MILANO | SEPTEMBER 2015 THE EXCELLENCE OF DESIGN ACCORDING TO ISTITUTO MARANGONI THE SCHOOL OF DESIGN. Istituto Marangoni started in the fashion world and has arrived today with the School of Design, just few steps from the School of Fashion. The prestigious School of Design of Istituto Marangoni is in partnership with an industry legend, designer and talent spotter extraordinaire, Arch. Giulio Cappellini, and provides the best educational offer in the fields of Interior, Industrial and Visual Design. Cappellini has always been an attentive observer of the development of design trends and has been comparing since several years its own Company philosophy with young students and designers with a different and varying cultural background. Therefore, with great pleasure, Giulio Cappellini together with the Company’s Creative Team have decided to participate in the development of Istituto Marangoni School of Design, a special project which connects Milano’s industrial culture and the formative activities of the city. The School of Design is built in the heart of the city, in via Cerva in Milano, with 5 modern floors, technological and distinctly Italian, exclusively dedicated to design. The courses are well structured through a multi-faceted approach that includes theory and practice: from the marketing to the prototyping of objects that are created in the studio workshop. Through seminars on fashion and design, the School of Design completes and redesigns what is currently already available in Milano, with an exceptional 1:10 teacher student ratio in design courses (1 main teacher and 1 teaching associate, always present in a class with a maximum of 20 students). It is a completely new space, in an area where the most important international and national design companies are located, bordering the fashion quarter and Via Montenapoleone, supplied with all the necessary sources to interpret and guide the trends: a materials archive for design, dense and updated thanks to the strong collaboration with companies in the sector; a light modeling workshop to assist the development of projects and 3D consideration of shapes and construction techniques and functional details functionality; an ample and up-to-date library dedicated to design and fashion, to art and aesthetics, with texts, journals and specific online resources; computer rooms with the latest Apple Mac computers equipped with updated hardware and software that is specific for design; ample open-spaces for work and entertainment. 2015 Inspired anticipates the future, suggests atmospheres, interprets fashion and design seasonal trends, with the eyes of the cosmopolite students from Istituto Marangoni. It does it by means of Interior, Product and Accessories Design projects, conducted by the participants of the Three-year and Master’s courses. Guided by enthusiastic and competent tutors, in collaboration with excellent companies that are the best representatives of the Made in Italy, participants live the exciting experience of working on a real project for a client that gives them objectives to pursue and limits to respect. Each proposal is the result of an accurate historic, stylistic and marketing research that leads to the production of moodboards full of suggestions and aimed at orienting and contextualising the students’ visions. The participants, who daily practice both technical and manual drawing techniques, refine their expressivity by creating projects that can combine functional solutions with aesthetics, originality and avant-garde. Inspired reveals itself, to all intents and purposes, as an actual high-level publication, which can supply original sources of inspiration in the fields of Interior, Product, Accessories and Jewellery Design. Raiz (roots in Spanish) is the symbol of tradition and has become the main source of inspiration for the creation of a space. Fancy food market during the day and chic lounge bar at night, Raiz is a fusion of Mexican culture and modern architecture and design. During working days Raiz becomes the best place for Londoners and expats where they can have a quick lunch break. At night it transforms into a cozy meeting point for young arty people with lounge music and an intimate atmosphere. During the weekend, the Mexican food market attracts families as well as young people who like gourmet Mexican food and a friendly environment. Fernanda Salamanca Interior Design Intensive • One year course MODERN CORES INSPIRED BY DIOR The concept of the store project Modern Cores, was inspired by DIOR’s brand analysis (Maison Dior, Flowers; Cannage, Silhouette). The main inspiration was transparency, lightness, femininity and romanticism. The facade of the original maison Dior was reproduced inside the space, with the use of modern materials such as chrome and silk. The shape of the totems is the extruded octagonal geometry of the famous Dior’s cannage. Flowers as an essential aspect of Dior inspired