My family and I spent two weeks in Fiji and, from the time we arrived until the time we left, we wanted to come back. At 9.07am on 2 May 2013, the new pool (now the adults retreat pool) was opened to guests and we were the first to “try it out”. The workmen in the background tell the story well; we were the very first to swim in the new pool as they put the finishing touches on the landscaping and bubbles. Our hats come off to all who worked so hard to have it ready while we were on holiday. Story Email entries to mystory-sp@wyn.com e’ve all been there. All those exciting months of planning and booking, the packing and anticipation of things to come. Then the big day arrives. All the last-minute hustle and bustle before you jump in the car and start the infamous road trip arguments. “How long till we’re there? I’m hungry. My Nintendo has gone flat.” But then you see it. The first road sign indicating you are on the final path to your much-awaited destination. De-stressing is so easy when you take the simplistic style and spaciousness of your WorldMark apartment with you on every holiday. The kids slip very swiftly into their traditional swim in the pool – five seconds after the car is unpacked – whilst the parents set things up for that home away from home feel. Wine and beer unpacked into the fridge, kids bags shoved into their rooms – then it’s our turn to head to the pool for a few hours. It’s the same every holiday except for one thing – the location changes. The peace of mind of consistent service and quality no matter where you go and yet every holiday is different. Different views, restaurants to visit and people to meet. New friends to be made and old friends found again… But as the well-worn expression predicts, all good things must come to an end. The long awaited holiday has now started nearing the end. Our family has been here before. But never again. We decided there are two ways to ensure we don’t suffer from post holiday depression ever again. A – never take holidays again or B – perpetual holidaying. The Hodge family love the feeling of perpetual holidays! “What?” I hear you say. Perpetual holidaying? You’re just making that up. Correct, I did. And it’s the best thing we ever did. It’s simple (well it is if you’re a WorldMark Owner). All you have to do is ensure you have your next holiday booked before your current one is over. So now whenever you near the end of your holiday – you start looking forward to your next one. Of course we’ve taken it to the extreme. Hunter Valley this weekend, two weeks in Port Douglas and Cairns in September/ October, followed by a week in Fiji in November. And to top it off, we’ve taken advantage of borrowing next year’s Credits to book next year’s holiday – eight nights in the beautiful Wyndham Vacation Resorts Asia Pacific Coffs Harbour – Treetops. Wy Raising the Bar Resort REPORT Words by Sarah Meredith I was lucky enough to experience the magic of Port Douglas on my getaway to the jewel of Tropical North Queensland. This glamorous resort village welcomed me with open arms – offering incredible natural beauty, delicious gourmet food and an abundance of activities. Help save the environment while on holidays by hanging out your towels to dry during the day, then reusing them. This simple step makes a big difference in conserving energy and water. not in use. Watch the drop: Take shorter showers, don’t leave the tap running while you brush your teeth, use the dishwasher on a full load and wash a full load of clothes in cold water on the eco setting. Reduce your use: Always recycle where possible to ensure minimal waste. By conserving energy, saving water and reducing waste on holiday, you will be helping to decrease costs at Club resorts, which in turn also helps to keep your levy payments to a minimum. NEWSFLASH! Wyndham Worldwide has been recognised by the US Department of Energy for innovative sustainability best practices by achieving an 8% energy reduction across nearly 1,000,000sqm. Story Continues The stunning Great Barrier Reef. If you prefer an active holiday, there is a gym, a tour desk to help you arrange tours and cruises, plus Four Mile Beach is just a short stroll away. I took advantage of this by starting my mornings with a walk along the shore, splashing my feet in the warm surf. The recently refurbished accommodation is spacious and well equipped. Choose from hotel rooms and self-contained one and two-bedroom apartments featuring a stylish, natural colour palette and plantation shutters. Port Douglas is home to some of the finest dining experiences in Australia, exciting animal attractions and a host of activities. Whether you’re looking for a gentle change of pace or an exhilarating adventure, I happily discovered that this magnificent holiday destination caters for both. You can keep busy with swimming, diving, snorkelling, fishing, jungle surfing and croc spotting or simply enjoy lazy days on the sun-drenched beaches and retail therapy along Macrossan Street. 