METRO/ME Just how does one get through the most unpleasant moments that can occur in yoga class? Plus, some etiquette rules to remember A ccording to Devon Spencer-Smith, yoga instructor at the Rise Movement studio in Los Angeles (Kristen Stewart is a fan), the best way to deal with an Problem 1: embarrassing incident during yoga class is to laugh it off. “Yoga is a moving meditation that allows you to let go of a lot of things in life. Getting annoyed or agitated adds Problem 2: aggressiveness and ego to your practice, which defies its purpose,” she says. Other than having a sense of humor, here are some ways you can address mortifying mat moments. Problem 3: You’re embarrassed to make a sound You make an, erm, unexpected noise You settle next to a rude neighbor That “ohm” in the beginning can leave firsttimers in a fit of giggles. Solution: The purpose of the Sanskrit sound is to mentally bring everyone into and out of the class. “It’s what helps you stay focused and aware of your breath,” says David Kim, instructor at L.A.’s YogaWorks studio. “If doing the ‘ohm’ really embarrasses you, then do a very quiet one under your breath,” Kim suggests. Passing wind in public is bad enough. It’s even worse when it happens during a silent yoga class. Solution: “If a student passes gas, ignore it,” says Kim. “Some poses trigger the release of gas, especially twists and inversions that upset digestion.” And if it’s you you’re worried about, avoid eating two to three hours before a class, and relax: The anxiety over trying not to fart can make it happen. You arrive early to secure the best spot. Five minutes into class, the aggravator arrives, puts his mat an inch from yours, blocks your view and wedges his toes in your face. Solution: The teacher should lay down the law. “It’s only fair to have a 15minute rule, after which the people aren’t allowed in,” says Kim. Barring that, ask them to be careful — and wish them namaste afterward. NYC’s #1 FREE DAILY Would you know if it’s whooping cough? Last year several states saw huge outbreaks of pertussis, the bacterial disease that causes whooping cough. It can be nearly impossible to diagnose, especially in its early stages. Because it is particularly serious for babies, and 70 percent of infants who come down with it are exposed to it from a family member, make sure you — and any adult who cares for your baby — get the Tdap booster. If your child does become sick, Parents advisor Ari Brown, M.D., author of “Baby 411,” says to watch for these warning signs that may mean he has whooping cough. He has bad coughing fits: Whooping cough is characterized by short, frequent “whoop.” He might also turn very red while coughing, or even vomit. He’s not getting better: Your child’s doctor can prescribe antibiotics for whooping cough. WAVEBREAK MEDIA coughs that are so severe your child may have difficulty catching his breath at the end of a fit. He’ll try to get more air by sharply gasping, or he may Call your pediatrician if you’re concerned or if his cough lasts longer than a week. If it turns out to be whooping cough, your doctor will prescribe antibiotics to shorten the amount of time he’s contagious. To help ease coughing spells, make sure your child gets plenty of rest and fluids, and use a humidifier in his bedroom. Working out is about recovery and the plate loosens up your stabilizers so you don’t get sore. The idea isn’t to do thousands of reps — 25 is enough (12 minutes on the plate). But if this is a guy you’d really like to get to know better and would like to see again, it may be best to hold off on getting sexually involved — many times first-date sex for guys means something entirely different from what it means to women. The guys can have sex and consider it a “great date,” but that doesn’t necessarily mean that they want to get to know you better. In fact, for some guys the sexual encounter may be enough for them — and then they are ready to move on and meet someone new. Guys actually want to know what you’re thinking Ladies, you’ve been slacking. Unfortunately, the bedroom is still a place where the men tend to dominate in a heterosexual relationship, according to dating expert Amber Madison. “We tend to look at sex as this male thing,” she says. “It’s like, ‘If I’m pissed at him, I’m not having sex with him.’ It’s looked at as this reward for a man rather than a relationship thing.” Madison recently published her book “Are All Guys A—holes?,” in which she did field research — interviewing 1,000 guys in 10 cities. What she found was surprising. She asked men if they liked hearing feedback from women in the bed- “Women should take more responsibility for their sexual pleasure and figure out what feels good.” MADISON MONDAY-Thursday: Health and Wellbeing Monday your special message and we’ll print it in next Thursday’s dating section.
