MARRIAGE
EQUALITY LEAPS
FORWARD IN
AUSTRALIA
By Peter Gray
The fight for same-sex marriage has seen it’s biggest victory move yet
with Private Member Bills being introduced into parliament. Stephen
Jones (ALP), Adam Brandt (Greens) and Andrew Wilkie (Independent)
have all taken a stance on marriage equality which has placed increasing
pressure on Opposition Leader Tony Abbott to allow a full conscience
vote for Coalition members.
Abbott has continued to state his views on marriage but the introduction
of these Bills will hopefully highlight to the House of Representatives that
he can no longer be the whole voice for the Coalition on the subject of gay
marriage with a number of his team pushing for their own say. Whilst the
shadow cabinet will be bound by the Coalition policy that was taken to the
last two polls to not amend the Marriage Act, Opposition backbenchers
will be free to support the same-sex marriage legislation when it comes to
parliament later in the year. Those backbenchers that do vote for marriage
equality will be seen as having exercising a right traditionally granted to
Liberal MPs rather than having crossed the floor and defied their leader.
The two bills introduced into parliament, one from Jones and the other
co-sponsored by Brandt and Wilkie, are also playing in favour of marriage
equality as both include provisions making it clear that churches will not
have to marry same-sex couples if they don’t feel comfortable to do so.
A recent poll showed that 62% of Australians are in favour of marriage
equality with a further 11% more likely to support reform if the churches
are free to refuse same-sex marriages. The poll also revealed that 81% of
people in favour were aged 18-24 with 51% of those in the 50-64 age range.
With the bills being introduced, as well as a third from Greens senator
Sarah Hanson-Young being seen by a Senate committee, the staggering
poll results, and Abbott’s acceptance of backbenchers having a conscience
vote on the issue, 2012 does appear to be a year we could make history.
MAGDA SZUBANSKI
COMES OUT ON
VALENTINE’S DAY
“It’s so recent that
things have changed...
It’s only in the last
four years that we’ve
had anything like the
same sort of rights
with civil unions.
There’s a kind of velvet
oppression going on,
where people think it’s
fine for gay people.
Young gay people are
killing themselves, it’s
not fine. It’s a serious
issue.”
By Jordan Hirst
Australian comedy icon and film
and TV star Magda Szubanski
wrapped up a whirlwind day of media
coverage on Valentine’s Day by
coming out as gay on Network Ten’s
The Project.
“I absolutely identify as gay, and for a
very long time have,” Magda said on
the program, before adding that her
family and friends have known for a
long time.
Magda became emotional when
explaining the challenges that gay
people face, and the continual
progress of gay rights.
“It must be hard for people who don’t
experience what it’s like to know what
the pressures of being gay are,” she
explained. “You’re forced into this
position when you feel like you have
to choose, and you just want to give
of yourself.”
The morning before her appearance
on the show, Magda hinted at her
sexuality in a statement to the media
confirming she was “1000%” in favour
of marriage reform.
“We pay taxes, fight wars for this
country, nurse you when you are sick,
make you laugh, sing and dance for
you, play netball for you, star in your
movies, cook your meals, decorate
your store windows and chances
are gay people designed whatever
it is you’re wearing,” she said in the
statement.
“The [marriage] law as it stands
means that you could be a serial killer
and have killed all of your spouses
and yet you would still be considered
fit to marry. But if you are gay, then
you are not deemed to be worthy of
these same rights. The law is unfair
and it needs to be changed to reflect
the wonderful, tolerant, live-and-letlive society Australians have created.”
ALP SACKS
HOMOPHOBIC
CANDIDATE
By Toby Longhurst
The Australian Labor Party has quickly expelled a
teenage candidate who was to stand for the seat
of Southern Downs at the Queensland election
after it emerged that he had posted a number of
homophobic blogs.
Peter Watson, 19, initially denied being the author of
the posts which linked homosexuality to paedophilia
but changed his story a day later telling ABC radio that
he indeed wrote the posts and that he stood by his
comments.
“I said that homosexuality and paedophilia were
linked because there’s been some research done ...
and it’s been published by the Catholic Church, that
suggests that 30 per cent of male paedophiles are
homosexual,” Mr Watson said. “I made the comments
so I do agree.”
Mr Watson’s views came to light when the Courier
Mail exposed a number of online rants posted by the
aspiring politician.
“Homosexuality and paedophilia go hand in hand with
each other,” Watson posted. “To deal with one you
must deal with the other in order to wipe them from
society.”
The ALP acted quickly to remove Watson and by all reports left Premier Anna Bligh
furious.
“The views of this man have no place in the ALP. Frankly they are despicable and they
have no place in the Australian community,” Ms Bligh said. “That’s why when these views
became known to the party. He was asked to resign and this morning he was expelled.
Minister for Communities Karen Struthers was also quick to point out the difference
between the action taken by the Labor Party and the inaction of Campbell Newman and the
LNP after their Cairns candiadate Gavin King suggested that women who are rape victims
were partly to blame for their fate if they were drunk at the time.
“Campbell Newman’s inaction stands in stark contrast to the ALP quick action to
disendorse former Southern Downs Candidate Peter Watson,” Struthers said. “If Campbell
Newman doesn’t have the courage to sack Gavin King, I urge all LNP candidates to do the
right thing and call for Mr King to be dumped.’’
Newman is on the record as saying he will not sack King “because he’s a terrific bloke,
he’s a family man”.

