In our opinion Mr. Ed Boll of the Edward A. Boll Company in Holland, PA is the best Heat Treat manufacturer’s representative in North America (and that includes ourselves). Ed has been in this industry for as long as I can remember covering the US Northeast and represents some of the best known suppliers to the heat treat industry. I never thought this would happen but Ed has teamed up with another fellow, Mr. John Oakes who is actually the brother of Mr. Jim Oakes of SSI (oxygen probes, control systems). I have no doubt but that the two will work well together and that by the time he is finished Ed will have John thoroughly "whipped into shape". John will be concentrating on the New England area. The photo below is from a couple of years ago and shows Ed on the right. January 31/2013 www.themonty.com Business Opportunities. If you are looking for good qualified people we can guarantee that over 20,000 heat treaters per month will see your ad. January 31/2013 Asian Furnace Builders. Recently we had comments about Asian furnace builders and their ability to break into the European and North American heat treating markets. Janusz Kowalewski of AFC-Holcroft in China responded to our thoughts with some really interesting facts and figures about furnace builders around the world. His comments are based upon the fact that he took it upon himself not that long ago to put together a very comprehensive list of furnace builders around the world. To his comments we will add these points. When he refers to the three largest furnace builders having annual sales of $480 to $530 million USD he is of course referring to Aichelin GesmbH in Austria, Ipsen in German and Seco Warwick of Poland (Seco by the way aims to have $300 million USD in annual sales by 2016). Another point to mention is that the majority of these companies are private or institutional investors and their sales figures are not published so any estimates of the total size of the market is to some extent educated guesses. January 30/2013 "On my furnace manufacturer list, there are 217 companies that include 90% to 95% of heat treatment furnaces made in the world. This list does not include induction furnace www.themonty.com Intensive Quenching Workshop. April 24, 2013 IQ Technologies Inc., will be holding a one-day workshop designed to provide you with an overview of the IntensiQuench® processes and production IQ equipment, examine the data from actual case studies, and give you a forum to discuss the use of intensive quenching for your products, this will be held in Cleveland, Ohio. If you are not familiar with IntensiQuench® it is a process which uses water as a quenching medium as opposed to oil, water, salt or gas quenching. It is an interesting process, it has been around for some time and it undoubtedly offers some very impressive benefits. For one reason or another it is has not to date enjoyed widespread acceptance in the worldwide heat treating industry but for those of you with an open mind and interested in considering alternatives to oil, salt, gas or polymer quenching this workshop would probably be of a great deal of interest. The photo below shows from the left Mr. Joe Powell and Dr. Michael Aronov who are the experts on the process and Mr. Gord Montgomery on the right. For further details I would suggest contacting Joe at jpowell73@neo.rr.com January 31/2013 Advanced Heat Treat Corp./Registered Trademark. From Advanced Heat Treat Corp. in the US we have this announcement. Advanced is the largest commercial Ion Nitrider in North America and has facilities in Waterloo, IA, Cullman, AL and Monroe, MI. The photo below was taken a couple of years ago at the company’s facility in Waterloo, Iowa. January 30/2013 "WATERLOO, IA — UltraOx® becomes registered trademark of Advanced Heat Treat Corp. Advanced Heat Treat Corp. (AHT) has been granted a registered trademark on the term UltraOx®, the name of its unique thermochemical heat treatment process. The registration establishes Advanced Heat Treat Corp.’s legal ownership of the UltraOx® name for market research and related businesses; it shows that AHT has established a distinct identity in the marketplace, and that AHT’s claim to the term has been established through consistent and long term use. Advanced Heat Treat's UltraOx® treatment can further improve the corrosion resistance properties attained by the nitriding cycle. Independent third party labs have witnessed 400+ hours in salt spray tests. This is a thermochemical heat treat and passivation process in which oxygen bonds with ferrous alloys at a low processing temperature. This process also produces an aesthetic, smooth black finish on the part. UltraOx® combines corrosion resistance with wear protection through increased hardness at the surface. Additionally, this process offers the advantage of a measurable increase in fatigue strength in comparison to other processes such as chrome plating, powder coating and nickel plating. "The Patent and Trade Office has affirmed that the name UltraOx® is as unique and distinctive as our other processes, including UltraGlow®," said Mikel Woods, Senior VP of Sales and Marketing. "We feel that offering this process to our customers will further enhance the corrosion resistance of their parts and are excited to have the name www.themonty.com companies, vacuum melting and companies specializing on furnaces for the steel industry. Total annual sales of these 217 companies are around $2.4 to $2.7 billion. The annual sales of the three biggest furnace companies in the world are in range $480 to $530 million. The world 10 biggest companies’ annual sales are in the range of $850 to $890 million. If we take to consideration the number of furnaces built per year, some Chinese companies should be included in the first 10 biggest furnace builders group. Fendong arguably one of the biggest Chinese furnace company sales is in range $35 to $45 million. The biggest Indian furnace company is about $12 to $15 million. Without question, the strongest and most advanced furnace builders are located in the US, Canada, Japan and four European countries. In the past twenty years, we can observe worldwide an equalization of heat treatment competence and general furnace designs. What are still missing from most Asian’s furnaces are quality components, manufacturing process efficiency and technical documentation. Building furnaces and heat treatment are considered a truly local market oriented industry. The national electrical, environmental, safety codes and most importantly efficient service and spare parts requirements favor the local companies. Only few furnaces are designed from a global prospective, and these furnaces are manufactured in the US and Europe. Material cost equalization between Asia and the USA will make 80% of imported furnaces cost prohibitive to ship across Atlantic or Pacific. Some furnaces that fit into standards 40 feet container will cross Atlantic and Pacific but not in significant numbers. So, Gordy, you have historical and statistical data on your side. We will not have a noticeable penetration of the US market by Asian furnace companies any time soon." Seco Warwick. The press release below tells us of a change in the management structure at new furnace builder Seco Warwick headquartered in Poland. Buried in the press release is a statement about sales increasing 30% between 2012 and 2013 which is quite impressive. Please note that when the company mentions the acquisition of a service company in Germany they are referring to the company previously known as NESPI. January 29/2013 "Control of the manufacturing sites SECO/WARWICK Europe (Poland), SECO/WARWICK Corporation and Retech (both USA), SECO/WARWICK Retech (China), SECO/WARWICK Allied (India) and the service sites SECO/WARWICK Service (Germany) and SECO/WARWICK Russia (Russia) have been consolidated under the SECO/WARWICK Group. Seco/Warwick now consists of a holding located in Świebodzin, Poland, which is listed on the Warsaw stock exchange and which keeps the shares and control of the manufacturing sites S/W Europe (Poland), S/W Corporation and Retech (both USA), S/W Retech (China), S/W Allied (India) and the service sites S/W Service (Germany) and S/W Russia (Russia). The S/W holding has a lean structure, in which five vice presidents control the five business segments: vacuum technology (VAC), atmosphere technology (ATM), aluminum processes (AP), controlled atmosphere brazing (CAB) and vacuum metallurgy equipment (VME/Retech). The holding is globally responsible for functions such as procurement, HR and finances. A contractual frame takes care of the legal, logistical and technological cooperation between the global sites of the group. Seco/Warwick's new structure achieves a better penetration of the markets and a better service of local and international operating customers. The ambitious targets that the group set with the duplication of the turnover within 5 years are feasible with the new structure - as a matter of fact, the turnover has already increased about 30% between 2012 and 2013. At the end of 2012 a further step for the exploitation of the west European market was carried out by the acquisition of a service www.themonty.com trademarked and protected." "LIVONIA, Mich. – Jan. 25, 2013 – More than 30 designers and engineers went “back to college” to learn how Austempered Ductile Iron (ADI) could work in their manufacturing operations. The first ever AP University, hosted by Applied Process, Inc. was held in January at Eastern Michigan University on the Livonia Campus and Joyworks Studio in Ann Arbor, MI. The program was so successful that plans are in the works for another session. The three-day event was created to educate those who design engineered components on how to best utilize the opportunities provided by ductile iron and ADI. Curriculum covered a range of topics and was taught by industry professionals. Classes covered the casting process, castability studies, casting issues and resolutions, successful weldment to casting conversions, an introduction to ADI, Austempering 101, ADI applications in gearing and applications of casting conversions. Attendees toured the Applied Process plant and visited Joyworks, a metalworking studio focused on research and education owned by John R. Keough, Chairman of Applied Process. “We are passionate about our products and processes,” explained Vasko Popovski, Director of Sales and Marketing for Applied Process. “In this economy, companies are facing the problem of cutting costs while still providing a quality product. We believe casting and ADI are the solution and brought industry leaders together to show them the added value, not only for them – but for their customers as well.” Kathy Hayrynen, Ph.D., of Applied Process explains the heat treatment of cast irons at AP University. Joyworks Studio personnel inoculating a ladle of ductile iron. www.themonty.com Applied Process ADI University. In the world of heat treating the ADI process occupies a unique niche. While a relatively small portion of the heat treating market in the right application it is a process which can't be beat. The world's largest commercial vendor of the process Applied Process in Livonia, MI has this to tell us. January 29/2013 Applied Process engineer Justin Lefevre examines newly cast parts with AP University student Andrew Sahlstrom of Dotson Iron Castings. www.themonty.com Companies that choose to create products through castings can often cut down on production time and cost while offering their customers a product designed specifically for their needs. These products are often stronger than those modified through welding. “The event was much more than expected,” explained Tim Covert, Senior Material Engineer at Ford Motor Company. “We deal with ADI, but I was new to casting design. I was impressed, not only by the process, but by the knowledge and professionalism shown by the Applied Process Staff.” Austempering is an isothermal heat treatment that produces a structure that is stronger than those created by conventional heat treatments. Austempered Ductile Iron (ADI) is a specialty heat-treated material that creates a lighter, stronger, quieter and more wear resistant part. Bill Maenle, Engineer and Product Design at Unverferth Mfg., has dealt with ADI in the past. “Moving from welding to casting has allowed us more flexibility which means we can best cater to the needs of specific soil conditions. In my experience, ADI provides a better product with more reliability.” Maenle was one of many in attendance whose company had previous experience and current applications in ADI. Other companies that were new to casting conversions sent representatives to gain a general knowledge. Many attendees who were new to ductile iron, more specifically ADI, left AP University with a knowledge base that will allow them to convert and improve current and future projects. “I am a chemist by degree and knew little about heat treatments and metals three days ago,” admitted Michael Schmidt, Business Manager at Pennsy. “As we move into metals I am confident we will find applications for ADI.” Due to high demand Applied Process already has plans to hold its second AP University. Visit www.appliedprocess.com for information about attending the next AP University. About Applied Process: Applied Process Inc. is a worldwide family of commercial heat treats specializing in the Austempering process. Applied Process makes iron and steel parts tougher, stronger, lighter, quieter and more wear resistant and is the world leader in the processing of Austempered Ductile Iron (ADI). AP University student Scott Seckel of Waupaca Foundry (www.waupacafoundry.com) and Vasko Popovski of Applied Process with a newly cast part. "Being in China I visit many Chinese Furnace builders and this month I visited a premier Chinese Continuous Furnace Manufacturing Facility, Suzhou Xin Ling Electric Furnace Company in Suzhou China. www.xl-furnace.cn whose main product lines include Carburizing / Hardening Furnaces , Tempering Furnaces, Roller Hearth Furnaces, Pusher Furnaces, Wire Annealing, and Muffle Furnaces. The company in general uses Nitrogen Methanol systems for atmosphere with propane enriching gas, however they also have started building units that use Endothermic gas. The Manufacturer is diversified enough to also build Natural Gas Carburizing Mesh Belt Lines as well. The General Capacity of their Mesh Belt Line units differ in the cycles , Medium Carbon and High Carbon Steel 124 / 138 kg hr ~ Low Carbon Steel 48~ 69kg hr on a belt width 400mm Heating Range 3000mm to Medium and High Carbon Steel 1800 / 1980 kg hr ~ Low Carbon Steel 1499 / 1650 kg hr with a belt width of 1200mm and Heating Length of 12000mm. The Temperature these Furnaces are rated for is 820 ~ 950C. Mr. Sun President , Leo Shi, and Scott The Company also produces all the Auxiliary Equipment for the lines such as Magnetic Loading, Pre and Post Washing, Quenching Systems, De-Oiling , Drying and Dip Systems for Rust Preventatives. So you may ask yourself what sets this Chinese Furnace Maker apart? This company is making the changes necessary to compete with the big boys on the block and be diversified enough to change the designs and component's to increase the quality and safety instead of just wanting to have the cheapest price. They also offer customized furnaces and a selection of control and data acquisition systems to comply with CQI-9 Standards such as the SSI Super Data System or with their standard control software package. Another option is the controller selection RKC or Eurotherm Controllers. I have also introduced them to the U.S. and European Thermocouple as an option to the lower quality Chinese thermocouples. Some of the other changes for Safety and Compliance are the removal of water jacket cooling fans and water jacket oil cooling to be replaced with air cooled systems. Their standard Carbon Probe is the Marathon probe but they are considering changing over to the Gold Probe Series due to SSI's excellent customer service and performance in the field . www.themonty.com Scott Workman / Suzhou Xin Ling Electric Furnace Company. Scott Workman is a very experienced heat treater who is currently located in China. He sent us this press release about a furnace manufacturer he recently visited in that country. January 28/2013 Suzhou Xin Ling Electric Furnace Co. is ISO 9001 compliant and is in pursuit of TS16949 compliance. Their own internal fastener heat treating facility is aiming for CQI-9 for the automotive market. I visited one of the customers of Xin Ling which was Chanshu Changli Fastener Company who are running two Mesh Belt furnace lines that are 50 meters in length that