Rev Sandra Williams – Assistant Priest
A necessary journey
As you may have previously read, Graham and I moved here from Shropshire, we
spent four years living in a village called Upton Magna to the east of Shrewsbury.
In December 2010 we were gripped in the first snows of a winter that seemed to go
on forever. Although it looked beautiful, I’m not really sure I would like a repeat
performance this year! Every time we needed to go somewhere we had to ask
ourselves, is this journey necessary? Will we get there safely? Is it worth taking
the risk? Graham and I decided it was worth going to greet our newborn Grandson
on the 16th December, Zachary had arrived a little earlier than planned and there
was a lull in the snow so off we went to Salisbury. What a beautiful sight greeted us
- very proud and contented, if exhausted, parents, and one bundle of joy that
seemed so small and delicate. Had his mother really been that small? To look at
Zachary now, at nearly three years old, it’s hard to believe he could have ever have
been so small! Perhaps it was the weather that made him seem even more
vulnerable. Only too soon we had to say goodbye and start our next journey back
to Shropshire. As we got further north it became apparent that the only safe thing
to do was pull off the motorway and find a safe haven until the worst snow storm to
sweep across the Midlands for many years hit. We gingerly drove home the next
morning on a very icy motorway – the M5 seemed suddenly very hilly! For all the
drama, our journey had been worth it and we were lucky to have no mishaps.
Except maybe having to miss the Carol Service that I had prepared for the
neighbouring village!
This makes me think of another journey that would have been even more difficult
and fraught with danger. We don’t hear anything about the actual journey from
Nazareth to Bethlehem that Mary and Joseph took, but I’m sure it wasn’t easy for a
very heavily pregnant Mary and a worried and confused Joseph. It was a
necessary journey because they had to return to Joseph’s home town for the
census and here Mary’s baby was born. And who made their journey to meet this
new baby – proud grandparents? There is no record to tell us that, but we do know
humble shepherds and wise men from far away made the journey.
And what of us, what journeys will we make this December? Frantic trips to
shopping malls, followed by round routes to friends and relations dropping off
presents and spreading festive cheer, office parties and a trip to the pantomime.
Hopefully we will see as necessary a journey to meet with the Christ-child, maybe
through one of the services going on in the village or benefice, or in the peace and
quiet at home - you may be surprised to find it’s the most important journey of all.
I wish you all a very happy and holy Christmas and a blessed and peaceful 2014.

SHIPTON BELLINGER SUMMER FETE
Saturday 14th June 2014
1.30 – 5.00
As we hurtle towards Christmas our 2013 summer fete seems like a distant
memory where we bathed in sunshine enjoying the company of our friends and
family. It may surprise you to know but the Fete Committee have already been
plotting and planning since then in preparation for next year’s fete!
Some of you who attended this year gave us some really constructive feedback by
completing our survey, which in turn has already given us some great ideas, which
we are working on to ensure that we deliver an even better event for 2014.
You said….we would love to see the old train back again.
We listened….Trigger the Train is Back!
You said….Less commercial side shows and more village run side shows.
We listened….the committee have a whole host of ideas for some traditional fun
side shows from ‘hook a duck’ to ‘throw a welly’ all run by the residents of Shipton.
We do however have a slight problem here because we need people to man these
stands? Therefore we need YOU! So please, please contact Helen Batterby or Ian
Woodcock and pledge some time. The more help we get with these stands the
cheaper it will be to run and the more fun and enjoyment
everyone will have. YOUR VILLAGE NEEDS YOU!
You Said…it would be nice to have something different to what we’ve had in the
past.
We Listened….just one of the key attractions at next year’s fete will be a
fabulous display of model helicopters, which are a sight to behold. This year our
village blacksmith was a huge hit along with the stunning birds of prey so we’re
adding to this for next year with two amazing camels!
You said…why can’t we have a dog show as in years gone by?
We listened…what a hot topic! This one really put the cat amongst the pigeons
so to speak. However …..as part of our lead up to the fete we will be putting on a
dog show on June 8th! The show will be held on Miss Albrights Field, which Chris
Tait has kindly agreed to let us use, so thank you Chris!
Of course there are so many other attractions and events which are still to be
confirmed so watch out for more news on the village facebook page or the fete
website www.shiptonbellingerfete.co.uk.
Happy Christmas everyone from the Fete Committee.

13th November 2013
We are delighted to report that we have now been able to have our all weather, outside play area erected
and has now been in use for a couple of months by the children. They love it (and so do we!) . It took a
lot of hard work raising the money to pay for it, thanks to the help and support of staff and their families,
committee members, parents and carers of current and past children attending the preschool and kind
donations from other sources.
We would also like to thank Shipton Bellinger Allotment Society for their very kind donation of
£650.00 to pay for the fence which has been erected around our new outside play area.
We would also like to thank everyone who supported us at the Village Fete in June – it was a lovely day
and well organised village event! The Village Fete Committee kindly donated £100 to us from the day,
with which we have purchased a leaf blower, to keep the leaves off our all-weather grass, keeping it safe
for the children to play on.
On Friday 25th October we invited some of the older residents of the village to our Harvest Celebration,
where they were greeted with tea/coffee and biscuits. They then enjoyed listening to the children singing
and dancing to some of their favourite Harvest Songs. At the end, they were each given a food hamper,
by the children, made up of food donated by staff and parents. Thank you to those who made donations.
We had a Help for Heroes day on 11th November, where the children were encouraged to wear red and
blue items of clothing, and any donations they would like to give, will be passed onto the Help for
Heroes Charity. We also ‘wore something Spotty’ on Friday 15 th November to celebrate Children in
Need, again any donations given were passed on to the Children in Need Charity.
The pre-school children will be making a ‘Christmas Tree’ for the display in the Church on Friday 6 th
and Saturday 7th December – it would be great if you could pop along and see it, along with all the
others which will be on display.

The Pimms and Puds evening went very well and everyone seemed to enjoy
themselves, hopefully we will see some new faces at the next meeting. The
November speaker was Wendy Spreadbury and she gave a wonderful
demonstration of how to ice a Christmas cake. The cake was then given as a
raffle prize and Wendy Sperry was the lucky winner.
Several members attended the group meeting at Weyhill and two members
attended the Autumn council meeting at Basingstoke where the main speaker
was Jenny Murray from R4 Women's Hour.
In the New Year it is hoped to arrange to visit the Co-op distribution centre at
Andover for a tour round and maybe lunch afterwards.
Instead of the usual meeting in December, members will be going out for a
Christmas meal. The next normal meeting will be on 15th January when there
will be a demonstration of Dorset buttons.
New members are always welcome , please contact Alison Gerrett on 01980
846170.
