Message from the Ruck ‘N’ Roll Charity Ball Committee
Po Leung Kuk has been providing a diverse range of social services to the Hong
Kong community since 1878. We are honoured to partner with Hong Kong Rugby
Union Community Foundation in creating a better and quality environment for the
less privileged children. This year, we are excited about the first ever Ruck ‘N’ Roll
Charity Ball to be jointly organised by the Hong Kong Rugby Union Community
Foundation and a group of devoted fundraisers. We are most thankful for being selected as
the beneficiary of the Charity Ball, and will make use of all proceeds to finance a wide range
of programmes such as the scholarship fund, educational, sports and community projects. We
need your support to sustain our services in the long run. Please join us to lift the well-being of
the children in need in the community. Let’s share love with them!

The Hong Kong Rugby Union is delighted to announce the inaugural Ruck ‘N’
Roll Charity Ball, a glittering evening of entertainment and fun with all proceeds
to benefit youngsters from Po Leung Kuk, Hong Kong’s foremost educational
charity. The Union’s Community Foundation and the PLK collaborate together
on a number of sport-for-development initiatives such as “Tackling Life” and
“Tackling English” which uses rugby as a medium to help youngsters realise their potential and
grow in confidence. The Ruck ‘N’ Roll Charity Ball is an exciting next step in this partnership,
and we are proud to be supporting PLK’s invaluable work in our society.

Now on our 15th year, the volunteer fundraising
team led by myself and my wife Celia, with Andy
Chworowsky and Chris Dillon, are happy to be a
part of the Hong Kong Rugby Union Community
Foundation family.
The charity has evolved and grown greatly, thanks to you, the sponsors, and our dedicated
team of volunteers.
We are proud of the fact that each year over 800 children benefit from our language training
centres and over 180 students have been awarded scholarships for university study.
We are also proud that due to our association with the Hong Kong Rugby Union over the past
four years, we have developed a youth rugby programme that reaches out to more than 4,000
youngsters in Po Leung Kuk school system.

