LEGACY AWARD
Sylvia is a devoted member of our Congregation and a link
to the founding families of the synagogue, including her
parents, David & Anna Winetsky, of blessed memory. She
has been an active member of Congregation Anshe Chesed
since it was known as the “Blancke Street Shul.” She is an
ardent supporter of the State of Israel and her articulate and
incisive Letters to the Editor are frequently published in the
New Jersey Jewish News and are widely acclaimed. Her late
husband, Harold Scheininger, was a past President of Anshe
Chesed. We thank Sylvia and her family for their continued
commitment to our shul.
Bobbie & Leonard Neuringer
DISTINGUISHED LEADERSHIP AWARD
Leonard and Bobbie’s devotion to Anshe Chesed spans over
40 years. Leonard’s past roles include President, Executive
Vice President and High Holiday Fundraising Chairman.
He currently serves as Treasurer. Year in and year out,
from roof repairs to new signage, from fundraising to daily
office accounting, Leonard has spearheaded most of our
synagogue operations. Bobbie gives her pledge and support
to Leonard’s work at the synagogue, no matter the hour. We
honor Leonard and Bobbie’s tireless work and dedication on
behalf of Anshe Chesed.

YOUNG LEADERSHIP AWARD
Sandi & Michael have shown incredible commitment
to Anshe Chesed. Michael currently serves as Board of
Directors Recording Secretary, while Sandi serves as CoVice President of Food Services. Between them, they have
served on numerous committees over the years, including
Youth Committee, Dinner Committee, and High Holidays
Committee. Always ready to volunteer, Sandi & Michael have
set a beautiful example for their children. As fifth-generation
members of Anshe Chesed, their four daughters are already
active and dedicated participants in synagogue life. Sandi
& Michael are true exemplars of young leadership at Anshe
Chesed.
A MESSAGE FROM
the Dinner Co-Chairs
This is Congregation Anshe Chesed’s first dinner celebrating our
second century and we are delighted to pay tribute to our most
deserving honorees, Sandi and Michael Newman, Bobbie and
Leonard Neuringer and Sylvia Scheininger. All of them are scions
of long time Anshe Chesed families. Their loyal service to our
congregation and community spans generations. They represent
and embody the energy, leadership and commitment at the heart
of our congregation. They continue to inspire us.
Over the years, our members have honored and learned from our
past, preserving the traditions taught by our ancestors. So much
dedication and hard work have brought about the renaissance we
dreamed of. It took devotion to our cause, stubborn perseverance,
personal and financial sacrifices and love of our Jewish tradition
that got us here. We are proud of the beautiful families, young and
old, who fill our synagogue with hope, enthusiasm and Yiddishe
nachas. We welcome them all with open arms, take pride in their
participation in our spiritual, educational and social activities
and look forward to the future, living in a warm, caring modern
Orthodox community whose commitment to Torah and Jewish
values continues to guide our lives.
We thank all the people on our Ad Journal and Dinner Committees
who said yes when asked to help and hope you will note their
service, especially Rabbi Hess, who did anything and everything to
ensure our success. We thank all of you who have come to honor
Sandi and Michael, Bobbie and Leonard and Sylvia and wish our
distinguished honorees many years of strength and good health to
continue their works of dedication and service. Have a wonderful
evening!

Tree, tree, how can I bless you? That your fruit may be sweet—you
are already sweet; that you should provide plenty of shade—you
already provide shade; that a spring may be near you--even that
you have. The one thing left which I can wish for you is that all trees
planted from your seed may be as fruitful as you. (Ta’anis 5b-6a)
We are privileged this evening to honor three families whose roots
have been so firmly planted within our Anshe Chesed community
that we nod approvingly at the Rabbinic teaching that the seeds
their ancestors planted have become as fruitful as them.
David & Anna Winetsky, parents of Sylvia Scheininger, Leonard
Neuringer’s mother, Paula, and Eva Cohen and David & Sara Parish,
great grandparents to Sandi Newman were all among the earlier
settlers in Linden.
And what became of the seeds they planted in Linden over 90
years ago? Sylvia served as first lady of the shul for three years as
her husband, Harold, was elected President. Her children remain
committed to serving and supporting synagogue life in Linden
and Washington DC. And her grandchildren still call Anshe Chesed
home.
Paula (may she live and be well), has seen her son serve almost
every executive role in the Synagogue while Leonard’s wife, Bobbie,
supported his endeavors and held down the fort at home.
Eva, David and Sara never met Sandi, but one could only imagine
the nachas they would feel to see Sandi, with her husband, Michael,
and the four girls roaming the halls of Anshe Chesed as 4th and
5th generation Lindenites.
I am fortunate to call each of you my friends and blessed to
celebrate your well-deserved honors. May you be blessed that all
the seeds you have planted will be as fruitful as you.

