Located at the Old Soul Rod Shop, south of Leroy, NY, and north of Pavilion, NY, this is a great “out of the way” location for a party that may get a little rowdy. Even though the event is open to everyone, shop owner Jesse Coots said, “ If you want to park with the cruisers your vehicle must be a pre-1962 hotrod, gasser, traditional rods, custom or bike”. I did note a few exceptions but they had the right coolness and patina, but there were no modern muscle on the grounds, just vintage iron. But don’t worry; if you still want to attend, there is plenty of parking across the street. Your $15.00 per person admission gets you a great chicken BBQ. There were plenty of volunteers manning the BBQ to feed the cruisers. 4 Show and Cruise News (continued on page 6) THE BATTERY STORE Hardcore Happening (continued from page 4) 6 Show and Cruise News Hardcore Happening (continued on page 12) Show and Cruise News 7 8 Show and Cruise News by John Dumbrosky S o how about that N ove m b e r, D e c e m b e r weather? After having our butts kicked for two winters in a row this has been a treat. Instead of fighting piles of snow and single digit temps I took the roadster for an afternoon ride on December 9th. That’s a pretty late date for any Western New York resident to be cruising in an open car enjoying clear dry roads, sunshine and 50 degree temps. Yeah Baby! I hope everyone enjoyed the holidays. I find that as I get older there are loved ones missing from the Thanksgiving table and that saddens me. But my heart is soothed somewhat by seeing the faces of the young folks moving from the “kids table” to the adult group. The passing of the generations is a theme that has hit home for me a lot lately. Not that long ago our car club was suffering a bit of an identity crisis. Some unhappy members made the accusation that we never did anything. I guess participating in dozens of car shows with award-winning displays over the last thirty years, hosting a large annual outdoor swap meet, having a yearly club picnic and Christmas party, having small groups of members attend cruise nights all over the Niagara Frontier and scheduling two meetings every month doesn’t amount to much in some people’s eyes. That was a pretty easy charge to dismiss. But another statement hit home. We were a “club of old men.” As I looked around the room it was true. Thirty-seven years ago when the club was first formed we were a club of young men. As a result of our continued success we lasted longer than most clubs and kept most of our members over those years. Because of the dissension we looked at our reason for being and decided it wasn’t about members. It was about passion for hot rod and custom cars that we shared. We decided better to have 18 members with a common interest than 30 guys who didn’t feel the passion and if that means we don’t get many new members so what. By the way, we do have one member under 40. The passing of generations is playing out on the big stage too. The “King of the Kustomizers,” George Barris, passed recently. He was there at the beginning, one of the originators. Actually, George and his brother Sam picked up the torch and continued the heritage of coach building that had flourished in the 1930’s. Hollywood had Bohman & Schwartz, Don Lee and Darrin building high-end luxury custom cars for movie stars and business moguls. By the 1950’s a new generation was bringing enhanced styling to every man by transforming common Chevrolets and Fords into rolling sculptures. George Barris contemporaries, the Ayala Brothers, Dean Jeffries, and Valley Customs were the youngsters taking the craft forward. George was a lasting link to those artists. I had the privilege of meeting George twice in my life. The first time was at the “Cavalcade of Cars.” He was enjoying the show and presented the awards. I got to shake his hand and briefly chat with him as he presented my ‘50 Pontiac Custom with “Best Interior” award. Being that I grew up building model cars of “Barris Kustoms” and seeing those TV cars created by George, it was a bit of a big deal to me to shake the man’s hand. The next time I saw him was at the Concours ‘D Elegance at the Glenmore Country Club in Canton, Ohio. It seem the Concours folks were realizing that fine coach work wasn’t confined to pre WWll automobiles so the “Hirohata Merc” and the “Polynesian” were invited to participate. They made a big splash and George Barris was on hand to speak at the presentation ceremony. During part of the day he rode the grounds in a golf cart stopping and chatting with folks and obviously having a hell of a good time. I got my chance to say hello and mentioned the Hamburg, “Cavalcade.” He remembered and said some very kind things about the show and the city. For over 60 years George Barris owned the World of Kustom Kars. He was a