Golf Maintenance Update from Glenn
I want to thank all the members and guests who continue to play golf during these challenging
days. It’s May 21, 2015 at 1:00 o’clock in the afternoon and as I write this I look out at a misty
rain that just refuses to stop. The wet weather this month is historical. As I understand it there
has only been one month of May on record that was wetter – and we’re not done yet. We’ve
already had 9.09 inches of rain for the month with 10 days remaining. The challenges for the
Golf Maintenance staff have been numerous. We can’t mow with regularity. We have dealt
with flooding, clean up, washed out bunkers, debris, sloppy conditions, lost hours, stuck equipment, cold and one dead bear that washed down onto the course from the drainage above
#16. Thankfully DOW came and got that and took it away for us. We can’t do much about this
weather but when we can work we will and we’ll do our best to prepare the course and make it
playable. I do ask the membership, guests and fellow employees to be patient as we work
through this period. We’ll try to get the course
back to normal playing conditions as soon as
possible once the weather lets us. Believe me,
we’re looking forward to that as much as you.
Thanks again. Have fun and stay dry!
Glenn Samuelson
Golf Course Superintendent

LIGHTNING SAFETY
As golfers we all need to be aware of the potential danger that lightning strikes can pose on the
golf course. The Club Golf Staff will warn golfers when dangerous weather is approaching by
emitting a single long blast from an air horn and our ThorGuard Lightning Protection System.
When the area is clear of potentially dangerous weather and it is safe to return to the golf
course, ThorGuard will blow three short blasts in rapid succession. These warnings are not
mandatory course evacuations, but are a strong recommendation by the staff that discontinuing
play is the prudent action to take at that time. It is always the golfer’s final decision at The
Country Club of Colorado to continue play during a severe weather warning if they choose to
take that risk.
