LONG PLAYS X X X ACERTAIN RATIO 'SEXTET"(FACTORY LP ) -- - I had almost written these guys of f after the disjointed failure of "T o Each . . . ', but 'Sextet" shapes u p rather nicely . It's a moody work tha t reflects the pain and hurt we at time s desire . Quiet but moving, ACR use th e rhythmic base of funk to explore ne w possibilities . The mix is a real ey e opener ; the busy bass and percussion are prominent but never overbearin g and help create a trance- like mood . Intimate and personal, the cal m resonance of the vocals extend th e subliminal hurt . A rewarding album that's well produced and Hannet' s name is nowhere to be found . (BOZ ) D .A .F "GOLD UND LIEBE' (VIRGINLP)- This has been described as a 'sensual " album and that's very accurate . True , synthisizers and cymbals don't generate warmth for some . It's th e vocals that really convey it . I can' t understand a word Gebi sings becaus e it's all in German . It's the feelin g in his voice that comes acr .)ss . Fo r all I know he could be saying "g o home Tanks' . (Craig Snyder ) TENPOLE TUDOR "LET THE FOUR WINDS BLOW' (STIFF LP)--- Pleasant bu t undistinguishable rocky Britis h pop . 'Three Bells in a Row' was a better effort but that was a single . They also dressed better back then . Buy the T-SHIRT . Th e Effigies and Da (change your name! ) fare the best while the rest (th e Subverts, Naked Raygun, Strike Under , and Silver Abuse) vary in qualit y but ultimetly have less going fo r them . The Effigies are a good dance able thrash band that even "nice " people like me can dance to . Da' s single from last year displaye d an effective Banshees influence d sound . The two songs here don' t quite reach that level althoug h 'Fish Shit" comes close . Although it's doubtful that this record wil l change anyone's life it's still a good bet for anyone interested i n regional American underground music . (BOZ) —' — r-k..,— L a1 f} ~J T -n B-1 bY U F.:\ C -1— ' T-~? SOCIAL CLIMBERS (HOBOKEN LP)--- I' m really at a loss to explain why I like this . Basically the music may be described as eccentric pop which some may consider 'arty" but to me sound s like good fun . The lineup is rathe r simple consisting of bass, guitar , farfisa, and rhythm box . Unusual hook s and odd melodies attract my interest . Some of it's goofy like the guy wit h the long legs on the back cover bu t then they throw you off and do some thing kind of sad . Sounds like a quirky Young Marble Giants if that' s possible . Recommended . (BOZ) L /Y./y60r11 ze w ick - t al , poin t of NICK IAWE "NICK THE KNIFE" (COLUMBI A LP)-- - Nick Lowe albums are like roc k trivia quizzes with his good nature d thievery and tongue in cheek attitud e winking at you and asking 'gues s where I stole this from . . . ' . Ther e Nick the Knife ' isn't a thing —o that you haven't heard somewhere els e but that's not the point, Nick's jus t tossing his pure pop elements aroun d again and how much fun he has fittin g back . together again .i the point . (And yeah, it does have a nice cover , (Cz T Boz . . . .) n g. . VARIOUS ARTISTS 'TEST PATTERNS " ( HI TEST LP)--- I really wanted t o like this compilation of St . Loui s bands compiled by John the Mailma n ' who edits Jet Lag fanzine . I mean St . Louis isn't all that differen t from Miami . . . or is it? There ar e 7 different bands but outside o f the beginning to the Mopeds' 'Wo e is Me" which sounds like 'Babylon' s Burning ' it's all downhill fro m there . You've heard it all before just like the two years too lat e ska sound of the Felons . Sorr y John I like your mag but you r bands just don't cut it, but wha t do I know so send $6 to Hi Test , P .O . Box 7941, St . Louis, Mo . (BO z 63106 . VARIOUS ARTISTS'CHANTONS NOEL . GHOSTS OF CHRISTMAS PAST' (LE S DISQUES DUCREPUSCULE LP)-- Thirteen bands/ artists— an Xmas LP although you'd never know it b y listening . Aztec Camera are the onl y