Horns
A Devilish
Disguise:
Daniel Radcliffe
Grows Horns
W
hat would you do if you had the power to discover
the secrets of everyone you met? Make mischief?
Or perhaps use it to hunt down the culprit of a
horrible murder?
The latest feature from horror movie master Alexandre
Aja (The Hills Have Eyes, Piranha 3D), Horns tells the
story of a young man who wakes up one morning to
discover that he has sprouted demonic-looking horns,
and with them, gained strange supernatural abilities that
allow him to compel others to confess their sins.
To the town of Gideon, New Hampshire, it seems as
though young Ignatius “Ig” Perrish has it all: wealth, status,
security and a serious girlfriend, all at the tender age of 26.
The child of a popular musician and a late-night TV star, Ig
has a bright future ahead of him – that is until, in a perverse
twist of fate, his girlfriend Merrin is brutally raped and
murdered, leaving Ig himself as prime suspect. Thanks to
his connections, Ig is never formally tried or sentenced.
Unfortunately, however, this means his innocence is never
proven. His guilt assumed, Ig begins a life of misery and
isolation, shunned by a community who view him as
a monster.
Beset by grief and falling to pieces under the pressure
of the town’s disgust, Ig falls into a downward spiral of
drink and depression. After one particularly wild and
turbulent night he wakes up with horns protruding from
his head and no memory of how they came to be there.
At first, the folk of Gideon believe them to be an outward
manifestation of his inner evil, but before long, Ig realises
that they have conferred on him the power to discover
others’ guilt.
Driven by anger and despair, the once good-natured Ig
now has a means of seeking revenge on those who made
his life a living hell. By using his newfound abilities, he
begins the difficult search for Merrin’s true murderer: but
6
Horns
will this discovery be enough to restore Ig’s good name?
Or will his startling power and thirst for vengeance
ultimately consume him?
Fast establishing himself as one of Hollywood’s finest
young talents, Daniel Radcliffe stars as the film’s antihero,
marking his second venture into the supernatural horror
genre after 2012’s The Woman in Black. In an interview
with the Guardian, Radcliffe
described the role as “a very
very different type of part [to]
anything I’ve done before,”
though this could equally be
said for almost every other
character he’s lately played.
In addition to the movies
already mentioned, Radcliffe
has recently starred as 1940s
beat poet Alan Ginsberg in
Kill Your Darlings, as well as
sharing the title part with John
Hamm in A Young Doctor’s
Notebook. Next year, he’ll be
seen playing hunchbacked
lab assistant Igor in a new film version of Mary Shelley’s
Frankenstein, demonstrating his impressive versatility
as an actor. At this October’s MCM London Comic Con,
we’re sure that you’ll be thrilled to welcome him to the
stage to discuss his current projects and the nature of life
post-Potter.
Co-starring in the film as the ill-fated Merrin is rising
star Juno Temple (The Dark Knight Rises, Maleficent),
fresh from appearing as Sally in Sin City: A Dame to Kill
For. She’s joined by Max Minghella (The Social Network,
The Internship) as Lee Tourneau, Joe Anderson (The
Divide, Becoming Jane, The Twilight Saga: Breaking
Dawn – Part 2) as Terry Perrish, James Remar (The
Vampire Diaries, Dexter, Sex and the City) as Derrick
Perrish and Kelli Garner (Pan Am, The Aviator) as Glenna.
Based on the book of the same name by bestselling author Joe Hill, this delightfully devilish title will
be unleashed on cinemas this month, just in time for
Halloween. As the son of
world-class genre novelist
Stephen King, Hill’s interest
in horror was likely sparked
from a young age, but after
publishing a number of
acclaimed novels, short
stories and comics in his own
right, his talents have now
been deservedly recognised,
independent of his father’s
success. He also served as an
executive producer on Horns.
Last year it was announced
that a film trilogy based on
his Eisner and British Fantasy
Award-winning comic series Locke & Key (illustrated
by Gabriel Rodriguez) would be produced by longterm collaborators Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci for
Universal Pictures. So we may see more of Hill’s work on
screen in the future.
Featuring a fabulous soundtrack that includes music
from the likes of David Bowie, The Pixies, Eels, Marilyn
Manson and The Flaming Lips, Horns will be released
in the UK on 29 October, so be sure to have your
Halloween costume ready for a cinema trip!

Monsters Dark Continent
F
rom executive producer Gareth Edwards [Godzilla,
Monsters], Monsters Dark Continent is the debut
feature from Tom Green [Misfits], the much
anticipated follow up to 2010’s smash hit Monsters.
Monsters Dark Continent stars Johnny Harris
(Welcome to the Punch, ‘This is England’ series, London
To Brighton), Sam Keeley (forthcoming Ron Howard
feature Heart of The Sea), Joe Dempsie (‘Game of
Thrones’, ‘Skins’), Kyle Soller (Anna Karenina), Parker
Sawyers (Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit) and Nicholas
Pinnock (Captain America: The First Avenger). The
screenplay is written by Jay Basu and Tom Green.
The film takes place ten years on from the original ,
with the ‘Infected Zones’ now spread worldwide. In the
Middle East a new insurgency has begun. At the same
time there has also been a proliferation of Monsters in
that region. The Army decide to draft in more numbers
to help deal with this insurgency. We follow four fresh
new recruits from Detroit as they all excitedly look
forward to performing what they were trained to do.
Killing Monsters. At first it all seems like a game to them
but things quickly change when they are given a special
mission: to rescue five soldiers who have been lost deep
in the Infected Zone. The main focus of their mission is
human but they are instructed to take down any creatures
that get in the way along the route.
Venturing deep into the IZ, the young troops embark
on a life-altering mission through the heart of monster
territory. By the time they reach their goal, they will have
been forced to confront themselves with the true horrors
of eradicating the alien threat.
Not only are Tom Green, Johnny Harris and Joe
Dempsie hosting a panel at 12:00 on Saturday 25
October, but Monsters Dark Continent will be located in

Under the Dome
T
his year, cast members from the hit CBS show
Under the Dome will once again be appearing at
MCM London Comic Con. This October, we’re
lucky enough to be joined by MCM newcomers Grace
Victoria Cox and Aisha Hinds as well as returning guest
Mackenzie Lintz, who will arrive just as the second
season comes to an end in the United Kingdom.
If you’re not yet familiar with the show, Under the Dome is
based on the 2009 Stephen King novel of the same name,
and is produced by the American television network CBS.
It was adapted for TV by Brian K. Vaughan, who previously
worked as a writer and producer on the hit series Lost.
The story takes place in Maine, Stephen King’s
beloved home state, and focuses on residents of a
fictional town called Chester’s Mill. The inhabitants
suddenly find themselves caught beneath a mysterious,
clear, spherical force field, leaving them trapped in while
the rest of civilisation is locked out and left to look on.
Under the Dome originally aired on CBS in June
2013, with a hugely entertaining pilot episode featuring
stunning visual effects of trucks and aeroplanes colliding
with the invisible dome. One of the more notable special
effects, often used in weekly recaps, sees a cow being
cut in half by the dome when it first lands: it might well
remind you of a sculpture straight out of a Damien Hirst
exhibition. When the viewing figures for the pilot were
later revealed, it was estimated to have pulled in over 13.5
million viewers, smashing CBS records.
The show’s stellar cast is made up of top tier talent
such as Mike Vogel (Cloverfield, The Help), who plays
10
Under the Dome
appearing as the female tribute for District 8 in the 74th
Hunger Games. Aisha Hinds’ TV work prior to Under
the Dome includes roles in Detroit 1-8-7, Dollhouse and
even a brief appearance in Prison Break. True Blood fans
may remember her as the scamming witch doctor Miss
Jeanette who, in Season One, performed an exorcism on
Tara (Rutina Wesley). Hinds also appeared in J.J. Abrams’
Star Trek: Into Darkness as Navigation Officer Darwin.
She also more recently has had a recurring role on the
current series of NCIS Los Angeles as a no nonsense
Department of Justice Agent who is conducting an
investigation into the NCIS LA team.
Meanwhile, having joined the cast in Season Two,
Grace Victoria Cox will be making her first MCM Comic
Con appearance this year. Cox plays mysterious
teenager Melanie Cross, whose first appearance in the
show sees her drowning in the middle of a lake, when
she is luckily saved by Julia Shumway. Her involvement
in the second season is crucial and we’re led to believe
if anyone gets in her way, heads will roll, but that’s as
much as we’re saying at this point. Fans of her character
may be surprised to hear that Under the Dome is actually
Grace’s first acting credit. She moved to Los Angeles
in 2012 to pursue her acting career after completing her
junior year in high school, majoring in the Theatre of Arts.
Under the Dome is the perfect suspense drama for
fans of Lost, with the two series sharing many similarities.
Both are filled with great twists, cliff-hanger endings and
some interesting supernatural elements, and then, of
course, there’s the fact that being trapped under a dome
is rather like being stuck on an island. Perhaps then,
Under the Dome can serve as a kind of remedy for those
missing Lost and its isolated island.
Under the Dome Season Two is currently airing on
Monday nights at 10pm on Channel 5. You can also catch
up with the first season via Amazon Prime Instant Video.
the lead character, Dale “Barbie” Barbara, and Dean
Norris (Breaking Bad, Little Miss Sunshine) who plays
Selectman James ‘Big Jim’ Rennie, a role that puts him
in charge of running Chester’s Mill. Rachelle Lefevre
takes up the mantle of the series’ leading lady, playing
discredited journalist Julia Shumway.
The second season of the show has already finished
airing in the US and is now coming to an end on UK
TV. For those who aren’t yet up-to-date with the series,
we won’t ruin it with any spoilers, but fans should rest
assured that the return to Chester’s Mill offers plenty of
exciting scenarios and shocking plot twists! For those
who are up-to-date, CBS have announced recently that
the show will return next summer for its third season.
Making her second MCM London Comic Con
appearance this weekend will be Mackenzie Lintz, whose
passive-aggressive, teenage character Norrie Calvet-Hill
played a key role in Season One. We’ll also be joined by
Aisha Hinds, who plays Carolyn Hill, a workaholic lawyer
and one of Norrie’s two mothers. Together with her partner,
Alice Calvet (played by Samantha Mathis), Carolyn struggles
to raise her daughter at this difficult time in their lives.
Before working on Under the Dome, Lintz also starred
in the first instalment of The Hunger Games trilogy,
Stewart Sutherland

