A t approximately 1915 C!u.een J u l y 1943 w r i t t e n o r d e r s were recieved from
t h e Captain of t h e Yard, E.A.S., Trinidad, B.VV.I., f o r t h e U.S.S. ABBOT t o
proceed imnediately a t b e s t speed and pick up t h r e e German s u r v i v o r s on a
r a f t v d t h sail s e t .

believed t o be depth charge exudate.
From t h i s posit.ion a c a r e f u l zig-zag s e a r c h was conducted w i t h i n t h e a r e a

r a f t . The g e n e r a l d i r e c t i o n of the search was along a l i n e I'rom t h a t p o s i t i o n

r e a s o n t o b e l i e v e t h a t t h e r e s u l t a n t t r a c k of t h e r a f t would be in t h e a r e a
o u t l i n e d above.

accordance v d t h o r d e r s received from his base a t Georf-'etov,il with no r e s u l t s .

On August 2nd, a havy PH; type plane reported a t 0803 .:;ucen t o f u r t h e r
assist i n the search.
The plan given t h e plane ':;as to f i r s t search i n i n c r e a s i n g c i r c l e s
around t h e estiniabed p o s i t i o n of t h e r a f t . Tills produced no r e s u l t s . The
plane t h e n searched on t h e o u t s i d e of our search area. A t 1310, t h e plane
completed i t s search in this a r e a w i t h no succes& and r e t u r n e d t o i t s base.
The U.S.S. ABBOT continued searching t h e area. A t 022000 August, a dispatch was r e c e i v e d f r m K.O.B.,
Trinidad, B r i t i s h ',Yest I n d i e s d i r e c t i n g t h e
U.S.S. ABBOT t o r e t u r n t o Trinidad i f t h e s u r v i v o r s had n o t been l o c a t e d by
s u n s e t . A t 1227, August 3, 1943, t h e U.S.S. ABB3T was moored a t the Naval
A i r S t a t i o n , Trinidad, B.YV.1.
A v e r b a l account of t h e n e g a t i v e f i n d i n g s and the search a r e a covered
was made to t h e Captain of t h e Yard.