are doing Carburizing, hardening and tempering and which average 800kg/hour. The furnace in the accompanying photo has been in operation for 5 yrs and the belt quality is still in very exceptional shape due to the design of the furnace. So who is using this little known furnace company? The final OEM's are Shanghai Volkswagen, Bao Gong Steel, Cherry Automotive and companies involved in the chain and fastener industries mainly exporting to Europe and North America. Xin Ling is also in the process of opening its new facility for Belt furnace production. While visiting the facility in Changshu I noticed that the ever expanding Automotive sector is growing rapidly with a number of million square meter facilities for brands such as Land Rover , Jaguar, Ooros and Cherry with three plants all getting ready to start up within 6 to 12 months. These plants are both for component manufacturing and final assembly. Contact information for Suzhou Xin Ling Furnace Company: Mr. Sun President : sunxueming888@sohu.com +86-512-65025888-818. Just the other day I had a spirited discussion with a fellow about whether Asian furnace builders (specifically Chinese and Indian companies) would ever gain a significant toehold in the European or North American markets. His contention was yes, mine was no. Asian builders have made enormous strides over the years and in some cases their quality is second to none, Fendong (China) and Hi Temp (India) are two that come to mind. Throw in lower labor costs and this should be a perfect fit-right? Not in our opinion at least not for the foreseeable future. From time to time we have run across Asian furnaces in North America and some western furnace builders have partnered with Asian companies in an attempt to enjoy the lower labor costs of Asia (CEC in Georgia is an example having partnered with Lakshmi Vacuum Heat Treaters in India and Fendong in China a few years back-not sure how this ever worked out) but at the end of the day market share for Asian furnace builders in Europe or North America has to be far less than 1% of the market and we see no sign of this growing. (We will mention one exception and that is Japanese furnace builders who have been successful in both areas BUT this is generally because they are selling to Japanese based companies). The reasons Asian companies have been not yet been successful are many and varied with the obvious first one being that with the growth in Asia furnace builders have very little incentive to attempt new markets-quite the reverse in fact with Western furnace builders attempting to gain market share in Asia. Second is the fact that the cost savings are not as large as would be expected with much higher shipping costs and longer delivery times. Third with local support, service and spare parts not being locally available many prospective buyers are rather loath to take the chance on buying an unsupported high ticket item. But most importantly is the fact that there are a number of absolutely top notch, long established local builders in Europe and North America that you can’t go wrong with that even in a time of short resources the vast bulk of buyers will not seriously consider going with what to them is an unknown. While I have an enormous amount of respect for a number of the Indian and Chinese furnace builders I have run across I do not believe they will make much headway in Europe or North America without making very large investments and being willing to be very patient. By their very nature all press releases are to some extent self promoting but generally they contain some very useful information and the one below from Ipsen certainly caught our attention. What the company is seeing is very strong growth in continuous furnaces and mentioned in this press release is the fact that Ipsen is currently building four large 2 row pusher furnaces. It is a well known fact that while batch furnaces are far more flexible but on the other side of the coin when it comes to the price/pound you cannot beat a continuous furnace provided you have the volumes required. In the depths of the recession in 2009 continuous furnaces were being scrapped left, right and centre in particular pusher style furnaces (I still remember Ford, Sterling Heights, MI scrapping two really nice pushers in 2009-it still bothers me) but with a growing economy the popularity of continuous furnaces is as strong or stronger than ever. January 24/2013 “Business with Continuous Heat Treatment Furnaces is Booming. KLEVE, Germany – As new approaches to energy-efficient furnace operation are met with heightened interest by a diverse customer base, Ipsen has reported healthy sales, especially of continuous heat treatment systems, with specialized heat treatment systems defying the overall trend.Ipsen, the global market leader in the heat treating equipment, is pleased to report a rising www.themonty.com 1. Gas carburizing Nitro carburizing (now with the new HydroNit®-Sensor technology) Free choice of process gases, including use of synthetic gases Free hardening in a one- or two-stage oil quench bath Hardening in a multiple-stage hardening press Increasing use of mass-flow controllers to control the composition of the process gases The consultation services offered by Ipsen’s process engineers are more important than ever, thanks to Ipsen’s ability to provide various furnace designs, such as rotary hearth and pusher furnaces with one- to threetrack layouts. These consultations, which often lead directly to the procurement of a customized furnace, are available to the most diverse customer groups in Europe, India, China and the United States. As one experience heat treatment engineer explained: “At other companies, the plant construction people do the consultation looking at the construction plans. At Ipsen, the process engineers come out and take your production plan, as well as the materials flow, into account all at the same time. That’s a huge advantage.” Ipsen’s pusher furnaces offer a continuous throughput of parts under a protective gas atmosphere. They are tried and tested for a wide range of applications. The sturdy construction of Ipsen furnaces makes them particularly suitable for heavy workloads. Ipsen delivers one- and multi-track furnaces for a wide range of requirements. The distinguishing feature of both construction designs is their great production flexibility. Currently, four large, two-track, pusher-type furnaces are being produced, assembled and delivered to customers in the US. At the same time, other models are under development for new applications. For further information, please visit www.ipsen.de. About Ipsen, Inc. Ipsen has production locations in Europe, America and Asia. These locations, along with representation in 34 countries, guarantee that customers will receive www.themonty.com demand in the combined 2011 and 2012 fiscal years. Expected turnover for the construction of continuous furnaces alone is expected to surpass a total of €25 million ($33 million), with a consistent upward trend. Ipsen furnaces, which are well suited to the hardening of steel for highly specialized applications, such as drive train or axle construction, have been in especially high demand ever since Ipsen further expanded its industry leadership position in the area of energy optimization. Ipsen offers complete and comprehensive advice to its customers on all applications of heat treatment technology and process engineering, focusing on traditional technologies including: the best possible service. Ipsen serves a diverse range of industries, including Medical Technology, Wind Energy, Aerospace and Automotive. In Ipsen’s advanced thermal processing systems, steel and other materials are strengthened through different processes in order to operate in demanding applications such as engines, gears and power generation.” “ALD recently made some organizational changes. The CEO of ALD is Dr. Markus Holz who has held this position since October of 2012, the CFO is Dr. Matthias Haeberle, and the Managing Director Technical is Karl-Heinz Grosse who took over the position at the beginning of this year replacing Mr. Richard Seemann who just retired (although he continues to work as a consultant). In an additional change Mr. Robert Peters who was previously VP of Heat Treating has been promoted to Senior VP of Business Development. Robert will