Extraterrestrial
R
eleased in UK cinemas on October 29th comes
Extraterrestrial from the Canadian filmmaking duo,
the Vicious Brothers, Colin Minihan and Stuart Ortiz.
Having written and produced both Grave Encounters
and its sequel, this latest feature film is much bigger and
marks the return to directing for Minihan, whilst Ortiz
focused on writing and production.
A gripping sci-fi horror film, Extraterrestrial sees what
happens when a quiet retreat to the woods turns awry
following an intrusion by unwelcome aliens.
April (Brittany Allen) is looking to spend a romantic
weekend away at her parents cabin in the woods before
it is sold as part of their divorce. Looking to escape the
drama in her home life being caused by the divorce,
she is dismayed when she finds that her boyfriend Kyle
(Freddie Stroma) has invited several of his friends to party
in the woods. The old cabin provides many comforting
childhood memories for April, who tries to settle in and
enjoy the weekend. Despite the turn of events, she plans
to use the weekend to break some important news to her
boyfriend, who unbeknownst to her also has big plans for
the two of them.
Things take a sinister turn when a mysterious fireball
suddenly appears in the night sky, falling to earth. Appearing
to be a meteorite, the object crashes to the ground and
explodes in the nearby woods. Leading April and the other
partygoers into the woods, Kyle seeks to find out where the
object landed, curious to know what it might be.
Investigating only serves to make things worse though.
After arriving at the crash site they find a wrecked space
12
Extraterrestrial
ship from another world alongside mysterious footprints.
It isn’t long before they find that one of the survivors,
an alien, is observing them. After a brief struggle they
manage to kill the alien, only to find that there was
more than one survivor from the crashed ship, and the
death of their crewmate prompts a series of attacks by
the mysterious creatures. But even with the new alien
menace hanging over them, not all is as at seems, and
it’s not long before the college students are fighting to
survive, whilst finding themselves embroiled in something
that goes beyond what they could have expected.
Extraterrestrial has already played a few of the
festivals, having debuted in the USA and Germany at the
Tribeca Film Festival and Fantasy Filmfest respectively.
As well as being fans of The X-Files, the Vicious Brothers
took inspiration from classic sci-fi alien movies, and
wanted to create a movie that pokes fun at the various
clichés of classic B-movies, but still presents itself in a
serious tone.
“Basically, we thought that nobody had done a movie
that played on the tropes of alien abduction and actually
done it in a really terrifying manner.” explains Minihan.
When it comes to alien abduction films, he also admitted
to having been freaked out by the sci-fi film Fire in the
Sky when he saw it as a child. “I think that the unknown,
just like ghosts, it’s the unknown that’s scary.”
“We kinda believe that this is a real thing, actually,
and so I think that it’s a lot more horrifying as a result,”
adds Ortiz.
In wanting to make the film a more character driven
story the focus is on April, a young girl trying to find some
peace from her own turmoil only to get mixed up in the
tumultuous events. Played by Daytime Emmy Award
winning actress Brittany Allen, she is known for her work
on All My Children and the Defiance TV show.
“She’s a very strong girl, and she was going through
something that I could relate to,” explains Allen about
her character. “She begins the film with her heart very
closed off, and then one horrific night she begins to peel
back the layers and open up, and I have had a similar
experience myself in the last year. I think that she’s a
good role model for girls; she’s very strong.”
Joining her as her boyfriend Kyle is Freddie Stroma of
Harry Potter, and Pitch Perfect fame. Also co-starring
is Melanie Papalia as one of the friends that Kyle invites
to the party. Jesse Moss playing Seth rounds out the
group, bringing his wealth of movie acting experience to
the project.
Extraterrestrial finally lands in the UK on 29 October.

Teen Wolf
W
ith supernatural juggernauts such as The Vampire
Diaries and American Horror Story making their
mark in this new generation of television, Teen
Wolf was the perfect candidate to join the collection of
excellent supernatural dramas.
Taking inspiration from the 1985 film Teen Wolf, this
MTV produced show is packed with thrills and excitement.
With a fifth season well on the way, Teen Wolf has already
received much praise and success, with the season four
finale netting over 1.4 million viewers in the US.
Created by writer Jeff Davis (Criminal Minds), Teen
Wolf follows teenage werewolf Scott McCall (Tyler Posey),
and the trials and tribulations he faces as he attempts to
juggle a normal teenage life with his newfound abilities.
Prior to becoming a werewolf Scott lacked any athletic
ability, suffered from asthma and was far from someone
who was accustomed to popularity. After he and his best
friend Stiles (Dylan O’Brien) sneak on to a suspected
murder scene in their hometown Beacon Hills, Scott is
bitten by a werewolf. His life completely changes to a
point where he has newfound abilities, no longer has
asthma and is a superb athlete.
Stiles is Scott’s best friend, and they both have a
brotherly relationship. Stiles is often a character who
is very important to Scott in more ways than one. His
intelligence often allows for many of the mysteries in
the series to become solved. His personality is that of
a geek and he also has some comedic and sarcastic
quirks. He is the son of Sheriff Stilinski (Linden Ashby), so
this often allows him to get information on many cases,
unknowingly to his father. Whilst Stiles really comes
into his own as a character, he is seen as a Robin to
Scott’s Batman.
One thing the Teen Wolf series really places an
emphasis on is the whole ‘coming of age’ concept.
As Tyler Posey explains, “becoming a werewolf is a
metaphor for becoming a man”. This is really put forth
and shown to us as we travel with Scott McCall and
see him develop from a teenager into a young man.
However, it is not only in Scott that we see the coming
of age concept. We see it in more recent characters
such as Kira Yukimura (Arden Cho), Malia Tate (Shelley
15
Teen Wolf
Hennig) and Liam Dunbar (Dylan Sprayberry). These
are characters that have been introduced in the third
and fourth season, with Kira being a ‘kitsune’ as well as
Scott’s new love interest. Malia is a were-coyote, and
the love interest of Stiles. And finally Liam is a werewolf,
and Scott’s beta at that.
When we are first introduced to Kira Yukimura it is in the
third season, in the episode titled ‘Anchors’. She is a new
student, as well as the daughter of the history teacher, who
publicly embarrasses her by introducing her, even revealing
that she has a crush (who we learn is Scott). Whilst Kira
is a new main character, she also is the love interest for
Scott. Kira differs from Scott’s former girlfriend Alison
Argent in many ways. It seems Allison developed
a much colder personality, whereas Kira is the
opposite of what Allison has become, with a hint of
goofiness. As the series progresses we gauge more
of a backstory for Kira, her abilities and we also see
her assimilation into the core cast.
Liam Dunbar arrives on the show as a transfer
freshman to Beacon Hills. One feature that stands
out about him is that he is an exceptional athlete,
especially when it comes to the lacrosse field - a
skill which seems to threaten Scott’s own. However,
with that skill comes an issue; Liam has Intermittent
Explosive Disorder, which means that he often
has repeated happenings of violent behaviour and
aggressive outbursts. When Liam finds himself in
trouble, Scott has to forcefully bite him to save his
life. This begins a change in Liam, which seems to be
a cycle of Scott’s relationship with Derek. However
Liam and Scott’s personality differ. While we see that
Liam is remorseful, he isn’t quite ready to become
a ‘hero’, and in a sense we see him searching
for himself. As the show progresses, Liam
becomes almost like a little brother
to Scott.
Being such an intense show with a
collective of interesting and diverse
characters, there’s always a talented
showrunner behind the project. Teen
Wolf’s happens to be Jeff Davis, who
is very involved with the series. Before
developing the show, Jeff was coexecutive producer for the first season
of Criminal Minds, which was an idea
he sold to CBS Television. His next
project then became Teen Wolf for
which he serves as a producer and
writer. Using mythology from various
cultures, as well as the use of familiar
and unfamiliar symbols, Jeff keeps Teen
Wolf interesting, with a collection of
jaw-dropping scenes and action.
Teen Wolf doesn’t fall into the usual
television stereotypes that you would
expect. The show is packed with many
complex characters, with different
ethnicity, sexuality and gender for
the audience to relate to. It also
does a marvellous job of delivering a
consistently good story.
Teen Wolf is currently available on DVD,
iTunes, and Amazon Prime.

