What will this year's conference hold? Well obviously it is the first conference for new Prime Minister Gordon Brown so there will be heightened interest in not only what he says but also the general demeanour of the conference going into a very important next session of Parliament. Brown has gained plaudits through shrewd management of issues through the summer, impressing people with a skilled handling of sensitive matters. Commentators have also come to expect a difference in Government presentation on a range of issues and the Prime Minister and the Labour Party are not disappointing when it comes to conference. Out go staged platform speeches by Ministers and in come short debates involving a broader range of people, with a Ministerial role reduced in all but a handful of cases to a five minute summing-up. On the fringe this year we can expect a rich cocktail of issues of paramount importance to the leadership - or so the promoters hope. Key themes as ever will be those around the environment and energy, but also expect to see a lot of attention devoted again to social justice and issues around Britishness, a longstanding Brownite favourite. The financial fringe will also be a major contributor to this colourful mix, as this guide shows, with a plethora of companies, associations and think tanks giving voice to issues including financial advice, pensions, insurance fraud, and climate change. The Prime Minister's big policy tent has room for everyone this year and, arguably, now is the time when policy input just might be helpful. Why? Mainly because that question - when will he call an Election - will be the talk of conference. It could just be announced at conference on 'Leader's day' brought forward this year to the Monday. Whether it is or not, we will be there to comment, contribute, help, and advise. The sea air will keep you hungry and the next few pages detail the places to eat in Bournemouth - whether it's coffee with a Minister, a swish restaurant for networking or just fish and chips when it all gets too much. Naturally the ultimate event will be the Lansons Public Affairs Champagne Reception. We've chosen the stunning Westbeach Restaurant, recently described by AA Gill as "relaxed, smart and serious with bad art and good blackboards". As it is situated right on the front, it means you can raise a glass of champagne to the financial services industry with your toes in the sand. Chef Hong Kong is an authentic Chinese restaurant, with a special 'Dim sum' menu. For those not accustomed to the Chinese language, Dim Sum translates as a number of small but diverse dishes usually with 3-4 specialities on each plate, covering all the exquisite flavours from the orient. Like the food, the staff are also superb. They generally care that you have a great evening and are on hand to explain any of your translation difficulties. It is also noticeable how many of the customers are Chinese, a welcoming reminder that the food is of a high standard and very good value for money. The Chef Hong Kong restaurant caters for both lunchtime and evening meals so is available to suit your personal timetable. With a great variety of food on offer and excellent staff, the authentic Chinese restaurant is created. Well worth your visit. Run by a Father and Son team, the friendly service combined with a high class of food exploded into an overnight success, which has been preserved to this day. Local cuisine at its best, Chez Fred's quality is unmatched by any other fish and chip restaurant in the UK, proven by the "Best fish and chip shop in the South West / Southern England" title awarded by the Sea Fish Authority. The owner and chef trained at one of London's finest restaurants, making his panache for food as outstanding as some of the UK's top restaurants. It is this blend of superior service, delicious and well prepared food that makes Chez Fred an interesting change from your usual fish and chip outlet. Perfect for a quick take away or sit in evening meal, Chez Fred boasts an adjoining restaurant which allows customers to consume their food in a pleasing surrounding whilst enjoying the best fish and chips around, and that's a fact! For an escape from the conference, this restaurant offers a whole new dining experience. With its reputation as a 'place to party' it is an ideal venue to relax and let your hair down! The menu is diverse and will complement vegetarian palates. Consisting of fajitas, nachos, burritos, and enchiladas, the food is typically Mexican and hugely fun. If you are after an eclectic mix of spicy food an energetic atmosphere and lively ambiance then visit Coriander and dine with a difference. CUCCINIS 218-220 Old Christchurch Rd - 01202 780882 4 Cuccinis is another Bournemouth gem. The interior, with exposed brick walls, large hearth and wrought iron dividers, create an enjoyable rustic