Weekly Anointing and Prayer
After the 9:OOAM Mass each Sunday, we will celebrate
the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick, for anyone
who has the need to receive this sacrament. This is meant
to include such concerns as upcoming diagnostic tests,
limitations of aging, anxiety, depression, undue stress,
addiction, etc. for all ages.

Before You Said Amen….The Eucharistic Prayer
During the Eucharistic Prayer at Mass today, what were you
thinking about? What was on your mind from the moment
the presider (priest) invited everyone to “Lift up your
hearts!” until you sang the “Great Amen” before we prayed
the Our Father?
Eucharistic Prayer, the Church’s biblical and formal prayer
of grace before we share Holy Communion, the Body and
Blood of Christ.
The Church Prays with Attention….more of the
Eucharistic Prayer
What is it that is to take place after we say we’ll lift up our
hearts to the Lord? What happens during this time is the
Eucharistic Prayer. Most of us would answer: “The
consecration – when the presider says ‘This is my body’
and ‘This is my blood.’” And that is correct, but only part
of what happens. Why are we to lift up our hearts and to
give thanks and praise? Why involve all of us?
We Catholics say: This is the most holy time. But what
does “holy” mean here, and how do you spend that holy
time? It is the time that I lose you as a priest. I am doing
the prayer and you are doing a whole lot of listening. I
purposely do not look at you or have eye contact with you.
I am praying to God for you and my focus is on God. There
is no dialogue, communal praying or much music either. It
is often a time when the assembly drifts away with thoughts
sometimes lofty but often far less so with concerns like “did
I lock the door of the house when we left” or “did I get out
the roast to defrost for dinner tonight” or “I sure wish Mass
was over; I am really hungry for breakfast.” Most of us
readily admit that we tend to wander off a bit at this time.
Yes, we sing the “Holy Holy” pretty well, perhaps, with a
strong “Hosanna in the highest!” But sometimes we don’t
focus back in until it’s time for the Our Father. Where did
we go?
The name of this time in the Mass says it all. This is the
Eucharistic Prayer. “Eucharist” becomes a name for the
consecrated bread and wine only because it first means
something else. It is a Greek word that needs several
English words to translate it. It is a blessing. It is giving
thanks. It is praise.
So in the Eucharistic Prayer, these are the things that the
Church is to do – and more besides. The priest is within
the Church to pronounce this prayer, to lead this prayer.
The whole Church is there to enter into the prayer, to
acclaim all the blessings, thanks and praise that the priest
speaks.
We’re pretty good at getting on board for the song that
begins the liturgy, and sometimes very good at giving full
attention to at least one of the readings and hopefully the
homily. But if someone were to tap you on the shoulder
during the Our Father and say, All right, where were you
the last five minutes? How would you answer this
question?
What we know from the New Testament about our
Eucharistic Prayer is that Jesus would take bread or take
wine and give thanks to God. Now we do it in memory of
Jesus. What persons have you loved? When you remember
them, don’t you give thanks?
So the Eucharistic Prayer is filled with thanks for all God’s
saving deeds, but especially the passion and death and
resurrection of Jesus. In it we name our saints, our pope,
our bishop, and our dead. All the memories come together
when we surround the table and pray that these gifts of
bread and wine will become for us the real presence of
Christ, the Body and the Blood of Christ. If we then call
the bread and the wine “the Eucharist” it is because we have
prayed this Eucharist to God over them.
This is not to ask: What did the priest just do? (We know
that!) The crucial question is: After I said “yes” to the
invitation to lift up my heart, after we all said “yes” to that,
what happened to those hearts? Did they stay “lifted up”?
Come at it this way. What happens in your life, happens
with some regularity, that grabs and holds your whole
attention – and grabs and holds you? That’s what is asked
when you are told to lift up our hearts. We are asked not
simply to be quiet and attentive (that can happen at a good
movie or concert). For us as baptized people, we are asked
to lift up and give to God our whole selves, engaged with
all these other selves, around this altar. What’s it like to be
totally involved in some deed even for a few minutes?
Next time, can you enter into the Eucharistic prayer in this
way? Think about all those you know who have died.
People who have been holy role models of faith, members
of your family, loved ones. We Catholics believe that
during that Eucharistic Prayer the whole Communion of
Saints is gathered around the altar with us. Heaven literally
comes down on earth during this time of Mass. For me,
personally, it is so comforting to realize that my mom and
dad, my brother, Bill, and my grandparents and others are
around the altar with me at this time. Perhaps just realizing
that teaching will keep you focused in the future during the

bell will ring announcing St. Peter School will officially
open for the 153rd time. Summer is finished….at least
for the nearly 470 young people who will begin a new
school year with us. We will welcome some 70 new
students to our school this year and many new staff
members. While it is somewhat sad to see summer end
there is an energy and excitement as we are on the
threshold of a new school year, this new year of grace
that God gives us called 2016- 2017. Come, Holy Spirit,
Come! Enlighten us!