Purgatory
T
he fantasy genre is really brewing, and a new,
exciting addition to that pot is the movie Welcome
to Purgatory, which is currently in pre-production.
Welcome To Purgatory follows three strangers who die
in a terrible accident, and consequently awake and find
themselves in purgatory. However, the gates of heaven
and hell have been broken, and these three strangers
must find a way to rectify the situation to prevent an
eternal battle between good and evil.
To find out more about the exciting project we spoke to
the director of the film, Gene Fallaize.
wraps. What can you tell us about the film?
Welcome To Purgatory is an action/adventure/fantasy
movie about three strangers who die in a terrible train
crash and awake to find themselves in Purgatory. They
are greeted by the trusty Guardian Paul, who is tasked
to lead them to their ultimate destinations – Heaven or
Hell. On their journey, however, they discover that the
boundaries of Hell have been broken and all its evil has
escaped and is destroying the Afterlife. So these three
new arrivals must not only adapt to being dead, and that
Heaven is now in ruins, but with the help of Guardian Paul
they take it upon themselves to try and make things right
again, only to find they’ve become the main target of the
evil Shaitan King.
Whilst Welcome to Purgatory has been gaining some
buzz, information on the project has been under
How did the idea for Welcome to Purgatory come
to pass?
Marcus Ako came up with the original idea whilst on a
train at Waterloo Station, and wrote a first draft which
formed the basis of some of the final script. Myself and
Tony Cook, along with Scott Spiegel (Evil Dead II, Hostel
I-III) revised the script to its final shooting draft.
Whilst it can be inferred that Welcome to Purgatory
will be action packed, you also have comedic actors
such as Bruce Campbell and James Buckley starring
in the film. What can you tell us about the tone of
the film?
It is totally an action/adventure movie, with dangers and
perils that are truly frightening, in a place where if you
found yourself there with no way of ever going back,
you’d be faced with the possibility of an eternal hell.
So the adventure comes from the desire of our main
characters to be in a place that is safe, more like the
ideal image they would have had in their minds of what
it would have been like before they died. It’s certainly
not a kids film, and having horror-master Scotty Spiegel
on board gives an indication that this isn’t going to be
a light movie, but it does have occasional comic relief
from a few characters who break up the tenseness, as
a couple of hours of keeping up the tension in a movie
like this can be tiresome for audiences. The verisimilitude
is really important to me on this project – in my mind as
director everything is real; the characters, the creatures,
the places, so inevitably you would have a mix of
18
Purgatory
personalities too, some that are maybe lighter than
others, which is also why we have these few characters
to break things up.
What can the audience at MCM London Comic Con
expect from the Welcome to Purgatory panel?
We have put together a very special panel for the audience,
including a detailed story overview, and in-person Q&A
session with several members of the cast and crew,
including the lead characters, plus Scott Spiegel and Jack
O’Halloran (Superman I & II). Also we will be screening
an exclusive teaser trailer specially made for Comic Con,
as well as an exclusive animated storyboarded openingscenes preview of the first few minutes of the film, and
video messages for the audience from some of our other
cast, including Bruce Campbell. The highlight however
will be the live in-person announcement that I will make of
our newest cast member who has signed on as Guardian
Paul, who is a legend due to his vast film credits on films
that Comic Con audiences love due to his ability to take
on highly serious and also totally fun roles. He will be
announced live on stage and join us for the Q&A, and the
autograph session that will follow the panel itself.
What was it about these individual actors, which
made them ideal for the film?
Casting is always a tricky blend of getting who is perfect
for the role, and who is going to bring in audiences who
will ultimately pay for getting the movie made. If you can
find someone who ticks both those boxes then that is
casting gold, and we’ve been lucky so far to have found
so many perfect actors for each role. Bruce is obviously a
legend, so we were thrilled when he signed on, the same
with our leads – Jillian Murray as Danni who brings the
girl-next-door aspect, whilst bringing sex-appeal to the
film, Tony Cook who brings an earthly-groundedness
to the character of Taylor, Serena Lorien who brings a
strong-willed determination to the warrioress Nina, and
the actor who is playing the lovable Guardian Paul (who
we are announcing at the MCM London Comic Con
panel) is just brilliant as he’s able to play both the lighter
and more serious aspects of the role just perfectly.
When can we expect to see Welcome to Purgatory
in theatres?
We commence filming at the start of 2015 at Pinewood
Studios, so look out for it in theatres towards the end of
next year.
Are there any plans in place, for spanning the movie
into a franchise?
Yes, Welcome To Purgatory was originally conceived,
written and picked up for production as a trilogy. When I
signed on to direct we adapted the ending so it could be
watched and enjoyed as a standalone film and still make
sense and have a proper story arc, but parts II and III are
currently in production, which will continue the story in a
progressively bigger and more spectacular way. They will
be filmed back-to-back after the release of part I.
The Welcome To Purgatory team will be at MCM London
Comic Con on Saturday 25th October 2014. There will
be a signing, as well as a panel. The panel will consist
of a teaser trailer, video messages, a Q&A and a special
guest announcement which will be an MCM Comic Con
exclusive.

Shinichiro Watanabe
Dandies, Samurai & Space Cowboys
The Anime of
SHINICHIRO
WATANABE
From Cowboy Bebop to Space Dandy,
Shinichiro Watanabe is the man behind
some of the most stylish, interesting and
downright enjoyable anime series out there.
Andrew Osmond takes a closer look at MCM
London Comic Con’s Anime Guest of Honour.
Space Dandy
S
hinichiro Watanabe is known to anime fans
worldwide as the man who made Cowboy Bebop,
one of the most iconic titles in Japanese animation.
Lesser creators would have been tempted to rest on
that reputation. Not Watanabe, who seems determined
to try a bit of everything. He’s made space operas
(Cowboy Bebop, Space Dandy), contemporary action
thrillers (this year’s spectacular Terror In Resonance),
and period dramas set in the recent past (Kids on
the Slope) and in souped-up samurai times (Samurai
Champloo). Intriguingly, Watanabe has said he’d love to
make a western; certainly the Wild West would be ripe
for the genre blending and free-minded characters which
populate the director’s work.
True, Watanabe has spent much time with sciencefiction. He co-directed the lavish romantic SF miniseries
Macross Plus, but it was Cowboy Bebop which put
Watanabe’s name on the map. It’s the laconic, farcical,
hardboiled, existential, melancholy, jazzy saga of Spike
Spiegel, a lanky gunfighter traversing the lawless galaxy
in 2071. As well as the 26-part TV series, Watanabe
also helmed the Cowboy Bebop feature film (subtitled
Knockin’ On Heaven’s Door); this is a ‘midquel,’ set
between parts 22 and 23 of the series. The end of the
series seems definite, although Watanabe has reportedly
teased fans with suggestions that it might not be as
definite as it seems…
Following Cowboy Bebop, Watanabe’s name was well
enough recognised for him to be invited to contribute
to Animatrix, Warner Brothers’ authorised animated
spinoff from The Matrix franchise. We’d dare suggest it’s
much the best of the Matrix sequels. Watanabe directed
two segments, the exciting ‘Kid’s Story’, in which a
skateboarding teenager busts out of his fake reality, and
Cowboy Bebop
Cowboy Bebop
20
Shinichiro Watanabe
Terror
Kids On The Slope
Terror
‘Detective Story’, Watanabe’s own invention. The latter is
a witty SF noir, with obvious overtones of Cowboy Bebop,
and beautifully-shaded monochrome urban backgrounds.
Watanabe followed this by hip-hopping back a few
centuries to Samurai Champloo, a ‘hip’ samurai show. It
often seemed to owe less to bushido than breakdance,
with another lanky, wandering hero and his motley allies.
The word ‘champloo’, Watanabe explained, comes from
an Okinawan word for ‘something mixed’ – the approach
he used not just for Samurai Champloo but also Cowboy
Bebop, which had mixed SF, westerns and film noir with
abandon. As hinted in Bebop’s 2070s setting, Watanabe
has a special fondness for 1970s movies, citing American
directors like Don Siegel (Dirty Harry) and John Carpenter
(especially his early SF comedy Dark Star, which
Watanabe says is an influence on Space Dandy).
Watanabe’s next show after Samurai Champloo was
the delightful teen drama Kids On The Slope, focusing
on the friendship between two music-loving boys in the
1960s. Although the series was adapted from an existing
comic, Watanabe says he felt a personal link to the
material. He told the Anime News Network site that, “Kids
On The Slope is about a good boy and a bad boy coming
together… In my case, I was the good boy, and I found
friendship with the baddest boy in my school.” Rather
than jazz, Watanabe and his delinquent friend bonded
over the group KISS.
That takes us up to Watanabe’s two newest projects,
which push anime to opposite extremes. Space Dandy
is an all-out comedy (Watanabe calls it ‘pure comedy’),
confounding expectations from its first episode. Having
benefited from his credit on the anthology Animatrix,
Watanabe returned the compliment by inviting a great
range of artists to contribute to Space Dandy in their
Space Dandy
Space Dandy
Space Dandy
own very different styles. For example, Sayo Yamamoto,
the rising woman director of Lupin The Third: The Girl
Called Fujiko Mine, directed part 2 of Space Dandy’s first
season and part 7 of the second.
And at the same time, Watanabe brought us the serial
Terror In Resonance, set in a very realistic, hyper-detailed
modern Japan, about two teenagers who go around
blowing up Tokyo. Hey, did we mention Watanabe is a
guy who never rests on his reputation?

