Both Polman and INSEAD Dean Dipak Jain treated us to terrific speeches about a higher morale. William Hesketh Lever, founder of Lever Brothers had an inspiring mission: I believe that nothing can be greater than a business, however small it may be, that is governed by conscience; and that nothing can be meaner or more petty than a business, however large, governed without honesty and without brotherhood.”. Polman is focussing Unilever’s strategy to fit this mission perfectly. Polman states that research shows that we will need 50% more energy, 30% more water and 50% more food by 2030, which will lead to shortages if we don’t react. For this reason, Unilever has started its Sustainable Living Plan to help 1 billion people improve their health and well-being, to halve the environmental footprint of its products and to source 100% of agricultural raw materials sustainably. The momentum is there as consumers increasingly want ethically sourced products, sustainable brands are increasingly popular and retailers have their own sustainability goals. Unilever is especially suited to lead this ethical surge as it can really profit from it: As more people are educated and less people live in poverty, more people start using Unilever products DUTCH ALUMNI ASSOCIATION such as soap (for washing hands and clothes). It is inspiring and comforting to hear that powerful people and institutions are really trying to make a difference! Dean Jain is leading his own ethical revolution in education. INSEAD is migrating from being the business school for the world, to being the business school for a better world. Business schools have received strong criticism in the last few years as having been delivering superficial and money-focussed MBA’s in the last decades. Dean Jain is responding by changing the curriculum, the management of the school and faculty, and the admissions. This is a difficult proposition as diversity and ethics are not featuring in the worldwide MBA rankings which are important for new MBA candidates. The school is still working on finding the ideal strategy to attract the best students and deliver them not only as smart MBA’s but as good people, who will have a real impact on creating a better world. Isn’t it great to be part of all that? DUTCH ALUMNI ASSOCIATION 3 NEWSLETTER FALL 2011 REVIEW Sustainability Club: Dilemmas of Shell in Nigeria Dick Benschop, CEO Shell Nederland, and Mutiu Sunmonu, MD/Country Chairman, Shell companies in Nigeria, discussed the dilemmas of Shell in Nigeria in an open dialogue with the INSEAD Alumni on September 8th in a lively event at Shell in The Hague. Jean-Pierre Sweerts reports. Dick Benschop and Mutiu Sunmonu presented the business, operations, corporate governance and challenges of Shell in Nigeria. The dilemmas of Shell in Nigeria were clearly described. During diner we discussed the challenges in small groups and after dinner in a plenary session, in dialogue with Dick Benschop and Mutiu Sunmonu. During the evening the discussions became more and more open and the Alumni made several recommendations to Shell. Chatham House Rules apply about the content of the discussions and the recommendations. Although Shell must have heard before all recommendations possible, the alignment among the INSEAD Alumni about these recommendations and the discussions provided a clear direction. On its turn, the openness of Mutio Sunmonu and Dick Benschop and their colleagues was much appreciated by the INSEAD Alumni. The dialogue set-up of the meeting was the third one, after ENECO and Odenwald Organic & Albron, in a series of events of the INSEAD Sustainability Club focusing on using the INSEAD Alumni experience for recommendation to the executive boards of companies as well as for getting insights by the Alumni about challenges that many of us face in our work. The next one will be in spring 2012. DUTCH ALUMNI ASSOCIATION 4 NEWSLETTER FALL 2011 REVIEW Meet the Company: Equens On Tuesday 27th of September we had the opportunity to see the hart of all Pin transactions in the Netherlands at Equens (the former Interpay) in Utrecht. Our own alumnus, Götz Möller (MBA ‘98D) is board member of Equens since the incorporation in 2006. Charles Kotting reports. The company is the European market leader in handling payment and card transactions with 12.5% market share. The main operations are in the Netherlands and Germany and it also has operations in Italy, Finland and the UK. The numbers are staggering: • Processing 9.7 billion payment transactions annually • Processing 3.9 billion card transactions annually • Processing almost 15 trillion EUR in 2010 (> GDP of Europe) The visit was started with a drink and then we went up to “the bridge”, the main control center of the all Dutch Pin and Card transactions. All seemed in control and we were happy to see that the Dutch are already for 80% switched to “het nieuwe pinnen”. Then with some snacks Götz introduced us into the world of payments: providing consistent plannable profitable increasing riskless profits – sound good doesn’t it? Unfortunately all our account numbers may soon change due to some European SEPA rule – but this will be provide cheaper crossborder transactions and many opportunities for Equens. The evening was closed with some further discussions and drinks. Thanks to Equens and especially Götz for a very pleasant and interesting evening. REVIEW – SIN GOLF This year the annual SIN golf tournament took place on the Goyer golfclub in Eemnes. Fifteen alumni had correctly foreseen that just on this day the summer