Membrane Absorption Solution Chemistry:
NaOH
Scrubbing:
SO2 + 2NaOH → Na2SO3 +H2O (sodium sulfite)
Na2SO3 + 1/2 O2 → Na2SO4 (sodium sulfate)
Regeneration equations:
Na2SO4 + H2O → 2NaOH +H2SO4 (electrolysis)
KOH:
Scrubbing:
SO2 + 2KOH → K2SO3 +H2O (potassium sulfite)
K2SO3 + 1/2 O2 → K2SO4 (potassium sulfate)
Regeneration:
K2SO4 + H2O → 2KOH +H2SO4 (electrolysis)

● Eliminate Having to Clean the Wash Water
● Eliminate Dumping it Overboard
Traditional scrubber towers spray the absorption
solution - typically sea water or sodium hydroxide
(NaOH) - directly into the exhaust path.
The sulphur captured from the exhaust is
converted to suhphuric acid in the wash water, is
diluted, (Open Loop) and disposed of overboard.
Or converted to sulphites (Closed loop) and
discharged overboard.
The oils and particulate matter (PAH and
Turbidity) must be cleaned from the wash water
and stored as sludge to be disposed of ashore