continue to be based in Port Huron, Michigan.” John Rush/Thermal Vac. Heading out to California we have a press release from commercial heat treater, Thermal Vac who is one of the larger heat treaters on the US west www.themonty.com ALD. Our Monday morning briefing this week included some notes about organizational changes at ALD (see below) which has prompted us to mention a few more details about the company. ALD is part of the Advanced Materials Group N.V (AMG for short) which has a total of 7 divisions of which ALD is one. ALD focuses on three areas, vacuum furnace systems, nuclear applications and commercial heat treating which in total generated sales of $319 Million USD in 2011. The heat treatment portion of the company consists of 3 plants around the world, VACUHEAT GmbH in Limbach-Oberfrohna, Germany established in 1999, ALD Thermal Treatment, Inc. in Port Huron, MI, USA established in 2005 and ALD Tratamientos Termicos, S.A. de C.V. in Ramos Arizpe, Mexico which was established in 2007. All emphasize vacuum carburizing primarily of automotive transmission components. The commercial heat treatment group is run by Mr. Jorg Molz who has been with the company for a number of years. Total sales for the heat treating group are-well we had better check with the Managing Director of ALD whether we can mention this but we can say this; each of these locations is far larger than the average commercial heat treat facility and we would guess that the Port Huron facility with 38 vacuum carburizing chambers is probably the largest single shop location in North America. The photos below show the Port Huron location as we saw it last week. January 23/2013 coast. The company specializes in “high end” vacuum, brazing and coatings largely for the aerospace industry. We searched through our file photos and came up with the one below taken a couple of years ago which shows the founder and owner of the company Mr. Steve Driscol second from the left. January 23/2013 Vacuum & Atmosphere Services/UK. It would appear that furnace rebuilder, spare parts and controls company Vacuum & Atmosphere Services in the UK is growing in the form of an acquisition. "Vacuum and Atmosphere Services Ltd, UK, are pleased to announce the purchase of Aabco Handling Ltd, UK. January 22/2013 Nitrex Inc. Chris Morawski, President of commercial heat treater Nitrex Inc., sent us this news item; “Gord, I am pleased to let you know that we finally have a nationwide airing of the TV piece on Nitrex. It will be shown on Fox Business Network on Sunday, January 27, at 4 PM EST. It is a simultaneous broadcast so it is 3 PM CST, 2 PM Mountain Time and 1 PM www.themonty.com “Thermal-Vac Technology, Inc. has named John Rush as their new Director of Sales. This move is actually a return to the company for John as he previously spent twelve years at Thermal-Vac in the early growth stages of the company. He got his start in the industry at the former Techni-Braze, Inc. before beginning his first tour at Thermal-Vac. John is tasked with the management of existing and new accounts as well as helping to facilitate the company’s future growth plans. “We are pleased to have John back with our company and look forward to his experience and industry knowledge in leading to the future growth of Thermal-Vac Technology,” Aaron Anderson, President. Thermal-Vac Technology is a southern California based provider of high temperature brazing, heat treating and specialized coatings.” Pacific. The scheduling is excellent. We are told this could be available at over 68 million households, and we are very excited as this is probably the most widely shown TV piece on heat treatng in recent memory. As you know our industry does not get a lot of attention in the public domain so this is indeed a rare event. Further updates will be posted on: http://www.nitrex.com/english/current_news_TV.htm.” January 22/2013 www.themonty.com Monday Morning Briefing. Mr. Wynn Kearns who was formerly with new furnace builder CMI is now Director of Sales & Marketing with Rad-Con. Rad-Con is a furnace builder who specializes in batch furnaces and Wynn will be handling the batch hydrogen bell furnaces for strip and wire coils, along with the company’s CAPS© control system for bell anneal system management. Wynn chose to make a change of direction and from what we can tell it took him about 1 week to find a new position proving what we often say that good, experienced people in this industry are hard to find. And speaking of good people it is always a shame when the industry loses an experienced person in this case we are talking about Butch Molenaur who was in the heat treating industry for 30 years and who has just retired. We have this note from Butch. “After 30 years in the Heat Treat Industry and 25 years at Williams Industrial Service I have retired. I am currently working on lowering my golf handicap and my saltwater fishing skills. I would like to thank all the people I have met and dealt with in the past and wish them all the best in the future.” Asco Industries is a supplier of aerospace components based in Belgium who announced last year that they were setting up a brand new plant in the US. “Asco invests in a production site in Stillwater Oklahoma to install its manufacturing center of excellence for the Americas. • The plant will include machining, heat and surface treatment and assembly of complex machined parts out of titanium, steel and aluminum. • The site adds to Asco’s facilities in the United States, already including a design center in Washington. • This step represents a strategic fit in Asco’s consolidation as a preferred supplier to its clients.” This facility will include an in house heat treating department which will include several brand new vacuum furnaces although we don’t believe an order has yet been placed. It’s always impressive to see a progressive company such as Asco making such a large investment to better serve their customers. Along the same lines we recently heard that Oerlikon Drive Systems in Suzhou, China recently installed an in-house heat treating department to heat treat drive components. Oerlikon is a worldwide supplier for gear, drive and shifting solutions with companies such as Fairfield Manufacturing in the US and Graziano Transmissioni in Italy being part of the group. Oerlikon has made major investments in a number of their plants recently. To round things out for today ALD recently made some organizational changes. ALD is part of the AMG Group which has 3 divisions, which are mining, advanced materials and engineering, with ALD belonging to the engineering division. ALD is a provider of heat treating services with 3 locations, 1 in Germany, 1 in the US and one in Mexico and also a supplier of new furnaces probably best known for their vacuum carburizing systems. In an additional change Mr. Robert Peters who was previously VP of Heat Treating has been promoted to Senior VP of Business Development. Robert will continue to be based in Port Huron, Michigan. The photo below was taken last week at ALD’s heat treatment facility in Port Huron, Michigan. January 21/2013 ROHDE Schutzgasöfen GmbH/Heat Treat Specialists. German furnace builder Rohde was in the news recently after providing what we would consider the world's largest pit carburizing furnace to German gear manufacturer and heat treater Reese in Bochum, Germany. Today they grace our pages for a different reason, the announcement of an order for a salt recovery unit from commercial heat treater "Heat Treat Specialists" in Logansport, Indiana. Rohdetherm. ROHDE Schutzgasöfen GmbH recently installed a salt recovery unit in Logansport, Indiana, at hti “Heat Treat Specialists”. Chico Rodriguez and Matt Gluth of hti previously visited the Rohde plant in Germany last year. Salt recovery units are able to recover quench salts from the wash water to obtain salt-free water and clean reusable quench salt in liquid or solid form. This allows for reduced costs for new salt and is environmentally friendly. Rohde has already sold a large number of these SRUs in Europe and is now promoting this product in the US where they have seen a great deal of interest. For sales, maintenance and service Rohde is represented in the US by Dan Miller from Honor Equipment & Repair in North Carolina. For further info on Rohde SRUs you can visit their website: www.rohdetherm.com In