of 2011 would take place, and enjoyed a great day of golf plus an excellent borrel + diner afterwards. The wine was kindly offered by SIN, as is the custom since SIN's investment years ago in 'Stargreen', an organizer of golf tours in France. The organizing committee had devised a nice scoring system for both teams and individual players, in which Joop Heijenrath deservedly (though somewhat surprisingly) ended as the overall winner. To the great enthusiasm of all, since this means that next year's tournament will take place at De Pan! DUTCH ALUMNI ASSOCIATION 5 NEWSLETTER FALL 2011 REVIEW Annual Dinner at Unilever On October 25th the IAA Annual Dinner was held in Rotterdam, hosted by Unilever. It was an event in the true spirit of INSEAD: food for thought in ground breaking speeches in the stimulating company of a strong network of over 160 INSEAD alumni and excellent food. Willem Brandt reports. Photographs by Victor van Leeuwen www.e-mage.nl We have heard the revolutionary thoughts of Unilever’s CEO Mr. Paul Polman, who is changing the structure, strategy and culture at Unilever, not only to regain market share and build growth, but also to increase Unilever’s impact on making the world a better place. school for a better world, showing that MBA institutions can indeed have a very positive impact on our world. In order to make this vision reality the curriculum will need to change and also increased focus will be given to create the right mix of different backgrounds, in gender and nationality. He passionately explained how the Unilever Sustainable Living Plan is helping the company achieve its vision of doubling the business whilst halving the environmental footprint of its products; and he held a rallying cry for all of us to join the sustainable movement in business. The alumni engaged strongly in the subsequent Q&A sessions to exchange views in this area. A tangible element in the strive for more impact is the installation of post-MBA scholarships. These scholarships will be awarded by the dean to MBA graduates that want to dedicate a significant period after INSEAD to a good cause. Dean Dipak Jain shared in his speech his thoughts about making INSEAD the business In summary it has been a great Annual Dinner which will surely will be remember by those who attended. Post Script from the fundraising team: In the Benelux, we have decided to join forces to create the funds to enable dean Jain to appoint MBA graduates that will receive these scholarships. We want to ask you to participate in this Benelux post MBA scholarship. We strive to create a fund that will enable the scholarship for the next 10 years. As always, the Dutch fiscal system will support our aim if and when the donation is organized in the form of a pledge of at least 5 years. Please contact us to arrange that for you. We will reach out to all of you individually by letter, e-mail or in person to ask for your support, or even better, if you want to pre-empt that: donate to our Rabobank account for the INSEAD Alumni Fund at account number 39 43 11 124 and mention Benelux post-MBA Scholarship Fund. We sincerely hope that you will join our goal to help to build INSEAD as the business school for a better world. DUTCH ALUMNI ASSOCIATION 6 NEWSLETTER FALL 2011 DUTCH ALUMNI ASSOCIATION 7 NEWSLETTER FALL 2011 REVIEW Dutch Alumni Volunteer Barbecue September 18th, the Dutch Weather Gods decided to bring out this year’s Summer exactly at 16.00 hrs – just in time for the annual Dutch Alumni Volunteer Barbecue. Around 35 alumni and 15 of their children gathered at the beach in Muiderberg, to celebrate the achievements of the last year. The great venue, service and excellent food&beverage, allowed us to spend some quality time together, and start brainstorming about possible events and actions for the coming year. Register by December 15th, with Mary Linn at inseadalumni@planet.nl DUTCH ALUMNI ASSOCIATION 8 NEWSLETTER FALL 2011 REVIEW The Alumni Volunteer Weekend in Lisbon, Portugal From October 14 to 16, the National Alumni Association of Portugal hosted the Alumni Volunteer Meeting. This is a meeting between the President of the INSEAD Alumni, Sven Kado and the Alumni Executive Committee, the Presidents of all the Alumni Associations, the head of the IAF and the IAF trustees. Olivier Gorter reports. For our Association, Olivier and Joop were present to exchange best practices and work on strengthening the ties between the alumni worldwide. Other Dutch representatives were Bart Blommers (IAA treasurer), Roland Stapper (IAA head of clubs - member of UK NAA) and Paul Huysmans (IAF trustee UK). As always, the programme was a mix between work and fun. We arrived on Friday afternoon for drinks and dinner hosted by the president of the Portuguese Alumni Association Joaquin Paiva Chaves. On Saturday we had an early start with best practices workshops, while the IAF had their internal meeting. After lunch a bus took us to Lisbon and a guide gave us a tour through this beautiful city. On Saturday evening there was a grand dinner at the Cascais Naval club where a number of Portuguese alumni were also invited. Sunday started with more workshops and general info sessions, followed by the Alumni general assembly, which is held to approve the budget, vote on spending (e.g. priorities for Connect) and get more info from the school about its strategy and current status. After Lunch, most participants returned home. As this was the first weekend of the Dutch Autumn holiday, we stayed for a few days in the hotel in Cascais with a few