Itinerary (Included Meals: B-Breakfast L-Lunch D-Dinner) Tuesday, October 18 Miami (D) Depart for Miami, Florida and transfer to the Hyatt Regency Coral Gables hotel. We will have a welcome reception and our Tauck Director’s briefing about tomorrow’s charter flight to Havana and the start of our educational exchange trip to Cuba. Wednesday, October 19 Miami-Havana ( B,L,D) Bienvenidos A La Habana! Our Cuba travel begins as we board our charter flight to Havana’s Marti International Airport where our Cuban guide greets us. We will drive to the Museum of the Revolution, housed in the neo-Classical building that has served as Cuba’s Presidential Palace from 1920-1959, for our first People to People cultural exchange in Cuba. Our home for the next five nights, the Melia Habana Hotel is located in the city’s Miramar section. After settling into your Royal Service Room, we attend a discussion on U.S.–Cuban relations at our hotel. This evening a drive along Havana’s seaside Malecon to a local restaurant for tonight’s dinner orienting us with Cuba’s enigmatic capital city. En route we will stop at the iconic Plaza de la Revolucion dominated by a tower honoring 19th century Cuban patriot Jose Marti. Embark on a guided walking tour through Habana Vieja, the city’s nearly 500-year old heart, now a pedestrian-only UNESCO World Heritage Site. See Havana’s beautiful Catedral de San Cristobal, begun under the Jesuits in 1748 and completed by the Franciscans in 1777. At Projecto Muraleando, a barrio community art project featuring murals and sculptures crafted from found items, discuss the projects history and its impact with its artists and the community members who benefit from this project. After lunch we arrive at Habana Compas, a thriving Havana dance and cultural performance group. Enjoy a demonstration of dance and music. This evening dinner is included at leisure at a choice of hotel restaurants. Friday, October 21 Cuban Baseball, Crafts & More (B,L,D) Today’s People to People program in Havana begins with a close-up look at a cultural passion shared by Cubans and Americans alike, the sport of baseball! After a morning discussion about the history and traditions of baseball in Cuba with highly regarded Cuban ballplayers, we head out to meet players, coaches and parents of a local Little League baseball team. This afternoon enjoy free time relaxing at our hotel or visiting Havana’s bustling San Jose crafts market, housed in historic, restored warehouses built in the 1880’s. Tonight, dinner is at a Havana paladar, one of Cuba’s many private homes. Saturday, October 22 Agriculture in Pinar Del Rio & Vinales (B,L,D) This morning we travel outside Havana to Pinar del Rio for a demonstration of and discussion about the production process of Cuba’s most famous item, Cuban cigars at a cigar factory. We continue across the countryside to the tobacco fields of the Vinales Valley where we will meet with agriculture workers about agrarian life in today’s Cuba. After lunch in a restaurant set among the mogotes, we will meet the workers who process tobacco leaves before they reach the factory at El Despalillo. Sunday, October 23 Hemingway’s Cuba & Centro Habana (B,L,D) Today we will walk with a local historian through Havana’s Colon Cemetery, one of the largest in the world and the final resting place of noted Cubanos from all walks of life. We will depart the city for Finca Vigia (“Lookout Farm”), American novelist Ernest Heminways’s winter home from 1939 to 1960. See the author’s 9,000-volume library, his beloved yacht ”Pilar”, and his typewriter. Talk with a docent about his life and his strong connection to Cuba and its people (who simply called him “Ernesto”). Lunch today is in a cooking class where you will learn to prepare authentic ropa vieja, a Cuban national dish, and make your own savory mojito. Later we will engage with students and staff at Havana’s La Casa del Nino y la Nina (House of the Boy & Girl), a community-sponsored educational outreach program for children in the Centro Habana neighborhood of Cavo Hueso. This evening we have a farewell rooftop reception and dinner at Parque Central in Havana. Sunday, October 24 Journey Home (B) This morning transfer to Havana’s airport for our included return charter flight to Miami where Tauck’s Cuba People to People educational exchange program ends. Continue to our connecting flight to our home cities. Cost Per Person Double Occupancy $5,890 Single Occupancy $6,611 A deposit of $800 per person is due with your reservation.