WORLD
BRIEFS
By Suzanne Gaskell
SWEDEN – LESBIAN TRUCK DRIVER TWEETS FOR A NATION
To boost the number of its
followers, the Swedish tourist
board ‘VisitSweden’ has
decided to give its @Sweden
Twitter feed to a different
Swedish citizen for seven days at a time. This
week it’s been the turn of Hanna, “just your average
lesbian truck driver” who has been sharing her
thoughts on life, politics, love and the weather
whilst driving her 40-tonne lorry to Denmark and
The Netherlands. So far the prestigious spot has
been filled by advertising executive, an organic
sheep farmer and a female priest to name but a
few. The campaign has been a great success, with
the number of followers doubling in the last 5 weeks
alone.
UK – LGBT ADOPTION AND FOSTERING WEEK
NRL
REF
COMES OUT!
By Natalie Brown
High profile NRL referee Matt Cecchin came out publicly
last week, after six years of keeping his sexuality known
only to his colleagues, friends and family. His courageous
move has made history, as the first NRL official to have
gone public, and he told the press he has had nothing but
support from his sporting cohort.
Cecchin says his inspiration came from former Cowboys
player Ian Roberts, who came out in 1995; and his book
‘Finding Out’, which gave him the courage to tell his family
and friends. “I played sport, I loved rugby league, I liked
going to the pub with my mates. It wasn’t until I read Ian’s
book that I started to tick a few boxes,” Checchin was
quoted in the Daily Telegraph.
Three LGBTI radio programs on 4ZZZ are throwing their support behind
fundraising for a new transmitter at the station. Dykes on Mykes, Queer
Radio and Gay Savvy have clubbed together to run Ignite Your Gay Mission
on Saturday March 3 from midday at the Wickham Hotel.
It’s only a gold coin donation to get in with proceeds going to Transmission
Ignition – the campaign to raise $50,000 for the new transmitter. The old
transmitter is still run on valves and isn’t going to last much longer. Let’s face
it, without a transmitter the six hours of queer content won’t go to air each
week.
Kristy Apps, Something Whiskey, DJ Frankie Trouble, Eleanor Jackson and
others are providing a great line-up of live music, dance tracks and even
performance poetry. There will also be a sausage sizzle and prizes.
“Ignite Your Gay Mission is a great event because it includes all elements of
4ZZZ through being radically independent, showcasing local queer artists and
supporting diversity on the airwaves,” explains Wickham Hotel Manager &
Dykes on Mykes host Ruth Gardiner.
“Dykes on Mykes and Queer Radio have been permanent fixtures every
Wednesday night on 4ZZZ for a couple of decades now,” says Queer Radio
presenter Mark Jeffery. “And Gay Savvy joined the stable of LGBTI programs
on Zed Digital when it launched last year.
“All of the shows have a great role reaching people who don’t get out to queer
pubs or clubs. Young people in particular find the programs a great support.”
Every Wednesday you can hear Dykes on Mykes from 7pm to 9pm and Queer
Radio 9pm to 11pm on 102.1FM, www.4zzzfm.org.au or via iPhone apps.
Gay Savvy airs every Thursday 8pm to 10pm on Zed Digital.
Ignite Your Gay Mission is on Saturday March 3 at the Wickham Hotel, 12pm
to 5pm. Donate online to Transmission Ignition at www.4zzzfm.org.au to
keep the air queer.
ICELAND – GAY TOURISM MONTH UNVEILED
ISRAEL – ANTI-DISCRIMINATION LAW CONSIDERED
Israeli ministers are set to
vote on a new bill to outlaw
discrimination on the basis of
sexual orientation. Whilst the
country already has an antidiscrimination employment
law, the new ruling would offer legal protection
across all areas of daily life. The changes have
been proposed by Nitzan Horowitz, an ex-journalist
and member of the Meretz Party, who is himself
gay. Horowitz was also previously responsible for
proposing amendments to the marriage law, stating
that unions should be allowed between two partners
regardless of their ethnic background, religion or
gender.
In a career spanning 20 years, Cecchin has forged a
respected career within the NRL community. He says he
is not concerned about sledging from the crowd. “The
odd comment might come from the hill now maybe, but
I’ve been called every name under the sun from there
anyway…”
IGNITE YOUR GAY MISSION
The UK is to hold its first
ever national Lesbian, Gay,
Bisexual and Transgender
Adoption and Fostering
Week from 20th – 26th
February. The event, organised by the charity ‘New
Family Social’, will be held in Worcester and has
already gained the support of social services in the
area. The campaign comes after a recent UK survey
showed that LGBT foster parents and adopters had
significant positive skills and experience to offer
young people. It is hoped that the prospective
carers and parents from the gay community will be
able to attend and receive information about helping
children in need to start new lives.
In a bid to boost tourism
during the quiet month
of February, Iceland has
embraced a new festival
aimed at the LGBT
community. The first
‘Rainbow Reykjavik’ event will take place this month
and will offer the chance to experience Icelandic
thrills such as glacier walking, snowmobile driving
and caving as well as more leisurely pursuits such
as visiting hot springs and the Blue Lagoon. With
gay equality fully supported by the law, there’s even
an option to get married whilst on your trip! In the interest of his son who was still at school
completing his HSC, he waited to share his news with

world of difference to him.”
PROPOSITION 8 RULED
“UNCONSTITUTIONAL”
By Bonnie Gardiner
Marriage Equality is in sight once
again for Californians after a ban on
same-sex marriage has been declared
unconstitutional.
Proposition 8 was voted into law in
2008 and established in the California
Constitution that marriage is the union
between one man and one woman, only
5 months after same-sex marriage had
first been legalised in the state. However,
further momentum was on the side
of marriage equality when the United
States Court of Appeals for the Ninth
Circuit recently ruled that proposition 8 is
unconstitutional.
“Proposition 8 serves no purpose, and
has no effect, other than to lessen the
status and dignity of gays and lesbians in
California, and to officially reclassify their
relationships and families as inferior to
those of opposite-sex couples,” the ruling
states. “The Constitution simply does not
allow for ‘laws of this sort.’”
The decision came in a 2-1 majority and
of course the issue is now expected to go
to the US Supreme Court as Supporters
of Proposition 8 may appeal the Ninth
Circuit’s ruling. The court has issued a
stay which means same-sex marriages
cannot be performed in California until
the appeals process is finished.
issue 293
Currently seven states in the
US have legalised same-sex
marriage. California, as the
nation’s most populous state
and home to more than 98,000
same-sex couples, would be the
gay rights movement’s biggest
prize of them all.

GAY SKI
‘ZEM CRAZY
WEEK
RUSSIANS
ANNOUNCED!
By Natalie Brown
Australia has finally come of age and we
now have our very own Gay Ski Week that
will be held during peak season at one of
Australia’s best ski resorts, Thredbo. This
inaugural week has already started to sell.
Gay Ski Week will cater to both avid ski
bunnies, those hot guys and gals who wear
their ever so tight thermals as well as those
who are less snow capable.
Thredbo Village in the Kosciusko National
park has an abundance of nightlife, plus
many places to indulge your body and
senses. QNews is proud to be a part of this
event and together with Sara Birtwhislte
from Travel Managers we have sought
the best and friendliest accommodation
available right in the heart of Australia’s
premier resort. The package deal allows
people to travel at a very affordable rate plus
have some fun together as well as space to
explore Australia’s winter wonderland.
Sensibly this Ski Week is flexible and caters to those that just want to throw a snow ball or two,
toboggan around a bit, ski on the learners slopes and get their balance or those crazy powder snow
hounds that want to ski the black runs and run amock pushing boundaries. The basic package
includes airfares from Brisbane plus transfers to and from the mountain. The best part about
Thredbo is there is so much to do and you don’t have to travel up and down a mountain in a bus
every day, because you are living the dream.
Sara has organised some very affordable prices that include airfares. Advice has also been taken
from Canada’s Whistler Gay Ski Week which is probably the largest of it’s kind in the world. Who
knows we may even find our own Gay Ski Team to compete overseas? Throw in some night time
entertainment, some causal group events plus plenty of time to explore and this is set to be an
exciting week. Numbers are limited for early bird prices and as it sells out it will rise due to airline
prices rising, so phone Sara for all the information.
Gay Ski Week is a 5 day event from Sunday August 19th 2012. Sara can be contacted weekdays
on 1300 689 461

