History of SUMMER SCENE and Mission Statement
The SUMMER SCENE arts
& entertainment guide, which
began as the center spread
of “KITE,” the seminal Capital
District arts newspaper, now
includes listings of recreation
events and everything that
helps open the mind to new
experiences.
The brainchild of young
music aficionados and arts
lovers (dare we say “hippies”?)
in 1970, Kite began publishing
the first arts and entertainment
calendar of events, listing
rock concerts, classical music,
movies, painting shows,
tragedy and comedy.
Soon major newspapers like
The Gazette and Times Union
included arts listings, and the
excitement and interest in this
field have grown steadily since.
With a strong connection
to the Albany League of Arts
and supporting all arts groups,
after 1973 Kite was published
by Sam S. Clevenson and
his family, who also ran The
Jewish World newspaper
and a printing company.
World Printing assisted
student newspapers at high
schools and colleges, and
printed commercial work like
mall flyers, pennysavers,
college catalogues, AfricanAmerican newspapers, the
first issues of “Metroland,” and
Alan Charlock’s “Legislative
Gazette.”
In its day, Kite published
reviews by Mike Hochanadel,
who now writes for the
Gazette; started the theaterreviewing career of Bob
Goepfert, who reports for
WAMC; employed author and
Times Union reporter Paul
Grondahl; and published
photographs by nationallyknown rock photographer
Martin Benjamin, who now is a
professor at Union College.
Since 1982 when Kite
ceased publication, each
summer as many as 50,000100,000 copies of Kite’s ARTS
MAP, now called SUMMER
SCENE, have been distributed,
and the print publication is now
augmented as a news and
data source by the website
www.ExploreSomeplaceNew.
com. Distribution has been in
stores and countertops and
as an insert in newspapers
whose readers have desirable
demographics, like the Delmar
Spotlight, Altamont Enterprise,
The Jewish World, and Daily
Gazette.
Who reads and uses the
SUMMER SCENE? Capital
Region residents have above
average earning power and
above average interest in
arts, entertainment, outdoor
activities, and travel, with
easy access to vacationlands
in every direction: Saratoga
horseracing, Lake George,
the Adirondacks, the Finger
Lakes, the Hudson Valley, the
Berkshires.
The largest employers in
the Capital Region include the
state of New York, hospitals
and medical complexes, hightech industries and educational
consortiums like General
Electric Global Research and
Knolls Atomic Power Lab,
SUNY-Albany nanotechnology
center, Rensselaer Polytechnic
Institute, Global Foundries
chip manufacturing, Union
College....People who work
at these places are educated,
upscale professionals with
substantial disposable income
who are intelligent explorers of
the world around them.

The Great Escape and Splashwater
Kingdom, one of America’s favorite and most
historic theme parks, is open for the 2016
season. The season offers an exciting special
events calendar, nostalgic in-park offerings,
dynamic entertainment and all new experiences designed to transport guests through over
six decades of cherished family memories.
This year, The Great Escape debuts
Greezed Lightnin’. This seven-story tall
coaster loop seats 24 riders in “face-off” position and begins by rocking forward and backward, pendulum style. Once the train reaches
maximum height, guests experience one of
the longest suspended hang-times – over 70
feet in the air, upside down. Thrill seekers
are then hurled through a series of seven full
inversions, both forward and backward, offer-
ing sheer looping mayhem.
Now in its second season at The Great
Escape, Buccaneer Beach at the park’s
Splashwater Kingdom water park features
plenty of splashin’ fun for younger kids. The
water park features rides for thrillseekers too,
such as the towering Alpine Freefalls.
One of the park’s crown jewels is the
Comet wooden roller coaster. In 1994, The
Great Escape added its signature ride after
it was rescued from extinction following the
closing of Crystal Beach Amusement Park.
The Comet was shipped across New York
State - piece by piece - and reassembled at
The Great Escape. It has been rated as one
of the top ten wooden coasters in the world.
The Great Escape and Splashwater Kingdom originally opened its gates on June 27,
1954, as Storytown, USA under the tutelage
of founder Charles R. Wood. It has since
expanded from a five-acre nursery rhymethemed park to more than 135 rides, shows
and attractions, a full outdoor water park,
200-suite Adirondack
themed lodge and a
huge indoor water
park. The history of
Storytown combined
with the thrills of Six
Flags make the Six
Flags Great Escape Resort one unforgettable
family experience.