ones with the right idea I suppose , they contribute a jazzy instrumenta l perfect for your next holiday brunch . Why am I listening to this? "Toky o Twilight " by the Names is hauntin g and makes me want to hear more . Cabaret Voltaire's "Invocation ' could be an outtake from "Red Mecca ' . Good stuff . I'll pass on the rest . . . Tuxedomoon, Durutti Column, Thic k hip background musi c Pigeon perhaps . A must if you collect LP' s from small foreign countries . But here it's all thump- thump thump- and- handclapping to th e point that you don't care if there' s some less than wretched songwritin g here ; that incessant BEAT obliterate s everything laid under(!) it . Doe s this mean `Stars On 45' will be th e most influential reeord of the 80's ? (Cz ) Get me a razor . . . BAD BRAINS (HOIR CASSETTE)-- What else can I add that I haven' t said elsewhere? NO this tape can never replace a live Bad Brain s performance but what else can ? Good reggae and some of the bes t thrash noise in the Universe mak e this an absolute must . (ROI R CASSETTE)--- If you bought "Roman Gods" and couldn't figure out wha t the fuss was about you'd be best t o trade that in and pick up 'Blas t Off! " instead . Contrary to wha t NY Rocker may lead you to believe there's nothing on their lates t LP that comes close to matching th e material on this tape . All thes e selections were originally produce d for Red Star in 1979 . What we hav e is a raw vital bar band that wa s capable of pushing 60's R&B an d psychedelieia to the MAX . The Tone s may not have an inch of originalit y in them but they steal from all the ' right sources . Trashy but brillan t dance music . What went wrong? (BOZ ) SINGLES x x x NON EROTIC MALE BONDING 'TORTURE' / 'THE MIDDLE YEARS' (GREEN 7 0 )-- NEMB are from D .C . and include tw o members from the Stick Figures . Coo l textural rhythm sounds similar t o the Stick Figures but different . 'Torture' aptly describes it's slow hypnotic funk beat ; compelling an d not at all painful . "The Middl e Years' is more upbeat ; a mechanica l rhythm section and a wonderfull y dissonant guitar create some very demanding but listenable music . An incredible record, I just wish i t was longer with 4 songs on it lik e the Stick Figures EP so that we could have become better acquainted . (BOZ ) GET SMART! 'WORDS MOVE" (SYNTAX 7 " EP)--- Clean sparce sounds with a sharp angular beat . Slightly neuroti c rock that vaguely reminds me of th e first Talking Heads LP although thats probably an inaccurate comparasion . A simple uncomplicate d approach . Write to : P .O . 'Town Called Malice' swing s like great Motown-ch,te hear the Supremes do this-without the somewha t busy arrangement of "Absolute Beginners" . Short, sweet, and straight to the heart / If those two represent their next LP , bring it on! However,'Precious"is art / funk/disco drone of the sort that is s o fashionable these days(and done bette r by others) .A nice change of pace and no t necessarily bad,but just faceless and no t showing any of the Jam's best qualities . And the 12"•has an extended version, n o less . Thrills . The 12' also features a live version of "Town Called Malice'tha t basically sounds like the studio trac k with screaming . Oh boy . Buy the 7' o r hope "Town' is on the LP . (CZ ) YELLO 'BOSTICH" (STIFF AMERICA 12 " I► SONG EP)--- I don't know why musi c like this has lyrics because the vocals are usually buried in productio n tricks, and no one's gonna listen t o them at discos anyway . And the music' s too passive and boring to be hear d (CZ) anywhere else,so who cares? 