great among many. Gone are Ed “Big Daddy” Roth, Von Dutch, Dean Jeffries and now the “King of the Kustomizers” himself. There is a new generation that is continuing the tradition and taking it into the new century. Two of my favorites are the works of Chip Foose and Rick Dore. Now they and many like them are carrying the torch forward. Sooner or later our time comes. Eventually we get to move up from the kids table and, God willing we may live long enough to sit at the head. When we do and we remember those who have come and gone, it is good to see there are those coming up, ready to take their place. Until next time, I’ll be out in the garage. Show and Cruise News 9 SNOWBUSTERS 2015 photos by Gary Swiatowy Hamburg, NY T he winter of 2014-2015 was one of the longest, snowiest and most miserable on record, especially February. For the car enthusiast, unless you vacate the area for warmer climates, it really puts a damper on the car activities. Thank goodness, in the middle of winter there are a couple of events that go on to help us keep our sanity. One of the events is the SnowBusters Swap Meet held at the Event Center at The Fairgrounds in Hamburg, NY. Vendors fill this building to capacity with anything and everything a car person would want, from parts, tools, toys and memorabilia, giving the enthusiast an escape from the winter blues. Hosted by the Model A Restorers Club, this event has grown over the years to the point they needed a venue the size of the Event Center to accommodate the number of vendors and participants they get. I have to hand it to the vendors who dragged everything into the Event Center in hopes of finding a person to buy from them. This year’s event will be Sunday February 7th (see ad on page 30), and no matter what the weather you can believe there will be plenty of vendors and spectators to buy what they bring. And just four weeks after that is the kick off to spring with the 23rd Annual “Cavalcade of Cars” show at The Event Center. It’s already shaping up to be another great show with plenty of cars and packed with auto-related vendors. See you at the SnowBusters on Feb 7th. 10 Show and Cruise News (continued on page 13) Hardcore Happening (continued from page 7) 12 Show and Cruise News SNOWBUSTERS 2015 (continued from page 10) Show and Cruise News 13 WEST SENECA PBA CAR SHOW 2015 by Gary Swiatowy West Seneca, NY I t looks like the West Seneca PBA Car Show has found a permanent home at the West Seneca Town Hall grounds on Union Road. Formerly held at the Southgate Plaza for many years, the Sunday of Labor Day weekend, being on grass with a lot of shade trees, instead of blacktop was held on one of the hottest days of the summer. This move was a win, win move. The show appeared to be a huge success because the grounds were fairly full. And what a brilliant idea it was to have the ”Taste of West Seneca” on the grounds at the same time. There were plenty of local food vendors with a great variety available. And the best part was the prices. Much more reasonable than other “Taste Of’s” I’ve attended this summer There were a lot of new rides I haven’t seen before as well as the usual supporters of the West Seneca Police Benevolent Association, which uses the money for their scholarship fund. Again a win win. 14 Show and Cruise News (continued on page 16) CORVETTES LARRY LEWIS OWNER & Performance Specialties • QUALITY PAINTING & MECHANICAL REPAIRS • INSURANCE CLAIMS • FRAME STRAIGHTENING • RESTORATION SERVICE AVAILABLE • S/S BRAKE CALIPER DEALER • NEW & USED GM CORVETTE PARTS FREE ESTIMATES 688-8765 5895 TRANSIT RD., E. George Barris passed away in November at the age of 89, less than two weeks short of his 90th birthday. sent photos back to us that he took at the “Cavalcade” for our scrapbook, and I always enjoyed his Christmas cards. He was even creative with those. I know that no one lives forever, but when you leave a legacy like George Barris did, he will always live on. R.I.P. George, we will miss you. Barris, who created the original “Batmobile” for the television series helped define California’s car culture. His pioneering work designing customized cars made him an influential figure for car clubs and hot rod enthusiasts. At his funeral there was a parade of “Kustom” cars and leading the parade was a customized hearse designed by Barris, carrying his custom painted gold casket. Born in Chicago to Greek immigrant parents, George also had an older brother Sam. In 1928 his mother died and his father had to make a heart wrenching decision to send the boys to live with their aunt and uncle John and Edith Barakaris in California. About the time the boys went to live with them, they had Americanized their name to “Barris”. The Barris Brothers started their customizing careers with an old 1925 Buick given to them from their