My Rotaract Family,
We are happy to see you all in European Convention of Rotaract Europe
in Istanbul.
As every year this convention will take place with a great success.
We will host 520 European Rotaractors and 100 Turk Rotaractors in this
convention. All of us have a chance to make contact with other Rotaractors from Europe or
around the world by sharing our Rotaract thoughts.
I have gained many friends, learned humanity, society and every thing since i have joined to
my Rotaract Club.
So why cant all of us gain these?
Give your energy and time to Rotaract , make projects and be sure that you will gain more
than you will give.
I am glad to Rotary for starting Rotaract in 1960s.
This year International Rotaract is celebrating its 41. Year . In Turkey ,especially in
Anatolia, 41 means “how nice” and we chose “nazar “ bead that is an Anatolian and
Mesopotamia `s symbol meaning 41 or “how nice”.
So in this “how nice” year of Rotaract , D.2420 makes EUCO 2009 in Istanbul in Turkey.
This is a good conincidence , this is a good irony …
We are happy for hosting and seeing you in Istanbul,
We hope you will enjoy and never forget EUCO 2009 Istanbul…
Yours in Rotaract,
Rtc. Dr. Guvenc Kockaya
D.2420.Rotaract Representative

About
Rotaract establishments have been active in Turkey since 1982. Today, there are 95
Rotaract Clubs in various cities of Turkey with over 2500 active young working
members.
If we take a look member profile of the Clubs; members in general are recently
employed University graduates, mostly with a Masters Degree, who are within the 5% of

Rotaract clubs contribute and raise young people who are sensitive to the problems of
their society and eager to resolve them, thus initiating a team work with his/ her
colloquies or fellow rotaracts. During the course of their early working life they learn
and get experience about the organization procedures, meeting management, project
development and implementation, public speaking.

ISTANBUL ADALAR ROTARACT CLUB
As the club of princess islands; we organized the training program
of sailing for Rotaractors. In addition to that, we took a part of
sailing races under the name of Adalar Rotary Sailing Races.
Adalar Rotaract Club has a pilot school which we
help every year. In a period of 5 years, we
completed the lack of cleaning inventories,
replaced the library, set a mini conference hall
with sound equipments, and provided the simple
student materials for children whose families are
under the average income.
Every year we organize a boat trip to
princess islands of Istanbul with
Rotaractors. Trip consists of 2 parts;
swimming and short tour of one of
the islands
ISTANBUL ALTUNIZADE ROTARACT CLUB
Istanbul Altunizade Rotaract Club of District
2420 successfully accomplished “II. Ağva
Beach Cleaning Project” in 9th -10th of August,
2008 as a joint project with Ankara Koru
Rotaract Club of District 2430. The first one of
this project was performed in 2005-2006 period
and İstanbul Altunizade Rotaract Club is
planning to make it a conventional project of the
club.
This year two rotaract clubs from different districts strengthened the relationship between
each other working side by side and also were inspired for coming joint projects. Apart from
the devoted members of two rotaract clubs, rotaractors from both districts were also there to
support the project in the best way.
Mission of this project was to clean Ağva
beach which was polluted by garbage and
waste materials. Beach cleaning action started
early in 9th of August and performed by 22
rotaractors through a framework of friendship
and service. We collected garbage filling 20
pieces of trash bags. These wasted materials
had been sent to municipality to be
exterminated. Besides cleaning the beach we
had a barbeque party sponsored by Efes Pilsen
and Maret on Saturday night and had so much
fun by swimming in Ağva's cool water during
the day. On Sunday we had a boat tour after delicious meals by the river of Ağva. All
participants of the Project shared good memories and made brand new friends which will last
forever. We are sure that the third of this project in 2009-2010 period will also be a means of
service through friendship and close collaborations.
On 13th of March, the day first Rotaract
Club was founded, we visited Covidien
Office whose General Manager is the
secretary of İstanbul Altunizade Rotary
Club. This project was a joint project with
Istanbul Beyazıt Rotaract Club.
The department managers of Covidien,
which is a leading medical firm made
presentations
about
Covidien
and
workflow in their own departments.
ISTANBUL ALTUNIZADE ROTARACT CLUB
The participant rotaractors had the opportunity
of asking questions about the firm, departments,
medical sector and could present their CVs to
Human Resources department directly. The
project aiming professional developments of
rotaractors and encouraging them accomplished
sowing the seeds of hope for future.
In January, 2009 Istanbul
Altunizade Rotaract Club
founded
“Cultural
Development
Committee” to contribute
the cultural developments
of the club members and
strengthen the friendship
between them.
The
Committee
has
organized every month
various cultural activities
and museum tours and
this program is carried out perfectly. According to the program; Dali Exhibition in Sabancı
Museum was visited in January; in February Toy Museum was visited and after that we
attended Jozi Levi Rio Carnival. Rahmi Koç Industry Museum was visited in March.
In the coming months all members of the club will go to the theater, Cartoon Museum and
Dolmabahçe Palace together and will keep having fun.