If flying a Russian airline didn’t sound sketchy enough already, we
now have another reason to avoid the experience. News has hit the
press that Russian airline Aeroflot has forced a gay flight attendant
to enter into a sham marriage with a woman, just to keep his job!
According to Gay Russia, after he vocalised his intention to form a
group to fight for the rights of gay employees, 25 year old Maxim
Kupreev was given an ultimatum - enter into a heterosexual
marriage or lose his job. So at the end of last year he entered into
a marriage with his school friend, Sofia Mikhailova. Bizarrely,
previous to the incident, Mikhailova was already married to Grigoriy
Andreykin, with the marriage between the two needing to be
dissolved before her marriage to Kupreev could take place. As an
incentive, she was given a few privileges with the airline, which
include the opportunity to have discounted airfares. Apparently the
‘deal’ has worked out well for the couple, with him keeping his job
and his ‘wife’ who lives in Siberia, able to fly cheaply to Moscow
now.
LGBT activists have called for a boycott of the airline in defence of
its LGBT employees. Moscow Pride held its first rally on February 9,
in an attempt to draw attention to the situation, which it hopes will
put pressure on the international commercial airline alliance, Sky
Team, to drop Aeroflot. The Sky Team alliance includes Air France,
AlitaliaKM and Delta.

MADONNA + GAGA!

GLAMBERT’S NO QUEEN
By Peter Gray
Adam Lambert may have made the leap from reality TV contestant to full-fledged pop
superstar, but moving on to fronting Queen is one gig not on the cards. A report in the
UK claimed the openly gay singer, best known for his hit ‘Whataya Want From Me’, was
in line to fill the shoes of the late Freddie Mercury after he was misquoted.
The rumours were not completely baseless though as there are plans for Lambert to join
the remaining members of Queen, guitarist Brian May and drummer Roger Taylor, for a
series of dates following a show at the Sonisphere Festival in July in the UK, however
the former Idol singer had to clarify the situation when it started spreading that he was
permanently fronting the group.
““The intention is to pay tribute to Freddie and the band by singing some f***ing great
songs,” Lambert was quoted as telling the tabloid, continuing “It’s to keep the music alive
for the fans and give it an energy that Freddie would have been proud of.”
Queen’s record label, Hollywood Records, contained the fire by releasing a statement
which confirmed that there has been no official deal made with Lambert and that it is
something that may happen for the Sonisphere Festival. If it were to go ahead Queen
would be returning to the very spot they played their last concert with Mercury as their
frontman.
As for Lambert he’s got his work cut out for him, Queen gig or not, with his new album,
‘Trespassing’ due in March.
This year, Australian pop lovers will be left sneezing glitter and spewing
rainbows after not one, but TWO of the world’s hottest artists donning our
shores in 2012-2013.
Prepare for the awesome that is Madonna (omg!) and Lady Gaga (OMG!) who will
provide the perfect combination of pop royalty, gay pride and an ultimate party
setting.
After her recent record breaking half time show for the Super bowl, Madge will
trot around the globe in support of her 12th studio album MDNA, to be released
on March 26. Clearly saving the best for last, 53 year old Madonna will give us ‘all
her luvin’ when wrapping up her 90-day world tour with us in early 2013, after not
venturing down under for almost 20 years, making her practically ‘like a virgin!’
The Grammy award winner is boasting expensive tickets that are worth every
penny.
“Start saving,” she told the Los Angeles Times. “Work all year, scrape the money
together, and come to my show. I’m worth it.”
A day after Madonna revealed she would embark on her tour to Oz, the most
talked-about pop musician in all of Christendom, Lady Gaga, has announced dates
for the Australian leg of her own global tour. Her concert is set to feature a gothic
castle setting as well as a fan-friendly section she has called The Monster Pit for
hard-core fans that may get selected by the Haus of Gaga to meet the star herself.
These two mega stars taking on
Australia head to head is creating
a pop heavyweight championship
the likes of which Australia has
never seen. Who is the REAL
queen of pop, and whose show
will blow the others out of the
water - the ultimate Material Girl,
or the girl who would substitute
Material for Meat? One thing’s
for sure, two massive nights of
excessive laser flashing, crazy
dancing, costume changing; glitter
raining will certainly make up
two of the biggest party nights of
2012-2013.

news for the girls
THE ART OF
MEETING
WOMEN
We all know how hard it can be to find that someone special.
Where do you even begin? How do you approach someone that
you’re interested in? Most of us fear rejection and it can be a pretty
daunting experience to approach someone that we are attracted
to. Unfortunately there is no set rules that are guaranteed to work there’s no golden pick up line. The good news however is that there
a few tips that you can follow that can help you meet other women
when you’re out and about.
They may be just a few simple tips, but we hope that by taking a couple
on board that you might just meet the girl of your dreams.
1. If you see someone who
is interesting, go over to her
and strike up a conversation.
The easiest thing to do is to
compliment her on something. “I
really like your hair. Who cuts it?”
or “Those are great shoes, where
did you get them?” End with an
open-ended question, so she has
to engage with you.
2. Don’t just go up and offer to
buy her a drink. Find something
to talk about: the pool game, the
band that’s playing or last night’s
episode of The L Word.
3. Make eye contact and smile.
Try to seem confident, even if you
aren’t. Women respond to that.
4. Be friendly and courteous. Even
if you and she don’t hit it off, she
could have a friend that you like.
5. Pay attention to how she reacts
and respond accordingly. If you’re
sensing she’s interested, try
flirting a little. Tell her she has
beautiful eyes or she’s a good
dancer.
6. Don’t be too pushy. After talking
for a while, introduce yourself, say
it was nice meeting her and excuse
yourself and walk away. See if she
approaches you later. Or you can
return later to ask her to dance or
say you enjoyed talking to her and
would like her phone number.
7. Try to find something that you
have that she wants- information
about tickets to a sold out show,
the name of that new self-help
book, an extra car phone charger
that just happens to fit her phoneand get her number so you can
call her about it later.
8. Have a wing woman -- a friend
who comes to the bar with you
to boost your confidence and to
check in with after you talk to
someone.
9. Congratulate yourself. No
matter what the outcome, you
took a risk and put yourself out
there. Have a drink or a dance to
celebrate.
10. Be yourself. It may sound
obvious but people know when
you’re full of it. Don’t try to impress
her with something about yourself
that isn’t true, sooner or later it will
make you look silly.

