important topic in the crane industry and will gain in importance in the future. Our companies must still however overcome numerous challenges to implement it successfully. High investment costs are often at the heart of this, together with benefits that cannot be or have not been clearly defined. Security concerns in relation to IT are also playing an important part for many decision-makers at the moment, as is the absence of binding standards. The crane industry must and will face up to these challenges, of course. The main theme for CeMAT 2016 is therefore “Smart Supply Chain Solutions”. 2 What are the most important trends in the industry in your view? Customised solutions will play an even bigger role in the future than they have done to date. In relation both to the engineering and the complexity of the systems. Of course, the work involved in producing the documentation will increase, too. And the more complex the system, the more important the services provided by the manufacturer to ensure fault-free production processes with 24/7 operation. 3 Which of these trends is your company, J.D. Neuhaus, focusing on specifically at the moment? We are of course focusing on the topic of Industry 4.0. Since our core business is using compressed air as the drive medium, the challenge for us consists in developing electro-pneumatic control systems that make our products compatible with digitalisation. But under the usually harsh conditions in which our lifting equipment and crane systems are used, this issue tends to be less of a priority. I recall in this context, however, that we developed an application as long ago as the mid-90s in which several of our hoists communicated with one another. In other words, long before the term Industry 4.0 was coined. I’m sure that other crane and hoist manufacturers have similar examples that they could relate. This shows that conveyor technology has played a pioneering role in many areas for a long time. IN BRIEF Fronius becomes partner of the IFOY AWARDS Fronius International GmbH is to become a partner of the IFOY Awards. From the selection period 2016, the battery charging specialist will be supporting the international intralogistics award and helping with the IFOY battery charging technology test. The agreement covers a period of five years. “The IFOY Award and Fronius share the same values”, says Harald Scherleitner, Head of Division Perfect Charging at Fronius. “We are therefore delighted to be able to back and support this leading global award.” Ergonomic workplace design is also playing an ever more important role in crane building. Photos: J.D. Neuhaus, VETTER Krantechnik (2) The crane industry in the age of Industry 4.0 NETWORKING As is generally the case in modern warehouse and order picking environments, the trend in the crane industry is also moving increasingly in the direction of ergonomic workplace design and systems that run more smoothly by using materials like aluminium that move easily. “In the context of demographic change, we have to think in practical terms about how we can reduce the workload on employees in logistics and thus increase people’s capacity to work in a sustainable way”, says Marc Rieser, Managing Director of VETTER Krantechnik GmbH based in Siegen. “Individual solutions that meet the customer’s requirements and short delivery times will be in demand in future.” The issue of Industry 4.0 is also playing an ever more important role in his industry. “In crane construction in particular, this means that ‘preventive maintenance’ modules may be used to increase system availability and reduce downtimes.” He is expecting significant stimulus to come from CeMAT 2016 in this context, especially for medium-sized companies. The issue of Industry 4.0 now affects everyone. “It would be interesting for us to find out how machines and crane systems can be networked in practical terms – especially in relation to manually operated workplace cranes”, says Marc Rieser. “And as far as preventive service modules are concerned: what does the lifting equipment industry currently offer?” “As in many other areas, the trend in the crane industry is moving clearly in the direction of intelligent systems in the context of Industry 4.0”, explains Thomas Kraus, Support Center Director with Künzelsauer STAHL CraneSystems GmbH. “Linking the individual process steps to form a whole is increasingly involving crane systems, too.” Control of the crane systems by tablet or smart gadget, collection and evaluation of process data – all of this will shape the industry in the medium term. Technology Director Mihajlovic is leaving STILL Technology Director Goran Mihajlovic (45) left STILL GmbH on 30 November 2015 to focus on new professional challenges. This news was announced by the Hamburg intralogistics company in a press release. Until further notice, his role will be covered by the chairman of the company’s management board, KION CEO Gordon Riske. VW introduces 3D data glasses into series production In the Volkswagen factory in Wolfsburg, use of 3D data glasses in series production has now begun following a three-month pilot phase. As the car manufacturer announced in a recent press release, they will be used in plant logistics for order picking. This should improve process reliability in production still further. 7 What exhibitors and visitors expect from CeMAT Matthias Fischer President Toyota Material Handling Europe Information and registration for CeMAT 2016 on www.cemat.de “Technologies and business areas change quickly in the world of product handling and goods flow.