PRESENTS: SCRIPTURE STUDY
WALK FOR WATER JOIN FATHER JACK’S TEAM!!
Acts: The Spread of the Kingdom: This Catholic study program shows the Church, enlivened by the Holy Spirit, teaching,
preaching, healing, and restoring outcasts in the same way that
Jesus did on earth. The Acts of the Apostles provides an historic
framework for understanding the rest of the New Testament.
Paul’s letters come alive in a new way when they are read within
the context of the Acts narrative.
So many people in our world are in desperate need of clean water. More than 2,000 people die every day because of diarrhea
caused by inadequate drinking water, sanitation and hand hygiene.
Most of us in St. Peter do not have the expertise or the ability to
build water systems or the opportunity to travel to Africa and
Central America. But we do have the ability to walk and in doing
so to raise our community’s awareness of the need for clean water
throughout so much of the world and to raise valuable dollars for
the building of those clean water machines.
•Share with the early Christians the joys and struggles of living
the life of Christ, and learn how these apply to us today.
•Observe the way the Spirit-filled Church adapted to new cultures
when proclaiming the Gospel.

Kirkwood Park. We will start gathering at the Amphitheater at 8
a.m. and then walk about 2.8 miles beginning at 8:30 a.m.

The Little Bit Foundation is an organization that helps out
impoverished kids in the St. Louis area. They do a lot in helping
the kids in our schools in many ways.
Please help us in supporting The Little Bit Foundation by
donating new children’s underwear and socks. We are asking
for this because underwear and socks are not typically donated to
organizations, even though they are needed. Can you imagine
going to work or school knowing you aren’t wearing clean, or any
underwear? How uncomfortable would it be to always wear your
tennis shoes without socks? We are hoping by collecting these
items, it will lift a worry off the kids in our city.

in the gathering space of Church.

THEOLOGY ON TAP – BOTHER THE FATHERS
What is an ACTS Retreat?
An ACTS retreat is a three day and three night
Catholic lay retreat presented by a retreat “team”
of 30 parishioners who have attended an ACTS
retreat. The retreat begins on Thursday evening
and ends on Sunday. Retreats for men and
women are given separately.
Join young adults from across the archdiocese for our Theology on Tap August gathering - a night of Q&A, drink
specials, and great community. The
event will be held at 7 pm, August 9th at
Kirkwood Station Brewing Co. (105 E.
Jefferson Ave Kirkwood, MO 63122).
Our featured priests will be leading a
question and answer session: Fr. Gerber is currently serving at St.
Joseph’s Parish in Cottleville, Fr. Voltz is at St. Peter's in Kirkwood, and Fr. Sullivan formerly of St. Francis of Assisi will be
moving to Washington D.C. in the fall to further his studies in

The retreat is centered on Jesus which allows
each individual on the retreat an opportunity to renew and deepen
their relationship with Him.
The retreat talks and prayer opportunities focus on Adoration,
Community, Theology, and Service, from which the ACTS acronym is derived. Sacred Scripture and the teachings of the Catholic Church permeate the retreat experience. Based on this information, please ask yourself the following questions:

THE BRIDGES RETREAT: A RETREAT IN EVERYDAY LIFE
The Bridges Foundation offers the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius Loyola each year at various centers throughout the St. Louis
Metropolitan area. The retreat, which begins in September and
concludes in May, involves daily prayer and weekly meetings
with a Pray Companion. Regular group meetings include speakers, presentations, and opportunities for group sharing.
You can help by donating to St. Vincent dePaul using the special
offering envelopes sent to your home or the collection boxes located at the church exits.
Another way to help is to donate to our food panty we share with
Kirk Care. You can drop off non-perishable food items inside the
rectory entrance or at the Kirkwood UPS store.