Ellen Hits
Back at the
Haters
By Natalie Brown
Amidst a backlash from homophobic
mums who called for her to be dropped
as the face of American department store
JC Penney, Ellen DeGeneres has stood
tall and hit back at the haters. “For those
of you who are just tuning in for the first
time, it’s true. I’m gay. I hope you were
sitting down.”
Ellen responded to the conservative
women’s group One Million Mums
who have called for JC Penney to drop
the gregarious talk show host, but the
department store is standing by their
woman.
In a recent major makeover of the brand
to make it groovier and more appealing to
hipper shoppers, the chain hired DeGeneres
as their new spokesperson. Apparently the
mum group accused JC Penney of jumping
on the ‘pro-gay bandwagon’ but Ellen has
hit back, telling them that being gay isn’t
a ‘bandwagon’ and questioned how much
support there is for One Million Mums
views.
“I’m proud and happy to say that JC
Penney stuck by their decision to make me
their spokesperson, which is great news
for me because I also need some new crew
socks. I’m really going to clean up with this
discount.”
Perhaps the One Million Mums who
complained about the talk show hosts new
position just aren’t hip enough to swing
with the new groove of JC Penney…

PATHOLOGISING OF
TRANS WOMEN
By Paul Martin
Whilst there are many trans people
living wonderful lives, there are
many others who are psychologically
damaged. Knowing you are the wrong
gender can’t cause psychological
harm. One thing that does lead to
damage however, is the levels of
transphobia in society. Another
unlikely source of harm is the lack of
understanding that has unfortunately
been a part of the history of
psychology and psychiatry.
In the past, some people in these
professions have pathologised trans
people and forced them to present in
a stereotyped way in order to access
the treatments necessary to transition.
Theories that are incorrect include the
idea that trans women who are attracted
to males are actually gay men who want
to transition to seduce heterosexual
men, or that it is due to psychological
damage done at an early age. These
beliefs have led to many gender diverse
people becoming emotionally damaged
as they keep looking for what is wrong
with them rather than moving towards
self-acceptance. Luckily things have
changed and there are psychiatrists
and psychologists who have a solid
understanding of the reality of what it
means to be trans.
Gender diversity has always existed
and always will in every culture around
the world and is a wonderful aspect
of the richness of what it means to be
human. Those who overcome their
fears and start the challenging and
rewarding journey of transitioning have
to face difficulties that many people
couldn’t even imagine. Those who
psychologically make it through these
challenges in one piece often end up
incredibly strong, caring and passionate
with amazing perspectives on life that
come from having lived as both male
and female. I’m proud to be part of a
psychology practice that educates other
professionals about this area and we
have had the privilege of working with
countless people in supporting them to
do whatever is necessary to become
who they really are.

JOSEPHINE...
By Dr Fiona Bisshop
Headache is one of the commonest reasons
people come to the doctor. There’s no
doubt that a bad headache can be very
disabling and distressing. Most headaches
are short-lived and relatively harmless, but
occasionally a headache can be a sign of a
life-threatening illness.
The commonest type of headache is the
tension headache, thought to
be caused by spasm of the
muscles on your scalp. This
can be brought on by physical
or emotional stress, or poor
posture especially from sitting
in front of a computer. These
headaches tend to build up
gradually, starting from the
back of the head, and is often
described as tightness or
pressure. They can come and
go for days on end. Treatment
is paracetamol, aspirin or
ibuprofen, and sometimes neck
massage can be helpful.
The next most common cause is migraine.
True migraines are headaches of sudden
onset, often one-sided, and they often have
an aura, which is a set of warning signs that
a migraine is coming - these include strange
visual disturbance such as flashing lights in
I’VE GOT A HEADACHE
a zigzag pattern, strange tastes and smells.
Over the counter medications are less likely
to work for migraines and you might need a
prescription drug to manage them. Migraines
can be triggered by various things - chocolate,
alcohol, sleep disturbance or caffeine.
There are many other causes of headache,
including caffeine withdrawal, but it’s
important to know when your headache could
be a sign of something more sinister.
A headache that gets worse when
you lie down and that wakes
you every morning, especially if
it’s accompanied by personality
change or irritability, could be a
sign of a brain tumour (or it could
just be a sinus infection!).
A sudden headache like a
thunderclap in your head could
be a warning of an imminent
brain haemorrhage and you
should get to a doctor quickly if
you experience this.
Headache with fever and neck stiffness could
be meningitis.
If you’re having trouble with headaches, your
doctor will know what questions to ask to
work out the cause and the treatment, so don’t

DOING YOUR
When you listen to athletes you will often hear them
referring to their PB (or personal best). A bit like a
BFF – a PB can help you achieve amazing results....
here’s how
PB!
healthy living
Measuring Your Personal Best
To see how you are going you need something to
compare to. By measuring or timing your performance
it gives you a line in the sand. It is the measurement of
your best performance to date and from there you will
either improve or not. Simple – huh! Well actually, not
really. Just like in weight loss, having a PB can be a
psychological mine field. What it does do is give you an
unequivocal point of comparison.
Recording Your PB
Depending on what your sport or activity of choice
is will determine how, or how often you record your
performance. Swimmers who participate in Masters
Swim Carnivals automatically have their times recorded
in a database that electronically allows you to track
performance. Other Masters sports like track and
field also allow you to do this. For runners you may
need to do this manually or obtain a sports watch that
automatically tracks your time and distance and can
often be downloaded to a computer. For those who can’t
be bothered with technology – an excel spreadsheet or
notepad can achieve much the same result.
PBs for Motivation
Smashing Your PB
The great part about a PB is that it moves – so when
you improve it – that is your new PB! Where it is helpful
is in trend analysis – how you are performing over time.
By keeping a record of your performance you get to
see how things are panning out. It can also be helpful if
you are competing in events as it may indicate what the
best times of day are for you, or what different training
intensities do to your overall performance. If you
monitor different elements of your training you can see
what works for you.
There’s no point in having a record unless you can smash
it. Despite the belief that as we get older we cannot
improve – there are many people who significantly
improve their best times over the years. By altering the
intensity and power of techniques used when exercising
you may find this allows your body to achieve great
improvements. Shifting from short burst to long range
activities may also open up improvements in different
events or distances – giving you many PBs to work
towards. Simply recording your PBs and measuring
against them is often motivation enough to every now
and then shake that tree to bring home the gold....even if
it is just in your head. Happy Record Chasing.

SOUTH
AUSTRALIA
SEEKS TO
LEGALISE GAY MARRIAGE
By Stephen Page
Advocates have welcomed a South
Australian state marriage equality bill
introduced by Greens MLC, Tammy
Franks.
Ms Franks’ bill allowing same-sex couples
to marry in South Australia mirrors similar
legislation currently before the Tasmanian
Parliament.
South Australian Liberal Party leader,
Isobel Redmond, has promised a
conscience vote on the bill, a position
confirmed by Upper House Opposition
Leader, Stephen Wade.
Australian Marriage Equality national
convener, Alex Greenwich, said: “My hope
is that the federal parliament will enact
marriage equality this year, but if that
doesn’t happen Tammy Franks’ bill is a
timely reminder that the state parliaments
are free to move forward on this important
issue.”
“A South Australian Liberal conscience
vote also sends a strong message to the
federal Coalition about the importance of
MPs voting according to their individual
values.”
Tammy Franks said: “It’s the right time to
end the Howard-imposed ban on same-sex

marriage and send the right message on
behalf of our same-sex attracted brothers,
sisters, mothers and fathers, sons and
daughters: Australians … want and
deserve a fair go for all, regardless of their
sexuality or gender.”
The federal parliament can pass laws
about marriage and divorce. After the
Howard government amended the Marriage
Act so that marriage was defined, under
that Act, as only “between a man and a
woman,” leading constitutional experts,
including Professor George Williams, have
argued that there is nothing to prevent the
states from legislating to allow same sex
marriage.
For the bill to be enacted will require
ALP support, which has not yet been
forthcoming. If the bill is enacted it
almost certainly will be the subject of a
constitutional challenge in the High Court.