This summer, like so many before, SLAC has
put together another exciting summer music
program.
This season, we are opening with a
special memorial program to honor Dan
Riggins, a SLAC Board member and beloved
area resident. Dan loved Johnny Cash music
and had scouted out the Johnny Cash tribute
group for SLAC called, ‘The Spirit of Johnny
Cash’ with Harold Ford as the lead singer.
This concert will be held on Tuesday, July
19th at 8 PM at the Boat House Theater in
Schroon Lake, N.Y. As a special concert the
cost of admission to this concert is $25.00.
We have again attempted to offer a wide
variety of music genres and hope we attract
our loyal supporters as well as new attendees.
SLAC would like to acknowledge some of
our loyal community supporters: The Town of
Schroon Lake, The Schroon Lake Chamber
of Commerce, Stewarts Stores, The Glens
Falls National Bank, Annual Memberships and
Donations from loyal
friends as well as the
tireless efforts of our
many volunteers who
support our programs

Natural Stone
Bridge and Caves
535 Stone Bridge Rd
Pottersville, NY
(518) 494-2283
www.stonebridgeandcaves.com
Just 23 miles North of Lake George
Village. The massive stone bridge arch
- the largest marble cave entrance in the
east - dominates this spectacular display
of Adirondack geology. Originally named
Puente de Dios (Bridge of God) by explorers
and later described in Morse’s Geography of
1790, the stone bridge has captivated visitors
for over 200 years. The marble caves were
rapidly formed during the last ice age with an
exposed layer of ancient marble subjected
to the raging acidic melting glacier floodwaters. Explore a self-guided, above-ground,
natural stone step nature trail and experience
up-close the many unique rock features in
the marble gorge, such as potholes, grottos,
and the mill site waterfalls. Descend into
lighted surface caves with raging waterfalls or
tranquil dark pools. Try our Adventure Tour to
explore additional caves if willing to crawl, get
a bit dirty, and rinsed off with a float through
Garnet Cave. The property continues to be
managed by relatives who received the site
in the 1700’s for Revolutionary War service.
An extensive rock shop offers many fine
crystals, gems, fossils, bookends and geodes,
each one a treasure with an agate design or
crystals. Other activities include: gemstone
mining, gold rush mine, crystal quest mine,
caveman challenge bouldering wall, 18 hole
disc golf course, fish feeding, jewelry making, decorating walking sticks or uncovering
ancient bones in the dino dig. Food service
includes a snack bar at the caves facility and
more than 40 flavors of soft ice-cream at
our ice cream stand. The facilities feature
a scenic site for wedding ceremonies. Grills
and pavilions are available and cabins are
available for rent. Fourteen miles of snowshoe trails with
views of the stone
bridge, glacial erratic
boulders, mountain
peaks and waterfalls
are available from
mid Dec – March.
Seagle Music Colony

www.seaglecolony.org
Seagle Music Colony celebrates its 101st
Anniversary in 2016. The oldest and one of
the most distinguished summer vocal music
training programs in the country, SMC trains
32 young pre-professional vocalists each
summer. Chosen through a rigorous nationwide audition process from between 350-400
applicants, the 32 young artists are immersed
in intense training during the nine-week
summer program. As part of their training
the artists, along with professional stage
and musical faculty and staff from across
the country, produce six fully staged and
costumed productions of opera and musical theatre each season. A highlight of this
year’s productions will be the world premiere
of ROSCOE by composer Evan Mack and
librettist Joshua McGuire based on the novel
by Pulitzer Prize winning Albany author William Kennedy. An early-fall outreach program
keeps a small troupe of artists through the
month of September and brings in-school
performances of children’s opera directly to
elementary students throughout the region.
SMC Alumni have appeared on major operatic stages across the country and around the
world including the Metropolitan Opera, Santa
Fe Opera, San Francisco Opera, Chicago
Lyric Opera, Houston
Grand Opera and
more. Alumni also
grace many Broadway and National
Tour productions.
The Lake Theatre