of the other families of Alumni representatives. We also repeated our top position in relative participation in the IAF. Good to see that the Dutch are not cheap and that we understand that scholarships for people from poorer countries are necessary to be the business school for the world. Well done to all of us! Best practices sessions yielded quite a few good ideas on large (multi-day)events and showed that some countries/associations can do a turnaround in one year: Under new leadership, Brazil - which association was a financial mess- went from 12 to 120 members, introduced direct debits and copied six different best practices from other countries - well done! All in all it is great to go to these weekends and get back into a room or an amphi with this group of people from 60 countries. Especially during the General Assembly, as all sorts of politics and ego come into play (e.g. on voting and on representation), it is great to see the strength, the versatility and the diversity of the INSEAD alumni! Our NAA was awarded 2 bottles of champagne by the IAA executive committee, for the highest number of new members in 2010 and for the highest percentage of EDP membership worldwide. DUTCH ALUMNI ASSOCIATION 9 NEWSLETTER FALL 2011 REVIEW INSEAD Alumni Healthcare Summit The 3rd annual INSEAD Alumni Healthcare Summit was held on October 6 and 7 in Berlin, offering an action packed two-day program themed around Incumbents vs. Insurgents. Annemarie van Neck reports. (founded 15 years ago) and its plans going forward. INSEAD has long had a strong presence in the healthcare industry. INSEAD’s alumni are active in pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, diagnostics, medical devices and healthcare services as well as healthcare-focused consulting, banking and private equity. They work on six continents and include the CEOs of more than 50 healthcare companies. The INSEAD Healthcare Alumni Network represents the interests of the approximately 2,000 alumni working in the healthcare industry and associated fields, with a mission to encourage networking and discussion on healthcare topics across geographic boundaries and industry subsectors. It works closely with national healthcare alumni groups in several countries as well as INSEAD's own Healthcare Management Initiative. In addition to encouraging and supporting national groups, the network organizes an annual international conference, the INSEAD Healthcare Alumni Summit. The Annual Summit is an excellent occasion to learn about the latest healthcare developments, and a great way to catch up with old friends, and meet new useful contacts. The speakers included both alumni and nonalumni senior executives, from a wide range of healthcare companies, ranging from large pharma to small start-ups. Also, Professor Stephen Chick gave an update on the School’s Healthcare Management Initiative DUTCH ALUMNI ASSOCIATION The Dutch alumni were well represented again this year and also participated in the organization of the Summit: Robert van Schagen (IEP'02Dec) and Tom Fransen (YMP'06Sep) organized and hosted one of the break-out workshops themed around LEAN in Healthcare. Thank you to Chandra P. Leo (MBA ‘02D) and his team for a flawlessly organized, inspiring event. 10 NEWSLETTER FALL 2011 UPDATE INNED INNED organization We are pleased to announce that Hendrik Jan Laseur, Jeroen de Kempenaer and Guus Overdijkink have joined the INNED management team. These also to replace Peter Idenburg and Maurits de Brauw, who will remain active “advisors “of INNED. We owe enormous thanks to Peter Idenburg, who founded and shaped the INNED academy and to Maurits de Brauw, who initiated INNED presence among the non-profit sectors in Healthcare and “Woning Corporaties”. INNED Advisory board: With great relief we can report that Matty Vanderbroeck (INNED founding father) is recovering well from a serious illness for which he had to have a number of operations over the summer. He still has to have some further treatment, but last time I met him he was already very much “alive and kicking” and full of ideas for INNED and INSEAD, sipping wine in the process! INNED Events Save the Date for the IN-NED Event on December 7th in Amsterdam (starting 16.00 in Café Dauphine, Amsterdam): Over 100 participants of whom some 70% hold supervisory positions. Time to have another great IN-NED event! Three items on the agenda: to catch up on IN-NED developments, to sink your teeth into real life non-executive challenges, and to debate what makes IN-NED different and better than other non-executive initiatives. And from 19.00 hrs onwards we leave you ample time to enjoy drinks and a dinner in Dauphine’s special ambiance. INNED is assisting BDO accountants and tax advisors for a seminar on November 22nd on the role of non-executives at family owned companies. Selected INNED Academy graduates, with relevant experience have been invited for this event. INNED Academy goes international! We are very proud that already the 4th wave of INSEAD alumni will be participating in the INNED Academy, which will kick-off on November 25-27th with the module at INSEAD in Fontainebleau, under the expert guidance of “our” Professors Erik van de Loo and Jaap Winter. Peter Idenburg will also be on hand as one of the coaches during these highly stimulating sessions! This will also be the first time that INSEAD alumni from Germany will be participating in this module, which is part of the newly initiated German IAA Non-executive initiative. INNED in the press Thanks to the initiative of Paul