EXTREMELY LOUD AND
INCREDIBLY CLOSE (M)
CONTRABAND (MA)
With the award season films saturating the market right now
(‘The Descendants’, ‘The Artist’, ‘Hugo’...) it’s good to have a
little choice for escapism, and ‘Contraband’ adheres to that in
spades. Making his Hollywood film debut as a director, Baltasar
Kormakur, helms this actioner starring reliable genre entrant
Mark Wahlberg as a former smuggler brought back to his old
lifestyle in order to save his brother-in-law from a dangerous
drug lord (Giovanni Ribisi). Assembling a crew, Wahlberg’s Chris
Farraday sets off to Panama in an attempt to score millions of
dollars in counterfeit bills, hoping this one job will wipe the slate
clean for the irresponsible acts of his wife’s (Kate Beckinsale)
brother.
Reading the description, it’s quite evident as to how generic
the film is and it plays into the formula without missing a beat;
Double crossing? Check. Hero’s family threatened? Check.
Close call on job execution? Check. But in spite of all this, it
knows what it needs to do to keep audiences entertained and
‘Contraband’ certainly succeeds. Wahlberg doesn’t put too
much effort into his role, Ribisi as the drug lord overacts with the
best of them, and Beckinsale has very little to do (a far cry from
‘Underworld: Awakening’), but it all doesn’t really matter cause
the final product, familiar as it is, is still satisfactory.
As we have been told with the advertising, ‘this is not a film about September 11, it’s about the
days after.’ And indeed the attacks on the World Trade Centre aren’t the main focus, but an
instigator to the journey of young Oskar Schell (Thomas Horn), an amateur explorer affected by
Autism Spectrum Disorder (Asperger’s or something of the sort). When he loses his father (Tom
Hanks) in the tragedy he becomes manically obsessed with finding the origin of a key, something
he finds rummaging through his father’s belongings, believing it was left for him specifically to
ultimately uncover a message. As Oskar narrows down the key to having something to do with
the surname Black, he manages to source every person in New York with that last name and
begins a door to door mission to find out if they knew his father and if they know about the key.
The film follows Oskar’s journey and the multitude of people he meets, most of whom take him in
to their lives for the day and reveal their own stories; Max Von Sydow as a mute who joins Oskar
for some of his searchings, and the glorious Viola Davis as a woman suffering through a divorce
are two of the more prominent people visited.
Tom Hank and
Sandra Bullock
give the film
some star power
but unfortunately
their roles are
somewhat
limited. The film
still, however,
managed to
pick up an
Academy Award
nomination for
Best Film. I get
the feeling that
this will be one of
the severe ‘love
or hate’ films out
at the moment.

The
Complete Guide
to Civil Unions
What is a civil union?
A civil partnership is a new way of formally
recognising a committed relationship
between a couple, regardless of their
gender.
The relationship is legally recognised in
Queensland and the Commonwealth once
it is registered at the Registry of Births,
Deaths and Marriages.
What is the legal effect of registering a
civil partnership?
Registration of a civil partnership will
provide you and your civil partner with
proof of the existence of the relationship.
As a civil partner you will not have to
provide any further proof that your
relationship exists. This will make it easier
for you to prove your relationship for things
like superannuation, tax and government
welfare payments and in emergency
situations such as at the hospital.
When will we be able to enter into a civil
partnership?
Civil partnerships are available now! The
Act came into effect on 23 February.
How do we enter into a civil partnership?
You can enter into a civil partnership in two ways:
What if things go wrong?
1. Registration only – completing an application form and
submitting it to the Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages. Your
Civil Union can then be registered after the mandatory 10 day
cooling off period.
We would certainly wish you and your
partner a long and happy union, but just
in case things don’t work out, a civil
partnership can be ended.
2. A declaration ceremony - You and your partner must complete
a Notice of Intention to Enter into a Civil Partnership form and
provide the notice to the Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages,
a regional courthouse, or to the Civil Partnership Notary who will
conduct the declaration ceremony. The notice must be provided
at least 10 days before the date of the ceremony. (The notice of
intent is valid for 12 months once submitted)
A civil partnership is terminated upon the
death or marriage of either partner, or it
can be terminated by court order.
At the ceremony there must be at least one witness present.
You and your partner, the witness and the Civil Partnership Notary
are required to sign a Notice of Declaration of a Civil Partnership.
Where can we have our ceremony?
Who can enter into a civil partnership?
You may enter into a civil partnership if:
• you are an adult (18 years or over)
• you are not married or already in a civil
partnership
• you are not in a prohibited relationship
with your proposed civil partner (this
basically means that your partner is not a
family member).
• either you or your proposed civil partner
(or both of you) lives in Queensland.
Initially ceremonies to make a declaration
of civil partnership will need to be held
at the Registry of Births, Deaths and
Marriages, 110 George Street, Brisbane
or at a regional courthouse as no Civil
Partnership Notaries have been appointed
yet. Civil Partnership Notaries will start to
be registered after 2 April 2012.
You or your civil partner may apply to the
District Court for an order terminating your
civil partnership if:
• you have lived separately and apart for
a continuous period of at least 12 months,
and
• at least one of you believes that there is
no likelihood of a reconciliation between
you.
Where can I get more information and
relevant forms?
Details about fees, forms and other
information can be found on the Births,
Deaths and Marriages’ website.
Click: http://www.justice.qld.gov.au/ and
select Births, Deaths and Marriages
Once external Civil Partnership Notaries
are registered, civil partnership
ceremonies will be able to be held
anywhere in Queensland, subject to
obtaining the relevant approvals to access
and use that location.

The wonderful world of the
Male Nipple
By Eliot Rifkin
Well here’s a topic that isn’t chatted about often –
Men’s nipples being twisted by random strangers in
clubs or work – a surprisingly common occurrence.
Talking about size, the more you play with nipples, the
bigger they can grow. In fact they can grow as much as 2
cm! People who use clothespins know this, in their quest
to get to that edge between pain and extreme pleasure.
Here’s some more male nipple fodder that will add to your
conversations…
#11 Just because they are erect doesn’t mean we’re
aroused - Nipples can become hard due to sexual
stimulation, but they can also harden due to cold
temperatures.
So why do people do this? Is it sexual, do they want to

Woohoo .. I’m back … hi sweeeties.
They always trot me out at election time, mind you the ol’
girl has a bit of mould on her this year … Is it just me or it
the damp rising in Queensland?
maybe Lucy Lips … maybe not? Finally I can get my tired
old box on stage again? …. Just waiting for that phone call
girlfriend and I work cheap!
Well my lovelies hasn’t the shows at Sporties got
hellishingly good all of a sudden? Those tropicana
style moves plus Mattie and who is that other hot boy
with a smile that could drop a performing girl’s bra
at the snap of a finger? I don’t know how Ella and
the girls keep themselves tucked … serious strain
there! Sorry no potty mouth I have
been told to keep things PC. One