the picture below you see from left to right Chico Rodriguez (hti), Natasha & Jörn Rohde, Matt Gluth (hti), Dan Miller (Honor Equipment) January 18/2013 "CHERRY VALLEY, IL – Ipsen USA is pleased to welcome Art Tsubaki to the Ipsen USA Team as Vice President of Sales. January 18/2013 Seco/Warwick/Vacuum Furnace Order. Now this is pretty cool. You can read the details below but to sum up this new furnace builder has received an order for a monster of a vacuum furnace with working dimensions of 18 feet in diameter and 39 feet high which is mind boggling. January 16/2013 "SECO/WARWICK BUILDING ONE OF THE WORLD’s largest vacuum furnaces for General Atomics. Meadville, PA. In the last quarter of 2012, following approximately two years of negotiations, SECO/WARWICK solicited an order for delivery of one of the world’s largest vacuum furnaces for heat treatment. The furnace will heat treat coils designated for building of a new thermonuclear reactor ITER under construction in France. The project has attracted the major companies from all over the world which deal in specialized nuclear technology. SECO/WARWICK will deliver a furnace which will be installed in California at General Atomics, known for constructing such high-tech equipment as super-speed magnetic trains, nuclear power stations and unmanned aircraft. Apart from its extensive dimensions: 18 feet in diameter and 39 feet high when opened, the furnace is capable of heating a 125 ton coil up to 1200o F while maintaining process purity within the range of a single ppm. In order to secure such a perfect degree of purity, nearly the entire furnace will be manufactured of stainless steel. About 80 tons of stainless steel will used to construct the unit. One of the crucial factors is ensuring continuous multi-day operation of the furnace. Due to the continuous treatment, the processed coil changes its physical properties and turns into a superconductor. In order to provide continuous operation, the unit will feature redundant control systems and specially doubled heating system solutions, both convective and gaseous. Furthermore, considering the location of the heat treating plant, the furnace is being designed with due consideration of the risk of an earthquake. Despite its dimensions, the entire furnace will be designed, constructed and tested at SECO/WARWICK facilities in Świebodzin, Poland. Due to the complexity of the project the work is scheduled for 17 months and the shipment is planned for February 2014. www.themonty.com Beaver Heat Treating of Portland, OR. The furnaces have working dimensions of 84” x 180” x 96”, a capacity of 40,000 lbs. each and operate at 400 degree F to 2000 degree F with a state of the art combination pulse fired/excess air combustion system to maximize uniformity and fuel efficiency. The turn-around on these furnaces will be 3 months. McLaughlin Services is also providing a gas fired RX Generator with many features: quick and easy maintenance, access to all components, quick and easy expansion capabilities, and powered by SSI Controls. These RX Generators are available for long or short term rental. McLaughlin Services can be reached at 260-897-HEAT (4328) or Jeff’s cell: 260-318-0432. In the world of commercial heat treating we have always ranked Dutch based Aalberts Industries as the third largest in the world. Largely based in Europe with companies such as Hauck Gruppe, AHC, TTI in the UK and with Accurate Brazing and Ionic Technologies in the US Aalberts has concentrated on both heat treating and surface treatment operations. Just recently the company added another surface treatment facility to their group, "Flamm" in Moers, Germany. As far as we can tell this is the only acquisition the company has made in the heat treating or surface treatment areas in quite some time. January 16/2013 "Aalberts Industries N.V. has reached an agreement to acquire 100% of the shares of GFFlamm-Metallspritz-GmbH ("Flamm"), active with one production facility in Moers, Germany, with an annual revenue of EUR 6 million and approximately 30 employees. Flamm is specialised in surface treatment by means of a thermal spraying technology. Also products are treated with specialised machinery before and/or after the surface treatment in order to meet the high specification demands of customers. This technology is globally applied in many markets, such as energy, turbine, oil & gas, machine building and industry. Flamm's existing management will continue to lead the company and will work closely together with the management of Group Material Technology. The additional thermal spraying technology, combined with the strong network of Industrial Services' surface treatment activities already active at 22 locations in Europe - will further strengthen the leading market position of this activity. The acquisition will be consolidated as of 1 January 2013 and will directly contribute to the earnings per share and will be financed from existing credit facilities." www.themonty.com About the SECO/WARWICK Vacuum Team; The Vacuum Team offers vacuum heat treating furnaces for hardening, tempering, annealing, solution heat treating, brazing, sintering, carburizing, carbonitriding, high vacuum, CVD–graphitizing and degassing. The company operates plants throughout the Midwest and Southeast serving aerospace, automotive, military and commercial customers with both ferrous and non-ferrous facilities. Contact Alfe at 888.747.2533 or www.al-fe.com. " Heat Treating 2013. It's proving to be rather difficult to get a read on how the heat treating industry will fare in 2013. Economic forecasts have Asia doing well, Europe going to hell in a hand basket, the US either strengthening or falling over a fiscal cliff and Latin America with the exception of Brazil doing reasonably well. With forecasts being so uncertain we decided to look at two of the larger areas for heat treating, automotive and aerospace. Looking at the auto industry first we see that 2013 is expected to be a record breaker in terms of new vehicle production. January 15/2013 Automotive. "The cyclical recovery in global auto sales that began in mid-2009 should remain intact in the coming year, according to a new report from Scotiabank (TSX:BNS). The bank, in its Global Auto Report, said Thursday it expected worldwide auto sales to advance four per cent in 2013 after having seen average growth rates of seven per cent the previous three years , including a 13 per cent surge in the first year of the recovery. "Global www.themonty.com Alfe Heat Treating. Our friends at Alfe are certainly a generous bunch, over the past few years we have run across numerous instances of the company contributing to local causes. By the way when they say they are the largest aluminum heat treater in the US they are not understating the case, as a matter of fact they are certainly the largest in North America. January 16/2013 sales will be bolstered by strong employment growth in developing nations, record low interest rates and the recent acceleration in the pace of monetary expansion around the globe,'' said Carlos Gomes, Scotiabank senior economist and auto industry specialist." Europe. "Mass market European car makers lost an estimated €4- to €5-billion ($6.8-billion U.S.) in 2012 – losses that are unsustainable – Chrysler Group LLC chief executive officer Sergio Marchionne says. “There’s got to be a day of reckoning,” Mr. Marchionne told reporters Monday at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. “The machine is broken.” Some auto makers in Europe have slashed capacity as a result of the steep economic downturn that is battering vehicle sales in Europe, but more needs to be done, he said, comparing the crisis to the 2008 collapse of North American auto sales that led to Chrysler and General Motors Corp. tumbling into bankruptcy protection. Mr. Marchionne is also CEO of Fiat SpA, one of the auto makers that has closed plants and slashed jobs. Ford Motor Co., General Motors Co. and PSA Peugeot have also announced plant closings amid sales that have tumbled by double-digit percentages." USA. "The increase of 14 per cent in U.S. sales last year to 14.5 million vehicles has the industry in a positive mood as the North American International Auto Show opens in Detroit on Monday. Analysts are forecasting an even better year this year and a further improvement in 2014 and