adoptive parents as a reward for their work in the family restaurant. This became the first of the “Barris Kustoms.” They sold it to a private owner and the customizing business took off. They also created a club for owners of custom vehicles and the “Kustom Car Club” was born. This was the first use of the spelling “Kustom” which would be associated with Barris. Best known for Ala Kart, Batmobile and the Munster Couch, the Barris Brothers designed and built hundreds of Kustoms, mostly for private owners, and some reached the silver screen. George Barris was, is, and will always be an icon in the industry as he not only created cars he and his brother built, he helped others learn and grow with the industry he was so passionate about. The “Cavalcade of Cars” had close ties to George as we were honored to have him and two of the cars he designed for Jerry Kind of New Jersey at our show. They were here twice, once with each vehicle as they were completed, and true to George Barris fashion, he spent the entire weekend talking to people, signing autographs, taking pictures and signing dash boards and other interior parts of some of the cars in the show. Of all the celebs we brought to the show, George was one of the most personable. He always 18 Show and Cruise News Cavalcade 2016 Here is just a quick update on the “Cavalcade” Show March 4-6, 2016. Things are falling into place rather nicely. We have new builds coming in from Ohio, Pennsylvania, and New York State. We’re still waiting on info on a real cool new ‘37 Cabriolet from Canada. Car related vendors are sending their applications in so I know we will have a good variety as we do every year. Our local builders are also preparing new builds as we speak, and we are getting a strong representation from the Rochester area with cars not seen in WNY. Entertainment is falling into place, so all in all the 2016 “Cavalcade of Cars” is coming together real nice. Remember our motto “No Stars, just GREAT CARS.” Family priced, FREE parking, still the best show in town. The grounds are a perfect venue for a show of this nature as many of the participants are tractor trailers. But there is something for everyone from the big rigs to garden tractors and even a Crosley pick-up. I go to many shows throughout the year, but coming to an event of this nature is always a unique experience. There were tractor pulls, vendors, great food at affordable prices. And one thing that they do that is refreshing is in the middle of the day, they pick several vehicles, have them parade by a viewing tent and their owners are interviewed about their vehicle. Awards are given out on Sunday, but the participants are there for both days. The dates for the 2016 show are August 6th & 7th at the Stafford Fire Company Grounds on Route 5, two miles from Batavia, NY. By Tara Hurlin - Writer/Editor for Hagerty Insurance A Krash Course on Life with Hot Rods The garage is a place where boys become men; it’s where they learn to cuss, spit and siphon gas, and it’s where they learn how to keep their cars on the road all by themselves. A large chunk of Krash Vegas’ childhood was spent in the garage with his dad who grew up in the era when the 1932 Ford was —and still is to most — the crown jewel of hot rods. On the other hand, being from a different time, Krash still believes that a Hemi Road Runner is king, and every car he ever drew as a kid had the number 43 on the door. “My dad is the one responsible — or to blame — for my car addiction. He is the whole reason I ever learned anything about cars,” Krash said. “Dad would always say, ‘If you’re going to own it, you better know how to fix it.’ That is how it worked at our house.” Krash recalls spending weekends at home due to a broken down car on more than one occasion. For as long as he can remember, Krash wanted a threewindow coupe: a 1941 Willys, 1939 Zephyr or a 1932 ‘36 Ford, it didn’t really matter — he just knew that there was something special about them. He had been busting his knuckles on a 1957 Chevrolet pro street project, which was the result of a trade. “I got the short end of the stick in that deal,” said Krash. After nearly two years and almost every piece of sheet metal replaced, Krash was finally about to be on the road. In the midst of the early morning darkness and with the headers wide open, he managed to find his way to the muffler shop through the back roads and waited for them to open. Just as the Chevy was halfway up the lift, his phone rang. It was his dad, and he happened to be standing in a random field ogling over the remnants of a 1936 Ford three-window coupe. It had no floor or frame, the firewall and cowl had been butchered, and the body was rotted 6-inches up all the way around. “It was perfect,” Krash exclaimed. After he overcame a brief case of sticker shock, he