the wall decoration for the VIP room, as well as the flower-shaped chandeliers. The chrome curved lines of the clothes racks recall part of the iconic Dior silhouette hanging over the wall. Elizaveta Kudryavtseva Liana Nussipbayeva Sofia Vera Interior Design Intensive • One year course INSPIRED BY DIOR The future is Gold The project consisted in designing a retail store for the famous fashion brand Dior. ‘The Future is Gold’, showcases a golden era inspired by the J’Adore campaign characterized by original Christian Dior designs and contemporary elements. The space is a combination of past and present aesthetics used to create a passage between the refined tradition of Versailles and the contemporary glare of a bustling city. ‘The Future Is Gold’ creates a world enriched by the past but totally future oriented. Sofia Vera Interior Design • Three year course SQUARE ONE INSPIRED BY MARNI This particular project was assigned to the third year Interior Design Students at Istituto Marangoni. It consisted in developing a Degree project that implied choosing a fashion brand to later translate it into the interiors of a restaurant. Square one was inspired on the quirky house of Marni. The creative process consisted in completing an analysis of the brand. Concerning Marni, the recurring images of children drawings called Sofia Vera’s attention. Subsequently, she decided to take the clients on a journey to the very beginning - to SQUARE ONE. The name ‘Square One’ represents a starting point, which is also the sense of childhood. Not only does it refer to the concept, but to the recurring theme of geometry and the actual cubic structure inside the restaurant as well. The result is a space that promotes comfort and sophistication through understated luxury and relaxed elegance. Elizaveta Kudryavtseva Interior Design • Three year course The distinguishing feature of the brand Bottega Veneta is the feminine silhouette, refinement and elegance. The brand is for women with the refined taste and elegant manners, for well educated top-drawer women. So in this project I decided to express the whole palette of the female emotions all the sensuality and beauty of tenderness and good manners, inherent in a woman of Bottega style. Time changes, people change as well as their tastes and preferences, only one thing remains unchanged, this thing is a female beauty, her femininity. So sensitive and delicate, fleeting and passionate, light, graceful she envelopes everything but remains unchanged. a break. INSPIRED BY BOTTEGA VENETA Annie Martina Fabbioni Luxury Accessories Design & Management • Master’s course Soulution Soulution is the capsule collection designed for the brand Moreschi. Design, architecture and natural shapes come together to create a harmony and a refined interpretation of the brand’s DNA. Clean lines and poetic language, simplicity that follows essentiality and creates a new pure code made of details and able to find the perfect balance. A simplification that leads to richness; a feeling that frees the greatness hidden in details. in collaboration with Ayse Merve Ucar Luxury Accessories Design & Management • Master’s course Escape Escape is the curricular project developed by Merve Ucar and is a shoes and accessories capsule collection for the SS16 season. It is inspired by the ‘On The Road’ theme. The project follows a path starting with postmodernism and ending with tradition; it aims to design a strong accessory wardrobe for today’s metropolitan-chic men and women. The Escape collection consists of six shoe models for men and five for women, both supported by functional bags and iPad cases. Details and shapes are designed according to the demands of the luxury target profiles keeping an eye on SS16 trends. Each piece was designed to be functional and comfortable at the same time. In this accessories capsule collection, a natural colour palette was strongly used. High quality leathers in nuances shading from brown to beige have been combined with laser cut details and tassels. Escape is a SS16 accessories collection for men and women developed for Moreschi, an Italian brand specialised in luxury items, which blend high quality and wise craftsmanship. in collaboration with Ruhi Tamer Cogal Luxury Accessories Design & Management • Master’s course Getting lost in the unlimited world of freedom... Borderless seas, unreachable horizons and a lonely fisherman. Moreschi SS 2016 collection is the representation of unlimited comfort, the chicness of minimalism and the uniqueness of craftsmanship. The main inspiration comes from the innovative ZEN structures, the blurred effects of the sea and the handcrafted sailing knots supported by modern details like clean stitches, gradient colours and 3D embossed effects. A relaxed and comfortable look is the main idea behind the collection. In order to reflect the world of fishermen, many different kinds of effects and materials were used together. Metal