Dear Friends of Search and Care,
For more than 43 years Search and Care
has been helping older men and women
maintain their independence. Through your
generosity, we continue that legacy of
providing the highest quality care to every
older person who needs us. We wouldn’t be
able to do this vital work without you.
A 2014 AARP Bulletin noted that 9 in 10 older
Americans wish to stay at home as they age.
Yet, this is often difficult. From securing benefits and entitlements, bill-paying and organizing
finances, to providing volunteers who care for beloved pets—our social workers, registered
nurse, financial advocates, homecare aide, and volunteer coordinators do everything they
can to fulfill that wish.
This year, with your help, we hope to hire another MSW Care Manager to further reduce
caseloads and provide the highest quality of care, expand our travel companion program,
offer diverse new therapeutic groups and bring essential new services into our communities
that fill a void. Our goal, as always, is to ensure our older neighbors can live out their lives
independently, with quality of life, and peace of mind—as long as is safely feasible.

Mr. & Mrs. R Mrs. R, who was wearing her favorite pink outfit and holding her rosary, opened the door and
warmly greeted Liliana Zumba, bilingual LMSW, welcoming Liliana into her home. In the living room, Mr. R was
watching his telenovelas. Liliana greeted him as he stood up from his recliner, smiling. They were waiting for
Mr. and Mrs. R’s granddaughter, Emily, who helps coordinate Mr. R’s care. Mr. R has suffered from Alzheimer’s
Disease for several years.
Search and Care has been serving Mr. R since 2013—from coordinating health services and home care, to
helping to set up a power of attorney. In fact, when his dementia was not as severe, Mr. R told his granddaughter
that he wanted assistance from our agency to set this up. When asked about his new health aide, Jay, Mrs. R
said, “He’s very good. He’s strict with my husband. Sometimes, my husband doesn’t want to shower or get up,
but Jay gets him to.”
Mr. R pointed for his wife to turn on the fan. He tried to say something to Liliana while pointing to some of
her paperwork, but he could not speak clearly. After Emily arrived, she, Mrs. R, and Liliana gathered around
the kitchen table to discuss the process of obtaining a power of attorney, and how to apply for Medicaid—
including initiating a pooled trust to eliminate the “Medicaid spend-down” or deductible. Mrs. R, walking slowly
from the kitchen into the living room, wanted to check on her husband while Emily affectionately recounted
stories about her grandfather. “Not too long ago, we had some trouble with him playing with the stove, and
also trying to run away when Jay took him for walks. Now, my grandfather mostly stays inside, except for
appointments.” Once Liliana and Emily had prepared some documents, Mrs. R brought her husband into the
kitchen to sign a form. “This is what I usually do,” Emily said as she wrote her grandfather’s name in big letters
on an envelope. “So he can remember how to spell it.” At first, Emily and Mrs. R guided his hand, but he was
determined to do it himself. He stared at the envelope—then back at the form—and started to write. After a
couple of minutes, he signed the document. “That’s so good,” Mrs. R said as everyone congratulated him. He
put his hands in his pockets and smiled.

Client Vignette
Ms. L When our Volunteer Coordinators visited with Ms. L, now 87, she sat down on a tall leather chair in her living
room—eager to tell her unique, often harrowing, life story. Hair cropped short and hand gestures abounding, she
opened with her experience as a sixteen-year-old Israeli soldier and prisoner of war in Jordan during the War of
Independence. “You cannot imagine how it was unless you lived it, nearly 100 degrees. It was absolute torture.”
She paused in reflection, eyes closed. “As prisoners of war, we were told to sit on the sand and they counted us
every day. I mean, who can escape from a desert?” She lowered her hands onto the armrests. “We basically had
no food, just a little piece of pita, hard like a rock. My side was cut open, and they used pieces of my uniform to
bandage it. Incredibly, no one died. I didn’t get an infection. And, after five months, I was finally released. There’s
a word for that—a miracle.” Her experience hasn’t simply been adversity, but many small blessings along the
way. “It’s kind of funny, but I had such little money then. I wouldn’t let that stop me, though.” She smiled while
enunciating, hands on her lap, “I have always been determined. One time, I was in Italy, shopping, and saw some
beautiful shoes.” The owner came up to her and asked if she needed help. “I love these,” Ms. L said, “but I just
cannot afford them.” Maybe it was her charm—the owner offered her a deal. “No problem about the shoes. I
would love for you to be a shoe model for us,” he said. “Well, of course, I accepted his offer,” Ms. L said.
Ms. L has been receiving services from Search and Care since 2002. She enjoys friendly visitors, help with medical
issues and appointments, and upkeep for her cat, Shana (meaning “beautiful” in Hebrew). She has also been a
cherished volunteer at iChoose—our intergenerational mentorship program for inner-city teens. Due to her life
experience, and attitude, she was a favorite among the kids at HS#555 in East Harlem. Although now mostly
homebound, Ms. L still expresses her ever-present joie de vivre, so evident in her speech, energy and enthusiasm.
“I’ve experienced so much,” she continued. “I’ve told my friends and those around me, ‘never give up.’ Hope is
my strongest weapon. Hope keeps me going.”

History
The Reverend Clarke K. Oler, Rector at
The Church of the Holy Trinity (East 88th
St.) observed an increasing incidence of neighborhood
elders who were “falling through the cracks.” Their
frailties (physical, medical, cognitive, emotional), very
limited financial resources, few nearby supports, and a
lack of community programs, were jeopardizing their
ability to age safely at home. Yet, remaining independent,
in the comfort of their own home and community, was
crucial to their sense of dignity and well-being.
With social worker Suzannah Chandler, the aid of a
five-year Good Samaritan Grant, and Reverend Oler’s
vision, Search and Care was founded. Originally
located at The Church of the Holy Trinity (1972-2001)
and later at Madison Avenue Presbyterian Church
(2001-2003), Search and Care relocated to a home of its
own in 2003—the ground floor of Carnegie East House
(1844 Second Avenue, New York City).
From Ms. Chandler’s first year of “searching and
caring” for 72 vulnerable Yorkville and Carnegie Hill
elderly residents, she went on to guide Search and
Care in the role of Executive Director for 34 years. Ms.
Chandler employed a compassionate, comprehensive,
cost-effective model of care that is the basis for how the
agency operates today.
Upon Ms. Chandler’s retirement in June 2006,
Brian C. Kravitz (LCSW, MS.Ed) joined Search and
Care as Executive Director, bringing experience in
aging, having held social work positions at Mt. Sinai
Hospital, JASA and Hudson Guild. Mr. Kravitz,
working collaboratively with Search and Care’s Board
of Directors and agency Staff, is responding to the
needs of today’s aging New Yorkers.