Morganville
Mean Girls, Monsters
and Mysterious goings-on:
Welcome to Morganville
W
hen college freshman Claire Danvers begins a
course of study at Morganville’s Texas Prairie
University, she soon becomes frustrated with the
snobby attitudes of the “popular girls” she’s forced to
share a dorm with. She’s an outsider and a nobody, and
they make sure that she’s always aware of it. Seeking out
a better place to stay, Claire heads for a creepy old house
off-campus, already home to three other teenagers –
Shane Collins, Eve Rosser and Michael Glass. Since
smart kid Claire started college early, they’re all a couple
of years older than she is. Though initially reluctant to
welcome her in, they eventually agree to let her stay, and
what Claire discovers next about the town is more than
any first-year college student could have bargained for.
The fictional town of Morganville, Texas (not to be
confused with its real life namesake in New Jersey),
was first introduced to the world back in 2006 with the
publication of young adult novel Glass Houses. Home not
only to TPU but also to an unusual number of secondhand thrift stores, Morganville, as Claire Danvers soon
learns, is in fact populated and controlled by a powerful
group of vampires, headed up by icy elder Amelie and a
puppet human mayor called Richard Morrell.
Written by Rachel Caine, the pen name of awardwinning genre writer Roxanne Longstreet Conrad (The
Weather Warden, Athena Force, Outcast Season) Glass
Houses became the first in a hugely popular series
that spans a total of fifteen novels, the last of which,
Daylighters, was released a little over a year ago. Having
now founded her own small production company, Pen
Ultimate Productions, Caine has begun adapting her
best-selling books into an exciting new web series, set to
22
Morganville
air later this year on Felicia Day’s Geek & Sundry YouTube
channel. Titled simply Morganville, the series will be coproduced by Loud Pictures’ Blake Calhoun, a Streamy
and Webby Award-winning producer whose previous
work includes the series PINK, Exposed, Continuum and
88 HITS, as well as a vampire feature film called Phobia.
At this October’s MCM London Comic Con, we’re
lucky enough to be joined not only by Morganville
Vampires author Rachel Caine, but also by four of the
stars of the show – Lindsay Seidel, Amber Benson,
Robert Picardo and Jordan Farris – for an exclusive
premiere screening of the show.
Taking up the role of the series’ sixteen-year-old
protagonist Claire Danvers, Lindsay Seidel is known
for her anime voice-acting work in Blood-C, Phantom:
Requiem for the Phantom and One Piece: Strong World.
She also stars in horror web series Throwing Stones.
Though initially naïve, her character, Claire, is also
exceptionally intelligent, and develops massively over the
course of the series. After being assigned as an assistant
to mysterious Welsh vampire and ancient alchemist
Myrnin (Chase Ryan Jeffery – Spilt Milk, Exposed, Man
of the House) by Morganville’s immortal founder, Amelie,
Claire gradually begins to earn the grudging respect of
much of the town’s vampire population, as well as making
friends within its human community. Nevertheless,
there are those who continue to dislike her, partly for
her cleverness and partly for her increasingly privileged
status on both sides of the human/vampire divide.
“Ice queen” Amelie, meanwhile, is played by Buffy,
Supernatural and Husbands star Amber Benson. Though
she may look young and pretty, Amelie is over 1,500
years old, and is effectively in control of Morganville.
As her Patron, Amelie develops affection for Claire, and
while she’s generally good at hiding her feelings, it soon
becomes apparent that her feelings for her protégé are
almost maternal. Her second-in-command is fellow
vampire elder Oliver (Robert Picardo - Star Trek: Voyager,
Stargate, The Mentalist), the “Don of the local Morganville
mafia” and owner of the town’s only coffee shop.
Finally, Jordan Farris plays the hot-headed Shane
Collins, Morganville’s resident bad boy and, much to her
parents’ consternation, Claire’s boyfriend. A resident of
Morganville’s Glass House, Shane is initially prejudiced
against all vampires, believing his mother and sister to
have been murdered by some of the Morganville crowd.
However, partly as a result of his relationship with Claire,
Shane slowly comes to accept that not all vampires
are bad, though he continues to struggle to control
his temper and to wrestle with his protective instincts
towards Claire and their friends, Eve (Haileigh Todd Locked) and Michael (Ben Easter – So Little Time, Husk).
Other cast members include Afomia Hailemeskel as
“Queen of Mean” and daughter of the mayor Monica
Morrell; Jessi Mechler (Boyhood, Saving Grace) and Taylor
Murphy as assistant mean girls Gina and Jennifer; Gregory
J. Connors as shady, sinister vampire Brandon and Nikki
Donley (Side FX, Cowboy and Lucky) as Hannah Moses, a
police officer who suspects that Brandon is up to no good.
Morganville: The Series will be broadcast on YouTube via
Geek & Sundry, with exact air dates yet to be confirmed.
The official series trailer was shown at the San Diego
Comic Con in July and is now available to watch online.

at the last London Comic Con back in May. For
this exciting event, teams from all around the world
were challenged to make a short film for Comic Con. The
catch? They had only a mere 48 hours to do so.
Assembling on a quiet Friday evening a fortnight before
Comic Con, the teams were handed a brief containing
a specific title - in this case either ‘Social Reboot’ or
‘Forgotten Mind’ - along with a particular prop and line of
dialogue. Not only did they have to fit all three into their
films, but the movies also had to somehow relate to the
theme of ‘origins’.
What followed was an exciting and exhausting 48
hours, with the teams racing against the clock to write,
shoot and edit their films and get them uploaded to
the internet before time ran out. Some made films on
their webcams or smartphones, others used high-end
professional equipment.
Crews ranged from families and friends getting
together for a fun challenge to film-making pros on their
days off - one brave soul even made a film entirely on his
own! People made films for the sheer love of film-making,

A panel of celebrity judges then picked their top ten
films, which were screened in front of a large audience
on the Sunday of MCM London Comic Con. Spider-Man,
Darth Vader and his Stormtroopers presided over the
awards ceremony with stacks of prizes being given out to
the winners. That wasn’t the last of the MCM Comic Con
Film Race though...
Skip to earlier this month when the gauntlet was
once again thrown down for aspiring Spielbergs and
Scorseses, with another set of teams embarking on 48
hours of manic movie madness. To see which films won
out at our spine-chilling Hallowe’en Special Film Race,
come along to Theatre B at 2.00pm on the Sunday of
the show!
Fancy getting involved yourself? Well, we’re doing
it all again for the next MCM London Comic Con in
May 2015! You can get more information and sign up
right now, by heading over to the Film Race booth
(Stand 2122).

eople cosplay for many reasons. Assuming a
different persona can be liberating and everyone
needs a break from time to time. Others revel in the
creativity- and what is the point of creating something
without showing it to the world? It may be that a
cosplayer wants a little time in the sun and be the focus
of people’s attention for just a little while. People do it as
a spot of fun, or as a group activity with friends or family,
or as a declaration of being a dedicated fan.
What people outside the cosplay hobby may not
realise is that it is a social hobby. The social side of
the hobby and being part of the cosplay community
is a reason that underpins all the others. Cosplay as a
shared experience enables so much interaction with
other people be they existing friends and associates,
other cosplayers, and complete strangers. Cosplay

As well as viewing the costumes and performances that
make up the EuroCosplay Championships Final, there
will be many opportunities to meet the best cosplayers
Europe has to offer and our internationally renowned
cosplay guests selected as our EuroCosplay judges in
the Cosplay area over the weekend.
Wondering how the EuroCosplay Champion is
selected? The Final boasts a panel of independent
judges who hail from outside of Europe. These judges
are selected for their deep connection with the cosplay
hobby, and will often be skilled and respected cosplayers
themselves. The EuroCosplay Finalists are interviewed by
these judges, who assess the accuracy of the costume
against provided source images and the quality and
complexity of the construction while considering the
ambition of the costume as well. That is not all however;
during the stage show the judges consider stage
presence, nature of the presentation, the ability to take
on the role of the character, and level of entertainment or
engagement of each EuroCosplay Finalist’s performance.
The scores are then totalled and checked and the judges
make their final decision.
Make sure you join us for this crown jewel of the
international cosplay calendar, and show your support
for your favourite costumes and countries! Make sure
you also join us on facebook.com/eurocosplay for
further coverage including studio photographs of all the
finalists and of course details of how YOU could qualify to
represent your country in 2015!

Power Rangers
1
993 saw the debut of a television series that would
rock the world of almost every child born in that
era. “It’s Morphin Time!” marked the beginning of
a television series that still runs today – Mighty Morphin
Power Rangers! Red, Blue, Pink, Yellow, Black, and
eventually Green or White graced our screens, kicking
the butts of any and all bad guys in their way, just in time
to finish their homework, hang out, and listen to some
cool music.
Haim Saban and Shuki Levy’s idea to adapt a Japanese
staple live action children’s show, Super Sentai, into
one more suited for American audiences, created a
phenomenon that instantly had a huge impact on pop
culture. Super Sentai had been running since 1975 with
the first Sentai show being Himitsu Sentai Gorenger, and

Lee in the 1980s. In fact, the first ever show to use a giant
mechanical fighting robot was none other than a live action
Spider-Man show produced by the same studio that
produced Super Sentai. But in the end, it was the Saban
adaptation of Kyǀrynj Sentai Zyuranger, as it was originally
known, which was morphed into the first hit series of
Power Rangers. Using a combination of footage from the
Zyuranger fights dubbed over from Japanese into English,
and original sequences featuring the Rangers we know
and love from our childhood, the show we know now as
Mighty Morphin Power Rangers was born.
Subtle changes were made from the original script.
Instead of ancient warriors, the Rangers were instead
modern day teenagers, which of course was more

style known as Hip Hop Kido, as well as his smart
mouth. He was seen as the second-in-command to the
original Rangers for quite some time. After appearing
in 82 episodes, Walter left the series, but returned to
cameo as villains Nightmare in Power Rangers Lost
Galaxy and as Gerrok in Power Rangers Wild Force.
Billy Cranston, the nerdy inventor and Blue Ranger,
was played by David Yost for a large period of the
original run of the show – almost 200 episodes! Billy
came up with many inventions to assist the Rangers,
including a wrist communicator, a modified Volkswagen
Beetle/Zord, and a mind reading machine, amongst
many other strange and creative devices. David also
played Billy in follow-up series Power Rangers: Zeo, and
the first silver screen showing - Power Rangers: The
Movie. Billy was the only Ranger to remain through the
entire Mighty Morphin Power Rangers series, and the
second longest serving Ranger of all time.
Taking over a role is a difficult thing to do, but Karan
Ashley did just that. Playing Aisha Campbell, Karan took
over the Yellow Ranger role from Thuy Krang, and went
on to play the character for 65 episodes until the end of
the third series, as well as appearing in the first Power
Rangers movie. Aisha appeared alongside the new Red
and Black Rangers, and even went on to become the
Yellow Ninja Ranger. Fun fact: In the original Zyuranger
footage, the Yellow Ranger was originally male! Add that
to her previous achievements and the Yellow Ranger is
one heck of a gal.
All in all, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers set the
bar for live action children’s shows, and at one point
featured crossovers with Masked/Kamen Rider and
even the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Austin, Walter,
Karan and David will be appearing on all three days of
the convention, so look forward to being able to meet
and greet the Red, Black, Yellow and Blue Ranger! Go