www.laketheatreproductions.com
The Lake Theatre (formerly Lake George
Dinner Theatre) celebrates its 49th season
this summer and fall and for the first time
since 1982, will present two plays, ALMOST,
MAINE and SOUTHERN COMFORTS.
The Lake Theatre holds the distinction of
being the smallest, most intimate professional
dinner theatre in the entire United States and
has been regaling theatregoers for nearly
half a century. Said Producer, Terry Rabine,
“The atmosphere is more like a party than a
traditional theatre experience. Our guests are
treated to a full-course meal with tableside
service in an intimate space that seats only
125 people, unlike many dinner theatres that
seat up to 400 guests.”
“The entertainment fare is always a
comedy, something light and poignant, that
our guests have come to expect when they
attend. We make a point of keeping the
atmosphere casual and fun and many of our
patrons have been coming since the 1970s.
We’ve been hailed by The Saratogian as ‘…a
benchmark of excellence by which to judge
the quality of dinner theatres”, an observation
of which we’re very proud.”
ALMOST, MAINE by John Cariani, The
Lake Theatre’s first production, is a delightful,
sweet story of love among the sweet, simple
inhabitants of Almost, Maine, a small township
in the remote northern region of the U.S. On
a cold Friday night, the town’s quirky residents find themselves falling in and out of love
in unexpected and often hilarious ways in a
beautiful tale of nine interconnected scenes of
romance set under the magic of the Northern
Lights. ALMOST, MAINE runs from July 21
through September 3.
The Lake Theatre’s second production of
the season is SOUTHERN COMFORTS by
Kathleen Clark, a funny, touching “DecemberDecember” romantic comedy in which a taciturn widower falls for a free-spirited Southern
widow. Their funny, awkward romance is
filled with unpredictable surprises and when
they decide to “tie the knot”, the fireworks that
ensue are both hilarious and heart-warming.
In residence at the Holiday Inn Resort in
Lake George, The Lake Theatre offers casual
dining and professional theatrical entertainment at a great price. Matinee performances are scheduled for every Tuesday thru
Thursday with luncheon seating at 11:30AM
and curtain at 1PM. Dinner performances
are scheduled every Wednesday through
Saturday night with seating at 6:30PM and
curtain at 8. Guests may choose from four
delicious entrees (Medallions of Beef, Broiled
Atlantic Salmon, Grilled Chicken Breast or
Pasta Primavera). All meals are served with a
choice of House or Caesar salad, vegetable,
5
potato, rolls, dessert and coffee or hot tea.
Reservations are required and Show-Only
tickets are also available. Discounts are also
available for seniors, AAA members and military service veterans. For more information,
log onto LakeTheatreProductions.com.

We will have a ceremony honoring our heroes, including community workers, veterans,

The Eighth Step / 8th Step
at Proctors
Box Office (518) 346-6204
Ticket & Info (518) 434-1703
www.8thstep.org
For 48 consecutive seasons, The Eighth
Step has presented a steady stream of incredible acoustic/folk music: folk, blues, jazz,
bluegrass & Celtic, as a member supported,
volunteer arts collective.
“The Step” opened its doors along
Albany’s Washington Park in 1967 as a youth
coffeehouse, a haven for restless youth
during Vietnam and the Civil Rights era. It
grew into a major regional music presenter,
introducing the region to dozens of contemporary singer-songwriters from Greg Brown
to Dar Williams. In 2007 The Step became
a resident company at Proctors, Schenectady.
Our performer roster boasts Pete Seeger,
Richie Havens, Buffy Sainte-Marie, The
Wailin’ Jennys, Janis Ian, Tom Paxton, Cheryl
Wheeler, Tony Trischka, Odetta, Ani DiFranco, Bucky & John Pizzarelli, Dave Van Ronk,
Tom Rush and hundreds more.
Some say our name refers to the eight
steps to the original entrance. Others claim
it’s from a metaphysical theory of that time:
the eighth step bridges the gap from this life
to the enlightened hereafter—one foot in each
world.
Thousands of church coffeehouses came
and went during the outspoken 1960s. But
The Eighth Step still
thrives as America’s
longest, continuously
running non-profit
coffeehouse. We look
forward to our 50th
year in 2017!

