And yet, there is one person who must be obstetrician, pediatrician, orthodontist, exondontist, endocrinologist, internist, orthopedist, surgeon, psychiatrist, psychologist, urologist, gynecologist, neurologist, neurosurgeon, psychoanalyst, metabolist, dietitian, cardiologist, radiologist, geriatrist and pathologist to take a dog through his span of life. That person is, of course, your veterinarian. – Unknown Author T here is no other profession quite like Veterinary Medicine. It requires for a veterinarian to wield against first diagnosis attempts. For example, a vast breadth and depth of knowledge, a knack for handling Golden Retrievers are prone to lymphoma. If a Golden Retriever is brought into people in a professional yet gentle manner, the ability to perform the vet clinic with symptoms of lethargy, difficulty breathing and perhaps medical analysis on a patient that cannot speak, the ability to weight loss, the veterinarian begins their process of elimination on the cause manage a business and an implied social responsibility to help relieve animal of the malady by doing a physical examination, blood work and X-rays but suffering, conserve animal resources and promote public health. This first most atypical aspect of Veterinary Medicine is that it’s the only profession where attempt at diagnosis is based on standard work up procedures and their you will find a doctor who treats a patient, sometimes for the duration of their knowledge of the breed’s predisposition. lifespan, who must also perform euthanasia on that very patient. Let us say that a veterinarian chooses to practice medicine on small companion animals. A whole new plethora of challenges await. First, the veterinarian must be familiar with not only the different species identify oncoming disease or may help a life-threatening situation through speed of diagnosis in the future. In addition to understanding the species for which they are performing medicine, the veterinarian must also know how to use an array of medical devices and machines. “Most pet owners do not realize that many veterinary of dogs, cats (and perhaps birds, hamsters, etc.), but they must also learn clinics are actually self-contained hospitals,” notes Mark Silberman, D.V. Source: AVMA Web site Practicing good medicine by not “guessing” at a diagnosis but rather performing the needed tests to determine the issue is key to the conscientious veterinarian; however, their good intentions must be balanced with the pet owner’s budget for treating their pet. This is where good communication between the veterinarian and the client is key to a successful relationship. One way to defer cost is through pet insurance. A number of companies offer a pet health plan with varying coverage. As with any insurance decision, be sure to compare “apples to apples” on coverage before choosing a provider. Practicing medicine is not always the only reason a veterinarian chose their profession. In many cases, their career choice was also influenced by their respect, curiosity, empathy and love for animals. Expounding upon that premise, veterinarians are viewed by many as having a “duty” to take in homeless, stray animals and treat them at no cost. While most veterinarians provide a certain level of indigent care and help finding homes for animals in need, as with any business there must be a limit so their fully equipped, professionally staffed business can continue to thrive. chemistry, blood count, electrolyte, EKG, anesthetic, blood pressure, glaucoma, laser and cryotherapy machines. Cost is a predominant “thorn in the side” of veterinarians and their clients. 14 www.houstonpettalk.com As pet owners, it’s important to realize the training and value our veterinarian provides for the care of our pet. They are as skilled as human doctors, have the same rising costs as human medicine and they are treating a wide variety of species - all of who cannot communicate their needs. In addition to appreciating their value, pet owners must go a step further and realize every veterinarian is not necessarily the right fit for your needs. Many people choose the veterinarian that is most convenient to their home but if your needs are not being met, don’t be afraid to do some research, seek referrals or potentially recognize that you may need more than one veterinarian. Breeder of champion German Shepherds, Janet Smith realized she had a multiplicity of needs that just one veterinarian could not fill. “I use one vet for basic care but I also use a vet that specializes in chiropractic medicine and another vet that practices homeopathic remedies,” she notes. The best way to have a successful relationship with your veterinarian is to recognize that, like all relationships, there will be times of frustration. Recognize what is most important to you. Evaluate what you are getting versus what you are not getting. If bedside manner is the most important, you may travel further to a veterinarian that makes you feel comfortable or you may choose a veterinarian based on whether their clinic has the latest tools. Either way, be proactive and communicate your needs to your vet. Respect their value but recognize that you must take charge of your pet’s care and veterinary medicine is a large part of that care. Veterinarians are like many things in life; they are individuals with varied skills, interests and beliefs….find the one (or more) that is right for you and your pet and it will make the times of strife, emergency or illness easier to handle.