'TOP DOLLAR . PAID FOiZ QUALtIT 1i1SfD LP is4 1 TJLE HATES "NO TALK IN THE 80'S " (FACELESS 7' EP)--- Average wes t coast style punk via Texas . They're OK but how many other bands are there that sound exactly the same ? Actually you should read about them in Robin's report from Texas ; she' s more objective and descriptive than I am . It's just that I'm running out of new adjectives to describ e punk rock and I can't find my Thesaurus! Bleaee ignore my drive l and send $3 to the Hates . Thei r address can also be found in Robin' s report . (BOZ ) LI PER'SEXBOMB' 'BRAINWASH ' an this be a new trend and drawn pictur e sleeves in crayon . . . . hmmnn . Top honors go to S .O .A . and Minor Threat . Why Henry left S .O .A . to join Black Flag is a mystery to me . There's nothing on the new Flag LP that comes close t o the fuzzed out manical (not mechanical) intensity of S .O .A . Maybe Henr y wanted to be a star . The firs t Minor Threat BP is excellent D .C . hardcore but "In My Eyes" come s close to transcending that genre entirelly . They take everything to the extreme ; the accelerated tempos , the quick stop and go time changes , the crazed guitar work . . . a screaming mad wall of noise . It seems mor e than a coincidence that the lates t Dead Kennedys takes a simila r approach . Jello's been obviously influenced by the D .C . sound . The Teen Idles were an early version o f Minor Threat (well they had 2 o f the same guys) and are worthwhile ; a glimpse of greater things to com e perhaps . Government Issue and th e Youth Brigade are more straigh t forward, not quite as frantic, an d not quite as essential as the others . If these EP's are any indication , D .C . might possibly have the bes t hardcore scene in America today . If interested send $2 .50 apiece/p.p. for both Minor Threat singles and the Youth Brigade to Dischord Records , 3819 Beecher St . NW, Wash . D .C . 20007 . The others are currently out of stock but write anyway and mayb e they will repress the stuff . (BOZ) VIRNA LINDT 'YOUNG & HIP'/'THE DOSSIE R ON VIRNA LINDT"(COMPACT ')--- One of the most fun singles this year . Virna' s a blond Swede who sings songs writte n by a fellow named Taylor and they'r e with the Compact Organization, a ne w label-co . in England . Her voice i s mixed down and I still haven't decide d if she can sing yet . Something ol d and something new with a dash o f mystic, atmosphere, and 60's niteclu b feel- excitement . Like I said, fun bu t not for everyone . (Craig Snyder ) uncle s ce rni this was l mid set . . fingers a: play . For clear fo r two were pre- rec o Jive" . A g problem s proceed u Inn . Johnny th Screaming Sneakers SCREAMING SNEAKERS "MARCHING ORDERS " (SCREAMING SNEAKERS 12'EP)--- Re member when the Sneakers were considered Cichlids' clones? That was some time ago ; the band has since move d to NYC and their first EP has enough ammunition to silence even thei r staunchest critics . Well recorde d and produced, the Sneakers have a n energetic power pop sound tha t occasionaly reminds me of earl y Blondie circa 'Plastic Letters ' (thats a compliment!) . However that' s not an accurate description as som e of the material is a bit more Adventurous similar to the Babahees . " Violent Days" is my favorite, it feature s loud guitars and Lisa Nash (lea d vocalist) at her most convincing . Of special interest is their cove r of 'I Can't Help It', the old Reactions tune . Why didn't th e Reactions version sound like thi s on their own EP? Yes! I think I could fall in love with Lisa i f only she didn't have those tatoos . . . but I guess that's my hangup . Silly isn't it? Anyway I like this recor d very much . Thank you . (BOZ) before A l was uncle ] group.'s i was work ! The A-side isn't much different with its odd, vaguely India n sounding textures and rhythmns meshing into a hooky sing-song chorus . It works, really . On the flip,'Tissu e Tigers(the Arguers)" is straightforward XTC(is that a contradiction? ) pop that could have been an A-side a s well, and Colin Mouldingb time "Blam e The Weather"is amiable enough listening fare, but I can't remember what i t sounds like . (CZ ) PYLON 'M-TRAIN"/"CRAZY' (DB7 ' )-- From the cover (featuring a pris m sticker of a jumping fish . . .you know that kind that are usually plastere d on trucks) to Vanessa's wild voic e this is a neat single . Pylon seem s to be more accessible, without losin g any of their mystery . They still soun d spooky and dangerous . 