2014 Annual Report CELEBRATING 25 YEARS 2015CCF001_2014AnnualReport_32pg_FoldTo_5_5x8_5_j9.indd 1 5/18/15 2:55 PM FROM OUR BOARD CHAIRMAN AND EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Dear Friends: Last year marked an important milestone in The Cape Cod Foundation’s history – the celebration of our 25th anniversary. It is easy to get caught up in the pursuit of progress, but our anniversary offered a chance to reflect on the accomplishments of the past quarter century. We can be proud of the fact that together, with your help and support, we have invested more than $52 million into the community allowing us to: • support many remarkable nonprofit organizations • help further the education of thousands of local students • build a pool of flexible resources to support Cape Cod now and well into the future (now over $50 million) • work with a multitude of partners to promote opportunities to ensure our community will be even stronger tomorrow than it is today We all deserved to celebrate, and celebrate we did! It was a joy to honor the people and the organizations that have been essential parts of our history. You can read more about our celebration in the special insert included with this report. Thank you for helping to make our anniversary year one to remember! Kristin O’Malley Executive Director Eileen C. Miskell Board Chairman and President HIGHLIGHTS OF 2014 •25th anniversary celebration of The Cape Cod Foundation (See anniversary section on pages 2 - 5 for details!) •$1.65 million in grants was distributed to more than 275 different organizations • $3.5 million was contributed to the Foundation family of funds •$833,000 in scholarships was awarded to nearly 400 Cape and Islands students •15 New Funds in education, health care, arts and culture, human services, and community development were created to strengthen Cape Cod •Cape-wide Youth Action Plan public unveiling and implementation commences While 2014 was a year of celebration, it was also a year of planning for the future. We worked hard on identifying strategies that will lead us to our goal of quadrupling our impact over the next 25 years and we are in implementation mode. We analyzed our grantmaking and nonprofit support programs, and we have launched new initiatives that we anticipate will have significant benefits for local organizations. We continue our leadership role with the Cape-wide Youth Action Plan and are making exciting progress in this area in partnership with youth-serving agencies working on Cape Cod. And of course, managing an efficient organization and providing professional services to all of our donors and fundholders remain top priorities. So, in deference to John F. Kennedy, our past has “We celebrate the past to truly awakened our future and with that; we awaken the future.” re-affirm our commitment to ensure that future – John F. Kennedy generations will always have the resources they need to keep Cape Cod a special place to live. We are honored to partner with countless dedicated, passionate people and organizations and look forward to many more years of working together to enhance the quality of life on Cape Cod! In preparing for our anniversary year, our Board decided to use the entire 12 months to honor our past and chart the course for our future. Here is how we did it: • The unveiling of a new look for the Foundation-redesign of our logo, tagline, Facebook page, and website. • The public launch of the Cape-wide Youth Action Plan, which is the result of a collaborative effort of more than fifty community organizations and members, led by The Cape Cod Foundation, to create a roadmap to support our young people and to encourage partnerships and shared accountability. Implementation is in progress on priority initiatives! • Our annual scholarship celebration with more than 250 attendees at The Dennis Inn that recognized all of our scholarship recipients and the people who make these awards possible. • A 25th anniversary scholarship of $25,000 over five years was awarded to Matthew Cook, a graduating senior from Harwich High School who is attending Wheaton College in Norton, MA majoring in business and playing baseball. • A special celebration in September at the Sea View in Dennisport that brought together more than 130 Foundation friends and supporters. Highlights of the event included: a special presentation by John Conathan, former Foundation Board Chairman and Director, to James Rice and William Snow, two of the original six founders of The Cape Cod Foundation for their vision and leadership; the debut of the Foundation’s new video; and the unveiling of the Foundation’s goal for the next 25 years-to quadruple the endowment for Cape Cod to greatly enhance community impact. Matthew Cook, a graduating senior from Harwich High School is the recipient of the 25th anniversary scholarship of $25,000 over five years. Matthew is attending Wheaton College in Norton, MA. • Due to a generous unrestricted bequest that we received in 2013, we were able to grant five, $5,000 unrestricted grants to local nonprofit organizations in one of each of the following areas: Child and Youth Wellness, Environment, Arts and Culture, Health and Human Services, and Housing and Homelessness. The grantees are: - Big Brothers Big Sisters of Cape Cod & the Islands-Child and Youth Wellness - The Compact of Cape Cod Conservation Trusts-Environment - Cultural Center of Cape Cod-Arts and Culture - Independence House-Health and Human Services - CHAMP Homes-Housing and Homelessness We are honored to have served this community for 25 years. Thank you for helping us celebrate. We look forward to sharing the next milestone with you! 2 THE CAPE COD FOUNDATION | ANNUAL REPORT 4 2015CCF001_2014AnnualReport_32pg_FoldTo_5_5x8_5_j9.indd 6-7 THE THECAPE CAPECOD CODFOUNDATION FOUNDATION || ANNUAL ANNUALREPORT REPORT 5 3 5/18/15 2:55 PM TOWN FUNDS The Falmouth Fund (est. 2009) and The Chatham Fund (est. 2011) are area funds designed to meet the unique needs of their respective communities. Today, the Cape Cod Association is one of the oldest and largest independent scholarship funds in New England, awarding $450,000 to 292 students from Cape & Islands students in 2014. The Association is proud to recognize and assist deserving young men and women in furthering their education. At year end, the value of our endowment stood at just under $35 million, up from approximately $29 million at the end of 2013. This increase of 20% (while certainly unlikely to be sustained on an annual basis) puts us nicely ahead of the growth required to attain our goal of quadrupling the endowment by 2039. You will recall that, in 2013 we were able, partly as a result of our increased size, to add three new managers: GWK giving us a dedicated fixed income account; Oakmark for international developed markets; and an Environmental, Social, and Governance manager, Boston Common Asset Management. These commitments enhanced the diversification in the portfolio with the result that the committee did not feel the need for any additional changes in 2014. We do, of course, continually monitor our asset allocation and did make some nominal adjustments to various asset classes during the course of the year. As always, my thanks to the members of our committee, who give freely of their time and talent, as well as to the staff at the Foundation. Respectfully submitted, Jacob F.