beyond. "We expect the SAAR [seasonally adjusted annual rate] to get back to and eventually surpass its prior peak level of 17 million units around 2015-16, as significant amounts of pent-up demand is unleashed," auto analysts from Wall Street firm Morgan Stanley said in a report last week. Such positive forecasts underpin the view that the Detroit Three will need to add factories later this decade." For a feel of the aerospace industry we looked no further than the world's largest aircraft builder Boeing who recently made this prediction about the aircraft business in 2013. Aerospace. "Boeing predicts a $104 billion (£65 billion) aircraft finance market in 2013, marking the first time the market has exceeded $100 billion, with plane sales rising around 9.5%. This total is up $9 billion from 2012's $95 billion. Boeing's commercial jetliner deliveries will for the first time exceed 600, if the company fulfills the year's remaining commitments, up from 477 during 2011. Airbus also hit record deliveries this year, with 462 to 76 customers by the end of October." To look at every industry that does a substantial amount of heat treating for a 2013 forecast is beyond this writer's time so we will revert to the time honored "Feeling in My Bones" theory (or FIB for short). Using the FIB theory we would suggest that 2013 will continue in the same vein as 2012 and prove to be a good one for most companies in the heat treating industry. And what do we base this upon? The incredible optimism we hear from captive and commercial heat treaters and the fact that this is backed up with substantial investments in new and upgraded equipment. While we asked a number of heat treaters for forecasts many were reluctant to have their comments in print. However Mr. Pawel Wyrzykowski, CEO of new furnace builder Seco Warwick sent us the comments below as did the President of a major US commercial heat treater in the US. www.themonty.com However this growth will be uneven around the world as it shown in the two reports below, one from Europe and one from the US. "From an end market standpoint at a macro level we see auto up slightly and all other industries down to flat, but building in the 2nd half of the year. The continued uncertainty in Washington does not help the industry." Wall Colmonoy/Brazing Seminar. "Take Part in the Only Hands-On Brazing Seminar! Preserving the tradition originated by the late Robert Peaslee, a brazing pioneer who invented the first nickel-based brazing filler metal, Wall Colmonoy offers an early spring session of Modern Furnace Brazing School on April 23-25 at Aerobraze Engineered Technologies’ Brazing Engineering Center. At this state-of-the-art facility in Cincinnati, Ohio, engineers, technicians, quality managers, production managers and others will experience “hands-on” applications and learn about brazing technology from leading industry experts. This three-day seminar offers knowledge and practical application about: · Brazing Design · Metallurgical Aspects / Brazing Operation · Brazing Atmosphere and Furnace Equipment · Brazing Material Selection and Applications · Quality Control Unlike other classroom-only seminars, Brazing School attendees will tour the facility and see the actual brazing application on the shop floor. They will also have the opportunity to apply different forms of filler metal to supplied samples, have them vacuum brazed and discuss the outcomes. Wall Colmonoy’s Leading Brazing Engineers, with a combined 48 years of experience providing practical solutions to brazing challenges, have the technical know-how to guide attendees through the brazing process from beginning to end production. The Modern Furnace Brazing School instructors are: · Lydia Lee, BSE, M. Eng, MBA, Director of Brazing Engineering, Alloy Products Group, USA · Bob Pfouts, BSME, Senior Engineer, Aerobraze Engineered Technologies, USA www.themonty.com "After having an excellent year 2012, with a significant growth of both : sales and profits we look positively at 2013. Although the economic environment is not very promising we expect again to buck the trend thanks to our innovative products and our new strategy and organization. We very much believe that many customers, for example in Germany, will recognize our furnace features which have enjoyed a lot of demand in the USA, Scandinavia and many other western European reputable companies in the past. To enhance our presence in Germany we recently acquired a German 30-person service company, now called Seco/Warwick Service GmbH. This, in combination with our cost saving and innovative furnaces should bring us some customer interest in the German speaking countries. Apart from this we will continue promoting our product solutions in our regular markets and we are quite confident that this trend will continue which is mainly based upon true customer satisfaction. There is no better reference than a repeat order from a reputable customer. The last factor makes us especially optimistic about our future." Mr. Pawel Wyrzykowski. January 15/2013 www.themonty.com Monday Morning Briefing. Lets start off in Washington state, USA where commercial heat treater Cascade Metallurgical Inc., In Kent, Washington is making a very large investment. Recently the company ordered a "tip-up" style furnace from furnace builder Kleenair. The gas fired furnace will have working dimensions of 21' long X 7' deep X 6' high, a capacity of 50,000 pounds, an operating temperature of up to 2150F and will be capable of a variety of processes including annealing. The unit is scheduled to be installed the first quarter of 2013. Cascade which recently received Nadcap accreditation is also installing additional batch IQ capacity. From Washington we move to Wisconsin where flowmeters specialists Atmosphere Engineering is moving into a new building. "Atmosphere Engineering is very proud to announce that they have moved to a new location in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The move is a genuine milestone for the company that was started over 10 years ago by Jason Jossart in a single room studio. Since then, the company has expanded their line of products to include a complete range of flow measurement and control instruments as well as many custom engineered process control solutions primarily designed for the thermal processing industry with installations around the world. Their new location is a modern 12,000sqft facility that includes a large amount of manufacturing area to better facilitate their current production requirements and meet the company's growth plans for the next 5-10 years." Up in Canada commercial heat treater Atlantic Heat Treating in Ajax, Ontario, is just about to add a fairly good sized 2 bar vacuum furnace and will be doubling the size of their plant. The company is owned by John Mathews who purchased the company probably 10 years ago and who has down a very good job of running it ever since. From Illinois we have this press release from furnace rebuilder Industrial Furnace Services Inc. To cut a long story short it was a good year. When looking at these figures please keep in mind that not all commercial heat treaters report to MTI (Bodycote being the largest exception) so total sales figures would be Inductotherm/Clinton Machine. Want to know who is the most successful company in the Americas when it comes to market share for a particular product family in the heat treating industry? Hands down Inductotherm Group. John was in charge of Quality with commercial heat treater Allied HT in Mississauga, Canada for a number of years but he had always dreamed of owning his own business. Well the dream came true and for several years now John has owned his own Home Inspection business which is quite a change. In late 2012 Chrysler announced that they would be opening a new transmission facility in Tipton, Indiana. When this plant was originally envisioned in 2008 plans by the owner at the time, Getrag included several vacuum carburizing lines from ALD so naturally many people have assumed that this would still be the case. While we don't know for sure we are starting to believe that heat treating will not be included in the new facility. And to close things out on a "light" note we have a couple of interesting photos below. Hightemp Furnaces in India is the largest commercial heat treater in the country and a very significant