The heart of Holland
If you are planning to spend some time in
the Netherlands with a group or individually,
you simply must include Utrecht in your
programme. Tourism Utrecht supports tour
operators, shipping companies and bus
companies without any charge and in a
professional manner.
Utrecht is the beating heart of the Netherlands.
A true university town that’s teeming with life,
Utrecht has inviting terraces, hip nightspots,
welcoming restaurants and a full cultural
agenda. ‘Green, healthy and smart’,
that’s Utrecht! The average resident in
Utrecht owns two bicycles, earning
it the title ‘Bicycle Capital of the World’.
Utrecht is a dynamic city and has the ideal size to
explore the centre by bike or on foot, yet expansive enough to enjoy modern architecture, trendy
shops and interesting museums for days on
end. Utrecht features Roman churches, medieval
wharves and naturally the magnificent Gothic
Dom, in addition to design by Rietveld, royal
trains and distinctive musical clocks. Utrecht has
a tremendously rich culture with lively events
scheduled throughout the year, from light art, film,
pioneering dance or classical music.
If all of this is too much for one day, simply book
your accommodation in a stylish hotel or intimate
B&B to relax; Utrecht will have even more to
offer tomorrow.

the former castellum as
a mission and converted
the Netherlands.
1122 until the

Utrecht was granted
a charter from 1122. Utrecht
remained the largest and most
important city in the Netherlands
until the 16th century.

Due to Utrecht’s continuous development into the trade centre of the
Netherlands, a canal system was
created in the twelfth century AD.

IFFY MUSEUM
There is only one Utrecht creation
more famous than the Rietveld chair,
Miffy. Dick Bruna, renowned illustrator and graphic designer, invented
his creation in 1955 while he was on
holiday in Egmond aan Zee. Since
2006, nijntje (known as ‘Miffy’ in
English) has lived in the dick bruna
house opposite the Centraal Museum.
The home was temporarily closed to
the public in 2015. In February 2016,
however, Nijntje will have an entirely
new home: the Miffy Museum.
This is the masterpiece of Gerrit
Rietveld, the designer who built the
house in 1924, commissioned by the
wilful Truus Schröder. This was his
first complete dwelling and a lavish
experiment. The Rietveld Schröderhuis is a UNESCO World Heritage site
and an icon of the city of Utrecht.

Emperor Charles V had the Sonnenborgh bastion built
in the sixteenth century to defend Utrecht against a

were reinforced with four bastions, and Sonnenborgh

100 years of shaping the world
Utrecht-Amersfoort is the place where four great De Stijl artists were born: Piet Mondrian,
Gerrit Rietveld, Theo van Doesburg and Bart van der Leck. Utrecht-Amersfoort is therefore
the creative hotbed where De Stijl saw the light of day. There is still much in Utrecht and
Amersfoort today that reminds us of Mondrian and Rietveld.
For instance, a visit to the soon to be reopened
Mondriaanhuis in Amersfoort is actually a
visit to the house where Piet Mondrian was
born. Utrecht has the largest Rietveld collection in the world. The original red and blue
Rietveld chair is on permanent display in
the Centraal Museum. Furthermore, with the
Rietveld Schröderhuis, Utrecht has the only
UNESCO World Heritage site that fits in with
the Mondriaan to Dutch Design theme. Rietveld
and Mondrian never met. But this is about to
change in Utrecht and Amersfoort in 2017!
UTRECHT
The world-famous architect Gerrit Rietveld
(1888-1964) was born and raised in this
modern university town, with its rich medieval past. He was one of the most important
and influential architects/artists of the last
century. His groundbreaking designs can
be admired in the Centraal Museum and in
Utrecht-Oost, where he built the Rietveld

Rietveld Schröderhuis
The Rietveld Schröderhuis is the architectural
high point of the De Stijl movement. The house
was designed in 1924 by the Utrecht-born
architect and designer Gerrit Rietveld. The
Rietveld Schröderhuis features on UNESCO's
World Heritage List, along with, amongst
others, the Eiffel Tower and Big Ben. An icon of
the Netherlands! The house was designed and
furnished by Gerrit Rietveld (1888-1964).
1924. This masterpiece has been included on
UNESCO's World Heritage List and is regarded
as a high point of the modern De Stijl movement. In 1931, Rietveld also designed four
town houses on the Erasmuslaan according
to the aesthetic ideals of the Modern Movement in architecture. Utrecht has a compact
city centre. Because all the places of interest
are nearby, a bicycle is the perfect means to
discover them.
Centraal Museum
The Centraal Museum strives to broaden the
horizons of its visitors with art and culture
from Utrecht. Utrecht is an internationally-oriented, historical and modern city, and
the museum tells stories from Utrecht's world,
from Roman times until now (and the future).
The collections of works by the Caravaggisti
and Modern Realists, famous fashion designers (e.g. Viktor&Rolf), De Stijl masters (e.g.
Gerrit Rietveld, Bart van der Leck and Theo
van Doesburg) and history (from Roman limes
to the Peace of Utrecht) help to make these
stories accessible for a wide audience. Rietveld’s masterpiece:

