Kentuck Klassic Car Show &
Kentuck Day in Crandon
This is the weekend of Kentuck Day, Saturday,
July 27th. There will be a big variety of great food, live
music, and lots of vendors, plus stores having good sales.
It is a great day to be in Crandon and help celebrate the
Kentucky heritage of this town that had a lot of southern
accents around in the not too distant past.
And, it is also the weekend that the Kentuck
Klassic Car Show takes place on the grounds of the
Weber-Hill Funeral Home. Each year the show gets a little
bigger, and car buffs can enjoy a bigger variety of vintage
and custom cars and trucks. They can also enter the show
with their special vehicles.
Be in Crandon Saturday morning and enjoy the
festivities, where everybody can be a Kentuck for at least a
day.
Looking for something fun for the kids to do?

Northwoods? Make plans to attend the Townsend

and stop over for the best-tasting outdoor picnic treats of
the season; delicious grilled sweet corn, burgers, brats,

This is a family-friendly event that includes music,

development. Come fall, he will be a legal buck to harvest, but
with luck, he will live long enough to be a trophy with a big,

Birding, Rock Hounding, Trains &
More at Wabeno Public Library
Come explore the significant special collections
at the Wabeno Library this summer. Through September,
the library is featuring bird life books, train books, and
books related to the natural history of Wisconsin. “For a
small library, we have developed a impressive number of
books with a focus on nature and history here,” the director
Carol Lee Hughes commented.
“We have a beautiful copy of Audobon’s work,
that is now non-circulating but available for reading and
research in the library, as well as many books that are
available for checking out.” If you enjoy hiking and
walking, learn more about what you find with books about
rocks, fossils, and agates, especially books that feature
the geology and mineralogy of Wisconsin at the Wabeno
Library.
Are you a train buff? The library has several
excellent books on North American railroads and their
history, and is seeking fans of railroading to help the library
plan a small model train exhibit that could be featured in
the library during the Christmas season. Hughes points
out: “Though the library does not have much space, the
window sills and fireplace mantel are perfect for seasonal
displays, and this holiday season we would love to have
some model train displays in the library. Perhaps, we can
even start a model train club, that would be able to plan a
larger display for the community in a public space over the
holidays.”

The company plans to place more than 1,000 miles of
overhead distribution line underground in heavily forested
areas where electric reliability is a challenge.
Green Bay, WI - Wisconsin Public Service
Corporation (WPS), a subsidiary of Integrys Energy Group,
Inc. (NYSE: TEG), today received approval from the Public
Service Commission of Wisconsin for a 5-year, $220 million
System Modernization and Reliability Project (SMRP) to
convert more than 1,000 miles of overhead electric
distribution lines to underground. WPS will also install
distribution automation equipment on an additional 400
miles of line.
WPS successfully completed a small pilot
reliability improvement project in 2012 and used data
collected there in developing the larger project. SMRP
construction will begin in 2014. The company has already
identified the electric line segments it will work on in 2014
and 2015. That information is available at: the company's
website.
While WPS electric reliability is typically very
good, overhead lines in the heavily-forested rural areas in
northern Wisconsin are more susceptible to weatherrelated events. WPS has heard high levels of concern
about the number and duration of outages from customers
in these areas. Overhead line segments were selected for
the project where the conversion to underground can be
done at reasonable cost.
"In the affected areas, electric reliability is
significantly lower than state and national averages. The
areas we will target are those in which customers are
repeatedly faced with the loss of power due to storms sometimes for several days," said WPS Vice President of
Energy Delivery Vern Peterson. "When SMRP is complete,
these customers will see a level of reliability closer to levels
that customers in the rest of the company’s service
territory already experience."
WPS conducted an analysis of its larger electric
distribution lines throughout its service area in determining
the project scope. The company weighed the costs and
benefits of upgrading its lower performing lines and
determined a price point at which the upgrades make
financial sense and will result in the greatest reliability
improvement for customers.
The SMRP rate impact could amount to less than
$5 per month for a typical residential customer by the
project's end. WPS will contact the residents along the
construction route to inform them when the company
begins working in their area.
Author and WFRV-TV Critic at Large Warren Gerds
will make a personal appearance from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on
Saturday, August 10, at the Holt & Balcom Logging Camp
Museum off County Highway F in Lakewood. This free
event includes a presentation at 1:00 p.m. with readings
from Gerds’ historical novel, “The Legend of Taylor
Rapids,” and a display of real-life items related to its story.
The book, written in the form of a journal, features
vivid, comical and touching characters who take readers to
the era of logging, railroads and homesteading in Northern
Wisconsin. The setting is real, but the characters are
fictional as they depict life in the wild northwoods in 19141915.
Gerds’ previous books are collections of
biographical stories: “Tales of a Newspaperman: Ice Bowl
and Lombardi Through Time” and “My Father Lives in the
Drawer.” He recently released “Real, Honest Sailing,” a
339-page non-fiction book told through the experiences of
a present-day a Great Lakes captain.
Gerds writes a daily article for the WFRV website
that may be found at www.wearegreenbay.com, (Click on
Entertainment). He makes weekly live appearances on
Green Bay’s WFRV, Channel 5, at 6:45 p.m. each Thursday
and often creates a segment that is broadcast between 7
and 8 a.m. on Sundays.
Gerds was born in West Allis, grew up in
Milwaukee, and has lived in Green Bay since graduating
from UWM with a degree in journalism. He wrote for the
Green Bay Press-Gazette for 45 years and was critic at
large for 35 years covering theater, the arts, media,
architecture and creative people among other topics. He
was voted Best of the Bay as best Press-Gazette reporter in
both 2010 and 2012.