Broersen INNED got 2 full pages press coverage in the Financieele Dagblad early September, which triggered some interesting responses. Of course we felt only half the story was really covered it putting INNED on the map in Holland, judged by the many responses we received. INNED website: Both Paul’s (Diercks and Broersen) spent quite some efforts on updating our website, so please take a look at http://iaa.insead.edu/IAA/NLD/clubs/Inned/Pages/Homepage.aspx INNED new initiative? Some may know that Ron Soonieus (Camunico) is doing some groundbreaking work on helping organizations active in Art & Culture on governance issues and we are discussing how INNED could be of help in this respect. Anyone with special interest or related experience, please contact us (inned@insead.nl). DUTCH ALUMNI ASSOCIATION 11 NEWSLETTER FALL 2011 ALUMNI IN THE NEWS INNED: Roland Zoomers and Paul Broersen DUTCH ALUMNI ASSOCIATION 12 NEWSLETTER FALL 2011 INSEAD ALUMNI FUND Educate; innovate; renovate! This is the time that people consider to give to their favorite charitable organizations. Please consider INSEAD this year. The school needs your support and has defined a campaign that combines the best of three worlds : upgrade of the school’s facilities, add additional scholarships and provide recognition for the donor at a very visible place. Background: INSEAD introduces the Great INSEAD Seat Sale! This unique initiative improves INSEAD facilities today while ensuring scholarship support for diverse and qualified participants in future promotions. All of you have spent time in flagship Amphi A on the Fontainebleau campus. Well, Amphi A is in need of a little attention. It needs to be more current, more accessible – and we need your help to make it so. Alumni and friends: For a gift of €5,000, you will not only help us to make it more physically accessible and state-of-the-art, you will also enable a qualified participant to access INSEAD via scholarship support. Recognition: The seat you choose will carry a plaque with your name and promotion on it – or that of your company or someone you would like to honour or memorialize. The duration of this recognition will be until the next renovation (minimum: a decade to fifteen years). At that time, you will have first right of refusal to renew your support for the seat or seats that are named for or by you. Double Impact: Your gift will both enable the School to upgrade this key teaching space and put a qualified participant in that seat via your parallel contribution towards INSEAD’s scholarship programme. Both Missak and I have over the past 10 years frequently drawn upon the expertise of fellow Insead CCC alumni. I am passionate about helping CEOs and senior executives adopt broad perspectives in leading transformations and strengthen financial performance. In my freetime, I have built a reputation as an excellent cook and host to my diverse circle of friends. Godart van Gendt (MBA’11J) Godart graduated from INSEAD in June 2010, spending his full year on the Singapore campus. After graduation, he opened a distribution office in Singapore for small-scale desalination equipment. At the beginning of October, he rejoined McKinsey & Company in Amsterdam as Associate. Godart has a background in physics, and has a passion for the energy industry, politics and hiking. Elton Habits (TGM’11) Elton, Sales Director at Wegener JobTrack - my colleagues would describe me as an ‘inspiring, highly driven, dedicated and customer focused Sales leader’. Within Wegener’s online division I head up a team of Sales, MK and ICT specialists to grow Wegener’s recruitment advertising business in the Netherlands. In 2011 I attended the INSEAD Transition to General Management programme at Fontainebleau and Singapore, which was a great opportunity to significantly improve my in-depth understanding of the foundations of business; to better understand myself and my role as a leader; and to meet an unique set of individuals of other cultures, industries and backgrounds. Jonathan Joubert (MBA’11 J) Born and raised in Curaçao, I came to the Netherlands to study Computer Science in Delft. After graduation I have worked for McKinsey in Amsterdam for a few years, before going to INSEAD. My INSEAD year was, of course, an amazing experience, including living in and travelling around 3 continents. Now I am back at McKinsey Amsterdam as an Associate, where I hope to start focusing on the high (and low) tech industry. My main hobby is playing soccer. Arjan de Jong (MAP'11May) I live in Zaandam and work for Vattenfall/Nuon in Amsterdam. Since 2009 I have been responsible for the customer service for the largest business customers to whom we deliver electricity, gas and wind energy. Before 2009 I worked for insurance company Achmea in different management functions. In my free time I like to enjoy life to the fullest: sitting in the sun with delicious food and drinks while hanging out with friends. I also try to spend a lot of time on photography and cinematography watching movies and shooting movies myself. My INSEAD experience has been very special. I wasn't sure what to expect but I've had an amazing three weeks. The group, the campus, the professors, the content of the program, the organization, everything was great! Truly a life changing experience! So now it's time to profit from all the new things I've learned and to capitalize on the investment. When you're full of new energy and new knowledge while the environment you work in hasn't really changed, maybe that's when the big challenge starts!