AMERSFOORT
In the middle of the Netherlands lies
Amersfoort, a pleasant town with
a medieval past and no fewer than
650 monuments. Amersfoort is the
birthplace of one of the pioneers
of abstract and non-figurative art:
Piet Mondrian (1972-1944). Mondrian
was one of the main contributors
to the magazine De Stijl. In the
Mondriaanhuis, the house on the
Kortegracht in Amersfoort where
he was born, you can marvel at the
artist's journey through life. In the
modern Kunsthal KAdE, you can
see the colours of De Stijl and their
artistic legacy reflected in a selection
of works of art. Both locations are
within walking distance from the
city centre. The title "Best Hotel City
of the Netherlands in 2015" and its
central location make Amersfoort
an ideal starting point for visiting
the Mondrian to Dutch Design year
throughout the Netherlands.
Kunsthal KAdE
Kunsthal KAdE organizes exhibitions
in the areas of (modern) art, architecture, design and contemporary visual
culture. The Kunsthal is located in the
Eemhuis, which was designed by the
Rotterdam-based architectural firm
Neutelings Riedijk Architects.
Exhibition: The colours of De Stijl
The three primary colours (red,
yellow and blue) are archetypal and
synonymous with De Stijl. Kunsthal
KAdE has highlighted the use of
colour by the De Stijl artists in a
special exhibition held in connection
with the centenary of De Stijl. What
the De Stijl artists had in common
is that they strived for colour as an
independent element "from art" and
18
not "from nature", driven by the idea
that the interrelationship between
colours would lead to "harmony". Kunsthal KAdE projects works by
the De Stijl artists onto the present
and uses these works to show how
artists continued to study the autonomous power of colour in the decades following De Stijl: via abstract
expressionism and postwar concrete
art to contemporary artists who have
studied colour as an independent
element. Think here of such artists
as Jozef Albers, Yves Klein, Angela
Bulloch, Gerhard Richter and Olafur
Eliasson. Runs from May to September 2017

Mondriaanhuis
"One must not adapt, but create."
The Mondriaanhuis in Amersfoort
is the house where the great artist
Pieter Cornelis Mondrian, the son of
a Dutch Reformed headmaster, was
born in 1872. The Mondriaanhuis tells
the story of the life, work and ideas of
Mondrian, whose influence on art and
design is still felt today.
The Mondriaanhuis will undergo a
metamorphosis in 2016/2017 and
will be reopened in 2017, the centennial of De Stijl. This museum of
concrete art, which was founded in
1994, is being transformed into an
international museological experience
which will take visitors on a journey
to the numerous inspirations for
Mondrian's ideas and work. A visit to the Mondriaanhuis is a
reintroduction to the wilful artist who
still inspires artists, designers and
architects today. His iconic work, his
search, his artistic and spiritual development, his friends and his famous
ateliers are examined during a 1-hour
multimedia experience. Runs fromplanned reopening in

Zonnehof Paviljoen
Gerrit Rietveld
The exhibition pavilion De Zonnehof
in Amersfoort is one of the most
important late works of the architect
Gerrit Rietveld and is a respected
example of postwar functional
architecture. The building is one of
a kind in the Netherlands: the only
other original exhibition pavilion by
Rietveld is in Venice. The pavilion,
which was opened in 1959, served as
a Centre for Modern Art until 2007.
It was then used for a variety of
functions. It also housed the Armando
Museum for a time. With a view to the
centenary of De Stijl, the municipality
of Amersfoort is looking into the
possibility of a new cultural function
together with Amersfoort in C. The
feasibility of a restoration will also
be explored. In 2017, the pavilion and
the architecture of Rietveld will be
the main focus of an exhibition and
ancillary programme of lectures.

Holland within the hour
Utrecht is the ultimate city from which
you can explore the Netherlands, with
everything that’s typically Dutch within
an hour’s drive: clogs, cheese, fish, flowers,
castles and mills. Another advantage is that
fact that, as regards prices for overnight
accommodation, Utrecht is far less
expensive than Amsterdam, for instance.
AMSTERDAM
The central location, compact city centre with
an intimate and historic backdrop and a varied
selection of events ensure that Utrecht is the
perfect operating base from which to explore
the Netherlands.
Cheese city Gouda, fishing village BunschotenSpakenburg, silver city Schoonhoven, the rural
city of Woerden and the Kinderdijk windmills are
all within an hour’s drive from Utrecht. But the
rich cultural heritage of the Province of Utrecht
is also within arm’s length. For instance, you can
easily combine a visit to the beautiful country
houses at the Utrecht Ridge or the National
Military Museum in Soesterberg with a visit to the
city as part of a daytrip excursion. A good reason
to discover the province from your base in the city.

in the Netherlands (vocational training facility) is here.
And the Dutch Silver Museum, housed in the former
Arsenal, has a remarkable collection of Dutch silver
from 1600 to the present.
The group will learn all about the shiny silverware,
silver brands and the craft. The museum has an
attractive day package known as ‘Zilver-uitje’ that
includes a city tour. Visitors can often be overheard
saying, ‘Schoonhoven has such cosy shops.’