builder of new furnaces. Construction work is now underway on Keighley Laboratories’ new heat treatment processes building, at its West Yorkshire headquarters. After a detailed topographical survey, site clearance and levelling, the steelwork is now being erected and the building is due for completion in February, with the mechanical and electrical (M&E) services scheduled for completion by next summer. The site architects are 2H Architecture of Leeds, the main contractor is Triton Construction of Liversedge and the M&E services are being provided by Dualtec of Keighley. Representing a total capital investment in excess of £1 million, the purpose-built unit will house furnaces, controls and ancillary equipment for new and complimentary processes, augmenting Keighley Labs’ existing array of heat treatment services. “We are effectively in the first stage of moving forward again as a company, by making a sizeable investment in new facilities and positioning ourselves with some of the best resources in the industry,” says Keighley Labs MD, Debbie Mellor, who took time out from her busy schedule to be pictured at the controls of a site excavator. “In this new building, we shall have modern furnace equipment and the most sophisticated process controls, enabling us to regulate precisely the parameters to suit clients’ exact specifications. We shall offer a service that is secondto-none, from a single site at the heart of the engineering and aviation supply industry.” Adjacent to the existing induction hardening department and now sharing a common despatch yard, the new 5,000sq ft building is being clad in the same grey-blue coated steel wall and roofing sheets. Before construction could commence, 2H Architecture, supervised the initial enabling contract, which involved demolishing the previous maintenance building. “Given the heat output from the furnaces, we have taken these thermal installation requirements into account when designing the building envelope,” says 2H co-founder Brenden Harrison. “We are working to current building regulations for walls, flooring and roof plus 20%, to ensure optimum energy efficiency for the new building and reduce running costs.” The interior will accommodate the heat treatment furnaces, programmable controllers, degreasing equipment and post-process wash units, with a main side entrance to suit the proposed workflow. Keighley Labs anticipates that the markets that will be served by these new processes will include products such as gears, crankshafts, valve parts, camshafts, cylinders, railway braking systems, pump components and pipeline fittings. Fulltime positions will be created by the new heat treatment facility, together with several apprenticeship opportunities, adding to an existing headcount of 65 personnel. "SOLAR ATMOSPHERES OF WESTERN PA WELCOMES NEW REGIONAL SALES MANAGER. Solar Atmospheres of Western PA (SAWPA) has named John (Jack) Giacobbi as www.themonty.com Gasbarre Products/Major Gauge & Tool. When we think of Gasbarre we think of their furnace group which consists of Sinterite, CI Hayes and JL Becker all well known names in the furnace industry in North America. What we didn't realize was how large the company was in total. This press release tells you about an acquisition the group just made and what the group consists of. January 10/2013 Lake City Heat Treating/Warsaw, Indiana. Family owned commercial heat treater Lake City in Warsaw, Indiana recently added another VFS 24" X 36" X 24" vacuum furnace which brings their total number of vacuum furnaces up to 6. What makes Lake City quite unique amongst commercial heat treaters is that they also offer Hot Isostatic Pressing (Hipping to you and I) a very top end heat treat process only offered by a handful of commercial heat treats. Far and away the largest for this process is Bodycote which dominates the market around the world. January 9/2013 Memorable Events of 2012. In our opinion the 10 items below (in no particular order) are the most memorable of 2012 in the worldwide heat treating industry. January 8/2013 Bodycote Acquisitions. International commercial heat treater UK based Bodycote acquired a total of 17 new facilities in North America which would be the most ever since the acquisition of Lindberg almost 10 years ago now. Natural Gas Pricing. "Fracking" has changed the energy world and both natural gas and oil production in North America continue to climb as prices drop. North America now has some of the lowest natural gas prices in the world which gives North American heat treaters an advantage over all competitors. The significance of this can't be overstated. Ipsen Titan Furnaces. New furnace builder Ipsen's line of "Titan" vacuum furnaces has attracted both criticism and praise but with the company recently celebrating their 100th unit sold it is obvious that this was a real coup for the company and a tremendous marketing success. Changing Markets. While Asia continues to grow North America is seeing a dramatic shift in manufacturing from Canada and the northern US to the southern US and Mexico because of lower costs. This trend will continue and accelerate. Bet on it. Resurgence of Batch IQ Furnaces. Just when you thought that small and medium sized batch IQ furnaces would finally go the way of the dinosaur the world changes and they are now more popular than ever because of their versatility. Their growth continues. www.themonty.com their new Regional Sales Manager. Mr. Giacobbi will manage established accounts and develop new business in the Mid-West U.S. territory. He previously held a position with similar responsibilities as an account manager at Bodycote in Rochester, NY. "Jack’s comprehensive understanding of heat treating sales and processing will help us connect with new customers and improve our client service. As an award-winning sales person with a proven track record, we are confident that Jack will make a valuable contribution to our continued success.”Mr. Giacobbi holds a BA in Business Administration from Columbia College." January 9/2013 Pit Carburizing.Commercial heat treater and gear manufacturer "Reese" in Germany certainly pushed the envelope by installing the world's largest pit carburizing installation with working dimensions of 200" X 200" at a cost of over $20 million USD. Watch for further expansion of large pit furnaces specifically designed for gears. Boeing 787 Dreamliner. The long delayed launch of the Boeing 787 "Dreamliner" brought joy and relief to many a captive and commercial heat treater and based upon orders booked this will continue. KAMAZ/Russia. In 2012 we learned that the largest heat treat installation in the world was not in the US, Germany, China or India but rather Russia. With 32 pusher lines and row upon row of other types of furnaces this is the largest heat treat installation in the world. New Technologies. Two new technologies are in our opinion well worth watching, "Catalytic Gas Nitriding" (CGN) from "Nakal" in Russia and the "Expanite" process from "Seco Warwick" for hardening of stainless steels. We predict both will prove to be very worthwhile. WALL COLMONOY Ltd (UK) Announces New Appointments. January 8/2013 "Mark Harrison joins Wall Colmonoy Ltd (UK) as Continuous Improvement Manager. Since then the almost completed plant has sat empty however in an announcement just before Christmas Chrysler said it would install new equipment by mid 2013 and hire 1350 people for an opening in late 2014. This would presumably mean installing an in house heat treating department but whether the selection will again be ALDHolcroft is unknown. In related news Chrysler has also announced they will be hiring 500 more workers at their Kokomo, Indiana transmission plant which is one of the large captive heat treaters in North America. While we are not yet in a position to provide details we can with certainty say that there will be a new commercial heat treater in Texas up and running within a month. Grace Manufacturing in Russellville, AR, USA a supplier of precision metal parts recently installed a brand new TM vacuum furnace. Tom Arnold, Manager of Engineering at Metcut Research Inc. a materials engineering and testing organization with two locations in the US and one in France recently retired after 44 years with the company. Prashant Dusane of new furnace builder Aichelin Unitherm in India recently left the