told his dad he would pay the price, and he would sell the Chevy to help fund the project. It only took a few phone calls and the Chevy was sold before it came down off the lift. Krash took it for one last drive from the muffler shop to the new owner’s house. “Dad works faster than anyone when it comes to locating parts,” Krash said. He had located a mostly complete 1935 fourdoor sedan donor car within a week. A few more phone calls yielded a shopping list, and then Krash was on the phone with every parts house in the country as he watched his stack of cash from the 1957 Chevy sale wither away. Krash’s dad wasn’t only a parts finding guru; he wasted no time in sawing off the four-door sedan’s body so the coupe could have a new cowl and floor. The running boards and front end from the four-door completed the coupe’s missing pieces, and soon it was rolling freely on a triangulated four-link Ford Granada rearend and a Mustang II front end. As more parts arrived, it was decided that a 427-cid tall-deck big-block Chevy engine would be the power plant; it fit nicely in the engine compartment. The new 28 Show and Cruise News engine and rear tail pan made the old coupe look complete again. With the car up on four wheels and all the grueling dirty work done, it was time for Krash to jump in and get the beast roadready. He needed to have the wheels and tires on to get a grasp on the inspiration to keep going. “If I lose the vision, I lose the inspiration to keep working,” he said. So, the first order of business was to call Wheel Vintiques. “They were super helpful and asked for progress photos of the old coupe, and I was happy to oblige,” Krash said, “I love to take progress pictures of my cars.” Since Krash’s dad regularly made a point of hitting the Pomona swap meets as often as possible, Krash decided to tag along and search for an intake for the 427. “After spending the night in a sleeping bag on the wood floor of an enclosed car trailer with a few other snoring geezers, the hunt proved successful and I found exactly what I was looking for,” he said. Finally back home and with the new intake installed, it was almost time to take the car out for the maiden voyage to its first local meet in Dallas, Texas. As it turned out, dear ol’ Dad found a 1936 Ford three-window coupe project just a few weeks before the meet, so he decided to make the trip down. There they were, one 1935 three-window and one 1936 three-window sitting side-by-side in the blazing Texas sun. They drew quite a crowd, and while the 1936 with the original flathead engine was for sale, Krash’s BBC powered 1935 was not. “This ‘not for sale’ thing didn’t seem to register with one particular gentleman who continually decided to harass me about a price,” said Krash. He kindly explained that the car was not for sale because it was a childhood dream and a sentimental father/ son project, and he just couldn’t part with it. “He still did not understand the attachment that we car people have to our vehicles,” Krash said. “I finally quoted a price that was so unreasonable that he stomped a w a y, v e r y upset.” (continued on page 31) Show and Cruise News 29 30 Show and Cruise News WHAT DRIVES Y U? (continued from page 28) Later that same day, Krash’s dad sold his 1936 Ford. Ironically on the way home, Krash’s 1935 had an electric fan relay failure that caused it to overheat and blow the upper radiator hose off the intake manifold. It happened in just a matter of seconds, leaving them stranded on the side of the road. To top it off, Krash had to listen to his dad say in a matter-of-fact way; “Betcha wish you would have sold it now, right boy?” A few months later, the phone rang and someone asked Krash what he did to get his car in the magazine. “I had no idea what they were talking about and immediately ran out to pick up my copy of Traditional Rod and Kustom, and sure enough there was my coupe taking up a half of a page,” Krash exclaimed. “I have no idea who, how or why the good people at Vintiques decided that it was my car that they would use, but I will always be happy that someone else liked it enough to publish it. They ran that ad for several issues and I felt like a rock star every time it came out.” Krash eventually sold the 1935 Ford coupe. “I’ve always regretted it and always will,” Krash said mournfully. He has had a few car projects since then, and is currently working on a 1939 Studebaker President five-window. “It’s getting a Desoto Hemi engine that I convinced dear ol’ Dad to part with,” Krash said. “It’s just too bad I can’t get him to put it in this time.” UPCOMING EVENTS JAN 17, 2016 - CLUTCH ARTISTS' 2016 CALENDAR OF EVENTS PLANNING MEETING FEB 7 - 15th ANNUAL SNOW BUSTER AUTOMOTIVE SWAP MEET - Event Center at The Fairgrounds at Hamburg, NY, 5820 South Park Ave., Hamburg, NY. 9am-3pm.
