A family property, worthless for generations, is suddenly zoned as part of a regional housing estate to accommodate an ever increasing urban sprawl. At this moment of shifting economies and loyalties, Hunter returns from a seven year absence. Finding his boyhood house boarded up and his mother in a retirement home, Hunter goes in search of answers. And he starts with his brother Gordon. Award winning poet and playwright Felix Nobis has created a play where an old Australia meets a new Australia; where a country cop comes to terms with catchment areas; where a fifth bedroom is more important than a backyard; and where new technologies have the potential to uncover old family secrets. Presented by Horsham Town Hall and Larrikin Ensemble Theatre MELBOURNE INTERNATIONAL COMEDY FESTIVAL ROADSHOW Presented by Horsham Town Hall and Melbourne International Comedy Festival Saturday 21 May, 8pm That travelling band of intrepid funny-makers is taking over Australia, one town at a time, with the Melbourne International Comedy Festival Roadshow! Rita is a hairdresser and a bit naive. She has however, a wonderful and indeed desperate thirst for knowledge and she chooses Frank of all people to introduce her to culture. Frank soon discovers that Rita has a lot more common sense than the so-called educated class within which he moves. He begins to fall in love with Rita for her zest for life, her almost childlike qualities and her simple, natural intelligence. But Rita’s life soon changes in this new environment. Two very different worlds then collide, merging to produce a charming human comedy and a wonderfully entertaining modern day Pygmalion. Presented by Wesley PAC and HIT PRODUCTIONS Saturday 2 July, 8pm Venue: Wesley PAC Tickets: $30 full / $25 concession / $20 student Duration: 135 mins with interval Recommended age 15+ horshamtownhall.com.au or (03) 5382 9555 HIPPO! HIPPO! A BIG NEW Musical Adventure! GENRE | CHILDRENS THEATRE HIPPO! HIPPO! A BIG NEW Musical Adventure! is based on the phenomenally successful children’s classic, “There’s a Hippopotamus on Our Roof Eating Cake”, written by Australian children’s author Hazel Edwards and illustrated by Deborah Niland. HIPPO is the imaginary friend of GIRL, a young child. GIRL believes that HIPPO lives on the roof and can seemingly do anything he wants, when he wants, how he wants, particularly the things that GIRL is unable or not allowed to do. Through HIPPO, GIRL is able to allay her fears and gain confidence in her early childhood years. Joyful and brimming with childhood wonder, HIPPO! HIPPO! A BIG NEW Musical Adventure! will make you laugh and maybe even make you cry, but most of all, it is guaranteed to lift your spirits in a BIG and UNBEATABLE way! Educating Rita was written by Shirley Valentine playwright Willy Russell and premiered in 1980. The stage play and popular film version have gone on to entertain audiences worldwide, and is considered a comedy classic. No kid is too big or too small for this unforgettable experience. Directed by AFI award winning director Denny Lawrence. Starring Francesca Bianchi and Helpmann award winner Colin Moody. Based on the books written by Hazel Edwards and illustrated by Deborah Niland. Spiritually, the figure of the swan is seen as a messenger of the gods and is associated with divinity itself. This production sees the company’s Artistic Director and Resident Choreographer, Simon Hoy, evoke the powerful symbolism and ethereal image of the swan within Greek mythology and Irish folklore. Drawing inspiration from classics such as W.B Yeats’ ‘Leda and the Swan’ and Swan Lake’s ‘Odette’ and ‘The Dying Swan’, Hoy has composed a marvellously powerful and uplifting program of contemporary ballet that is stimulated by the fundamental concept of evolution and rebirth. Saturday 6 August, 8pm As well as his skills as a composer, Mozart’s reputation in his day also rested on his exceptional abilities as a pianist. Many of his 27 piano concerti were written for his own concerts, and they are testament to his technique and sensitivity at the keyboard. Tickets: $35 full $30 concession / $25 student Few Australian musicians have achieved an international career like David Fung, whose performances of Mozart’s piano concerti have earned significant international praise. To make the journey, Simon teams up with Michael, a dull banker with a grey suit and a grey life, and Michael’s wife, Ginny, who is disillusioned and about to leave him. Also along for the ride is Claude, Michael’s boss, a blisteringly annoying blockhead with zero social skills. Filling these four larger-than-life characters are four comic actors whose experience ranges from The Lion King to Circus Oz, and who’ve displayed those talents around the country and the world. This will be an evening of pure Country Gold! not to be missed. “Brilliantly crafted moments of perfect comedy have left my ribs aching.” Ryk Goddard, ABC Radio 16 17 DROWNING IN VERONICA LAKE Horsham Town Hall and Purplestage present a Flaxworks theatre company production. ALWAYS… PATSY CLINE In 1940s Hollywood, Veronica Lake set the standard for selfdestructive celebrities. Smart, sexy, and typecast early in her career as the ice-cool femme fatale, she was thrust into the limelight at an early age. Naïve and unprepared, she left in her wake a polarised industry who either loved or loathed her. Thursday 22 September, 8pm She took tea with Eleanor Roosevelt, piloted her own plane from coast to coast, was famously sued by her own mother and bankrupted by the IRS before a rapid descent into scandal, alcoholism and a premature and lonely death. Now, 70 years later, trapped somewhere between Paramount and Purgatory, she wrestles with stardom, booze, men, and her spectacular decline into obscurity. Duration: 60 minutes, no interval Recommended age 15+ horshamtownhall.com.au or (03) 5382 9555 ALWAYS… Patsy Cline is much more than a tribute to the legendary country singer who died tragically at age 30 in a plane crash in 1963. The show is based on a true story about Cline’s friendship with a fan from Houston named Louise Seger, who befriended the star in a Texas honky-tonk in 1961, and continued a correspondence with Cline until her death. GENRE | THEATRE Venue: Horsham Town Hall Theatre Tickets: $25 full $20 concession / $15 student Directed by Simon Coleman, starring Alex Ellis and written by Phil Ormsby. BY TED SWINDLEY GENRE | MUSICAL THEATRE This musical play, complete with down home country humour, true emotion and even some audience participation, includes 27 of Patsy’s unforgettable hits such as Crazy, I Fall to Pieces, Sweet Dreams and Walkin’ after Midnight.