hardware is specially designed in contemporary shapes. The sea inspires the colour palette made of shades of green; black and grey are highly used and enhanced by gradient effects. It is the reflection of a SALT free soul, a SALT reality, a SALT masculinity and a SALT tradition re-interpreted with innovation. Moreschi is proud the present ‘SALT’. in collaboration with Mariana Camara Home Luxury Collection Design • Master’s course HOTEL SUITE Freshness IN COLLABORATION WITH MISSONI Inspired by Missoni’s fluid and colourful patterns and its passion for nature, the concept of the project is the connection between the nature of the Blue Coast, which is predominantly blue like the sea and the sky, and the suite of the Missoni hotel. The guest should be able to feel the presence of water in both a casual and elegant way, perfectly in line with the brand’s spirit. This is luxury simplicity. The design plays with lighting, shapes, patterns and shades of blue with a touch of gold that adds glamour. Melisa Garcés Mejía Home Luxury Collection Design • Master’s course HOTEL SUITE living motion IN COLLABORATION WITH MISSONI Living motion is a project based on the common characteristics between Missoni and the French Riviera. Nature as a major source of inspiration was the starting point for the recreation of a dynamic space based on the balance between geometric and fluid shapes, to create a concept of dynamic equilibrium. The architectural changes applied, had the aim to give greater scope to the spaces. The range of colours is soft, characterised by pastel shades in contrast with gold. Contemporary materials and finishing made of resin and polymers were used together with fabrics from the Collection Golden Age Jewel and Poppies by Missoni Home. The lights were inspired by the sun and the moonlight, and were combined with modern furniture and modular designs. Each suite has a variety of colours inspired by the sunset of the Blue Coast: one is decorated with warm tones and is called Venus while the other, with cold colours and is called Mars. Between the two suites a very dynamic dividing double faced door, recreates or gives an effect of motion, continuity and reflection. Pilar Magana Home Luxury Collection Design • Master’s course COAST COUTURE HOTEL SUITE IN COLLABORATION WITH MISSONI The Project was the design of interiors for two connected suites on the Blue Coast. The client required a suite where guests could feel both the atmosphere of the Blue Coast and the philosophy of Missoni Home. The project was named ‘Coast Couture’ and aims to join the two aspects: as threads design knitwear, textiles design space. The strong relation between Missoni and nature becomes the theme of the suite. The softness, fluidity and movement of textiles represent the sea in contrast with the stiffness of patterns and rocks typical of the coast. Zeynep Nural Fine Jewellery Design • Master’s course Return This collection begins with the concept of the actual turning and returning act in life; it is enriched by Damiani’s own brand expression made of simple luxury and refined elegance. By being inspired by gyroscopes and their natural and mechanical turns, the collection, which includes necklaces, rings, earrings, bracelets and cufflinks, is aimed to express some of the deepest feelings of the human race, such as commitment, passion and serenity. Precious gemstones are combined with ceramics and are enriched with white, yellow and pink gold; the result is characterised by non-traditional but still iconic, bright and fresh pieces. When creating the collection, Damiani’s worldwide fame and importance happened to be one of the first starting points. Its heritage, significance, positivism, uniqueness and innovative attitude are kind of merged and shaped into a new form of language. This language is expressed by the texture designed with the simple but powerful ‘D’ element and by the choice of modern lines. The journey of life, both human and the world’s are the key inspirations of ‘Return’. IN COLLABORATION WITH Gustavo Martini Italian Product Design • Master’s course Ritho The project was Inspired by the city of Rio de Janeiro, to be produced in Italy by Flaminia and sold worldwide. The idea was based on the contrast between the urban environment and the natural landscape. The sink is lifted up by a minimalistic pedestal that gives the idea of a special moment in which nature is celebrated. It highlights the special instant when men are in contact with pure water, it is the moment to refresh and purify oneself and to reawaken one’s mind. The name is a result of the blend of the word Litho, that comes from Ancient Greek and means ‘stone’ and the word Rito, related to the ritual of being in touch with water. in collaboration with Marina Tamie Camicado Yano Italian Product Design • Master’s course Mezzopieno The concept was inspired by Brazilians and their relationship with water. Even though, Brazil has one of the