Continental waterfowl surveys show
healthy duck populations
MADISON – With high continental total duck and wetland numbers, state
waterfowl biologists expect a 60-day duck season similar to recent years but with the
possibility of bag limit changes for certain species.
This information comes after the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service released
continental duck numbers in the Trends in Duck Breeding Populations report on July 12.
“This continental survey information is an essential piece in determining
Wisconsin’s waterfowl season frameworks,” said Kent Van Horn, migratory game bird
ecologist for the Department of Natural Resources. “The information we are seeing is
promising for the upcoming season.”
The 2013 North American total duck population estimate was 45.6 million, which is
the second highest on record and 33 percent above the long-term average. The 2012
estimate was the highest estimate on record and 6 percent above 2013.
Wetland numbers across the survey area were up from last year and 35 percent
above the long-term average.
Mallard numbers were estimated at 10.4 million, similar to last year and 36 percent
above the long-term average. Most other species estimates were above or at the long-term
average.
“With high mallard numbers and good wetland conditions, we are confident there
will be a 60-day duck season,” said Van Horn. “However, hunters should be aware of
potential bag limit changes for canvasback and scaup.”
“While canvasback and scaup make up a relatively small percentage of the overall
Wisconsin harvest, these species are important to many duck hunters,” said Van Horn. “We
may see changes to their daily bag limits in 2013.”
Breeding canvasbacks were estimated at 787,000, similar to 2012 counts and 37
percent above the long-term average. This may allow for an increase to a two canvasback
daily bag.
Scaup estimates were at 4.2 million, which was 20 percent below 2012 and 17
percent below the long-term average. This is similar to most recent years. The scaup
harvest strategy is expected to call for a return to a two bird daily bag limit from last year’s
four bird bag.
The Canada geese that breed in northern Ontario, and known as the Mississippi
Valley Population, make up about 60 percent of Wisconsin’s regular season goose harvest.
These geese had a late start to the breeding season, but surveys indicated good
production and low nest predation. Breeding estimates for 2013 were at 319,693. This is up
16 percent from last year but 10 percent below the long-term average after several prior
years with lower recruitment.
Wisconsin DNR staff are currently in discussions at the Mississippi Flyway
Council meeting and will have more information in time for the early August public
waterfowl meetings and hearings. For more information on waterfowl hunting, search the
DNR website for "waterfowl."

Buying Insurance?
There are so many choices & decisions
• Where should I buy?
• What’s a good price?
• How much coverage do I need?
• What types of coverage?
• Will I have enough?
It can be overwhelming
TRICIA PEMMA
Some companies want you to believe that the only thing you
should consider is cost, but insurance is much more than just
premiums. Insurance is about loyalty and teamwork and
community relationships.
It’s about stability and
consistency, and finding the right coverage at the best price.

