RABBINIC THOUGHTS
Almost every year since 1991, I take our Temple’s Confirmation Class to “the RAC,” our Reform movement’s Religious Action Center in
Washington, D.C. There were 2 years when we
weren’t able to go, but still that’s been 23
classes and some 350 students!
Why do I feel so passionate about this?
For more than 50 years, the Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism has been the hub of
Jewish social justice and legislative activity in Washington, D.C. As the DC office of the Union for
Reform Judaism, the RAC educates and mobilizes the Reform Jewish community on legislative
and social concerns, advocating on more than 70 different issues, including economic justice,
civil rights, religious liberty, Israel and more. As a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, the RAC's
advocacy work is completely non-partisan
and pursues public policies that reflect the
Jewish values of social justice that form the
core of our mandate.
When my mom was growing up in her
Reform Temple in Montreal, Rabbi Maurice
Eisendrath was the great advocate and
articulator of these themes, as the head of
the Reform movement. I was just a baby
when he marched with Dr. Martin Luther
King, Jr. and Rabbi Abrahahm Joshua
Heschel in Selma. As she and my dad
began to play leadership roles in our Toronto Temple, they supported the RAC’s work as mandated by the then Union of American Hebrew Congregations (UAHC) which became our Union
for Reform Judaism, whose 900+ congregations across North America now include 1.5 million
Reform Jews, and the Central Conference of American Rabbis (CCAR), whose membership includes more than 2,000 Reform rabbis.
Continued on page 5
5
Continued from Page 4
Representatives of these two organizations, as well as the Union’s affiliates, comprise the
Commission on Social Action of Reform Judaism, which governs the RAC’s policy positions. As
the social justice arm of the
Union and the CCAR, the RAC receives approximately 1/3 of its annual operating budget from
the Union, 1/3 from program fees, and 1/3 from contributions from individuals and
foundations.
The Religious Action Center is under the auspices of the Commission on Social Action of
Reform Judaism, a joint instrumentality of the Central Conference of American Rabbis and the
Union for Reform Judaism with its various affiliates: the American Conference of Cantors,
Association of Reform Zionists of America, National Association of Temple Administrators,
National Association of Temple Educators, Men of Reform Judaism, Women of Reform
Judaism, North American Federation of Temple Youth.
Every year, the L'Taken Seminars expose thousands of high school students to a variety of
public policy issues, Jewish values, and advocacy skills, culminating with a day of direct
advocacy with members of Congress on Capitol Hill. Here’s our 2014 Confirmation Class
“on the Hill.”
You don’t need me to tell you we are in the midst of a very important election season! Don’t
be discouraged, amidst the political fencing and fulminating! This year’s Confirmation Class
will make this pilgrimage later this month. As have been all their predecessors, they are eager
to make their voices heard and to make a difference! Here’s to them, our future!
L’Shalom,
Rabbi Garry Loeb
P.S. If you’d like to learn more about the important work the RAC is doin & help to support it,
go to www.rac.org .

TORAH SCHOOL
January will be a fun month in Torah School.
On Sunday January 24th we will be celebrating Tu B’shevat together at
Torah School. Oranges will be sliced up and sent downstairs to the
students in the classrooms. Parents and teachers will be asked to
sponsor the planting of trees in Israel through JNF. If you donate $18, a
tree is planted in your honor. You get a certificate from JNF, and your
name will go on our big tree downstairs. Sometimes classes like to chip
in and purchase a class tree.
After Torah School on Sunday January 24th, we will be holding our midyear teacher’s meeting and aide’s meeting. This is our “State of the Union” meeting where we reflect on the first half of the year, and make
adjustments and improvements to our school.
On Friday January 29th Rabbi Loeb will be taking the 10th grade down to
Washington DC for the annual RAC Trip. On this amazing trip, our 10th
graders will visit the Religious Action Center, learn about advocacy and
lobbying, and get to see the government in action in our nation’s capital. The RAC trip will return on Monday February 1st.
On Sunday January 31st, the 4th grade class will begin preparing for its
annual Shabbat by designing their own challah covers! In February they
will make their own Challah to go with their covers!