A PROJECT CO-SPONSORED BY THE HONG KONG RUGBY UNION CHARITY FUND
The PLK/UBS/HKRU Language Training
Programme (LTP)
The PLK/Sprouts Foundation/HKRU Secondary
Education Services Centre (SESC)
Starting in 2005, we provide extra-curricular English and Putonghua
tuition to the PLK’s 300 residential children, aged 2 to 18 years old, at
the residential homes. Our focus is on small teaching groups with fun,
activity-based learning led by native speaking teachers.
The SESC can accommodate 96 students and provides English
and Interactive Reading programmes to secondary students. Apart
from improving their language skills, the secondary students are
also introduced to new skills like resume writing, preparing for
presentations and reading Putonghua literature.
The PLK/Bank of America Merrill Lynch/HKRU
Children’s Learning Centre (CLC) and the PLK/UBS/
HKRU Child Development Programme (CDP)
These two programmes were set up in Lei Muk Shue to provide
language training and family and child development services to the
estate residents in the area, with more than 200 children benefiting
from the classes.
The CLC and CDP provide English, Putonghua and Storytelling classes
to more than 200 children aged 3-18 from disadvantaged family
backgrounds.
The PLK/UBS/HKRU Baby College
With increased funding from UBS, the CDP was able to set up the
Baby College, a service that works closely with pregnant women and
their families and provides structured parent and child programmes to
help the baby have a complete developmental workout and improve
the relationship between young children and their parents.
The PLK/Sprouts Foundation/HKRU Education
Services Centre (ESC)
The ESC provides English, Putonghua and Storytelling programmes
to primary school children from disadvantaged families in Tai Wai.
The centre can accommodate 120 students and provides classes to
improve the children’s language skills, increase their confidence and
improve their performance in school.
PLK/Henrik Nielsen/HKRU Scholarship Fund
The Po Leung Kuk Scholarship Fund helps students from Hong Kong’s
low-income families who wish to pursue tertiary education and has
supported 180 scholarship recipients through their college and
university education. The project has graduate scholars currently
working as lawyers, doctors, nurses, accountants, bankers and
entrepreneurs running their own businesses who are giving back to
the community that helped them when they needed help the most.
The PLK/HKRU Tackling Life and Tackling
English Programme
The HKRU successfully partnered with PLK for the “Tackling Life”
and “Tackling English” projects, a notable collaboration that has
introduced the game of rugby to over 4,000 PLK youngsters in the
residential care centre, language training centres and 19 primary
schools. At the same time, the programme develops the children’s
English language and communications skills as coaching instructions
are done in English.
The PLK/HKRU Pitch Perfect Project
The project built a rugby pitch at PLK Tai Tong Holiday Camp where
the youngsters could come and practice the rugby skills they have
learned on the basketball courts of their schools.
Touraid Festival of Rugby 2015
A Life Changing Experience
By Kobe Ko
Through a kind referral from the Hong Kong Rugby Union, we
are so pleased and honoured to have been invited again by
Touraid to join last year’s Festival of Rugby for the Under 13
boys. Ten groups of U13 boys from nine countries met in the
UK from the 30th of September to the 10th of October 2015.
This trip reinforces Touraid’s slogan: What goes on tour no
longer stays on tour, it stays with you for life. For our boys, it
was a life changing experience.
Reflections from the students:
Benson (F.1)
I miss my friends from Hockerill and my host family a
lot. They took very good care of me. I also realized
how much I love playing rugby, the feeling of tackling
somebody is awesome. I want to be a rugby player
playing for Hong Kong when I grow up.
Tony (F.1)
I miss the time that we climbed a tree in the backyard of the host family, we are never allowed
to climb trees in Hong Kong! I still keep in touch with my host family through email after I came
back to Hong Kong. I hope I can see them again one day and they promise they will come
and visit me.
Mike (P.6)
I am a lot more confident of speaking English with foreigners now as I kept speaking English to
my UK friends and host family in the 10 days. I want to improve my English so that I can better
communicate with them when I have the chance to see them later.
Ian (P.5)
The training before the trip was the most difficult part for me as I was not a sporty person and
the training required a lot of physical strength. But I was so happy that I made it at the end.
Though children from the other countries were a lot more skillful then us, we did our best in
every game and we enjoyed a lot and learnt a lot from the other players on the rugby pitch.
Our Loyal Sponsors:
Flex-Box Ltd and Worldwide Flight Services
The Reasons They Support Our Projects
Flex-Box, headed by Henrik Nielsen, has been a loyal sponsor of our
charity for the past 13 years. He is a major supporter of the Po Leung
Kuk Scholarship Fund that helps students from Hong Kong’s low income
families who wish to pursue tertiary education. He firmly believes in the
value of education and giving the most vulnerable children in our society the opportunity to
higher education.
Nielsen has been a full time resident of Hong Kong since 1989 and his firm commitment to the
Po Leung Kuk Scholarship Fund is his way of giving back to the community that has nurtured
and supported him for the past 26 years.
“Charity begins at home and seeing the success of our graduated scholars gives me great joy
and pride,” said Henrik. “It encourages me to continue supporting this worthwhile project.”
Nielsen is a maritime entrepreneur, investor, founder and owner of Flex-Box Limited, a
private company that is a leading worldwide supplier of new shipping, storage and reefer
refrigerated containers. They specialise in manufacturing shipping containers to meet customers
requirements, whether it is to move an unusual cargo or serve a specific purpose in their
business: www.flex-box.com
Thoughts from Barry Nassberg, Group Chief Operating Officer,
Worldwide Flight Services: Worldwide Flight Services (WFS) is one of the
founding sponsors of the charity ball and one of very few that have been
involved with this fundraising event continuously for 15 years. As a French
company operating at 145 airports on five continents, our involvement with community support is
an important element of our integration into society in each country. This is a value instilled by our
Chairman, having set examples of corporate commitment to social goals in France going back to the
company founding in 1971, long before Corporate Social Responsibility became fashionable.
When we established ourselves in Hong Kong in 1996, we were keen to find a worthy partner.
The charity’s objective of allowing young people from challenging backgrounds to develop their full
potential fit very well with our own ethos.
Aside from the important charitable mission, the charity ball is a key event in Hong Kong’s
social calendar. It gives us the opportunity to offer customers and business partners from
around Asia a unique evening of entertainment and is also an opportunity for our local staff to
contribute to the mission.
WFS has reaffirmed its continuing support for this important event and we look forward to being a
sponsor for years to come.
Kobe Ko is the Assistant Director of Studies of Po Leung Kuk/Sprouts Foundation Education Services Centre and
Secondary Education Services Centre.