Don't be "Myth"-Led
What you don't know CAN hurt you...
Myth 1: If it tastes O.K., it's safe to eat.
Fact 1: Don't count on your sense of smell, taste and sight to tell if a food is safe.
Each year in the United States, 76 million people become ill from a foodborne illness and
5,000 people die. Would this many people eat something if they thought it tasted, looked
or smelled bad? As few as 10 bacteria could case some foodborne illnesses, such as E.
coli!
Myth 2: If you get sick from eating a food, it was from the last food you ate.
Fact 2: It can take ½ hour to 6 weeks to become sick from unsafe foods. You
usually feel OK immediately after eating and become sick later.
Myth 3: The worst that could happen to you with a foodborne illness is an upset
stomach.
Fact 3: You also can experience the following from a foodborne illness: vomiting,
fever, diarrhea, dehydration. Less common, but possible severe conditions include:
Meningitis, paralysis and death.
Myth 4: If I've never been sick from the food I prepare, I don't need to worry about
feeding it to others.
Fact 4: Some people have a greater risk for foodborne illnesses. A food you can
safely eat might make others sick. People with a higher risk for foodborne illness include:
Infants, pregnant women, young children and older adults and people with weakened
immune systems and individuals with certain chronic diseases.
Myth 5: People never used to get sick from their food.
Fact 5: Many incidents of foodborne illness went undetected in the past.
Symptoms of nausea, vomiting and diarrhea were often and still are blamed on the "flu".
Myth 6: If a hamburger is brown in the middle, it is cooked to a safe internal
temperature.
Fact 6: 1 out of 4 hamburgers turns brown before it has been cooked to a safe
internal temperature. Research shows some ground beef patties look done at internal
temperatures as low as 135°F. When measuring the temperature of a thin food, such as a
hamburger patty, pork chop, or chicken breast, an "instant-read" digital thermometer
should be used, if possible. If using an "instant-read" dial thermometer, the probe must be
inserted in the side of the food so the entire sensing area (usually 2-3 inches) is positioned
through the center of the food.
Myth 7: We should be scared of eating almost everything!
Fact 7: The American food supply continues to be among the safest in the world.
Remember: When in doubt...TOSS IT OUT!!!

Letters to the Editor
We welcome letter to the Editor; however the
letters should be legible, in good taste, not libelous, and
pertinent to current issues. Names will not be withheld
upon request, except for very special circumstances.
NAME AND PHONE NUMBER SHOULD BE INCLUDED FOR
VERIFICATION PURPOSES. We reserve the right to reject
any and all letters.
Dear Editor,
I am again writing to you about the July 3rd
meeting at city hall. Several veterans and I attended to see
about our lease for the Northwoods Veteran Center
Memorial being renewed. We have leased it for the last ten
years and took very good care of the building etc.
At the meeting, the Public Property Committee
voted to renew the lease for another five years for $70 a
year. The mayor spoke up and said he would veto it if it
passed. He said only in one year as he could find a buyer
for the building and he would sell it. Well---the buyer that
wants so badly for the Vets Museum to be put out was
sitting right in the room. So, that certainly is as clear as it
can get that the Vets Museum with all contents of wars etc.
will no longer be. The Mayor did veto it.
Many people from out of town and out of state
have viewed the museum and are very interested in all that
is displayed there and say its an honor to recall what the
wars' all about.
Mrs. Elmyra Hobbs had written a letter to the city
in 2002 when we had asked the city for a lease. She stated
that she believed the city should give the old library
building to the vets. She had invested a large amount of
money in getting the New Library for the City and said the
Vets should be able to have a place for their memories too.
This Vets Museum is good for the city and we
have done many good things for the city to be proud of.
Our vet's group (Northwoods) put the park up on Hwy 8
coming into Crandon, across from the Best Western Motel
and have been keeping it looking great for all visitors
coming in.
Also, our group (Northwoods Vets) bought and
put up the large flags on the courthouse square. The first
time we asked for donations for the flags and received lots
of help. Now we had to get all new flags again this year and
we worked to get them up for the City of Crandon to be a
beautiful place.
While speaking of the flags I want to let you know
that on Tuesday July 9th, I was at the Vet's Museum when
the Crandon Policeman came in and told me they found
eight of our new flags on the ground at the beach. I drove
over to the police garage and he loaded them in for me. I
took them back to the center and my son cleaned them up.
No one seems to know who did this, whoever you are--you should be ashamed, you don't have any respect for
the flag and our county and for our veterans. Four of the
flags are still missing.
In closing, I'm again asking for the people to let
the council members know that we would very much like to
have the lease for five years. Thanks to the Public Property
Committee for granting it at the meeting before the Mayor
Vetoed it. If the majority of votes for it will override the Veto.
Thank You and God Bless
A Gold Star Mother & Treasurer of the
Northwoods Veteran's Memorial Center