Now I had the good fortune to spend some serious time on
the Gold Coast recently and wow has that changed. Escape
is just the ants pants and the eye candy … wooohoo …
nearly had a heart attack I tell you. Pretty little angels
everywhere and I tell you I got accidentally flogged. A few
too many bevvies yet again and my counsellor tells me that
is a bad thing to do. Apparently moderation is
everything. But my counsellor did not have an
apoofany like I did .. standing on the balcony
at Escape gazing over the Pacific Ocean and
being hugged by a gay angel! I thought I was in
heaven, and yes, I am heading that way at my

bill last time … well … I had a few friends. The question on
everyone’s lips … who will be front and centre on stage all
frocked up? I hear someone is gunna do a guest spot …
Finally the GREAT PUB DEBATE, the business
people invited a few pollies for a good ol

indication, this will be a real hum dinger. A
stage full of politicians that can affect our lives,
a few beers combined with question time...
could be fun! No gloves, just respect and direct debating …

TANDOORI
CHICKEN
TORTILLAS
!
New
By Derek Chew
There’s more to the Moray
Makes 8 (2 each for 4 people)
METHOD:
INGREDIENTS
1 packet of 8-12 soft flour tortillas (for burritos)
24 slices of fresh Roma tomato
8 handfuls of washed baby rocket leaves
Freshly ground black pepper
Fresh lemon to serve
MARINADE
16 chicken tenderloins or large skinless
chicken fillets cut into strips
2-3 desser tspoon ‘Sharwood’s’
Tandoori paste for an orange
colour (or “Pataks’ brand for a
pink Tandoori)
3 desser tspoon of plain yogur t
1 desser tspoon lemon juice
DRESSING
1 cup of plain yoghur t
1 Tbs of freshly chopped mint
1. Marinate the chicken for 30 minutes (or
longer) and place on an oven tray with sides.
Bake @ 288C/550F for about 10 minutes.
Turn each piece and cook for another 5
minutes.
2. Meanwhile make the minted yogurt and
prepare the other ingredients.
3. To serve, fill each tortilla with a little
rocket, 3 slices of tomato, 2 strips of chicken
and a drizzle of minted yoghurt. Finish with a
squeeze of lemon and ground black pepper.
4. You may also wish to place all in the
centre of the table, family style, to ‘make
your own’.
5. Tandoori chicken is best hot from the
oven but is also good chilled for a picnic the
next day.
While Moray Café has always been a popular
break fast spot for locals and avid brekk y
goers alike, perhaps not as well known are
their offerings for lunch and dinner. Ambient
lighting and white linen provide a warm,
slightly moody but still relaxed atmosphere
at night; a contrast from the bright and casual
break fast experience.
The menu reads like a roll call of all of
your classic favourites only influenced by
contemporary twists: think chicken parma and
steaks, Italian-inspired pasta dishes, and even a
retro dish in the form of lamb’s fry and bacon.
Not sure what to order? Then be sure to ask
for suggestions from the at tentive and friendly
wait-staf f.
For star ters, we were rewarded with fluf fy and moreish corn frit ters and Spanishstyle meatballs cooked in a lovely napoli sauce and enlivened by flavoursome
melted iberica cheese. The mains are prepared with the same level of skill and
care. The carb-free package of delight ful crisp-skinned fish is accompanied by
a lively salad and a zesty beurre blanc sauce. The risot to is well-cooked creamy
rice studded with delectable scallops and flavoured with a hint of saf fron, while
to describe the special of rump mignon, a generous slab of juicy meat wrapped in
bacon and dressed with a tasty mushroom sauce, as immensely satisfying would
be an understatement.
Make sure that you keep some room for the fabulous desser ts and house-baked
sweets. The wine list is shor t but well considered, star ting from a reasonable $8
per glass for Barossa Valley and Margaret River labels, but BYO is also an option.
As for the icing on the cake, their daily dinner specials are well wor th noting,
par ticularly their $13 all mains on Tuesdays and the all day $15 steak and fish on
Fridays and Saturdays respectively. Established for almost 30 years, the Moray Cafe
an understated stalwar t locals would love to keep secret and foodies would love to
discover.

Just a cour tesy ‘did you know’ about the
current happenings of the Young Divas
Aussie Idol contestants of Australia. Are they
still collaborating or is this it for a bit??
Kate Deraugo – one of the celebrity
contestants on Excess Baggage....good luck
young lady. Let’s get rid of these tuckshop
arms once and for all. I also smell maybe
a plot to release a new single once Excess
Baggage concludes since she may have
more of a following af ter reality t v...pun.
Young
Divas
- where
are they
now?
Emily Williams – has just released an album
called ‘Uncover’ for all to discover how raw
and true she can be. This is a new album
fresh from Emily with no covers hoping to
inspire the dance floor as well as people of
her talent. She is set to play at The Beat on
the 24th February and Escape on the 25th.
Paulini – just released a new single called
‘Fireman’ and what a hot, steamy dance
track it is. Hello, reinvention. Paulini has
been doing great things for her music career
not so much here in Australia but overseas
in places like Spain, Japan, South Africa,
Germany, The Netherlands and most recently
China. She also plans to play at the Mardi
Gras coming up. Hot.
Cosima De Vito – replacing Jessica Mauboy
who replaced Ricki-Lee...what is Cosima
up to??? Your guess is as good as mine.
However her twit ter states more music on
the way. Bring it Cosima and raise the bar
along with the other girls!!

