JONI MITCHELL We honor Joni Mitchell with the SFJAZZ Lifetime Achievement Award for her artistic vision. The mission of SFJAZZ is to celebrate jazz as a living art form built on a constantly evolving tradition, and no artist better embodies constant evolution than Joni Mitchell. From her early days in the 1960’s folk music scene to her recent Alberta Ballet collaboration, she is recognized as one of the most influential artists in modern music. Mitchell’s integration of jazz elements and use of jazz musicians began with her celebrated 1974 release Court & Spark, a GRAMMY-winning artistic and commercial triumph. In 1975, she released Don Juan’s Reckless Daughter, which reveled in improvised structures and boasted a cast including Jaco Pastorius, Wayne Shorter, Alex Acuña, Don Alias, and Manolo Badrena. In the final project before his death, bassist Charles Mingus wrote six pieces for Joni Mitchell. Those compositions, with lyrics by Ms. Mitchell and initially titled JONI -1,2,3,4,5,6, are captured on the 1979 classic Mingus which also features Wayne Shorter and Herbie Hancock (both previous recipients of the SFJAZZ Lifetime Achievement Award). Her work with other groundbreaking musicians including Tony Williams, Pat Metheny, Michael Brecker, and Brian Blade has led to a legacy that transcends pop and jazz music.