MENTSCH MAKERS
What a fabulous December we had!! We celebrated Hanukkah in a BIG way with our annual Family
Hanukkah Party on Wednesday evening, December 11th. Our very own social hall overflowed with Mentsch
Makers and their families. All of the children made beautiful Hanukkah foam memorabilia in the shape of a
dreidel or a star. Our delicious and yummy latkes were cooked with the finest ingredients. This year, Nikki
Shevitz, proprietor of Mush’s Cookies and a mom of 2 mentsches, donated the prettiest and most delicious
Hanukkah cookies. Other desserts were made by the “mentsch’s” (jello) and most importantly our jelly
donuts from Dunkin Donuts. We would also like to thank Kevin from Bagel World in Monroe for his
generosity in donating our dozens and dozens of bagels and also Bobby Lord for making our latkes. And….
I would also like to thank Rabbi Loeb for singing and celebrating with us and the entire staff of Mentsch Makers Pre-School for all of their help and “love” they put into our program. Our Hanukkah parties just keep getting better and better!!!
Throughout the weeks before Hanukkah, all of our classes from our “youngest” to the “oldest”
learned the story of Judah and the very brave Maccabees along with the miracle of the oil. We read
wonderful stories to the children, grated potatoes for latkes the good old fashioned way, and created
wonderful projects along with a special present for their family. We played dreidel with fruit loop cereal and
the children naturally picked “gimmel” to be their favorite.
We would also like to thank Jewish Federation of Orange County in conjunction with the Newburgh
JCC for their Hanukkah program held here on Monday, November 30 th. The children had such fun.
January is full of lots of winter fun and perhaps some snow!! Children have been creating snowflakes
and designing snow people. We use lots of white play dough and silver glitter for icicles. Please see our
project board as you go downstairs with a sample of monthly happenings.
Thinking about happenings: We had our 1st Pajama Tot Shabbat on November 20th which was a real
“hit”. We learned the blessings, made a stained glass wine cup, ate challah, sang and read a story on the
bima. We renamed Goodnight Moon to Shabbat Shalom Moon. No evening would be complete without a
great oneg. What a great night!! Guess what….. we will have another Tot Shabbat called Silly Hat on January
22nd at 5:00pm. Please join us. More info to come.
We are beginning to schedule our Health and Safety visitors for the month of February. If you have
an occupation to share with us, please give me a call.
As a reminder, we do follow the Monroe Woodbury School District’s policy for snow days. Please
refer to your Parent Manuel for specifics. The voice mail to call after 7:30am to check the status of Mentsch
Makers if you are unsure is 783-2626 ext 15 or visit the Mentsch Makers website: mentschmakers@monroetemple.org. We will be sending out our winter weather policy shortly.
Registration for the 2015-16 school year will begin shortly. If you would like to be part of the
Mentsch Makers family, know a family who is interested in our program or volunteer in one of our classes,
please contact the temple office or Mentsch Makers. Mentsch Makers in the Summertime will once again
offer a 3 or 4 day option with lots of sprinkler fun for our children entering the 3 or 4 year old classes and our
Tiny Tots in the Summertime for our incoming 2’s with a fabulous 2 day a week program.
Hoping that 2016 will be a healthy and peaceful year for you and your families.
B’Shalom,
Carol Berman, Director