Saratoga & North Creek
Railroad

www.sncrr.com
Saratoga & North Creek Railroad is a truly
unique way to experience the beauty of the
Adirondacks. Diesel engines can carry passengers through 57 miles of adventure along
the Hudson River. This scenic passenger railroad has been operating since 2011 with depots in Saratoga and North Creek and varying
stops along the way. Rail travel is embedded
into the surrounding communities’ history for
over a century with the first tracks being built
in 1871. Saratoga & North Creek Railroad
stays true to its heritage and operates refurbished vintage rail cars, including full length
dome cars equipped with kitchens. Those
kitchens are put to good use, as they source
food, wine and beer from local vendors to
give passengers a true taste of northern
New York. Meals are prepared fresh to order
aboard the train and delivered with service
reminiscent of the sophisticated and elegant
rails of the past. In fact, Saratoga and North
Creek, along with other members of the Premier Rails Collection, has revived the famous
Pullman brand that once set the standards for
service. The Pullman Table will begin service
on July 5th until October 28th. These sought
after tables require reservations and provide
an unforgettable experience that combines
impeccable Pullman service, sustainable agriculture, fine dining and those views! It makes
for an impressive date night. The Pullman
Table is not the only way to enjoy this railroad.
The Adirondacks cater to adventure seekers,
nature lovers, foodies and shoppers alike.
For road trippers, the train marks the halfway
point between New York City and Montreal.
The nearby Lake George boasts rafting, kayaking, fishing, hiking, music festivals and more.
With so many attractions within miles of the
railroad, the schedules are accommodating
to visitors. The summer and fall excursions
are ideal for people exploring the surrounding
towns, such as Thurman, Hadley and North
Creek, without the need for a car. Travelers can book a one way ticket to their next
destination or a round trip. For a peaceful day
excursion, the North End Local ride hits the
spot. Trains take passengers from Thurman,
near Lake George, to North Creek and back
again. A 40 minute or 3 hour layover is an
opportunity to try a new restaurant or take
in some history by visiting the depot where
President Theodore
Roosevelt once
stood. Get on board
with the gateway to
the Adirondacks this
summer and ride

Summer Home-Tree Fertilization
The Davey
Tree Expert Company
(518) 785-9417
www.davey.com
The trees, shrubs, turf grass and other
plants in your yard are all competing against
each other for a limited amount of nutrients
and moisture available them.
Trees in particular grow best in a wooded
environment, where they can thrive in the rich,
organic forest soil. Yet in our yards we regularly remove fallen leaves, organic matter and
other potential sources of nutrient recycling
that would help them grow naturally through
an abundance of organic food.
Top-notch tree health starts with a deeproot application of a slow-release fertilizer,
such as The Davey Tree Expert Company’s
patented Arbor Green PRO®. The benefits of
applying a deep-root fertilizer include:
• Improved resistance to disease, insect and
weather damage
• Expanded root systems for better anchorage, water absorption and overall vitality
• Luxurious foliage and enhanced blooming
Healthy trees are safer trees. Trees that
thrive well into maturity enhance the value
of a property. Flourishing, mature trees add
an average of 10 percent to the value of a
property, according to the U.S. Department of
Agriculture Forest Service.
Robust trees provide hundreds of dollars
in value to properties annually by filtering
storm water run-off, absorbing carbon dioxide,
producing oxygen, shading homes—reduc-
13
ing cooling costs as a result—and providing
myriad other benefits.
Get the most out
of your trees. Consult
a certified arborist to
determine the best
applications to maintain the health and
vitality of your trees.