Wolf Hunters
Cont. from pg 1
The department has maintained the 10-to-1 license-to-quota ratio for the 2013
season. The season quota is set at 275, though the amount of wolves harvestable by state
trappers and hunters may be adjusted dependent on state response to tribal declarations.
One half of available permits will be issued randomly among all permit
applications and the second half will be issued through a cumulative preference point
drawing.
Successful applicants will be notified by letter, likely in mid to late August. Applicants who
are not successful in the drawing will be awarded a preference point toward future
drawings.
The 2013 wolf season starts Oct. 15 and will run in each of six zones until the zone
is closed by the DNR or the last day of February, whichever occurs first.
For more information and season regulations, visit dnr.wi.gov and search
keyword “wolf.”
Wabeno Library Cont. from pg. 1
Such displays welcome visitors and regulars alike, and encourage the public to
explore these topics by reading more. In keeping with the local history of steam vehicles,
the library also added an excellent work on the history of steam tractors, that has been
borrowed by members of the Antique Power Association locally, and is available for the
public.
How about model rockets? The library is seeking adults who would be interested
in mentoring kids in the winter to build model rockets that we can be launched in the spring.
An avid rocket enthusiast herself, the director points out: “Rocketry is for everybody,
young and old, girls and boys. We get the magazine of the National Association of
Rocketry, and it is available for checking out. We know the schools feature rocketry in one
year of the curriculum, so we certainly must have folks in the community who would like to
continue this sport and recreation. Following the guidelines of the National Rocketry
Association , we can plan a safe, fun activity that can last throughout the year but we need
at least one other adult supervisor.”
For more information, and to offer suggestions and volunteer time, contact the
Wabeno Public Library at 715-473-4131.

We will be flushing the fire hydrants August 5th & 6th, 2013.
You may wish to draw water prior to our flushing dates and refrigerate it for
drinking purposes.
During the flushing period your tap water can become discolored. Should you
experience discoloration, please flush your water tap until the water runs clear.
Hydrant flushing improves water quality.
Should you be interested, we invite you to observe the change in the initial,
intermediate and final water quality from the hydrant during flushing. Hydrant
flushing can increase water pressure, remove discolored water from the system
and increase fire-fighting ability in various parts of our system. This exercise
flushes pockets of stagnated water out of the water supply system and improves
water quality not only in color, odor and taste but can also remove harmful
constituents before they are able to develop. Thank you in advance for your
patience during this time period. Should you have any concerns, we ask that you
feel free to contact our office at 473-2905.

Nicolet’s new, flexible evening
classes
Designed for busy people seeking a college degree
This fall Nicolet College is launching a series of
highly flexible evening courses that give busy individuals
the chance to earn college credits by attending class only
one night a week.
“These courses are designed specifically for
people who want to earn a college credential but are
unable to attend classes during the day,” said Rose
Prunty, dean of the University Transfer Liberal Arts
program at Nicolet.
“Many students work during the day or have
other obligations. These courses are perfect for these
individuals.”
Along with attending class one night per week,
the courses feature a flexible online component, giving
students the opportunity to complete the remaining
coursework at a time that fits best in their schedule, Prunty
explained.
Class sessions will be held over an interactive
television network on both the Nicolet Campus just south
of Rhinelander and at Nicolet’s Lakeland Center in
Minocqua.
One class session will start at 5:30 p.m. and
another at 7:15 p.m. or 7:35 p.m. Each class is three
credits.
“This will give students the opportunity to earn
six college credits by attending class one night per week
and 12 credits if they wanted to attend two nights per
week,” Prunty said.
The courses will include General Education
classes, which are required for many of Nicolet’s degrees,
diplomas and certificates, and classes in the college’s
University Transfer Liberal Arts program, where students
complete the first two years of a bachelor’s degree.
Courses include Written Communication,
Contemporary American Society, History, Environmental
Science, Psychology, Art Appreciation, English
Composition, Math with Business Application, and
Oral/Interpersonal Communication.
Fall Semester starts Monday, August 26.
For more information, visit nicoletcollege.edu or
call the college at (715) 365-4451, 1-800-544-3039, ext.

Continental waterfowl surveys show
healthy duck populations
MADISON – With high continental total duck and
wetland numbers, state waterfowl biologists expect a 60day duck season similar to recent years but with the
possibility of bag limit changes for certain species.
This information comes after the U.S. Fish and
Wildlife Service released continental duck numbers in the
Trends in Duck Breeding Populations report [PDF] [exit
DNR] on July 12.
“This continental survey information is an
essential piece in determining Wisconsin’s waterfowl
season frameworks,” said Kent Van Horn, migratory game
bird ecologist for the Department of Natural Resources.
“The information we are seeing is promising for the
upcoming season.”
The 2013 North American total duck population
estimate was 45.6 million, which is the second highest on
record and 33 percent above the long-term average. The
2012 estimate was the highest estimate on record and 6
percent above 2013.
Wetland numbers across the survey area were up
from last year and 35 percent above the long-term
average.
Mallard numbers were estimated at 10.4 million,
similar to last year and 36 percent above the long-term
average. Most other species estimates were above or at
the long-term average.
“With high mallard numbers and good wetland
conditions, we are confident there will be a 60-day duck
season,” said Van Horn. “However, hunters should be
aware of potential bag limit changes for canvasback and
scaup.”
“While canvasback and scaup make up a
relatively small percentage of the overall Wisconsin
harvest, these species are important to many duck
hunters,” said Van Horn. “We may see changes to their
daily bag limits in 2013.”
Breeding canvasbacks were estimated at
787,000, similar to 2012 counts and 37 percent above the
long-term average. This may allow for an increase to a two
canvasback daily bag.
Scaup estimates were at 4.2 million, which was
20 percent below 2012 and 17 percent below the longterm average. This is similar to most recent years. The
scaup harvest strategy is expected to call for a return to a
two bird daily bag limit from last year’s four bird bag.