SISTERHOOD/WRJ
A New Year is upon us and Sisterhood looks forward to the endless possibilities
that lay ahead.
We had great success and participation in our second annual Chanukah cookie
program. Both children and adults had a wonderful time baking and decorating
their own Chanukah treats. We look forward to making this an annual Sisterhood
tradition.
On January 11, 2016 Sisterhood will be hosting our first Rosh Chodesh of the new
year. The theme will be delicious "Soups for Your Soul" and a discussion about
our thoughts, dreams and goals for 2016. This event will take place at Lisa Friedman, Sisterhood Co-Presidents home at 26 Prestwick Drive, Monroe. We will kick
things off at 6:30PM. Please RSVP via phone at 845-837-1000 or by
email: woobie512@yahoo.com by January 6th 2016. Soup and crackers will be
served.
A giant thank you to Shelly Sherman, Beth Cook and Ann Fink for their hard work
and for keeping our Judaica Shop open additional days and hours for your holiday
needs.
A loving farewell to Wendy Balentine and family as they transition to their new
home in Maryland. We will miss her dedication and years of effort to help make
Sisterhood a success.
We extend a warm, happy and healthy new year to our entire Monroe Temple
family
Let's sparkle this new year.

RABBI SEARCH COMMITTEE UPDATE
DECEMBER 2015
Your Rabbi Search Committee (RSC) is on schedule and continues to make
progress towards finding a successor for Rabbi Loeb. Since our application was sent in to the
CCAR (Central Conference of American Rabbis) in August, to date, we've received applications
and personal statements from 9 eligible Rabbis from across the country. Resumes from the
newly -ordained will not be sent to us until late December, with interviews scheduled in
February, according to CCAR regulations and guidelines. We screened these applications and,
from this group of candidates, we chose to conduct a Skype interview with 6. In order for us
to make fair comparisons, we posed the same basic questions to each candidate. We chose
our questions based on feedback from the congregational survey. What emerged from these
50 to 60 minute interviews was an introduction to the candidates’ character and unique
attributes, worship, pastoral and engagement practices, teaching and leadership experiences.
We also inquired about each candidate’s readiness and motivation for seeking out the
Monroe Temple. Out of the 6 candidates, we narrowed our selection down to 3 and asked
them back for a second round Skype interview, this time asking the candidates more specific,
detailed questions. We were impressed by all 3, and decided to invite them all back for an
initial, in -person interview with the search committee and some administrative members of
the Temple. These interviews will take place in the next month or two. Following these
in -person interviews, and after screening any new prospects, we will then narrow down our
final candidates and proceed from there.
We expect that we will continue to receive resumes from additional,
well-qualified and promising candidates during the next two months. We will
continue to keep you informed as we move along! Again, we encourage you to reach out to
either Pam Levine or Janice Kiviat , Co-Chairs of the committee, or to any committee member
with any questions, comments or concerns as our
process moves forward. Our email address is mtrabsearch@gmail.com, or leave a message
with the temple office at 783-2626 and your call will be returned.
Happy Chanukah to all!!

MEN’S ACTION CLUB
Shalom
We hope everybody enjoyed Chanukkah with their family and friends.
MAC would like to thank Dr. Adam Kalkstein for his informative
presentation on climate change. The presentation was well attended
and everyone learned a good deal about our world and how to help
protect it for future generations.
It looks like our Fantasy Football bragging rights will be owned by Jay
Stonefield, Eric Barbanel, Brian Gamzon and the combination of Joe
Birnbaum/Mark Kiviat. They seem to have made all the right moves
and are the clear leading teams headed into the playoffs.
Don’t forget you still have some time left to purchase a Super Bowl box
to support our College Scholarship fund.
We look forward to seeing you at our upcoming meeting on January
10th in the library. It’s never too late to join MAC and we’d love to have
you attend our upcoming paid up member dinner in February.
L' shalom
Adam and Eric

Celebrating Milestone Memberships!
On Friday, November 20th, Monroe Temple Beth-El was privileged to honor select members for attaining their 25th, 40th and 50th+ member anniversaries with our temple. Following
a special pre-Shabbat dinner, the honorees were called to the bimah during services for
recognition by the entire congregation and received a special blessing by Rabbi Loeb and
Cantor Goldmann. Following services, the gala event continued with a lavish oneg.
We recognize with gratitude the extraordinary gifts each of the honorees have brought to
our sacred community -- gifts of mind and heart, time and spirit, and financial generosity
that built and continues to help sustain Temple Beth El.
