Cambistat® Product Guide Cambistat® Product Guide Growth Regulator for Healthier Trees Product Category: Growth Regulator Active Ingredient: Paclobutrazol 22.3% Item #: 3101, 3102 Unit Size: 1 gallon, 1 liter Unit Treats: Varies with tree type/size Product Overview: Cambistat® is a growth regulator used to extend the life of trees by keeping them at a manageable size for longer. Cambistat® gently slows the growth of trees, allowing the tree to redirect some of its energy from canopy growth into defense chemicals, fibrous root production, and stored energy. The reallocation of energy makes the tree healthier and more durable. How do I apply it? Dilute Cambistat® in water and apply as a soil drench or soil injection using the appropriate application equipment. When do I apply it? Applications of Cambistat® can be made anytime during the growing season as long as the ground is not frozen or saturated with water. Note: A treatment of Cambistat® lasts for three years. To ensure proper tree health, Cambistat® should be applied once every three years. How much product do I need? It is important to apply the proper dose to the plant you are treating. Gather the following information to determine the accurate amount of product needed: Determining DBH Single Stem: Measure the standard DBH of the tree. After determining the size of your tree, look at the rate card to see how much product is needed. Multiple Individual Trees Growing in Close Proximity: For trees that have grown close together, measure the DBH of each stem and treat each stem individually. Multi-stem Split At or Below DBH: For a tree that has multiple stems splitting below DBH, measure the tree at the narrowest point between the root flare and the split. Stem Clusters: For trees that are grown too close together to be treated as individual trees, measure the DBH of each stem and add the measurements together. 1. Determine the plant species to be treated and the rate category it belongs to. If you’re having trouble identifying your tree, contact the Tree Geeks for more information. 2. Measure your tree. At 4½ feet above the ground, wrap a measuring tape around the trunk of the tree. Divide the measurement by 3.14 to get the diameter, also known as DBH (diameter at breast height). See Determining DBH chart, left. If you have a tree with multiple stems, measure the diameter of the tree at the narrowest point between the root flare and split of the stems. Use the rate chart to determine the total dosage for the plant to be treated. 30% Missing Canopy 30% Shared Canopy 2. It is important to use at least the minimum amount of water (11 parts water to 1 part Cambistat®). Additional water may be used to achieve even distribution as long as the total dosage of Cambistat® concentration is not changed. Dosing Considerations: It is important that Cambistat® be applied at the rates recommended on the Tree Reference List, (page 3). Trees in the A, B, or C rate categories on the Tree Reference List are the most sensitive and have a smaller margin of error than the trees requiring high dosages for regulation (D, E, F category trees). Trees growing in confined growing spaces and stressed trees are more prone to over-regulation. Make sure dosing considerations are followed closely when treating these with Cambistat®. (fig 4) (fig 1) (fig 2) (fig 3) Restricted Roots Canopy Reduction When applying Cambistat®, you need to look at the canopy of the tree and compare it to a “normal” crown for that trunk diameter. While not a perfect system, it will help you apply a more accurate dose. If the tree is missing large branches from storms, over pruning, or canopy suppression, estimate the percentage of crown missing and subtract this percentage from your total dosage (fig 1). Additional rate reductions need to be made when treating trees with shared canopies (fig. 2 and 3). Confined or Damaged Root Systems Trees in sidewalks boxes, above-ground planters, and new transplants may draw Cambistat® from the treatment area in a higher proportion than a tree with a full root system. Reduce the dosage rate by 25% or more (fig. 4). Tree Geek’s mission is to encourage Do-it-Yourselfers who want to care for the health of their trees.