Splendour Farewells QLD
It was announced recently that Splendour In The Grass is no longer to
be situated at Woodfordia but returning to Byron Bay Belongil Fields.
This news has been applauded by majority of Splendour fans along
with numerous petitions to bid Splendour back to its home town. In the
past two years Splendour has been at Woodford. Woodfordia allowed
Splendour its own amphitheatre for the main acts and an interim
location whilst organisers worked on alternative parklands in Byron
Bay. QNews cannot help but wonder where the line is drawn with this
new announcement? Did people like the new location bet ter than the
old? Are people relieved that it’s back at Byron? Fans that joined the
Splendour band wagon when it star ted in Queensland excited about
experiencing a Byron festival? Please let us know your thoughts.
Groovin The Moo announced
The rural festival makes its triumphant 2012 return. Groovin The Moo
is a national festival that hits up a distant rural town in each Australian
state – accessible for all the non city folk that are also festival mad. In
Queensland Groovin The Moo always stops by at the Murray Stadium
complex in Townsville. This 06 May, Townsville will host the following
groundbreaking acts plus more; Mutemath (Blood Pressure by them
is an amazing film clip), Mat t Corby makes his festival debut, Kaiser
Chiefs (possibly returning to boost their album flop), Adrian Lux
(teenage crime hit wonder), Hilltop Hoods, 360, Kimbra, Public Enemy,
Bluejuice and Chiddy Bang (such diversity...). Tickets have been on
sale since February 16 so if wanting to make a road trip to Townsville
or even Maitland and get amongst some great music for thcoming then
do it!!
Music Reviews
Lana Del Rey – Born To Die
The Tings Tings – Sounds From Nowheresville
Pravana – Yoga Grooves
A friend of mine told me a way to describe Lana’s
music is ‘sadcore.’ Her tones and song themes are
definitely depressing but it’s also contagious and
incredulously soothing that you can’t help but keep
listening. Her voice and rif fs is pure music cocaine
to these editors’ ears. Lana could be singing in
each track for several minutes ‘dir ty, sweaty,
brown shoes’ but as long as it’s at dif ferent
pitches and in tune it will sound phenomenally
brilliant!! Her music isn’t constantly melancholy or
dark but her lyrics can also tell a ‘not so sad’ story
yet adopt those deep, hypnotic, rangefull vocals. A
voice you cannot help but love. Without highlighting
any tracks in par ticular, every track will fulfil that
Lana fix the everyday listener might be seeking
if too a massive fan of Lana’s voice. An album
appropriate for any scene. Lana Del Rey <3!!
According to a press release The Ting Ting’s have
completely thrown their song writing rule book away
and have star ted writing and per forming whatever
they want and what makes them happy as opposed to
the pressure of writing music that impacts from their
previous ‘DIY hardcore pop’ (as quoted by their latest
press release). This is highly evident in their first track
on this album ‘Silence’ (which is far from it). Their
sound still has that pop, cockney, punk feel but comes
of f a bit more heavier and grungier and less bubblegum
pop’esque. ‘Give It Back’ also defines The Ting Ting’s
reinvention allowing Jules more vocal time, which
is also dif ferent. Katie also really breaks barriers by
serenading in a full length track in ‘Day To Day’ showing
of f what a talented, unique voice she has along with her
rapping, cheeky vocals. ‘Guggenheim’ is another great
par ty track which also breaks Katie’s stereotypical
song writings. A great, educational listen and also
demonstrates a new, dif ferent, reinventing direction for
The Tings Tings.
This album was forwarded to me in case there
is a large demographic out there that practise the
ancient ar t of yoga. Simon Lewis (aka Pravana)
has put together a myriad of electronic soothing
beats to inspire, rela x and soundtrack anyone’s
yoga ritual or spare time even. Elements in these
tracks sound very ‘electronic and unique as if
Pravana was at home on his laptop making music
just like the geniuses Oliver Tank and Jonti with the
occasional implementation of Egyptian and Indian
tunes and rhy thms. Such an enchanting, tranquil
65 minutes of music, themed as a ‘rela xation
album’ – you won’t even realise Pravana has gone
to a new track it is puzzled together that ef fectively.
If a yoga fanatic then this album is a must or a
great gif t idea.

Glee – Fridays @ 7pm on 10
Fresh from Michael Jackson week, this for tnight is gay-gay-gay! Firstly, Ricky Mar tin
makes his debut as a new Spanish teacher (wait, what? Isn’t Will the Spanish teacher?
Hmmm) and the producers are determined he’ll be back (possibly as a series regular).
Then, it’s time to meet Rachel’s gay dads and they more than live up to expectations
(and the dinner table conversation is squirm-inducing). Plus, Valentine’s Day brings
back a familiar face, whilst Santana and Brit tany’s relationship brings a protest from
a student and Figgins is forced to deal with their PDA (and Glee Project co-winner
Samuel Larsen makes his debut). Also: an eerie coincidence sees Mercedes channel
her inner-Whitney (aired just two days af ter the singer’s death) for VD and Blaine
makes his welcome return af ter the diva that is Sebastian went psycho to take down
Kur t!
Revenge (Mon 8:30, 7), the millenium’s best soap continues, have you figured out
who’s gay yet? 2 Broke Girls (Tues 8, 9) proves to be the year’s best comedy (it is!)
with its sexual humour and undeniable lead chemistry. Shameless (Sun 9:20, W) hits
its second season – Ian’s bulked up (holy shit!) and continues to deny the stereotype
by being the twink who tops the rough-trade, while Frank lowers himself even fur ther (!)
to get some cash, what’ll he do? And don’t forget, the (Desperate)Housewives (Thurs
9:30, 7) of Wisteria Lane might have one final season, but it’s a damn good one!

Personally, I couldn’t care less where the world’s economy is
heading. I know my financial future is rock solid safe.
Warren Buffet, Robert Kyosaki, Donald Trump, Paul Zane Pilzer

in the next two decades. They all have invested heavily in one
dynamic growth industry that is worth trillions and growing
exponentially!
In Australia, just one company has created over a dozen
Millionaires from former small business owners,
tradespeople, office workers, people from all walks of life. I invite
you to see my success plan for yourself. If it fits for you
– fantastic, let’s get you started. If not, that’s ok too.

Meester) and ‘You
Make Me Feel’
(Sabi). Now they are
coming to Brisbane
for the Soundwave
festival giving a bit
of range, diversity
and synthpop to the
punk, metal, rock lineup that lays ahead.
Here’s what QNews
was able to discover
when chatting to Alex.
Q: Australia has only really discovered
this band recently yet you all have been
around for a while. How did you all meet
considering lead singer Gabe Saporta was
apart of Midtown Band previously?
Alex: very interesting actually. So Ryland
Blackington (guitarist) and I have known
each other since high school. So when I
moved to New York, he had already been
up here for a year and he heard that I
moved here and we connected making
music together. Separately, I ended up
living upstairs from the drummer of Gabe’s
old band (Midtown) and he’s the one that
introduced us to Gabe and Gabe started
his new project and Rob (the drummer)
suggested us be in Gabe’s new band..so
that’s how we joined basically. Victoria,
we were looking on myspace.com for a
Brooklyn keyboard player, female. Victoria
came up and Gabe was like ‘I want her.’ I
was like...’I think I know her..’ and yeah, it
turns out I knew her boyfriend at the time so
I got in touch with her and then she joined
our band.
Why female? A bit of diversity?
Yeah to mix it up a little ...I mean who wants
to watch 4 to 5 dudes...
[laughs] I guess it depends on the
demographic really Alex considering one
of the themes of this magazine...
[laughs] Fair enough [laughs] but a girl can
definitely spice things up a bit.
Will Victoria be taking on the female
collaboration parts when we see you live?
Yes! She has been doing the Leighton