6 things to do in Port Douglas 1. Great Barrier Reef The Great Barrier Reef stretches for more than 2,300 kilometres and boasts 400 types of coral and 1,500 species of fish. Explore this natural museum on an Outer Barrier Reef tour with Quicksilver Cruises. Quicksilver’s wavepiercing catamaran travels to Agincourt Reef, where you can scuba dive, snorkel, or stay dry in the semi-submersible or underwater observatory. Fast Fact: The Great Barrier Reef Marine Park covers an area of 348,000 square kilometres, which is larger than the total area of the state of Victoria. 2. Daintree Rainforest Home to more than 3,000 plant species, the Daintree Rainforest is a pristine environment that is loved for fishing, crocodile spotting, hiking and four-wheel-driving. Cape Tribulation, which is located 34 kilometres north of Daintree Village, is well worth a visit to see the rainforest meet the reef. Jungle surfing is an exciting way to explore the rainforest’s tropical beauty on a fun zipline flying fox through the rainforest canopy. Fast Fact: The Daintree Rainforest is over 135 million years old. Main: Ramada Port Douglas is surrounded by tropical rainforest. Above left to right: Soar over the rainforest on the Skyrail Cableway; the resort’s resident cockatoo; the large open plan Reception area brings the outdoors in. I arrived in Cairns to warm, sunny weather and promptly hired a car to take the easy one-hour drive north to Port Douglas. The drive along the Captain Cook Highway is spectacular, so I took my time to stop along the way. My first pit stop was the Skyrail Rainforest Cableway, which spans seven-and-a-half kilometres across lush tropical rainforest. As I journeyed to Kuranda, gliding high above the treetops and into the heart of the Barron Gorge National Park, I was mesmerised by panoramic views of the rainforest and the Coral Sea, accompanied by the song of exotic birds. Following this beautiful rainforest experience, I was eager to pull over in Palm Cove to see the hype surrounding this tiny oceanside haven. Private and peaceful, Palm Cove boasts a picture-perfect beach lined with palm trees and it is an idyllic spot to just relax. As I continued driving along the coastal road to Port Douglas, I had my final stop at Rex Lookout to admire the stunning vista of Trinity Bay and the Coral Sea. Driving into Port Douglas along Port Douglas Road, the prominent Ramada Resort signage made it easy to find Wyndham Vacation Resorts Asia Pacific at Ramada Port Douglas. Upon arrival, I was greeted by the resident cockatoo and friendly Reception team, who kindly offered me a chilled face cloth and bottled water – a welcome treat considering I was travelling on the cusp of summer. I found this WorldMark resort very appealing. I particularly loved the spacious open plan Reception area, which connects you to the outdoors, and the resort team’s attentive hospitality. The unique tropical surroundings are unlike any other resort in town. Ramada Port Douglas is set amongst a pocket of Melaleuca rainforest and lush gardens, with the swaying fronds on tall trees and free flowing waterways filled with large barramundi creating a tranquil atmosphere. There is no better place to escape than Ramada Port Douglas. The relaxing resort facilities include a heated lagoon style pool with waterfall and swim up bar, day spa and Tree Bar and Grill Restaurant. I dined at the onsite restaurant three times during my stay and each meal was simply sensational. The standout though was the wild North Queensland barramundi served with crab and lemon potato cake, bok choy and mango and lychee salsa for dinner – the summery flavours were so fresh that I found myself savouring each mouthful. Succumb to relaxation at the resort’s day spa, which boasts nine treatment rooms, an infrared sauna, steam room and two vichy rooms. There is a range of skincare, body and beauty services available including massages, facial therapies, pedicure, manicure and packages. 3. Sunday Markets Established almost 20 years ago, the Sunday Markets are held every Sunday from 8am to 1.30pm in Anzac Park. The markets provide local goods including fresh tropical fruit, exotic flowers, arts and crafts, pottery, glassware, jewellery, and unique Australian souvenirs. 