Ontario, and known as the Mississippi Valley Population,
make up about 60 percent of Wisconsin’s regular season
goose harvest. These geese had a late start to the
breeding season, but surveys indicated good production
and low nest predation. Breeding estimates for 2013 were
at 319,693. This is up 16 percent from last year but 10
percent below the long-term average after several prior
years with lower recruitment.
Wisconsin DNR staff are currently in discussions
at the Mississippi Flyway Council meeting and will have
more information in time for the early August public
waterfowl meetings and hearings [PDF]. For more

New Wisconsin Rustic Road
in Oconto County
Governor Scott Walker has announced the designation
of Wisconsin Rustic Road 113 (R-113) in northern Oconto County.
Otherwise known as Old 32 Road, it begins in the town of
Mountain near County W, passes through the town of Riverview,
and ends in the town of Lakewood at County F.
Old 32 Road spans 9.4 miles through the
Chequamegon/Nicolet National Forest, where beautiful wooded
vistas teem with wildlife and birds. A complementary feature is the
Mountain Fire Tower. It was built in 1934 and is the only fire tower
still standing in the area. R-113 also provides access to the
Nicolet State Trail, cross country ski trails and ATV routes, along
with campsites.
Wisconsin’s Rustic Roads program was started 40
years ago. It was created in 1973 to preserve scenic, lightlytraveled country roads for the leisurely enjoyment of bikers,
hikers and motorists. Rustic Roads range from under two miles to
37 miles in length and have a maximum speed limit of 45 miles per
hour. Unique brown and yellow signs mark the routes of all
officially designated Rustic Roads. The Wisconsin Department of
Transportation oversees the Rustic Roads program; however, the
roads remain under local government jurisdiction.
With the addition of Rustic Road 113, the state’s system
now includes nearly 650 miles of Rustic Roads through 58
Wisconsin counties. For more information on the state’s Rustic

Red Arrow Snowmobile ATV Club has very busy summer
A very busy summer for Red Arrow Snowmobile ATV Club started on Saturday June 29th with a “Family Fun Day”
at Birch Hills Resort in Townsend. The day began with a club meeting and group ATV/UTV ride followed by a fundraiser on
the beach. Nearly $1,000.00 was raised to support a pair of scholarships for the 2014 graduating class at Wabeno High
School and a donation to the Christian Food Pantry in Townsend.
On July 1st and 2nd Red Arrow held a DNR ATV Safety Class at the Townsend Town Hall. A total of 28 students
were enrolled and all passed the test and got their Safety Certificates.
Several important changes have taken place recently. Information about those changes can be found on the
home page of the Red Arrow website . Also, Joe wants to help get the word out that anyone born on or after January 1st,
1988 must take the ATV Safety Course to ride legally in Wisconsin.
The 4th of July parade is always a big event in Townsend and Red Arrow entered two semi-tractor trailers to
celebrate the 45th founding of the club. Formed in 1968 Red Arrow has been long recognized for great trails. The Ultimate
Groomer on one semi and sleds and ATVs from vintage to brand new on the other showed the progression of the sports
over the years.
Finally, Red Arrow will be hosting its 7th Annual Corn Roast and ATV/UTV Parade on the Saturday of Labor Day
Weekend (August 31st). The event will start with a 10:00 a.m. ATV/UTV parade from Townsend Shell to Barb’s Valley Inn
followed by the Corn Roast from 11:00 a.m. till 9:00 p.m. The public is invited to participate in all the activities. Enjoy the
fresh sweet corn, food, DJ Music and meat raffles along with some ice cold refreshments. Barb’s Valley Inn is just north of
Townsend and known area wide for the snowmobile and ATV on the roof. Event proceeds will be used to maintain and
develop snowmobile and ATV/UTV trails in the Townsend area.