Zyuranger follow-up Gosei Sentai Dairanger, as well as
many other inspirations from the Sentai series. A very
creative take on an already existing television show, Power
Rangers became an extremely successful franchise
in its own right and shot its way to the top of every
Christmas list.
Mighty Morphin Power Rangers became an unseen
overnight triumph, drawing in higher ratings than any
other show on the network it debuted on in the US, as
well as becoming a mass media franchise, producing
toys of all shapes and sizes, video games, as well as
several big screen film adaptations. A reboot is said to be
in the works, set to be released in 2016. The latest series

T
his year has seen VidfestUK grow to become
an important part of MCM and its all thanks to
you. Last month we saw Vidfest venture out of
London for the first time with an area at MCM Scotland
in Glasgow. We hope to continue this in 2015 to
other cities.
With online and streaming video growing every year
and new stars being created across so many different
platforms we hope to start bringing you a wider variety of
online talent whether its YouTubers, web series creators,
animators, Vine Stars, musicians or gamers.
As usual we present a packed schedule of panels
featuring not only your favourite online stars but plenty
of ones you have yet to discover.
When I asked Jamie McKeller of RedShirt Films why
they come to Vidfest he said: “Because it’s an awesome
opportunity to meet fans and try to wrangle in new ones!
Also, for us lesser known creators we feel like little rock
stars when we run our panels.”
So this weekend we want you to be tagging us on your
tweets, Vine and Instagram videos and photos, so make
sure to hashtag #mcmLDN14.
See you online! Elisar Cabrera @elicab

A
fter an amazing debut at the MCM London Comic
Con back in May, the Go Indie Games area has
returned to once again showcase the latest and
greatest in indie gaming to gamers. With indie games
going from strength to strength at an incredible pace
over the last few years, it’s amazing to see smaller, more
focused and inventive games promoting innovation over
big budget effects.
Indie games are powered by the passion of their
creators, usually small groups of developers or
individuals, who don’t have to worry about appealing
to demographics or approaching focus groups. It’s all
about the ideas, distilling them in new and interesting
ways, and getting the games out there in the hands of
gamers in new ways - Kickstarter and Early Access
allow developers to take feedback directly by interested
gamers, in exchange for early builds and access.
The rise of digital distribution and the growing
recognition of smaller projects by game publishers and
format holders means it’s approaching a golden age for
the indie, and if you swing by the Go Indie Games area at
stand 851 you can check out some of these projects:
Developer: Lumo Developments
Brought to you by the same minds that inflicted both Kumo
Lumo and Paper Titans on millions of unsuspecting mobile
devices, Lumo Deliveries Inc. is the graphic-punk mobile
management game that combines the most compelling
gameplay on the planet with the most dangerous use of
colour and bongo drums you’ll ever experience.
MUTINY!
Developer: Hidden Armada
TERRATECH
Y’arr, this be a treat for all you landlubbers! Mutiny! is a
pirate brawler for up to 16 local players, which has you loot
enemy gold, keep your ship afloat and work as a team.
Unless you want to be Captain, of course, because while
you’ll get perks and boosts, you’re under constant threat of
your teammates mutinying. Best of all, you can turn mobiles
and tablets into controllers with the companion app, making
the scurvy shenanigans easier than ever to get into.
Developer: TerraTech
As a prospector starting out on a procedurally generated
exo-planet, TerraTech is a galactic exploration game where
you need to build an empire from the ground up. You shape
your journey the way you want to, research the technologies
you want and allying yourself with various corporations to
create a burgeoning fleet in the lawless frontier of space.

STUNT GAL
Developer: Kempt
One half of The Magnificent Stunts, the recently released
Stunt Gal sees Gail Stunt running, jumping and swinging
and kicking your way through and away from danger on
the set of “Buildings Are People Too: 2”. It’s a kick-ass
endless runner with awesome stunts, and now there’s
a Spooky Mansion pack just in time for Halloween, with
new bad guys and outfit for Gail.
STUNT GUY 2.0
Developer: Kempt
The other half of The Magnificent Stunts, Stunt Guy 2.0
stars Guy Stunt (Gail also co-stars) in Stunt Guy: The
Getaway 2. where you hang onto the back of a speeding
motorcar, bash your way through other stunt drivers,
launch off ramps, smash through barricades and cause
Michael Bay-levels of chaos and explosive destruction
to please the Director. Just watch out, because there’s
a good chance you’re going to crash and burn/get
squashed/fall to your doom along the way...

T
here are three very important words to think about
when you start to consider LEGO Batman 3: Beyond
Gotham, and those words are: LEGO ADAM WEST.
If you haven’t already dropped everything and rushed
out to the nearest shop to pre-order your copy already,
know that this doesn’t just mean you get to run around
as the 1960’s Batman we all know and love, but also the
slightly unhinged man himself, perhaps the best LEGO
cameo since Stan Lee’s sizeable role in LEGO Marvel
Super Heroes.
Following on from the impressive LEGO Batman 2:
DC Super Heroes, this time around Brainiac has got
his hands on the powers of the Rings of every Lantern
Corps, and is going around the universe shrinking planets
and adding them to his collection like some kind of
crazed collector. It’s such a bad situation that the Caped
Crusader and friends must forge a temporary alliance
with the Legion of Doom, and journey across the Lantern
Worlds to bring an end to Brainiac’s insane scheme and
save the Earth.
Worlds like Zamaron and Odym, the home of the Blue
Lantern Corps, will be where you need to go to collect the

Assassin’ss Creed Unity
Assassin
Release Date: 13 November 2014 Formats: Ubisoft
Developer: Ubisoft Montreal Publisher: PS4, Xbox One, PC
W
hile we all love the Assassin’s Creed series,
despite its shaky start, there’s one thing we all
have to agree on: it’s getting a bit much for us.
Turning the killer open world series into a yearly franchise
was a bold move, but this year we’ve got a double dose
of AC games. On the old consoles we’ve got Assassin’s
Creed Rogue, starring a Templar, while the new machines
get the stunning, co-op focused Assassin’s Creed Unity.
The year is 1789 in Paris, right in the early hours of
France’s Revolution. Protagonist Arno Victor Dorian
finds himself in the middle of the Templar and Assassin
orders thanks to a complex family history, and a love
interest on the other side of his ideologies who shares
a common interest. For the first time in the series, Arno
will be customisable beyond just different costumes and
colours, thanks to a skill tree that will allow you to improve
your stealth skills, melee combat prowess, armour and
health, as well as even Arno’s parkour abilities.
Another first for the series is what the game was
named for: co-operative multiplayer. Dropping the series’
competitive multipayer entirely, online co-op is the focus
of a multiplayer campaign that will see up to four players
work together on a series of missions. Entering a tavern
will show you friends playing Unity, with those busy on
missions appearing as “ghosts”. Joining others see
you still playing as Arno, with everyone else taking on
different character models as you play.
Perhaps the most ambitious game in the series ever,
Assassin’s Creed Unity takes the series in yet another
new direction, following Black Flag’s nautical focus.
Ubisoft must have an incredible amount of people
working on the series to be able to pump out two
massive AC titles in one year, but as long as Unity and
Rogue are fun, you won’t hear any complaints from us.
Make sure you check out Unity ahead of its November
release on stand 521.

Dead or Alive 5 Last Round
Release Date: Spring 2015 Formats: PS4, PS3, Xbox One, 360
Developer: Team Ninja Publisher: Koei Tecmo
O
ne of the best fighting games on Xbox 360 and
PS3 (not to mention PS Vita), Dead or Alive 5 has
already had one re-release that blew us away.
Dead or Alive 5 Ultimate seemed like the complete
version of Team Ninja’s bouncy beat ‘em up, although it
still tried to sell everyone even more ridiculously pervy
costume kits than they could ever possibly need. Didn’t
stop us wanting it, though...
Dead or Alive 5 Last Round brings the action to the
new consoles, with the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One
getting their first (and complete) taste of the action
in this new and improved package. Don’t worry DOA
afficionados still stuck in the last gen, as Last Round will
be coming out as a digital-only release for PS3 and 360.
So, what could possibly be new in this second
re-release? Well, there’s the obvious spit and polish,
sharpening up the visuals to bring it up to standard on the
new machines in an enhanced form, while maintaining
that rock-solid frame rate that makes the DOA series so
stunning. Even on the old machines, DOA 5 was a sight
to behold, so on the beat ‘em up starved new machines,
things will only look better.
Last Round also marks a welcome return for an old
favourite, The Danger Zone. With floor panels rigged to
explode when fighters land on them, this blast from the
past will join the interactive stages that made DOA5 so
much fun. It also features the most comprehensive roster
of fighters ever, including the new Nyotengu, who was
first seen in the Dead or Alive Ultimate Arcade, and any
DLC you’ve bought for DOA 5 Ultimate will carry over.
With over 300 unlockable costumes alongside many
hairstyles and accessories, Dead or Alive 5 Last Round
is the most
comprehensive
and definitive
version of the
brawler, so make
sure to check it out
here at the show
on stand 1221!

Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor
and the Warchiefs roaming the world. Each is a named
character with their own strengths, weaknesses,
fears and immunities, and you can carefully gather
information on each through interrogation. Kill a Captain
and you can weaken a Warchief’s position or draw him
out, but things get interesting the more you encounter
named foes.
Each successful action against you (or their own kind)
will increase their power and position, so it’s up to you to
eliminate them and leave a power vacuum. Should one
of them kill you, they’ll remember and taunt you the next
time you meet, and move up the chain of command.
Beat them, and they can come back worse and worse
for wear, with burns, scars and disfigurements. They
develop as characters to you, and boy do you start to
resent them.
If you haven’t already checked out this gloriously gory
return to Mordor, make sure you check it out here at the show!

magine trying to take down a bad guy, only for them
to keep slipping away. You’d be annoyed, right? You
know you’ve got to hunt them down again or replay the
mission, and it just becomes boring. Middle-earth: Shadow
of Mordor takes this frustration and has developed an
awesome way to build upon this idea of failure and personal
grudges, and named it the Nemesis system.
After his and his family’s execution at the Black Gate
of Mordor, the ranger Talion finds himself merged with
a mysterious Elf Lord Wraith and unable to die. Seeking
revenge against Sauron’s forces (specifically the Black Hand
who sacrificied him in the first place), you’re let loose on the

The main part of spreading chaos is through the

Tales of Hearts R
Tales of Hearts R
Release Date: 14 November 2014 Formats: PS Vita
Developer: 7th Cloud/Bandai Namco Studios Publisher: Bandai Namco Games
O
riginally a Nintendo DS title released only in Japan
in 2008, Tales of Hearts returns this November on
PS Vita, and finally escapes into the West, the last
of the bevy of Tales games to hit in 2014. Although not
remade by exactly the same team who developed the
original version, Hearts R was overseen by the writer and
character designer, who both added new content to the
updated JRPG.
Tales of Hearts follows the story of the awesomely
named Kor Meteor, who discovers near his home village
a woman called Kohaku Hearts and her brother Hisui.
After being attacked by a mysterious sorceress,
Kohaku is infected with an ancient monster called
a Zerom. Although his intentions are good, Kor
attempts to cure Kohaku by using his Soma, an
old weapon designed to fight Zerom, but in the
process accidentally shatters Kohaku’s Spiria
Core, which just so happens to be the source
of all her emotions. Whoops!
So, the obvious step is for Kor to
accompany Kohaku and her brother on
a quest to restore her Spiria, and to
get to the bottom of who exactly
wanted Kohaku to suffer in the
first place. At the centre of Hearts
R is the Tales series’ trademark
combat system, this time called the
“Aerial Chase Linear Motion Battle
System”. The usual real-time fights
this time around are made more
spectacular thanks to fast-paced
aerial battles, as you blow enemies away and chase them
in the air, freely moving through the skies mid-battle.
With a huge, beautiful story tell and countless enemies
to vanquish, it’s time to charge up your Vita in preparation
for what could be the handheld RPG of the year. Be sure
to stop by and try out Tales of Hearts R this weekend!

The console versions feature a unique, fully voiceacted storyline mode, set in a semi-futuristic Japan
rife with fantasy elements. Each of the 23 fighting
angels have their own unique stories, with more
than 300 different hidden scenarios to take on when
you’re not battling against friends or strangers. The
stories are daft and fun, made all the more fun by the
incredibly designed angels and Arcana, which can be

battle possibilities.
On both PS3 and PS Vita, there’s an extensive array

t’s taken a while for it to finally pull up to the
PlayStation 4, but Evolution Studios’ Driveclub is finally
here. It’s been a disappointing delay, but finally Sony’s
got a racing series to fill the multi-year Gran Turismo gap,
and go up against Microsoft’s Forza series directly.
As the name would suggest, one of the biggest
elements of Driveclub is being able to join up with other
players to form an in-game club. Six players can join
together to earn fame and complete challenges, with
each player’s contributions adding to the club’s overall
success - without having to play at the same time. You
just join a club and go out into the world and drive, online
or offline, taking on dynamic challenges as you go.
There’s a comprehensive single-player tour at the
backbone of Driveclub, which sees you race from
Hot Hatches through to multi-million pound dream
cars, constantly unlocking new vehicles the more you
race, with each event giving you multiple objectives to
complete as well as just going for the win. Dynamic drift
challenges, speed trap sections and lap time targets all
give you something else to go for beyond the win keep
you glued to the uniquely designed tracks.
The stunning visuals are complemented by almost
insane levels of detail in each of the vehicles you can
race, and there’s a neat time dilation system that allows
you to experience changing times of day as you race as
well as different weather conditions. Driveclub’s online
racing is where you’ll be spending most of your time,
however, racing for your club and fighting your way up the
leaderboards and taking on all manner of challenges.
Make sure you check out Driveclub here at the show,
and keep an eye open for the version that’s available for

new direction for the series, as it transforms into a
single-player, third-person survival horror tale that
bridges the game between the original game and the

ESCAPE is the story of Cliff Calo, who has set sail
to try and document the unexplained events that took
place on Banoi as part of a zombie documentary to
end all zombie documentaries. When he arrives on the
island of Banoi, unsurprisingly things aren’t quite as they
seem. Unlike the survivors of the Banoi outbreak, Cliff
isn’t immune to the disease that caused the outbreak,
so stealth is a key element to survival.
Plagued by weird moments of deja vu, flashbacks
and odd moments, Cliff’s quest for truth starts out with
a slow, steady amount of stealth as you’re no match for
a zombie or two. Gradually, you’ll become slightly more
proficient at dispatching the undead and eventually gain
a substantial arsenal of melee and ranged weaponry,
but you’re always pushed to try to go the sneaky sneaky
route over all out action, if possible.
There’s also a distinct graphical change too, with a
move towards cel-shaded visuals, presumably to bring
out the detail in Cliff and the tropical environment, which
is still slightly open but far more of a linear experience
this time around.
Can you document the events on Banoi and uncover
the truth behind the outbreak? Can you avoid infection and
escape from the dead islands? Swing by stand 841 and
have a quick stab at helping Cliff out on his big break...

I
n development at Wonderstruck, a small studio
made up of ex-Lionhead Studios developers and
other industry veterans, The Marvellous Miss Take
is the story of Sophia Take, who finds herself swindled
out of the greatest art collection ever collected by other
wealthy and villainous art collectors.
Miss Take decides it’s time to fight fire with fire,
however, and sets about robbing her collection back
from the swindlers and swines in order to preserve the
collection. She’s not one for beating her enemies to a
pulp though, so it’s up to stylish sneaking and stealing
to recover the stolen art.
Miss Take’s skillsets offer up an awesome array of
sneaking options, as she’s able to distract, teleport and
craftily manoeuvre her way through the world. Be sure
to cautiously approach Rising Star Games’ stand (1121)
this weekend to meet the new Queen of stealth.

“S
urreal” is certainly the word that should be
used when describing Tulpa, a side-scrolling
puzzle game from Greek development
studio Encryptique.
Taking control of two characters, a girl named
Ophelia and a mysterious ethereal boy called Oliver,
your task is to utilise the unique skills of these two
entwined souls to explore the world around them and
help them get through the challenges that lie before
them. The ever-changing world around them forces the
pair to stick close together, as the pair will start to lose
their minds if separated for too long.
Already an intensely beautiful game, Tulpa is
incredibly eye-catching and packed full of imaginative
designs, and oozing atmosphere. Part platformer and
part puzzler, with a haunting soundtrack and a striking
minimalist look, Tulpa is one of the most exciting indie
offerings coming to the show this weekend, so be sure
to check it out at the Rising Star Games stand (1121)!

Akiba’s Trip: Undead & Undressed
Release Date: Out Now Formats: PS3, PS Vita, PS4 (2015)
Developer: Acquire Publisher: NIS America
V
isiting Akihabara is one of those Bucket List
dreams. It’s the coolest, geekiest part of Tokyo, so
what better to do than run around exposing fake
vampire creatures by ripping all of their clothes off in
public. That’s right, in Akiba’s Trip: Undead & Undressed
“Synthisters” are running around the otaku heart of
Tokyo, feeding off the social energy of passersby,
and the only way to beat them is direct and complete
exposure to sunlight. Yanking down trousers, ripping off
shirts, showing their undercrackers for the sake of sunsoaked victory. Sounds perfectly dodgy to us.
After answering a dodgy job advert, our high schoolaged otaku hero Nanashi finds him-or-herself almost
transformed into a Synthister, but rescued at the last
minute. Quickly trained up into a lean, mean, pantyexposing machine, you’ll soon discover that there’s a
huge conspiracy behind all the crazy goings on, with
the evil-sounding Magaimono organisation that has to
be unravelled.
Those lucky enough to have visited Akihabara are
in for a treat, as Akiba’s Trip isn’t just set in the otaku
capital of the
world, it also
features more
than 130 real
life shops from
Akihabara, like the
awesome Super
Potato, faithfully recreated in-game. Even highlights
like Club Sega and Taito Station are there... sadly, you
won’t be able to go in these particular venues, but
the sheer level of detail and accuracy in recreation is
mind blowing.
Outside of the pervy gameplay and incredible
recreation of the district, you’ll spend a lot of time
mucking about on your in-game phone, changing
equipment, tracking records, checking your emails and
searching out side missions to keep you busy. There’s
also multiple relationships that could be pursued, so
you can come back to it again and again trying to woo
different characters.
Check out this super-chic slice of Japan here at the
show, and see if you can hold on long enough for its
PS4 release in 2015...