'M-Train'feature s Vanessa providing the woo-oo of a trai n gone almost out of control . 'Crazy ' sounds like a lively dirge of a menta l patient about to give up and give i n to her illness . This is another quality record from DB recs, a label to be supported! (Mary ) THE DANCING CIGARETTES (GULCHER 7 " EP ) --- Their press release describes thi s as 'mental theatre dance music' . Wel l I'm not sure what that means but th e Cigarettes do bear some resemblence t o Pere Ubu back in their early days . Good forceful funked up tunes and a squealing sax on "Mr . Morse" mak e this worthwhile . The Cigs are fro m Indiana and can also be heard on 'Re d Snerts" an Indiana compilation o n (BOZ ) Gulcher . SUBVERTS "INDEPENDENT STUDY " (CLANDESTINE 7'EP)--- Rathe r routine hardcore from Chicago, th e Subverts can also be heard on th e "Busted at Oz" LP reviewed else where . Stronger production woul d help although "Radiation Nation' i s decent Damned influenced punk . (29 ) PECIAL A .K .A_'THE This is no t a regular single . It's a story song ; a story with a great beginning and a rotten ending ;a song with great music all the way through . the subject i s rape . Just the word chills the heart s of most women and here's a whole son g about one woman's experience . The mu • sic sets the scene, weavee in and ou t of the story line punctuating th e words and actions, and sadly trails of f at t end/ Rhoda has a fine voice . Sh e plays the parts of the woman and man , piping high for the first and growling low for the second . The specia l A .K .A .(what is left of the origina l specials)support the words with excellent musicianship . This is not a single for everyone . It's very disturbing because it reminds us tha t rape is a crime of brutal violence . This well crafted single is highl y (Mary ) recommended . A WI HE UL POT 'ADVENTURE§ IN PLASTI C POPE TV LAD' NO FIDELITY EP)-- - From th e San Francisco Bay area, the same plac e that gave us the Residents and the Dea d Kennedys, comes Pope Paul Pot,soundin g slot like the Residents with lyrics b y Jellow Biafra or something like that . The standout cut is "K-K-K Carolin a On My Mind"-'well the mud feels good o n my leather boots as I goosestep throug h the hills' . Fun lyrios, but watered-down Residents music ain't my cup of 4ep. (CLUB LEFT7 ' )--- Vic, now a niteclub singer with a new niteclu b band and their own niteclub somewhere in England . Wow . Well, Vic's finall y found his notch? In a lot of his re cent interviews he's been saying h e would rather sing for middle age d people . With his new style and lyric s he's a lot better off doing that . Nothing to go apeshit over but it' s certainly charming . (Craig Snyder ) START (L-ERT 7 ' EP)--- New wav e from Kansas . Jazzy upbeat tunes wit h a Holiday Inn piano player . I thin k they're trying to be mode though . I'll pass . (BOZ ) (30 ) THEA RE O F HATE ' YOU BELIEVE I N THE WEST WORLD PROPOG DA BURNING ROME 7` --- Almost every song that oes is a mini-epic, an anthe m of one sort or another . Last year' s 'Nero" sounded like it was made in Hell but 'Westworld' reminds me o f uhh . . . . cowboys . Theme music for a modern day western? Perhaps . Actuall y I can never seem to make out wha t Kirk is singing (not that it really matters) so I'll have to assume instead . Really terrific though, a faster tempo reminiscent of earl y Skids but delivered with that poisonous spite . Love their sax player almost unhuman emotions in his playing . I bet they're great live . (BOZ ) FOUR SKINS 'WHITE NEIGHBORHOOD " (BEATNOTE 2'EP)--- Not to be confused with the-English Oi band the 4 Skins are a NYC white (well 3 of th e k members are) funk band .