4. Hartley’s Crocodile Adventures See the fascinating domain of the saltwater crocodile at Hartley’s Crocodile Adventures. This family-friendly attraction features crocodile and koala feeding, snake handling, wetland boat rides and wildlife presentations. 5. sailaway sunset sail Experience peace and relaxation onboard Sailaway’s Sunset Sail, which glides along the coastline off Port Douglas as the sun sets over the Coral Sea. 6. Mossman Gorge Clockwise from top: Delicious dining at Tree Bar and Grill; the Sunday Markets boast beautiful jewellery; the recently refurbished accommodation has a sleek look; pick up fresh produce at the Sunday Markets. Story Continues 10 QUEENSLAND’S JEWEL The laid-back town of Mossman is best known for Mossman Gorge, where the Mossman River tumbles over huge granite boulders, creating cool freshwater swimming holes. There are fantastic bush walks to enjoy. Fast Fact: Mossman Gorge is home to the Kuku Yalanji people, the traditional owners of the area. Have breakfast with the birds at Wildlife Habitat. UNDERSTANDING Of course, Port Douglas is most famous for the two World Heritage-listed natural attractions on its doorstep: the Daintree Rainforest and the Great Barrier Reef. The highlight for me was snorkelling in the largest coral reef in the world – so vast it can be seen from space! I was in awe of the Great Barrier Reef’s breathtaking underwater wonderland of unique coral and vibrant marine life, and highly recommend it to anyone planning a holiday to Port Douglas. From the sophisticated, yet relaxed village atmosphere that instantly makes you feel like you’re on holiday, to the beautiful sights of the reef and rainforest, I can’t wait to spend more time in lovely Port Douglas. the DIFFERENCE A Here is your quick guide to help you understand the difference between the two sessions and what benefits you will get from both. Four Mile Beach. Mossman Gorge. The view of Four Mile Beach from Flagstaff Hill Lookout. fter speaking with many WorldMark Owners, we have noticed there is some confusion between Owner Education and Owner Updates. Refer to page 2. 12 QUEENSLAND’S JEWEL ort Douglas in Tropical North Queensland tops my bucket-list of must-visit Aussie destinations. While I love to relax while on holidays, I’m also a big fan of unique activities, so I’ll definitely be stopping at the Wildlife Habitat to enjoy their famous ‘Breakfast with the Birds’. Here you can experience a tropical breakfast buffet while up close and personal with tawny frogmouth owls, black cockatoos and brightly coloured lorikeets. As the birds would tell you, there’s no better way to take in Port Douglas’ incredible surrounds than from the air, so I plan to book a sunrise hot air balloon tour to take in views of the reef and the majestic Atherton Tablelands. Of course a trip to this special part of the world would not be complete without a visit to the Great Barrier Reef, and for something different, I plan to sail out to the Agincourt Ribbon Reefs to swim with dwarf minke whales (they are common between March and October with peak season from July to September). Hartley’s Crocodile Adventures, white water rafting, Cape Tribulation, the Daintree Rainforest and Mossman Gorge are also on my list of Port Douglas adventures... so I think I will need a week. Spring is an ideal time to go and Ramada Port Douglas is the perfect launch pad for your adventure of a lifetime... what are we waiting for? Meet you there! Glenn and Siggy Covill from Brisbane, met through a friend on a day trip to Stradbroke Island in Queensland. Shortly afterwards, Siggy had to fly back to her home in England, but she and Glenn kept in touch. Not having the funds to fly to England, Club Owner Glenn turned to Wyndham for help. “I called the Travel Club to see what they could do for me. After a little planning I used all my existing Credits and borrowed Credits to purchase return flights to England for three-and- a-half weeks,” said Glenn. “Eight months later in April 2009, we exchanged our vows and have been happily married ever since, enjoying many breaks using our Credits,” he continued. Many happy wishes to Glenn and Siggy from the team at Wyndham. highlife S elected Privileges by Wyndham Platinum members experienced a weekend of unforgettable luxury during the inaugural Privileges Platinum 100 Club event, which took place on 31 May to 3 June 2013 on the beautiful Gold Coast. Story Continues wyndham’s global growth 23 Destinations Magazine chatted to Barry Robinson, CEO and Managing