Elite Repeat Boutique
515 McClellan Street
Schenectady, NY
(518) 381-4038
Borne from a suggestion of St. Clare’s
Hospital Auxiliary Board Member Lois Fay
from a visit to Florida, ELITE REPEAT BOUTIQUE was opened for business on October
20, 1987.The name was selected because it
is a statement of the quality of merchandise
presented in a fashionable setting.
A committee was formed and presented
this idea to St. Clare’s Hospital CEO Mr. Jerome Stewart for approval. Mr. Stewart liked
the idea and a short time later offered hospital
space next door at 522 McClellan Street.
An appeal to Auxiliary members was
quickly answered, requesting donated items
of ladies, men’s and children’s clothing,
jewelry, knick-knacks and housewares. The
response for volunteer workers was generous
and the Grand Opening for the shop was a
huge success on October 20, 1987.
Original hours of Tuesday - Thursday
11AM-5PM were later changed to TuesdaySaturday 10AM-3PM, closing on Saturday in
July & August. Men’s clothing was discontinued.
For more hospital parking needs, the
shop was moved to 512 McClellan St. Again,
for more parking space, t. Clare’s purchased
a building across the street at 515 McClellan
St., where the shop presently resides.
All items displayed and for sale are
donated and must be in prime or workable
condition and sold at modest pricing.
All are welcome.

Our History: In the late evening after a
Zyniecki family reunion, Ed and Lee’s children
were relaxing around a campfire thinking of
what to name the tobacco store their parents
had just opened. Many names had been
tossed around, but nothing seemed to fit. All
of a sudden, brother John had it. “Edleez!”
he exclaimed. “Get it? Ed and Lee Z.” Their
father Ed from inside the house returned with
“Good, now go to bed!” The rest is history.
On August 18, 1981, Edleez Tobacco
opened its doors. In the beginning, Lee was
the Queen of the castle. She opened the store
every morning and ran the show until she was
relieved by her children in the afternoon so
she could go home and cook dinner for the
family. Ed came in every day during lunch
and after work to help out his wife, also to
enjoy a cigar himself. All the children worked
in the store, each having assigned jobs they
performed them to a “T”. That was what Lee
expected.
Today: Over 35 years later, after several
renovations and additions, we have over
2,000 square feet of space, including a smoking lounge and the largest walk-in humidor
17
in the capital region.
Today the store is
owned by Ed and
Lee’s children Pam
and John, honoring
their parents every
day by continuing
their legacy.

Join the Hudson-Athens Lighthouse Preservation Society (HALPS) as it hosts visits
to the eight room lighthouse, a quiet sentinel
that has guided navigation on the Hudson
River for 141 years. Tours of the Historic
Hudson-Athens Lighthouse are now available
on the second Saturday of each month – July
through October. HALPS, as the owner of
the house, is responsible for its year round
restoration, maintenance, and preservation.
As visitors arrive at the lighthouse, they
climb the metal stairs and enter the interior of
the lighthouse where they are welcomed by
tour guides or docents. Through video clips,
Emily Brunner will relate factual stories about
life on the lighthouse in the 1930s. Emily is
the daughter of Emil Brunner, the last civilian
lighthouse keeper, who served as keeper from
1930 to 1949. The Brunner family lived on the
lighthouse during much of the 1930s before
moving to Athens. Son Robert was born in
the lighthouse. Until recently, Emily was often
at tours and able to regale visitors with many
colorful tales of life on the lighthouse.
The tour gives you the opportunity to
learn about the important role the Hudson
River played in the development of the upper
Hudson River towns, and how the lighthouse
made navigation safe along the river to allow
development to take place.
For more about the history and preservation of the lighthouse, please visit the web site

Featuring colorful paintings of the American
circus by artists from the 1920s and 1930s
alongside circus-themed marketing materials
used by the Beech-Nut Packaging Company
in the 1930s.
The Circus coming to town was a highly
anticipated event in small towns across
America during the early decades of the 20th
century. Leading American artists painted the
spectacle of the parade as the circus arrived
and the excitement under the big top. Images
of circus cars, animals and acrobats were
also used to market food products during the
1930s. The Beech-Nut Packaging Company
was one of the companies to use the
excitement and nostalgia of the circus to sell
its products. This culminated in the creation
of Beech-Nut miniature circuses that traveled
across the country by bus, and a circus
themed pavilion at the New York World’s Fair
in 1939. Exhibition sponsored by the BeechNut Nutrition Company.