children. With three more continuing cure, 600
children’s hepatitis B vaccines were implemented.
We have taken the second rank in BESP 2004
awards held by Europe Rotaract Union with this
project.
ISTANBUL ATAKÖY ROTARACT CLUB
Our main aim was to raise awareness in society
about Aids, how to avoid it and its possible
outcomes. Starting from 2004, on Aids week we
have been distributing handouts and condoms at
Taksim Square, in the most crowded place of
İstanbul. With this project we have taken the
second rank in BESP 2005 awards held by Europe
Rotaract Union.
ISTANBUL BEBEK ROTARACT CLUB
In 2008-2009, we as Bebek Rotaract Club leaned mostly on performing Community Services.
We have been visiting Rotary’s Kids Home perodicly. Rotary has gathered the kids working
on streets to this building and us
Rotaractors thought that the kids would be
happy if we spent some time with them.
During this past year we have been
wathcing movies, handing out snacks and
trying to get to know eachother with the
kids. We were really glad to be able to see
the kids with a smile on their faces as we
left. Every year our sponsor Rotary Club,
Bebek Rotary Club organizes an
International Sailing Camp under IR’s
Short Term Youth Exchange Programs.
This year we are going to have the 8th camp here in İstanbul. Every year, we try to break the
prejudices of our visitors and make them see the real Turkey and Turkish people.
This year as Bebek Rotaract Club we decided to prepare a visual presentation for our guests
so that they could take it back home to share with their Rotary Club, Rotaract Club, family
and hopefuly friends. Attached to the presentation we want to give them letter written to our
great anchestor, leader Atatürk by elementary school students to be able to show our love,
respect and aspiration.
ISTANBUL BEYAZIT ROTARACT CLUB
Like every year, The Beyazıt Rotaract Club
joined to the Democracy Convoy that was
organized by the municipality of Kadiköy
territory at the Bagdat Street in 29 October 2008,
which was also the 86th anniversary of the
Turkish Democracy. With the contribution of
Beyazıt Rotaract Club’s members and their
guests, we all celebrated our republic and the
secular democracy which was founded by the
great leader and the father of the Turkish Nation,
Mustafa Kemal Atatürk and his friends in 29
October 1923.
The modern Turkey was founded after the
Turkish Independent War (1919-1922) which
was occurred against the nations who tried to
invade the Turkish homeland after the collapse
of Ottoman Empire, in many hard conditions
and with great sacrifices. Besides like every
year, we all promised to secure and protect the
legacy of democracy that raised Turkish
Nation to the status of modern world nations.
Next year, again we will be there to celebrate
the values of our free democracy and also glad
to see you with us.

Etiler Rotaract Club, funded in 2009, has been
creating projects aiming awareness on the
consumption of natural resources, importance of
literacy, professionalism and intercultural sharing.
Below are two examples for our projects:
We aimed to create consciousness on the
irresponsible consumption of clean water and
came up with this project in 2008.. In March
2009, we performed the project for the 2nd
time and continue to perform it in the coming
years. On March 21st, on a sunny Saturday, we
gathered up in Besiktas square (one of the
most crowdd ones) as Rotaractors and
Interactors.
ISTANBUL ETILER ROTARACT CLUB
We distributed our brochures which gives drastic data on how fast the water is used up and
what we should do to overcome the extinction. We also gave samll bottles of water as a
present by saying 'This is a gift from us, drink it with appetite now. But tomorrow you may
not find it that easily. Be aware and protect your water. Apart from the social responsibilty
purpose the project served to promote Rotaract and develop members for sponsorship
interviews since we got the waters by sponsorship.