Director of Wyndham Vacation Resorts Asia Pacific and Managing Director of Wyndham Hotel Group in the South Pacific, about Wyndham’s global growth and what it means for the WorldMark South Pacific Club. LODGING VACATION EXCHANGE AND RENTAL VACATION OWNERSHIP Destinations: How has Wyndham’s global expansion helped to grow the resort destinations in the WorldMark South Pacific Club? Barry Robinson: When Wyndham Hotel Group expanded its operations into the South Pacific in 2009, it presented Wyndham Vacation Resorts Asia Pacific with a great opportunity. We were able to strategically partner with our sister company to provide even more opportunities for the WorldMark South Pacific Club. In 2010, we began to acquire mixed-use properties in partnership with Wyndham Hotel Group. Our first acquisition of this kind was Wyndham Vacation Resorts Asia Pacific Surfers Paradise. These types of mixed-use resorts offer dedicated accommodation to both Vacation Owners and hotel guests. It is a successful expansion model, which has enabled us to grow the Club’s resort portfolio rapidly into iconic and desirable locations including Surfers Paradise and Port Douglas in Queensland and Phillip Island in Victoria. It has also recently provided us with the opportunity to commence development of a brand new property in the Melbourne CBD. Destinations: What kind of expansion has Wyndham Hotel Group been experiencing globally? Barry Robinson: Wyndham Hotel Group’s global operations have been expanding rapidly. In fact, Wyndham added more gross rooms to its development slate last year than during any year in the company’s history. As of 31 December 2012, the group had approximately 930 hotels and 110,700 rooms in the pipeline, of which 59% were new construction and 56% were outside the United States. As of 30 June 2013, Wyndham had approximately 7,410 hotels and over 635,100 rooms in its portfolio. Wyndham Hotel Group has iconic brands and hotel choices spanning every category, from upscale to economy. The company prides itself on providing hotel guests with exceptional customer service and great value. Wyndham Hotel Group brands include Wyndham® Hotels and Resorts, Ramada®, Days Inn®, Super 8®, Wingate by Wyndham®, Baymont Inn & Suites®, Microtel Inn & Suites by Wyndham®, Hawthorn Suites® by Wyndham, TRYP by WyndhamTM, Howard Johnson®, Travelodge® in the USA and Knights Inn®. The company also has a license agreement to franchise the Planet Hollywood® Hotels and Night® brands and provide management services globally. Select brands have been identified for growth in the South Pacific including Days Inn, Night, TRYP by Wyndham, Planet Hollywood Hotels and Ramada. The company’s loyalty program, Wyndham Rewards®, is the largest in the hospitality industry based on the number of participating hotels, and has nearly seven million active members. Destinations: What kind of growth has Wyndham Vacation Ownership seen globally? Destinations: What’s next? Barry Robinson: Wyndham Worldwide continues to be recognised as one of the most diverse, greenest and best performing hospitality companies in the industry. In 2012, the company was named FORTUNE Magazine’s Most Admired Company in the hospitality industry for a second consecutive year and was also ranked among the top 100 greenest companies in the US by Newsweek Magazine. Between 2009 and 2012, Wyndham Worldwide’s share price experienced 12 times the growth compared to Apple, who experienced six times the growth in the same period. Wyndham Worldwide has really paved its strong future by being the only hospitality company in the world to offer Vacation Ownership, hotel accommodation, holiday rentals and exchange networks under its three key business arms: Wyndham Vacation Ownership, Wyndham Hotel Group, and Wyndham Exchange & Rentals. In the Asia Pacific, we will continue to grow and look for opportunities to add more destinations to our resort portfolio and continually enhance the Vacation Ownership experience for our Owners. It is certainly an exciting time to be a WorldMark Owner. It is certainly an exciting time to be a WorldMark Owner. Barry Robinson: Wyndham Vacation Ownership has also seen incredible growth in the past year with the acquisition of Shell Vacations Club increasing its Owner base to close to a million Owners. Wyndham Vacation Ownership now has over 185 resorts throughout the United States, Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean and the South Pacific that represent approximately 23,000 individual Vacation Ownership units, making it the world’s largest Vacation Ownership company.