A MESSAGE FROM
The President
As we celebrate our 102nd anniversary, I find it appropriate that
we are recognizing five individuals in three very appropriate award
categories. All are reluctantly receiving a well-deserved and long
overdue honor for their commitment to the Shul and to the Linden
Jewish Community.
Michael and Sandi have been involved in the Shul since their
childhood. They met and wed at the shul and continue to devote
their time and energy volunteering in different ways. Most recently,
Sandi has worked tirelessly on the weekly kiddushim, while Michael
gave of his time to be an active participant on the Board of Directors
and function in the role of Recording Secretary. They not only set
an example for other Shul members, but they also practice what
they preach; they demonstrate to their children how one should
strive to be an active contributor, even if it means having to make
personal sacrifices. The Young Leadership Award is a befitting
honor for the Newman’s who are leading the young community
by setting a positive example – one we should all strive to emulate.
Leonard and Bobbie are another great example of a couple who
devotes so much of their time, energy, and money to the Shul. I
sometimes wonder how Leonard gets work done at his paying,
full-time job when he spends so much of his time dealing with
Shul matters. From his role as Treasurer of the Shul – in which
he’s always looking out for the financial wellbeing of the shul, to
being an extremely active member on the House Committee –
where he spends countless hours making repairs and working with
contractors and vendors to ensure a job done right. Leonard must
run on a clock that somehow gives him more than 24 hours in each
day! As the saying goes, “Behind every great man there’s a great
woman”, it’s without a doubt that Bobbie is a true aishes chayil,
woman of valor. She gives up having Leonard at home and tending
to their household and makes him available to share his talents and
gifts with the Shul. They are indeed both distinguished leaders!
Last but not least, I can’t think of anyone more fitting than Sylvia
Scheininger to be the recipient of the Legacy Award. Sylvia is a
long time member of the Shul and has been active in different
ways. She was involved with the Sisterhood and contributed
frequently with her articles in the Shofar. Her late husband, Harold,
served as President and was an active member of the Shul. Sylvia’s
extended family – her children, nieces, nephews, grandchildren
and greatgrandchildren, continue to be active members and
participants in the Shul. It’s a sight to see when this extended
family takes up two rows in Shul during the High Holiday services.
What a marvelous legacy to behold!
On behalf of the Congregation and the Anshe Chesed Board of
Directors, I wish our honorees a Mazal Tov and a Yasher Koach.
May you continue to go mechayil el chayil, from strength to strength,
and may others be inspired by your devotion and commitment.

This year, our Tribute Dinner honors the generations of Anshe
Chesed, dreamers all.
The first generation were immigrants who settled in a small town
with a dirt road, hired a Rabbi newly arrived from Poland. They
foretold the dream of a thriving synagogue devoted to religious
observance, spiritual growth, and loving kindness.
The next generation planted and nurtured that dream. They built a
great edifice on a grassy corner in the growing city, and established
a strong community that affirmed Jewish life and continuity. These
dreamers etched the words of the Mishna into our sanctuary: “On
the three pillars the world stands: on Torah, on service [of G-d],
and on acts of human kindness.”
Our generation thrusts this dream into the future. We are 130
families strong. We share vibrant prayer and Torah study, and
beautiful Shabbat and holiday celebrations. We built a Mikvah to
strengthen our families and our future. We provide support for
new families, the needy, elderly, and homebound. We show our
children a deep love of Judaism and its values, planting the seeds
for the next generation.
We lunch; we learn. We sing; we dance. We take joy in our
collaborative efforts, sharing the spirit of Klal Yisrael. L’dor Va’dor,
from generation to generation, we are living the dream.