office visits were to: John Hopkins Hospital and
Turkcell.
ISTANBUL GALATASARAY ROTARACT CLUB
The Rotaract and The Rotary Clubs of Galatasaray
organize a Youth Forum every May for high
school students from all over Istanbul. The
purpose of this forum is to involve high school
students in the activities of presenting, sharing and
discussing ideas on a specific subject. This year,
The Rotaract and The rotary Clubs of Galatasaray
will be performing the 13th Youth Forum with the
subject “Traffic Problem in Istanbul”. Some of the
subjects from the previous years include “Social
Problems Caused by Substance Abuse”, “Turkish
Youth in the Mirror”, “Turkey in Your Dreams”, “What Does EU Mean to You?”.
The goal of our project begins with the motto of “making dreams real”. We aimed to “make
dreams real” by considering the ones that are not fortunate enough to obtain the necessities for
a living. These include both the children facing poverty and the refugees in our country that
do not have the opportunity to maintain regular conditions for a normal life.
Each of more than 500 hundred children aged between 8-12 in 15 primary schools have been
given a set of first-hand apparel which included a pair of boots, a pair of socks, a t-shirt, a
coat, a pullover and jeans. The distribution was done right before the religious bairam in
Turkey. More than 500 pieces of apparel were also sent to the regional support organizations
in Istanbul and to the city of Ardahan in order for distribution to the ones in need. 180 pieces
of jeans were donated to the Rotary Children House in Istanbul. In addition, second-hand
clothes were collected by our club members and were packed in a suitable way.
After our meeting with the commissionals from UN
High Commissioner for Refugees, we have decided to
enlarge our project; therefore these second-hand clothes
were sent to the in order for the commission to
distribute them to the refugees in need. During this
project, our sponsors include LCWaikiki, Hey Textile,
Cross Jeans and personal donations. Also, all of our
club members were involved in the collection and
arrangement of second-hand clothes.
For detailed information about all our projects, please visit www.galatasarayrotaract.org/en
ISTANBUL GAYRETTEPE ROTARACT CLUB
As Gayrettepe Rotaract Club, we organized a
visit to Bakirkoy Mental Hospital on 1st of
February, 2009. The aim of our visit was to
get informed about the needs of the patients
and to start a project that would trigger some
sensitivity to the issue.
It was observed that the patients needed
clothes, therefore Gayrettepe Rotaract Club
members initiated a campaign among their
families, acquaintances and other Rotaract
Clubs. In less than two weeks 20 bags of
unused clothes were collected and handed to
the authorities in the hospital to be given to
the ones in need.
We visited Yedikule Animal Shelter on 12th of October 2008,
as Gayrettepe Rotaract Club. We delivered the three parcel
packages of pharmaceuticals and newspaper that were
gathered by our club members to Meral Olcay. The first visit
to this animal shelter was organized last year and was planned
to develop consciousness and continue each year as a tradition
so that our support can be long lasting.
ISTANBUL GEBZE ROTARACT CLUB
Gebze Rotaract Club was established at 1999 in
Gebze, Kocaeli and belong to 2420 District. In this
term, we would like to focus on the health projects.
There will be continuous projects for the upcoming
years with a name of “Acceleration for health”. In
our last two terms we understood that we can share
our power as monetary or voluntary to have a
healthier community.
ISTANBUL GEBZE ROTARACT CLUB
We started this project by analyzing the public
health organs and support their shortages. This
analysis showed us that our public organs need
so many support to get more powerful. Our first
project has started with the Wheelchair support.
It was done in the special week for disabled
people. In this week 20 wheelchairs were given.
9 wheelchairs to the Darıca Public Hospital, 9
wheelchairs to Fatih Public Hospital, 1
wheelchair to Presidential of Gebze Group
Health and 1 wheelchair to a depended person
on 16th May in 2008.
Our following project for the “Acceleration for health” is to plant 250 threes in Fatih Public
Hospital in April 2009. Which will provide a better environment to the hospital so that it will
effect the healing process of the patients in a positive way.
We are accelerating ourselves for better health conditions and for a healthier environment.
We have started our term 2008-2009 with our
Rotaract International goal “ Make the dreams real”.
Our children are really important for us, the only
thing that we can do to make them happy is to
provide them better conditions. We found a small
step to help the children which will be the beginning
of a long journey. 90 packages of food support were
given to Gun Gelişim Rehabilitation and Education
Center to be transferred to families of children in
need.
This was not the last step of our project, apparel
aids followed the first project and we have
dressed 35 children.
We are a small team with big hearts. We believe
“service is prior than ourselves”. It will be our
pleasure to welcome you on our website
www.gebzerotaract.org and to see you in our
projects.
ISTANBUL ROTARACT CLUB
The Rotaract Club of Istanbul was established by sponsoring Rotary Club of Istanbul in 1982.
It has been known by the international Rotary since 1985. The club’s main aim is to provide
solutions to important problems of the society such as poverty, infrastructure and children
care.
ISTANBUL ROTARACT CLUB
During the last term, Rotaract Club of Istanbul raised funds for a small village named
Orhaniye in the city of Bursa. The village lacked an infrastructural water system, which the
Club sponsored the construction of the system and supplied the village with water. The
Rotaract Club of Istanbul has completed all the projects which were determined at the
beginning of each Rotaract term. Also the Club tries to participate in the international
Rotaract and Rotary organizations especially in the Rotaract Europe Meetings and EUCO,
because building new relations, interacting with different cultures and creating new
friendships are essential for both Rotaract Club of Istanbul and Rotaract International.
This year’s main project concerns the village of Damal in Ardahan, Turkey. We are aiming to
build a computer laboratory in Damal village, so that students can get a more modern
education and benefit from using computers. Moreover, we will encourage families to send
their girls for primary education, which still is a serious problem in the rural parts of Turkey.
Our project with the village of Damal will also consist of helping 102 girl students who
cannot afford to buy their own school uniforms. You can also participate in this project by
helping us assemble ready-to-use computers for the village, any help is appreciated!
Our second main project concerns the village of Balaban in town of Demirköy in Kırklareli.
The Rotaract Club of Istanbul aims to help to solve the education problem in the villages in
Turkey. For this project, our community services committee made a research in Thrace
Region. According to the result of the research The Rotaract Club of Istanbul gave decision to
support the village of Balaban primary school in the village Balaban in the town of Demirköy
in Kırklareli.
In this primary school, there are thirty- five (35) students. The aim of this project is providing
these children have a better education standards and the healthy environment. For example,
the Rotaract Club Istanbul decided to build-up the toilets again because they have too many
unhealthy conditions and also this circumstance is dangerous for the children’s health.
Moreover, these children don’t have a sport hall for playing sports. For this reason we decide
to build a sport hall and also with the club activities we provide all the needs of the children in
this project. Any help is appreciated!
Let us remind you that if you want to get more information about us.