Developer: Sumo Digital Publisher: Sony Computer Entertainment
T
here is no greater feeling in life than that of creating
something, whether it’s new life, a home cooked
meal, or making a level in a video game from scratch.
The LittleBigPlanet series has been a joyously creative
endeavour, with stunning feats of creativity possible thanks
to its robust world-sculpting and design tools.
For his first outing on PlayStation 4, Sackboy travels
to the planet Bunkum and things go a little bit wrong.
Along with some new friends, Sackboy has to explore
the Imagisphere and work together to rescue Bunkum
from the clutches of the evil, creativity-deprived Newton.
Alongside the narration of Stephen Fry, there’s an allstar voice cast in LBP 3 that includes Hugh Laurie as
the antagonist Newton, while Peter Serafinowicz, Simon
Greenall and the man of a million voice acting roles Nolan
North also star.
Sackboy’s new friends are all playable, and each has
their own unique set of skills. Oddsock can climb up and
over walls with ease, Swoop can glide through the air,
while Toggle can switch between his Big and Little sizes
so he can help
he out in different circumstances.

Gone is the old rigid thermometer system, replaced by
a Dynamic Thermometer for controlling level size, while

The Order: 1886

to the Industrial Revolution that the tide begins to turn,
and technology far ahead of its time starts to come
through. Thermal imaging, wireless communication and,
of course, zeppelins. No game with a steampunk edge
would be complete without zeppelins!
Current Knights of the Order are given the names
of the original Knights. You are the third Sir Galahad,
real name Grayson, and part of a four-person squad of
Knights, which also includes Lady Ingraine, Sir Percival
and the Marquis de Lafayette. Using the advanced
weaponry of the time, like guns that shoot electricity or
molten metal, the Knights have to rescue London from
the threat of the half-breeds once and for all.
One of the best looking and most exciting projects
on PS4, the February 2015 release date looks so far

the London Comic Con at stand 821 so you can get a
hands-on with this industrial marvel.

PlayStation 4’s original unveiling, The Order: 1886
has been tantalising us with its slow drip-feed
of information. The first home console-only release
from Ready At Dawn, the studio that brought us many
excellent PSP titles like Daxter, God of War: Chains of
Olympus and Ghost of Sparta, The Order is a thirdperson action game set in an alternate history London.
An ancient order of knights have been keeping the
world safe for centuries from half-breeds, part man and
part monster, which have been causing chaos for a long
time. When humanity was losing the war, King Arthur
and the Knights of the Round Table stumbled across
a substance known as Black Water, giving its drinkers
advanced healing abilities and life expectancy.
It’s only when humanity somehow stumbles through

Each character has his or her own unique

t’s tough not to argue about the idea of a new
Borderlands game. So many of us lapped up each
and every DLC pack the first and second game had on
offer that more is inevitable. While we hope that Gearbox
is busy focusing all their efforts on putting together an
utterly epic third instalment in the series that can take
advantage of the new consoles, in the meantime we’ve
got something unique on the way from 2K’s Australian

Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel! sets the action before
the events of Borderlands 2, with you playing one of
four characters who were previously NPCs or enemies:
Athena the Gladiator (from The Secret Armory of General

Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate
Release Date: Early 2015 Formats: Nintendo 3DS
Developer: Capcom Publisher: Capcom
I
f there’s one thing you should never do, it’s
underestimate the power of the Monster Hunter
series in Japan. Phenomenon doesn’t begin to cover
the series, which almost singlehandedly saved the
PSP from a fate worse than death, and is a game of
choice on handhelds for gamers. Monster Hunter 4,
the latest in the series, hit the Nintendo 3DS in Japan
in September 2013, and now the enhanced edition
(Ultimate in the West, 4G in Japan) is heading to our
shores in Early 2015.
More than 28 million games in the series have
been sold worldwide to date, yet the series remains
something of a curiosity here in the West. In this
instalment, you take on the role of a hunter who joins
up with a travelling caravan to explore new lands, visit
new towns, and hunt down exotic beasts along the
way. This massive adventure consists of hundreds of
quests designed to have you take on more and more
extraordinary creatures in the name of resources and
new and improved equipment.
With a more enhanced focus on the
adventure and story than ever before,
Monster Hunter 4 also features a large cast of NPCs and
multiple base camps from which to head out on your
quests. Environments can be traversed in more ways
than ever, with improved wall climbing, mid-air attacks
and the ability to grab onto monsters as you attack.
Underwater fights have been cut, but they were pretty
fiddly on 3DS in 3, so maybe it’s for the best.
With full multiplayer support for co-operative questing
and extensive options for StreetPassing and Guild
options, Monster Hunter 4 has been a huge success in
Japan and it’s about time the series started taking off
over here. Make sure you go on a hunt here at the show
this weekend!

Mortal Kombat X
Release Date: 14 April 2015 Formats: PS4, PS3, Xbox One, 360, PC
Developer: NetherRealm Studios Publisher: Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment
I
t’s been more than three years, but the awesome 2011
rebooting of Mortal Kombat is still excellent. Injustice:
Gods Among Us was a nice distraction for developer
NetherRealm to work on, but it’s about time we get back
to the bloody, brutal world of MK. Mortal Kombat X, which
incidentally doesn’t stand for “ten” despite it being the
tenth main Mortal Kombat title, is looking to build upon the
success of the 2011 incarnation in a number of ways.
Not much has changed about the 2.5D fighting, with
gorgeously designed environments and 3D character
models fighting on a 2D plane, but many innovations from
Injustice are included. The most obvious is environmental
interactions, allowing you to bounce from one location
to another or make weapons out of the environment.
The energy meter returns, and this time the X-Ray
moves are even more brutal and inventive than ever.
Each character also has three different variations, with
different movesets.
After the previous game retold a number of Mortal
Kombat tournament stories in one, the events of MKX
include a brand new non-linear storyline, the likes of
which we can only speculate about. One thing’s for
certain, however: NetherRealm are great at tying stories
into fighting games. With a brand new cast of characters
and those returning after the events of MK 2011, they’ve
got free reign to make something unique.
Among the new characters announced so far are the
insect-controlling D’Vorah, a dwarf-woman and brute
combo called Ferra & Torr, the daughter of Johnny
Cage and Sonya Blade, Cassie Cage, and Kotal Kahn,
a blood god who has taken over the Outworld after
the events of the previous game. Don’t count out Sub
Zero or Scorpion though, their fight will be eternal,
fatalities notwithstanding.
Make sure you get in a couple of rounds here at the show
on stand 1141, ahead of the game’s release in April 2015.

an you believe that SingStar is celebrating its 10th
anniversary already? The series that brought in a
whole generation of karaoke lovers onto consoles
started out on the PlayStation 2 in grand fashion,
and after a successful run on PS3 that saw the series
escape the plastic instrument boom and bust, it’s back
with a bang on PS4, with a rather amazing new hook.
You see, you don’t need some dodgy plastic
microphones plugged into your console anymore.
Instead, any Android or iOS smartphone can download
the companion app and be instantly transformed into
your microphone. That’s right, anyone can sing into
their microphone to play, although you can always get a
pair of physical mics for a more authentic experience.
Enhanced with modern social features, so you can

I
t was important for Far Cry 4 to learn from two of Far
Cry 3’s only mistakes. The first was that they shouldn’t
kill off the star of the show halfway through: the midgame felling of awesome villain Vaas was an incredibly bad
decision that spoilt the rest of 2012’s shooter. The other
was in Jason Brody, the player character, who did nothing
to make himself sympathetic and was surrounded by
annoying, hipster friends you kinda didn’t want to rescue.
Far Cry 4 follows Ajay Ghale, a Nepalese guy returning
to the fictional Kyrat to spread his mother’s ashes in his
wild native land. Unfortunately, he’s quickly caught up
in a civil war, as the people of Kyrat struggle against the
regime of self-appointed King and madman, Pagan Min.
A sadistic, stylish sociopath, Min is a fearsome foe, and
Ghale finds himself allying with the Golden Path, a small
band of resistance determined to overthrow the “King”.
With a game world roughly the same size as Far Cry 3’s
Rook Island, new to the series is Kyrat’s insane verticality.
The mountainous land makes FC4 a far more dense
and treacherous experience, but also one that can be
experimented with in more ways than ever. A key part is

he Fourteenth main entry in the Tales line is unusual
for the series, as it’s a direct follow-up to the
previous title, taking place a little while after the
events of the original Tales of Xillia but telling a different
tale in a different way. Bandai Namco’s signature line of
JRPGs has been going from strength to strength in the
last few years, as more titles are remade and ported to
the West for the first time to show just how good the twodecade old series really is.
A year on from the climactic events of the original Xillia,
Tales of Xillia 2 sets the action in Elympios and
puts you in control of Ludger Will Kresnik, a
relatively silent hero who finds himself having
to make tough decisions. After boarding a
hijacked train, Ludger meets young Elle Mel
Marta, and with the help of Xillia 1’s Jude
Mathis attempts to retake the train, only to
be stopped by his brother Julius.
Injured by the ensuing crash, Ludger
and Elle are saddled with a huge amount
of medical debt owed to the Spirius
Corporation. With no choice but to work
off the debt, the pair must take advantage of the Kresnik
family’s ability to destroy parallel dimensions, and hope
that their quests lead them towards Elle’s original target:
reaching the mystical Land of Canaan.
Filled with cameos from the original game, Xillia 2
takes a somewhat darker tone to its predecessor, mainly
thanks to the decisions placed upon Ludger’s shoulders.
At various points throughout your adventures, you’ll face
many decisions that can alter the course of the story and
affect your relationships with other characters.
Make sure you stop by the Bandai Namco Games

novel and 2D fighting in a modern fantasy setting,
and this re-titled revision is set to finally hit the West
sometime in early 2015.
Set in a fictional modern day location, a phenomenon
called the Hollow Night has engulfed many regions
across Japan once a month for a number of centuries,
with each location overrun with Voids, shadow-like
creatures that feed upon “EXS” (a power known as
Existence). While normal human beings can’t see or
make contact with Voids, a rare few have the potential to
perceive them, but those who gain this ability risk losing