atmosphere. It also has cosy bar area, where you can relax before heading to your table. They have an extensive Italian menu with their food complimenting the rustic atmosphere they've created. It is traditional and full of flavour and reasonably priced. Worthy of mention is their pan fried veal with lemon and butter sauce or their king prawns cooked white wine, garlic and butter delicious. Cuccinis is a great place to dine and if you go on a Wednesday you can benefit from some live music, not that we know its quality. Either way, it's well worth that extra trek from the town centre to experience this quality Italian eatery. W h e r e To E a t A n d D r i n k FARTHINGS RESTAURANT 14 Dalton Street - 0161 833 0000 5 'AA Class' A country house in a beautiful setting, with cliff top views and two AA rosettes, the Farthings restaurant has a lot to offer. Its menu consists of typically English food, from smoked duck served with fruity salad to chicken breast with avocado and mango. The deserts too are a must, with lemon tartlets and hot summer fruit crêpes, the menu is sure to please. Just to add to the quality, the chef uses fresh produce from the local market so no value is spared. Being very close to the beach and pier, Farthings is perfectly situated in the centre of Bournemouth, close to all local amenities. The surrounding ground boasts an acre of land, adding a serene and relaxing atmosphere to this traditionally English restaurant. The décor too is stylishly presented and in keeping with its surroundings, there are penny farthings hanging from the walls and timbered ceilings up above. For a more traditional touch, Farthings must be visited. It is cosy, stylish and very good value. Average cost per head £38.00 Reservations are necessary THE LANDMARC Exeter Road - 01202 589868 6 'Gothic charm and great entertainment' The Landmarc has to be seen to be believed. They have managed to successfully convert a church into an impressive bar. They have made the most of the gothic features of the Church whilst modernising it tastefully within these architectural constraints. It is rather a big space which is excellent as a music venue but a little too much when just in there for a couple of drinks. The interior is punky; lots of candelabras, big candles and fantastic lighting. It has a causal atmosphere; it's a place to unwind and have a good time…if you don't have problems with the staff. They were an unhelpful bunch and wouldn't really give us the time of day. This bar is perfect after a hard day's conferencing if you want to let your hair down so don't let the staff problems prevent you from going at least once. 13 THE LANGTRY’S MANOR HOTEL RESTAURANT East Cliff, Derby Road - 01202 553887 7 W h e r e To E a t A n d D r i n k A must for those who are passionate about Gourmet Dining, Langtry's fine dining is matched only by its decadent Edwardian décor, no other restaurant in Bournemouth can boast such a spectre of tradition. Perfectly located within a royal manor, Langtry's restaurant was named by its original owner and occupant King Edward VII after his mistress Lillie Langtry. On most days, Sunday to Friday dining is offered at candle light tables, from where you can watch your food being flambéed at your table. On Saturday's one can experience a unique Edwardian banquet consisting of 6 courses of meats, fresh fish, soups, prawns, fine English beef and Yorkshire puddings, finished off with sweets, coffees and mints. The exquisite restaurant and menu is matched by its beautiful decor. Overhead hang Chandeliers and the magnificent Minstrels Gallery. The dress code is black tie, but is in complete setting with the environment, anything less would feel too out of character with the surroundings. The stained glass windows complete the Edwardian charm. Prices start from £38.00 per head Fixed price dinner menu £26.73 (3 courses) Reservations are necessary Groups are welcome OCEAN PALACE 8 Priory Road - 01202 559127 8 'Transition from China to Bournemouth' Named as one of the best Chinese restaurants in Bournemouth, Ocean Palace does not disappoint. A mixture of Peking and Szechuan cuisine, all palates are catered for. All culinary creations have been imported from the outlying provinces of Chine, and the transition has certainly not spoilt them. Ranging from duck to oysters, the menu is both expansive and traditional. Situated near the Bournemouth International Centre and not far from the beach and pier, Ocean Palace is the perfect location for evening dining and close enough to other local amenities. The pricing of the menu means that not only do you receive high class food but also high class value, the quality speaks for itself. Famed for its 'Celebrity' presence, the Ocean Palace is a place to enjoy superb food and mingle in renowned company all in classy surroundings with happy, dedicated staff. 