company. "Our Midwestern customers will benefit from Mike's expertise in hardening and heat treating processes," said Chip Laskowski, GH IA's Director of Sales. "He will help us accelerate our growth in the automotive parts manufacturing market." Mike can be reached at mmaiorino@gh-ia.com "Heat Treated Aircraft Parts; There is confusion in the heat treating industry, when it comes to heat treating aerospace parts. The aerospace specifications refer to AMS (Aerospace Metals Society of SAE). The specification of choice by many aerospace manufacturers is AMS 2759, and covers the Heat Treatment of Steel Parts. If you are heat treating parts to AMS 2759 your pyrometry must then be in accordance with the stringent AMS 2750 spec to insure proper processing. Now, there is a third party auditing firm that looks at your facility from the inside out. That accreditation firm is PRI. They are in charge of the evaluation and issuance of the Nadcap (National Aerospace and Defense Contractors Accreditation Program) certificates. There are many heat treat shops that are advertising that they heat treat IAW (In Accordance With) with certain AMS specifications. There is a big difference here. If that Heat Treat shop is able to coerce a "cognizant engineer" from their customer to sign off they follow the protocols of AMS specifications by the letter of the specification, they are allowed to proceed to heat treat aerospace parts. Many times a "cognizant engineer" could be a purchasing manager who may not know heat treating. These shops are thus never audited and do not own the appropriate Nadcap certification. The question to be answered by these "IAW" shops: "Who is verifying your equipment, personnel and quality systems are compliant?" As much as we dislike the cost of Nadcap plus the stress after Nadcap findings are labored, we are a better company on completion. Nadcap and AS9100 ( the quality system audit) result in continuous improvements. These are not to be feared, they should be welcomed. After all, we (or our loved ones) are all flying on airplanes with heat treated parts. Boeing Aircraft has been one to insure all D1-4426 processors must be Nadcap accredited and AS9100 certified. No grandfathering is allowed. It is our opinion other primes need to follow Boeing's lead! Robert Hill, President, Solar Atmospheres of Western Pa., Inc., Hermitage Pa. bobh@solarwpa.com" Bodycote Share Prices. 2012 was quite a year for the world's largest commercial heat treater UK based Bodycote. Some of the highlights include the acquisition of the 7 Metal Improvement locations in the US in April, a new surface technology location in Houston, Texas in April, a new heat treat plant in France in July, the October acquisition of the CCHT plants owned by Bluewater Thermal giving the company a strong presence in the US Southeast and the acquisition of Specialty Heat Treating with their 3 plants in Michigan and Indiana just before the end of the year. And what do the markets think of all this activity? As you can see from the 3 month graph below the markets love the activity. Even keeping in mind that the resolution or to be more fair non resolution of the bogus US "fiscal cliff" situation provided a significant lift to many stocks around the world Bodycote shares have www.themonty.com Nadcap. While it would be extremely difficult to find a heat treater who is not familiar with Nadcap a brief summary is in order. Developed a number of years ago by the aerospace industry it is basically a quality standard. While I and most heat treaters would agree that it is a necessary and thorough standard and crucial to the aerospace industry critics have for years argued that it not uniformly applied, a viewpoint which is summed up by Mr. Bob Hill of Solar Atmospheres. January 7/2013 still seen very strong growth. As the company is such a good indicator of the health of manufacturing around the world we would consider this to be excellent news for the heat treating industry and we hope it continues. (Note; this author does have a small holding of Bodycote shares). January 4/2013 An energy technology customer had the opportunity to earn business, but the existing facility was at capacity. With need pressing, Ipsen quoted the TITAN furnace, hosted the customer for ordering, and shipped the furnace out all within three weeks. By choosing TITAN, this customer will be able to begin filling orders immediately at the start of the new year. Similarly, an Ipsen H2 2-bar TITAN shipment left the Cherry Valley facility on a Friday and arrived at an international Aerospace company’s facility in the southeastern U.S. on that following Monday, keeping the customer up and running smoothly. Stories like these are what make the TITAN experience so unique. The idea that drives the TITAN experience is providing customers a quality product quickly. It is opening doors to convenient heat treatment options that may have been closed in the past. TITAN caters to project needs by offering various sizes and configurations with long-lasting equipment and powerful technology, all within a small footprint. TITAN models can also be fitted with a number of options to increase its capabilities, making it a versatile furnace that can be used by a number of different industries for a number of different applications." Bluewater Thermal Solutions/Southwest Heat Treat & Texas Energy Labs. The largest US based commercial heat treater Bluewater Thermal Solutions has announced that they are expanding into the booming Texas commercial heat treating industry. Knowing Bluewater I would assume that are prepared to make a major investment in this area and aggressively expand their presence in Texas. You will notice the quotes attributed to Mike Wellham of Bluewater in the press release, Mike is the fellow in the center of the picture below taken a couple of years ago. January 3/2013 "Bluewater Thermal Solutions Acquires Southwest Heat Treat and Texas Energy Labs in Houston, TX. Shortly before Christmas we profiled Bodycote's (commercial heat treating) facility in Melrose Park, Illinois-the company's largest facility in North America. At the time we mentioned how part of their philosophy is intensive employee training. As part of this program SSI (furnace controls) and Atmosphere Engineering (flow meters) recently completed a training class at this location. Bob Fincken National Sales Manger for SSI sent us the photo below. The individuals in the photo are Subhash Kans, Vinod Walimbe, Jerry Li, Tiger Jin, Facundo Cruz and Dan Dewberry. January 3/2013 KAMAZ/ Nizhnekamsk, Russia. To start off 2013 let’s have a look at what we would consider the largest heat treat under one roof in the world either captive or commercial. KAMAZ in Russia has a heat treat department which consists of 32 Holcroft pusher furnaces (the one photo below shows 18 of the Holcroft pushers), three Lindberg batch lines, an Ipsen batch line consisting of two batch IQ furnaces and associated equipment, an Aichelin pusher line, at least 15 batch IQ lines from various suppliers, 8-10 pit carburizing furnaces, 3 pit plasma nitriders and 5 pit nitriders. So all told this one plant has 33 pusher lines, 26 or more batch IQ furnaces, 10 pit furnaces just for carburizing and a long list of related and www.themonty.com Bodycote/Specialty Heat Treating. And speaking of acquisitions we have heard that international heat treater Bodycote acquired Specialty Heat Treating based in Grand Rapids, Michigan, USA in a deal concluded New Year's Eve. We're certain that Bodycote needs no introduction but Specialty might. The company which is owned by the Dean Smith family is based in Grand Rapids (MI) with plants also in Elkhart (IN) and Holland (MI) and specializes in both LPC and vacuum oil quench and has many precision component customers in three camps: automotive, heavy truck, and aerospace. Having visited these locations I can attest to the fact that this is a quality heat treater and that the company will make a fine addition to Bodycote. This marks the third large acquisition for Bodycote in North America in less than a year the others being the CCHT division of Bluewater and Metal Improvement Company. All told (if our math is correct) this will mean the the company has added 17 plants in North America which makes you wonder where it will end. The file photos below show two of Specialties' plants.