The Mahaiwe
14 Castle St
Great Barrington, MA
(413) 528-0100
www.mahaiwe.org
Today’s Mahaiwe Performing Arts Center
was formed as a non-profit organization in
2002, but its story begins long before that.
In 1904, a coalition of businessmen, led by
John H.C. Church, in rising Great Barrington,
MA, orchestrated construction of the Mahaiwe
Theater and encompassing Mahaiwe Block.
“Mahaiwe” (pronounced Muh-HAY-We)
means “the place downstream” from the
Housatonic River and is derived from the
Berkshires’ original Mahican settlers. Designed by architect Joseph McArthur Vance,
the structure replaced an earlier corner building on Castle and Main streets that burned
down in 1901.
While the building — a three-story, French
Renaissance Revival brick and marble giant
— contributed to Great Barrington’s then-developing and now-celebrated look, the theater
evoked an arts culture that defines an entire
region. In 1905, the theater officially opened
with live performances. At capacity, 1,000
patrons could attend the earliest Mahaiwe
shows, among them John Philip Sousa and
vaudeville acts. Silent films came around in
1914, followed by “talkies” in 1929. By the
early ‘30s, the theater saw its first renovation,
downsizing to 750 seats, and shifted its main
focus to movies. Earl B. Raifstanger, Sr. managed the popular theater for several decades
and long-term manager Al Schwartz carried
operations through the latter part of the 20th
century.
The theater faced prospective demolition
and redevelopment when a cinema chain
acquired it in 1988. However, in 1995, the
beloved but aged Mahaiwe gained protection
under the formation of Great Barrington’s
Downtown Historic District and, in 2003, renovation under its present leadership began.
Through it all, the theater has continuously
run programs since its opening over 110
years ago.
Founder Lola Jaffe and a dedicated
board and staff raised and invested over $9
million for the restoration project, upgrading
infrastructure from floor to roof, including
reconstruction of the original 1930s marquee.
During this time, Lola — as she’s affectionately known — also secured the building’s
listing on the National Register of Historic
Places. Noted architect Hugh Hardy, Allegrone Construction and a team of talented
artisans oversaw the historic project with
great attention to detail. With comfortable
seating and changes for the projection booth
and accessibility ramp, the theater now seats
just under 700. Work was completed in time
for a Centennial Celebration in 2005, with the
launch of year-round arts programming.
Since then, the Mahaiwe Performing Arts
Center has steadily presented a thoughtful selection of music, dance, theatre, opera, talks,
and movie classics. The Mahaiwe is a staple
and a resource: its live performances inspire
tens of thousands of audience members
each year, its family and educational events
are vital to the region, its embrace of modern
technology supplements programming with
live High Definition satellite broadcasts from
around the world,
and its year-round
schedule enhances
the quality of life
for all those who
reside in and visit the
Berkshires.