ISTANBUL ISTINYE ROTARACT CLUB
We made periodical visits to Şişli Schizophrenia Club, during these visits we realized that
schizophrenic suffer from false judgements of people in their daliy lives, these judgements
ultimately leads them not having a social life and they become isolated. In order to eliminate
these ideas, we organized an assembly with four different Rotaract Clubs and we tried to
attract attention of the society and Rotaractors to the problems of the schizophrenia.
ISTANBUL ISTINYE ROTARACT CLUB
One of our members-Müge Erbay who is
doing master in Clinical Psychology - made a
presentation about schizophrenia and all
participants listened carefully her.
Furthermore, we have guests; Board
Members of the Şişli Schizophrenia Club, so
we had an opportunity to raise our questions
to them, it provides us an interactive meeting
and moreover it creates a sincere atmosphere.
At the end of the meeting, all participants are
clear about the schizophrenia which is an
indicator that we reached our goal.
We went to the theater regularly with 35
children between the age of 7-12 from The
Educational
Volunteers
Foundation
(TEGV), whose mission provide formal
educational opportunities for children and
youth in need throughout Turkey. Our aim
is to make these small kids get acquainted
with the any type of the art and enhance

with full enthusiasm and apprecciation for the

Origin of World Rotaract Day (March 13th)
The proposal of establishing a "World Rotaract Day", to be celebrated annually by all Rotaractors, was
presented to Rotary International by Derya Sensoy, DRR 1989-90 of District 2420, Turkey, on 23rd
February 1990, by the following letter:
"Being the young generation of the 'Service Above Self' philosophy, we would like a certain day to be
celebrated as 'World Rotaract Day' which would give us a chance for our voice to be heard with a
common activity.
This day will also be an opportunity to make us approach each other sharing the happiness of being
Rotaractors and will motivate us to create new ideas. An activity shared by World Rotaractors will
attract world attention and will enhance recognition of Rotaract. This activity should be at least at
district level and it should have a group activity characteristic such as blood donation, public service
campaigns etc. It should be kept in mind that the higher the rate of participation, the more successful
the activity.
On the other hand, a declaration by the President of Rotary International about that day emphasising
the humanist side of Rotaract and stating its philosophy will play an active role in the development of
the Rotaract programme. Moreover, it is important for the recognition of Rotaract to prepare a bulletin
about the activities undertaken and to distribute it to related institutions, local authorities and the Press.
Based on the foregoing facts, we are requesting RI to accept the foundation day of the first Rotaract
Club as the official "World Rotaract Day" and to celebrate it each year."
This proposal was brought to the attention of all Rotaract Clubs as one of the "Items for
Consideration" prepared by the 1990-91 Rotary International Rotaract Committee (Group II, item 11).
Following the discussions of Rotaractors, the proposal was put forward by the RI Rotaract Committee
as a recommendation.
Then, after the Rotary Convention held in Mexico in June 1991, the Board of Directors of RI approved
this proposal as a project to be implemented. And in 1993, due to the 25th anniversary of the Rotaract
Program, World Rotaract Day was extended to World Rotaract Week.