HERITAGE
AMERONGEN CASTLE
The history of Amerongen Castle dates back
to the year 1286. After that, the castle has been
the stage of turbulent blue-blooded characters
for many centuries. In the 19th Century, architect
Pierre Cuypers completely renovated the place.
For a brief period of time it became the home
of Emperor Wilhelm II of Germany before
he found permanent residence in Huis Doorn.
Cultural province heritage
Utrecht is the ideal base for exploring the region. The region is
chock-a-block with cultural heritage within a stone’s throw.
Many treasures are hidden in the Utrecht region, in
castles and country estates, such as the Amerongen Castle
and Slot Zuylen Castle. But also in military heritage,
such as the Pyramid of Austerlitz and the Grebbeberg.
All that within a 30-minute drive from Utrecht. It is
not hard to combine a number of heritage locations,
and these have common themes in many cases.
For instance, Huis Doorn is closely related to Amerongen
Castle and likewise are the Museum Oud Amelisweerd
and the Pyramid of Austerlitz. What are the stories
behind it? Disclose the secrets in the extensive collections
of the various heritage locations.
kasteelamerongen.nl
HUIS DOORN
DE HAAR CASTLE
From 1920 until 1941, Huis Doorn
was the residence of Wilhelm II,
the last Emperor of Germany,
who lived in exile. After Germany
was defeated in World War I in 1918,
he was given political asylum
in the Netherlands as a neutral
nation. The home paints an authentic
picture of the princely style of
living that marks the transition
from the 19th to the 20th Century.
De Haar Castle is the largest and most luxury castle
in the Netherlands and among the international
top of historic country houses. Visitors to De Haar
Castle can relive the heydays of the castle, its
residents and the enormous wealth of the jet set at
the beginning of the 20th century.

SOESTDIJK PALACE
SLOT ZUYLEN CASTLE
Slot Zuylen Castle is on the river Vecht in Oud-Zuilen,
just outside the city of Utrecht. In the 18th Century, this
mediaeval castle was rebuilt and turned into a country
house. Its best-known occupant was a female author by
the name of Belle van Zuylen. Slot Zuylen Castle has been
open to the public as a museum for the last 60 years. Concerts, events and guided tours bring the past back to life.

Soestdijk Palace is a unique
experience. On display are the
representative period interiors and
some of the private living quarters
of the most recent occupants.
Soestdijk Palace also shows the
way Prince Bernhard and Princess
Juliana have been living for many
years. The original atmosphere
of the building has been retained
as much as possible.

47
De Grebbeberg
German troops invaded the Netherlands in the early
morning of the 10th of May, 1940. The next morning
marked the beginning of the attack on the Grebbeberg.
For three days, the Grebbeberg and surrounding areas
were the stage of heavy fighting that took the lives of
more than 400 Dutch soldiers. That made the battle of
the Grebbeberg the biggest and best known military
operation on Dutch territory.

MUSEUM OUD AMELISWEERD
Museum Oud Amelisweerd (MOA) is a home of art
in a scenic setting for three collections: the Armando
Collection, the historic country estate and the Chinese
Wallpaper Collection. These collections are linked
through the central theme of MOA: how are men and
nature related to one another?

NATIONAL MILITARY MUSEUM
In the National Military Museum at the former
Soesterberg airbase, the past, the present time and the
future of the Dutch armed forces come to life. The history
of the Netherlands and its armed forces is shown
in an impressive manner in this interactive museum.
nmm.nl
Waterline Museum Fort Bij Vechten
The only pyramid on European soil is situated in
the village of Woudenberg. The Pyramid of Austerlitz
is a relic from a time when the Netherlands, under
French rule, was subject to massive changes, which
still echo through in the present time. Matters such
as surnames, the tax system and a registry of births,
deaths and marriages have all been introduced by
Napoleon Bonaparte.
Fort bij Vechten is one of the largest and most
splendid forts of the New Dutch Water Defence Line.
The strategic location, at the crossroads of the
Roman limes and the New Dutch Water Defence Line,
and its unspoiled beauty qualify the fort as the icon
of the Water Defence Line. The new Waterline Museum
was opened on the fort in 2015. The
museum tells the unique story of the defence of the
Netherlands by means of water. During an interactive
journey of discovery, visitors learn about the
power of water and what a water defence line is.