14 Prices start from £31.00 per head Fixed price lunch £6.50 (2 courses) Reservations required OSCARS RESTAURANT 9 (DE VERE ROYAL BATH HOTEL) Bath Road - 01202 555555 W h e r e To E a t A n d D r i n k "I have very simple tastes; I am always satisfied with the very best" And the best is what you get at Oscars. Contained within the estate of a grand Edwardian Hotel, Oscars Restaurant boasts a formal yet relaxed dining experience. The menu is based strongly on fish due to its beautiful seaside location, however due to its comprehensive choice, the menu is suitable to carnivores and vegetarians alike. The food ranges from sea scallops to Dorset spring lamb with herby mash and risotto as an accompaniment. The décor is particularly plush with wood-panelling and chandeliers hanging from above. The dress code is smart but in complete keeping with ones surroundings. For a dining experience with a bite of history, Oscar's restaurant ticks all the right boxes. Average cost per head £33.00 Fixed price lunch menu £13.50 (3 courses) Fixed price dinner menu £32.50 (3 courses) Reservations necessary SIXTY MILLION POST CARDS 19-21 Exeter Road - 01202 558399 10 'Hoxton by the Sea' Putting aside its slightly pretentious name, Sixty Million Post Cards has performed an incredible feat. It has injected the hip and trendy atmosphere of Hoxton Square in London into sleepy, seaside Bournemouth. The beaten leather sofas, exposed brickwork and impressive outdoor area provide the perfect balance to create that nonchalant, yet cooler than cool, atmosphere. This is the perfect place to escape Party Conference. The food and drinks again are exactly what you'd expect from such a bar. It's rustic, big flavoured food and on Sunday they have a roast that, they claim, will 'shame your mother's'. You can choose between roast pork belly with honeyed leeks or a beautifully rich aubergine lasagne, all at very reasonable prices. The drinks are good with pear cider and a good selection of some classic cocktails. The whole atmosphere and ethos of the bar is great. It's relaxing, yet classy. It's the sort of place that you wouldn't expect in Bournemouth and should be made the most of. Also it is just down the road from the conference centre, which an additional bonus. This is definitely worth a visit. 15 W h e r e To E a t A n d D r i n k WEST BEACH BAR & RESTAURANT Pier Approach - 01202 587785 11 'Without Sand' A large, bright room awaits, situated a short distance from the pier with outside seating when weather permits. A true Bournemouth speciality, the fruits of the sea are on offer in abundance and morning breakfast is served between nine and eleven. Although à la carte in the evenings, West Beach provide a 'menu du jour' which caters for the less exquisite tastes, offering cod and chips, burgers or baguettes. Open throughout the day for service from 9am, West Beach cannot be but perfect for any occasion during the day. Due to West Beaches location, the food is always caught fresh and as expected waiting times are sometimes longer, this however guarantees that each meal is cooked to an individual, high class standard, so is well worth the wait. Service too is good, and complements the cheery nature of the décor. Average cost of lunch £20.00 Average cost of dinner £30.00 Fixed price lunch menu £12.95 (2 courses) Fixed price dinner menu £21.95 (3 courses) 1812 AT THE ROYAL EXETER HOTEL Exeter Road - 01202 438 000 12 'Mix of old and new' The Royal Exeter Hotel's new bar describes itself as one of the more sophisticated bars in Bournemouth. However, once you enter the glass doors it turns out its not as sophisticated as you'd expect. The interior seemed quite drab and dark; it just doesn't live up to the pictures on their website. The lacklustre water features dotted around clearly show the shortcomings of whoever designed it. Nevertheless, a good night is still to be had. 1812 hosts some impressive jazz events, which fit perfectly with the surroundings. It is the perfect venue to enjoy live events in comfort whilst drinking one of an impressive array of cocktails. They have some old classics like margaritas and more adventurous cocktails like the Mosquito. 1812 has knack for successfully mixing the old and new which is reflected in their menu. The food includes interesting twists on classics side by side with some staunch favourites. Try the perfectly cooked steak or orange and saffron sea bass. There's something for everyone and the prices aren't too steep. But, if the food and drink are still not enough to get you through those glass doors then bypass 1812 and head straight to Bar So. It's cool, it's classy, and it's chic. 16 Coffee Shops W h e r e To E a t A n d D r i n k All experienced Conference delegates will know that much as the buzz of the secure zone is entertaining, it is necessary to escape once in a while to the real world.