Special Sunday Evening Performances for

There will be one additional performance

“Big River, The Adventures of Huckleberry
Finn” won seven Tony Awards including Best
Musical and Seven Drama Desk Awards. The
music and lyrics are by the beloved, funny
and wise Grammy winning country crossover
singer-songwriter, Roger Miller. Miller’s eleven
Grammy winners and six Gold Records
included such indelible hits as “King of the
Road, Dang Me, England Swings, and One
Dyin’ and a Buryin” astonished Broadway
audiences with infectious melodies, his clever,
amusing, heartfelt and touching lyrics and
his deep understanding of the complexity
and beauty of Mark Twain’s seminal novel.
William Hauptman’s book beautifully captures
Twain’s rollicking story that is simultaneously
subversive, hilarious and tender.
The City of Conversation
by Anthony Giardina
August 5th – August 21 2016
“The City of Conversation” premiered at
Lincoln Center two years ago and is a play
that is both timely and timeless. It opens in
1979 in Washington, D.C. when the Capital
City was a place where people actually
talked to each other; where adversaries
fought it out on the Senate floor and then
smoothed it out over drinks and hors
d’oeuvres. But it was all about to change.
In this play spanning 30 years and six
presidential administrations, Hester Ferris
throws Georgetown dinner parties that can
change the course of Washington’s politics.
But when her beloved son suddenly turns
up with an ambitious Reaganite girlfriend
and a shocking new conservative world view
Hester must choose between preserving her
family and defending the causes she’s spent
her whole life fighting for. Anthony Giardina
has written a play about politics in a family
and family in politics. A searing new drama,
“The City of Conversation” delves into the
ever-changing tapestry of U.S. Government
and the people who shape it off the senate
floor. The Washington Post wrote: “The City
of Conversation” achieves something that
eludes many other plays about Washington;
a savvy depiction of social skill as political art,
in a city that is defined by political science…
Giadina’s handiwork presents to the world one
of the most fair-minded, even compassionate
views of the partisan struggles of the city’s
political classes you’re likely to encounter
these day.”
The Consul, the Tramp & America’s
Sweetheart~ World Premiere!
by John Morogiello
September 2nd – September 18th 2016
“The Consul, the Tramp and America’s
Sweetheart” won first place in the 2015
Dayton Playhouse FutureFest and the 2015
Julie Harris Playwright Award Competition
from the Beverly Hills Theatre Guild. It was
developed at New Jersey Rep, Luna Stage,
and the Historic Elitch Gardens Theatre
in Denver. Oldcastle Theatre has twice
presented premieres of plays by Baltimore
playwright John Morogiello. “Engaging Shaw”
has been produced around the world and
“Playdate” which Oldcastle premiered in 2014
is now being produced by regional theatres
around the U.S.
The Consul, the Tramp & America’s
Sweetheart’s story, concerns Charles
Chaplin’s film masterpiece, The Great Dictator
and Germany’s attempts to prevent the movie
from being made. The cast includes silent
screen star, Mary Pickford, who became
head of the studio she formed with Chaplin
and Douglas Fairbanks, United Artists. The
play contains some classic comedic pieces
from Chaplin’s films and also concerns a
young woman trying to make her way up the
administrative ladder in Hollywood; as well as
the Nazi Consul to the United States.
“This new play is funny, clever, has an
interesting take on history, is play about
women fighting to receive equal status and
a test of commercial needs versus artistic
freedom.”~Eric Peterson, Producing Artistic
Director, Oldcastle Theatre Company
The Ride Down Mt. Morgan
by Arthur Miller
October 7th – October 23rd 2016
Arthur Miller’s 100th birthday is being
celebrated around the globe and Oldcastle
Theatre will do its part to remind playgoers
of the man’s genius with one of his last
plays, “The Ride Down Mt. Morgan.” The
New York Times wrote: “Any new play
by Arthur Miller is an important event in
American culture. One as theatrically bold and
intellectually subtle as “The Ride Down Mt.
Morgan” is a reason to shout for joy.” The play
concerns Lyman Felt a poet turned insurance
tycoon in his fifties. Driving down Mt. Morgan
in the snow he crashes his car and is taken
to an upstate hospital. Summoned to his
bedside are his daughter and his two wives:
Theo the older WASP-ish woman whom
he married decades earlier and Leah, the
young Jewish businesswoman who had been
Lyman’s lover and insisted on becoming his
35
wife. Now Lyman’s past, and his appetites,
have caught up with him. The play was first
presented in London and then became a
success, first at the New York Shakespeare
Festival’s Public Theatre and then on
Broadway starring Patrick Stewart. It is a
towering role in a play filled with juicy parts for
talented actors.