biggest water reserves in the world, nowadays the big metropolis of the country are suffering from shortage of drinkable water. This concern is even more serious, when considered on a worldwide scale, thinking about desert areas and their population all over the world. With that in mind, the project was based on the theory of the half empty or half full cup to illustrate that contrast. While developing the idea, the thought of incorporating the feeling of fullness into something that in the reality is half empty, has been the main inspiration and an actual representation of the current situation of water availability in the world. This inspired the design of the sink, which was conceived with a capacious outer shape and a very shallow internal with a small capability. in collaboration with Terence Coton Italian Product Design • Master’s course SOPRA TUTTO in collaboration with The washbasin is designed for homes, offices and hotels. It uses modularity to consider different users heights and to allow customization. It is a highly functional type of design, equipped with rings that allow the user to place objects at different heights. It is also a poetic item as morning and evening landscape pictures inspired its colours. The pictures are reduced to a line of pixels and extruded all over the washbasin, to recall the old rotating manufacturing process of ceramics. The icon, which is the deer, is the inhabitant of the forest and testimony of these ever changing landscapes, colours and emotions. An architect can therefore quickly design a thousand different bathrooms for a hotel, democratic bathrooms for offices, or even colourful and sculptural ones for homes. The top module is made of ceramic, and all the tops underneath are either in metal or polycarbonate, while rings are made of both metal and wood. Francesca Berti Surface & Textile Design • Master’s course The Longing The main objective for the brand Bisazza was to create an outdoor proposal. The word ‘longing’ refers to the feeling of nostalgia for far-away heavens and the need to recreate them as if they were an illusion. The concept is represented by shadows on the wall , which create enchanting views of places from our memory or imagination. The color palette is simple and contains all the range of neutrals; concerning the mosaic, the aim is to create the illusion of a landscape on the wall, therefore the drawing will be tone on tone, from shades of brown to sepias, beiges, cool grays and warm greys. The first inspiration came from the basic shapes of trees. It is a repeatable drawing composed by different shapes and can be personalized at any time. The idea of the landscape’s shadows of illusion can be reinterpreted in many ways. It can be the memory of a European city, with a western vegetation, the path of a park in London with its gate, lampposts and trees. As a variation of the basic drawing, the second inspiration comes from the Balinese landscape and culture. The fascination of an exotic place with verdant vegetation and the presence of arcane Zen statues. in collaboration with Miray Alper in collaboration with Surface & Textile Design • Master’s course Cosmopolitan Cosmopolitan lights are orchestrated to create endlessly changing patterns, images of meteor showers, clouds of fireflies and other natural phenomena. The lights are performing conceptual choreographies in space, by interacting with mosaics. Their intensity and speed changes; they shimmer, glow, rise and fall among skyscrapers. For the mosaic proposal, ever changing shapes, blocks and patterns, supported by a concentric composition of reflective forms with gold tones, were designed. The skyline is represented by the use of neon tones; the city darkness and the urban landscape are portrayed through black and white reminding the viewer of a city like Las Vegas. The main concept aims to create a natural image and it does it in every space through mosaics. The cities were transformed into a mosaic and designed with a multi-purpose use so that they can be combined with each other. The client can select the city he prefers (Paris, Milan, London, New York, Shanghai...): every mosaic panel has a functional use created by colours suggestions and can be used for outdoor and indoor spaces. All the panels use light to shape and create the space while giving the experience and perception of the natural view of a skyline. Chandni Pradhan in collaboration with Surface & Textile Design • Master’s course Plumage There is no doubt that birds are like a window, which mirrors our own human nature. By observing birds’ behaviors and learning the characteristics of their lives, we learn about ourselves and what being both fully human and fully alive means. No other creature can transcend earth, evoke beauty, inspire dreams, and ground us in nature, as even the smallest bird does. Join her in understanding the surprising lives of birds and what they reveal about being a human being.