WWE 2K15
Release Date: 31 October 2014/ 21 November 2014 (Xbox One, PS4)

or the first time ever, WWE is coming to the new
generation of consoles, a good lord has it been
worth the wait! Now safely in the hands of 2K
Sports, it’s clear that now Yuke’s is working alongside
the fine folk at Visual Concepts, the primary goal was to
make wrestling look better than ever to make it really pop
on the new machines. After all, Yuke’s has been working
on the previous consoles for just about a decade now.
Key to this gorgeous looking brawler is the same facial
and body scanning technology that’s seen in the NBA
2K series, making all the Superstars, Legends and Divas
look better than ever before. There’s also an even more
diverse and feature-packed creation suite too, allowing
you to completely customise your own Superstar or Diva,
shape storylines and rivalries richer and more varied than
just... erm, wrestlers being hit by unmarked Lincoln town
cars over and over again.
Brand new for the Xbox One and PS4 is the
MyCareer mode, which allows you to take your custom
Superstar through an authentic WWE career, going
from an NXT scrub to RAW regular, before going for
a WWE Championship as a true Superstar. The 2K
Showcase offers a neat alternative, allowing you to relive
groundbreaking rivalries like Triple H vs. Shawn Michaels,
or John Cena vs. CM Punk through an extensive singleplayer campaign.
Along with the visual updates, gameplay has also
seen a significant improvement too - something fans
have been crying out for for a long time. Thanks to the
new motion capture tech, five times more new animation
is included than in any previous WWE game, which
combines with a new chain wrestling system to make
moves more fluid and dynamic than ever before.
WWE 2K15 marks a bold new era for WWE games,
and there’s never been a better time to get in the ring
than by trying out this new chapter than here at the
show this weekend!

Bloodborne
Release Date: 6 February 2015 Formats: PlayStation 4
Developer: From Software Publisher: Sony Computer Entertainment
H
idetaka Miyazaki is a name that should rattle the
very core of gamers who love a good challenge.
He’s the devilish mind behind From Software’s
beloved Demon’s Souls and Dark Souls games, and
the driving force behind the studio’s latest tough as
nails enterprise, Bloodborne. After taking a game
out and letting Dark Souls II become its own sadistic
thing, Bloodborne is a familiar step in a completely
new direction.
The city of Yharnam is a gothic ruin, a place of
pilgramage for those who seek to find a remedy rumoured
to be buried deep within its walls, which could cure
their afflictions. Of course, the city itself is plagued with
endemic illness, its inhabitants transformed into ghastly,
bestial creatures. As one of the travellers seeking the cure,
you need to explore the streets of the city, overcoming
the violent beasts that roam them in order to survive.
There’s a similar action RPG feel to many elements
of Bloodborne, but this is a much quicker paced
game to the Souls titles, and you’re much more
agile and offensive and far better armed. There
are no shields in Bloodborne, instead you’re able
to wield a firearm in your left hand, which can
be used to stun enemies to create openings
for your many and varied melee options.
There’s a stronger risk-vs-reward
element at play, highlighted by the ability
to regain a portion of health through striking
back at attackers. Weapons themselves
are nowhere near as fantasy-driven
as the Souls’ arsenal, and weapons
have alternate states, for example
transforming a simple short blade that
can be used to attack in close quarters
into a longer blade, perfect for those
moments you’re outnumbered.
Bloodborne is a new beast, but one
that retains that challenging spirit
and richly rewarding gameplay.
Make sure you stop by Sony’s
stand (821) here at the MCM
Comic Con to test your
mettle in Yharnem.

f there’s one thing gamers can’t seem to get enough of,
it’s Persona games. Persona 3 and 4 brought the series
into the spotlight like never before, with great stories,
amazing characters and great gameplay underpinning a
desire for more that led to titles like Persona 4 Arena, and
the excellent Golden re-release of 4 on PS Vita.
Persona Q: Shadow of the Labyrinth goes in yet
another direction, this time onto the Nintendo 3DS (and
onto a Nintendo platform for the first ever time), pulling in
characters from both Persona 3 and Persona 4 for an allnew crossover role-playing adventure. Rather than follow
in the footsteps of both those games, Persona Q opts
to follow in the footsteps of the Etrian Odyssey series by
focusing on dungeon crawling.
You can pick either the protagonist from Persona
3 and 4, each having a slightly different main story to
follow. During the day you’ll be able to interact with
characters, buy new items and visit the Velvet Room to

you’ll spend the bulk of your time. Here you’ll be exploring

Destiny
an extensive endgame that puts it up there
with MMOs for their post-level cap content.
It’s a hugely divisive game amongst gamers
and critics alike, but if there’s one thing is does
exceptionally well, it’s in the action. It may be
devoid of any innovative new weapon
designs or creations, but the
feel of combat is almost
unparalleled, at odds with the

ne of the biggest, most anticipated
shooters of all time, Destiny had captured the
imagination of so many gamers long before it
came out. One of the most expensive gaming projects
of all time, the new franchise from the minds that
brought us Halo promised to revolutionise online shooting
like never before, and have us make every battle a story.
Has it succeeded? Well, the jury is still out, but what
Destiny is doing is far more grounded in reality than
maybe we had anticipated. This mythical sci-fi world
pits you as a Guardian, a human, awoken or exo able to
utilise the power of Light as a Hunter, Titan or Warlock.
The fight is against the darkness, a tide of evil made
up of a number of conflicting species encroaching on
the Traveler, a giant celestial body that once allowed
humanity to grow and spread into space, but now only
defends humanity’s final city on Earth.
When you head out into battle on Earth, the Moon,
Venus and Mars, you enter shared worlds where other
players drop in and out, as you take on quests, collect
bounties and a couple dozen story missions. Everything
has been designed to be repeatable, as the game has

Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm Revolution
Release Date: Out Now Formats: PC, PS3, Xbox 360
Developer: CyberConnect 2 Publisher: Bandai Namco Games
A
fter the amazing anime retelling in Naruto
Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 3 and its Full
Burst add-on, developers CyberConnect
2 had a mountain to climb to try and top
their previous effort. Rather than retread old
ground again, Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate
Ninja Storm Revolution goes a completely
different route than the main numbered entries,
eschewing the intricate plots of the series or
even the broken up retellings of Generations,
in favour of something completely unique.
The main bulk of Revolution
comes in the form of Ninja World
Tournament, a huge gathering of
every character imaginable onto
one island to compete in tiered
combat in search of one true
victor. You take your pick
of character and explore
the island between bouts,
taking on side missions
and random fights from
strangers, and building up a collection
of items as you explore the secrets of
the island.
New to Revolution is a four-way fight system, that
adds a healthy dose of chaos into the usually 1-on-1
3D battles. When fighting in these numbers, you’re
competing to collect special orbs which can be
whacked out of each other, and the player with
the most orbs when the time runs out is victor.
It makes a refreshing change from the usual
tactical fights, something the series has
needed to figure out for a while now.
Alongside the NWT, there are also
three short story campaigns that chronicle
events that didn’t get covered in much
depth by both the anime and the
manga. One focuses on the birth of
the Akatsuki, another on the life
of Shisui Uchiha, and the third
on the exploits of Kushina
Uzumaki, and all feature
brand new animation by
Studio Pierrot.
With a huge 118 member
cast, brilliant visuals and
killer multiplayer, be sure

Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair
Release Date: Out Now Formats: PS Vita
Developer: Spike Chunsoft Publisher: NIS America
I
f there was ever a recipe for disaster, it’s grouping
together all of the elite students from one high
school into an enclosed or isolated space and
expecting there not to be a series of grisly murders.
It’s just asking for trouble, but guess what? It’s
happened again. Teenagers were already meeting a
grisly fate earlier in 2014, and now they’re dropping
like slaughtered flies once again in Danganronpa 2:
Goodbye Despair.
As the amnesiac Hajime Hinata, you’re picked as
one of Hope’s Peak Academy’s ‘Ultimate’ students
alongside 15 other guys and gals, and sent to the
remote tropical island of Jabberwock. With their
“teacher”, a rabbit called Usami, claiming this
to be a field trip, it soon transpires that it was an
elaborate scheme by their psychopathic headteacher
Monokuma. The students are all stuck on the island
unless they can murder another student and get away
with the crime scot-free.
Part visual novel, part social sim and part courtroom
trial, Danganronpa 2 has you split your time between
interacting with your fellow students, getting to know
them and earning items you can use in Class Trials,
where students are cross-examined after careful
examination of crime scenes. For this sequel, much of
the improvement is centred on the Class Trials, with
many different elements expanded and perfected, like
the Nonstop Debates now having “Agree Spots” for
you to shoot with your Truth Bullets.
Delve deep into Danganronpa 2 and you’ll
be dealing with more than just your murderous
classmates and sadistic headmaster bear. There’s
something not quite right with what’s going on, and
you’ll need to put your investigative skills to good use
to get to the bottom of things.
If you’ve not yet checked out this killer visual novel yet,
make sure to stop by and try out Danganronpa 2: Goodbye
Despair on PS Vita here at the show!
