EDITOR’S
NOTES
Almost everyone in the Northwest who pays a little attention to
bike racing has heard of Adam Craig, Barry Wicks, Carl Decker,
Catharine Pendrel, Chris Horner, Chris Ragsdale, Erik Tonkin,
Geoff Kabush, Gillian Carleton, Jennie Reed, Jill Kintner, Kristin
Armstrong, Rhae Shaw, Russell Stevenson, Ryan Trebon, Ryder
Hesjedal, Spenser Paxson, Stephanie Roorda, Steve Smith, Steven
Beardsley, Svein Tuft, Tina Brubaker, Tyler Farrar and Zac Kovalcik,
to name a few. They all have been representing the region on the
national and international scene either in road, track, mountain bike,
BMX or cyclocross events,
they represent only a
... we chose a different tact, yet
fraction of the talent found
introducing some cyclists in the region, as there
from the next generation. are many others, many of
whom came before them.
A partial list would include
Alex Stieda, Alyson Sydor, Ann Knapp, Bill Wild, Brian Walton,
Bruce Spicer, Carl Leusenkamp, Cindy Devine, Craig Undem, Jerry
Baker, John Beckman, Karl Maxon, Rebecca Twigg, Roland Green,
Ron Hayman and Tom Broznowski, who all have written their name
in the record books.
Most of these competitors have inspired youngsters to follow in
their footsteps. Additionally, coaches and parents have been working
tirelessly to bring the next crop of talented Northwest cyclists — and
there are quite a few of them — up through the development pipeline.
Back in 2003, when we first published the NW Race Guide, we
featured mostly the top riders, those who animated the races and
those that found themselves on the podium on a regular basis. We
later moved on to feature Northwest teams, as very few standouts
rely solely on their own abilities to bring home victories. We felt
that the entire squad and those that support the sport should be
recognized as well.
This year we chose a different tactic, introducing some cyclists
from the next generation. You may not know the names yet, but
these up-and-coming racers and their coaches have their sights set
on leaving indelible marks on the Northwest, national and international racing landscape.
Unfortunately, there aren’t enough pages in the Race Guide to
introduce them all at once, so we’ll keep at it for a while.
There are a few people to thank before I let you get acquainted
with some of the region’s newest talents — Jim Anderson, Jim
Brown, Dave Campbell, Amara Edwards, Tricia Lawrence, Tara
Mowat, Larry A. Reynolds, Mike Ripley, Douglas Tobin and Martha
Walsh provided invaluable input and assistance in the preparation of
this year’s guide as well as the parents who choose to put their kids
on the start line of cycling races.
Now, go discover the future.