|
issue 293 www.qnews.com.au
Meester parts and the Sabi parts live, which
has been... well she’s doing a really great
job with it.
Really got to know Cobra Starship with
your recent album, yet you have released
four albums previously. How has the
evolution been?
Well you know the first album we weren’t
really a band yet. Gabe started writing music
with music producers and then he’s like
‘I’m gonna start putting a band together.’
Originally the first song by Kobra Starship
ever was the song for the movie Snakes
On A Plane- and that was before it was
anything so everyone thought it would be
this supergroup they all teamed up for this
one song. So Gabe started a band while he
was making a record – we came in at the
very end of that and just started touring like
crazy! During that first year we toured with
Fall Out Boy and Patrick, the lead singer,
produced our second record while on tour
with them – we did it all on our laptops and
then back home from tour we just ran to the
studio, finished recording it and then put
out our second album. Third album is where
we started to branch out a little for us – we
started getting better at our own production
and song writing and things like that. We
kinda go into newer music – pop music had
evolved. We gotta keep up with the times
and think what’s gonna be next. It’s scary
to take risks. While we recorded this album,
Gabe got a sith on his vocal chord so he had
vocal surgery which was really hard to do
in the middle of making another record and
writing it. We don’t stick to one sound – we
branch out into all kinds of music.
A common theme in your music is synth
pop – considering Soundwave the festival
you are featured at has a different theme
to your music genre etc – one would ask
are you aware of what you are getting
th
yourselves into this February 26 ?
Yes! I’ve looked into and it’s funny –
definitely look at the line up, it was a little
intimidating – but I’m so incredibly excited
regardless. I couldn’t believe it when I saw
it but I was like...’ok...lets go down to see
Marilyn Manson and Slipknot...’ I am so
excited. I cant wait to see all of those bands
play.
Ok so I would imagine a few of our readers
watch Gossip Girl. Your band was fortunate
enough to collaborate with her for ‘Good
Girls Go Bad’ – how was that experience?
Working with Leighton was awesome! She’s
super nice and has a great sense of humour.
We’re pretty obnoxious so we can get pretty
obnoxious in those situations [laughs].
When we were shooting the video...we all
got a little wasted...you gotta loosen up for
those things you know...We had to figure out
how to loosen up somehow so we all got a
little obnoxious and have fun with the whole
thing and she was just rolling and running
right along with it which is nice because
some people just like ‘what are these guys
doing? Who are these people?’ She wasn’t
a huge diva, she was really nice, she did a
good job on the track.

NEWS
FROM THE
NORTHERN
RIVERS
‘It’s So
Gay
South of
the BORDER!’
So, helllooooo 2012! At some point after the debris from the snazzy pyrotechnics
settles, and post the post-New Year hangover and comedown, the year begins
in earnest (and if you’re lucky, with a bang!). Time to knuckle down, nose to the
grindstone, shoulder to the wheel and all that. Late February may seem somewhat late
in the Judeo-Christian calendar to be declaring that the year has begun, but, fellow
queers, I can say with certainty that the bell tolled for me today. I woke to a cow with
mastitis (yes, I’m an udder-massaging radical farm-babe), an overdue column to write
and the first day of university to attend. Like a runaway freight train, this year promises
to be quite a ride.
But enough about me, let’s talk downtown Gaytown south of the border. What’s
happening?
Tropical Fruits has well and truly put TRIBE to bed, and that would be a king fit for a queen,
natch… Being an organization that rarely draws breath, plans for the year are being rolled
out with flair. The Easter party is currently trending for the TF with the theme of Dragon. So
get it on. Your drag. Celebrate your inner fire breathing fabulous creatureness as well.
The new and returning faces of the TF committee are promising more than before for your
eyes, ears, bodies and minds. The lowdown will appear here as it happens. Also keep your
eye on the Tropical Fruits facebook page and website for more breaking news on that one.
DELICIOUS, the regular queer-friendly bounce-yer-booty gig at the rockin’ Lismore bowlo is
on again this Saturday 25th February. Make a weekend of it. check out some local talent on
the beaches. There’s still time for summer lovin’! The weather is glorious!
Film buffs should make the trip to Byron Bay Film Festival beginning Friday March 2, 2012.
Over 10 days the BBFF will screen a range of diverse and dynamic films. The festival
features over 100 films, numerous workshops and free seminars all in the beautiful
creative hub of Byron Bay. It’s held at the Byron Bay Community Centre, Byron Bay. Check
out www.bbff.com.au for more info.
This stunning show is a must-see on your SOTB cultural calendar- Light Sensitive Material:
Works from the Verghis Collection. It’s a vibrant selection of works from the private
collection of Rachel Verghis, one of Australia’s youngest art collectors. Curated by Richard
Perram, Director, Bathurst Regional Art Gallery, the exhibition brings together 21 works
from 14 emerging and mid-career Australian artists whose use of light is integral to their
work, presenting a fascinating snapshot of and finishes Sunday March 18. Check out www.
lismoregallery.org for more info.
From culture to politics. Annually on 8 March, thousands of events are held throughout
the world to inspire women and celebrate achievements. A global web of rich and diverse
local activity connects women from all around the world ranging from political rallies,
community activities, networking events, performances and more. We’ll be part of that,
South of the Border. Wherever you are, get involved, or come and make some beautiful
noise with us. Personally, as an International Woman, I think every day should be
International Women’s Day! No no, not the trashy mag, darling!
Hope to see your pretty faces below the Vegas belt soon… mmmmkay? Keep it sweet,
snappy, spicy, saucy and South til next time!
Much queer love, Ms Vxxx
Stockholm Syndrome in Albion may be the new kid on
the dining, drinking and entertainment block, but in a
very short time they have really made their presence
felt. Located on the trendy Sandgate Rd cafe precinct,
Stockholm Syndrome not only boasts beautiful
Swedish food with an Australian twist, but also a
stellar entertainment programme that is constantly
seeking out the best local and interstate talent –
hardly surprising considering the venue is co-owned
by prominent LGBT identity Mark Fitzsimmons.
February and March will see two amazing performers
gracing the venue’s beautiful skyline stage, the first
being renowned Scottish singing sensation Mary Kiani
The starlets of
Stockholm

issue 293 www.qnews.com.au
who will launch her brand new album Little Things Mean
a Lot, followed by Sydney songstress and television
personality Courtney Act.
Kiani’s cracking jazz style has built up a large and
fiercely loyal following in Sydney’s gay community
through her regular performances at LGBT venues
and events and will be a real treat for Brisbane diners.
Performing Saturday 25 February, Kiani’s show can be
viewed in a number of ways: as part of a three course
meal and show package ($75.00 per head); as a seated
show ($25) or with a standing room ticket where you
can wander around and soak up the unique Swedish
culture and atmosphere ($15). Dinner starts at 6:00pm
with the show beginning at 8:30pm.
Likewise the incomparable showgirl Courtney Act is set
to sizzle upstairs in the Stockholm Syndrome showroom
with two shows in March as she performs an electric
and eclectic mix of her hits and your favourite numbers.
Three course meal & show packages are great value
at $80.00 per person while a show only ticket is a
very affordable $35.00. Courtney will be performing
Thursday 8 March and Friday 9 March with dinner from
6:00pm and the show at 8:30pm.
Both shows have strictly limited tickets so bookings
are essential. Phone 3262 3738. Stockholm Syndrome
is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, seven days a
week at 340 Sandgate Road, Albion.
