What to look for in a great penning horse?
A good horse is your greatest
asset in being a successful
team penner. It is somewhat
of a task to try out “prospects”
from the cutting or cow horse
disciplines and be able to tell if
the horse will be a good penner.
It is usually beneficial to use
the services of a professional
penner to help make that
decision.
Once you have “the horse”, it
is also important to practice.
What practice will do is expose
you and your horse to the many
different scenarios of team
penning.

Maintaining a great penning horse.
Clinics are also a great tool
to help you to quickstart the
learning process.
How much should you practice?
It depends on each individual,
but some sort of penning
practice or cow work will really
help you to know your horse
and get him working to the best
of his ability. I work my horses
at least once a week, sometimes
more on a new horse or a little
less on a seasoned campaigner.
What I like to do is use penning
practice to fix any weaknesses
my horse may have.

To me, it doesn’t matter if I
ride with my regular partners
or not. I mostly work on me
and my horse working as a
team. I want to know where
she is strong and where she
needs my help. Some cow work
exercises tailored to simulate
team penning maneuvers is
also an excellent way to get
your horse really broke to
perform consistantly for you.
I also like to experiment with
different bits to find the one
that my horse likes and works
the best in.
My feeding program is very
individualized so each horse
gets exactly what he needs
to maintain the energy level
specific to that individual. Some
need more energy to perform
and some not so much so
getting it right is a big part of
my preparation.
All of the above will help you
and your horse to be the best
you can be.
Good luck and see you in the
pen!
