CLUB PURPOSE
The objectives of the Badger
Golden Retriever Club are to:
Encourage members to
perfect, by selective breeding,
sound Golden retrievers and to
do all possible to develop and
promote their natural ability
and quality, while still
maintaining their exceptionally
good dispositions;
Urge members and breeders
to accept the standard of the
breed as approved by the
American Kennel Club, as the
only standard of excellence by
which Golden retrievers shall
be judged;
Do all in its power to protect
and advance the interests of
the breed by encouraging
sportsmanlike competition at
dog shows, field trials,
obedience trials, and tracking
tests;
Conduct sanctioned and
licensed specialty shows, field
trials, and tracking tests under
the rules of the American
Kennel Club and WC/WCX
tests under the rules of the
GRCA; and
Support and further the
interests of the Golden
Retriever Club of America.

Introducing Your
2006 BGRC Board
(continued from previous issue)
This issue profiles the directors,
Betty Welsch, John Stoller, Sue
Freeman, and John Brandt.
Betty Welsch currently serves as
conformation director and has a
rich history with BGRC. She was a
member back in the 70’s when
Badger was a relatively new club.
One of her fondest memories was
when she and Ellen Manke served
on the board and suggested the
club take on a new activity – a fun
match. She and Ellen felt this was
an important activity to advance
the club so they made it happen –
they prepared the food, planned
the match, and pulled off what
turned out to be a great success
and the beginning of many
subsequent activities that we now
take for granted as club activities.
Betty returned to Wisconsin from
Florida where she and her
husband lived for 7 years. They
were active in the Mid-Florida
Golden Retriever Club as well as
an all breed club.
Betty began her “dog career” in the
early 70’s with Labs. She admired
Goldens for how they worked and
showed. Her first Goldens were
not from serious breeders but then
Topbrass Durango Brave entered
her life. Rango was an excellent
dog and Betty and Rango
achieved many things together. He
was an American and Canadian
Champion, an Outstanding Sire,
and achieved CDX, Canadian CD,
and WC titles. One of Betty’s
favorite memories of Rango is
playing “catch” with him. He would
lie on the floor, Betty would roll a
tennis ball to him, and he would
push it back to her with his nose.
Rango was “the smartest dog” and
is remembered in her heart and
memorialized in a large oil painting
in her home. Betty loved doing
conformation and field work with
Rango.

Membership
Meeting Minutes
March 12, 2006
The meeting was held at Western
Waukesha County Dog Training
Club in Ixonia, Wisconsin, and
called to order by Vice-President
Sandi Haessler at 8:00 pm. The
meeting followed a potluck dinner
and rally demonstration presented
by Sue Darsch from the Greater
Milwaukee Poodle Club.
Approximately a dozen handlers
and their dogs ran the rally course
and received feedback from Sue.
Secretary’s Report: Bill McEachern
reported that GRCA and AKC have
received updated officer and board
information. Since some members
were not able to stay for the
general meeting, McEachern
recommended tabling approval of
the November 20 and February 5
general membership minutes until
the next meeting. McEachern
announced the following based on
correspondence received by the
secretary:
• Badger Kennel Club asked for
donations to defray the costs
of scholarships and prizes for
their May 2006 Top Junior
Competition.
• Sheboygan Kennel Club is
presenting a program for
breeders by Myra Savant,
neonatal intensive care
registered nurse and author of
Canine Reproduction and
Whelping and Puppy Intensive
Care on April 2. McEachern
has several registration forms
if any members are interested
in attending.
• AKC has approved the August
12 Hunt Test application and
judges.
• A clicker training seminar for
conformation will be held at the
Animal Inn Training Center in
Lake Elmo, Minnesota, on
April 1.

• BGRC received a mail request
for information on books and
publications on Golden
Retrievers.
Treasurer’s Report: Joan Kaml
reported an increase in the club’s
cash balance due to a successful
specialty. A full financial report will
be presented when final numbers
are available.
President’s Report: No report.
Committee Reports:
Specialty 2006: Joan Kaml
reported for Edell Schaefer and
thanked everyone for a successful
specialty. Joan noted that several
changes will affect specialty
expenses next year. These include
an increase in facility rent and
doubling the rental space. The
board will consider strategies such
as charging for grooming space to
offset costs. Joan also announced
the need for a volunteer to run the
raffle next year.
In response to questions regarding
the 2007 specialty, Joan noted that
the date was set – March 2 and 3,
2007. Edell has volunteered to
serve as show chair. Joan briefly
summarized the cost for judges
and suggested the need to
consider the cost-benefit of having
multiple judges each day, given
the number of entries.
Some exhibitors expressed
concern about the amount of time
it took to get photos done at the
end of the show. The delay is due
in part to the use of digital
photography that allows for
multiple shots until the exhibitor is
pleased with the results. The board
will discuss photography options
and make a recommendation for
the future.
The trend toward fewer entries is a
cause for concern and several
suggestions were made for future
consideration:

• Contract with only one judge
per day and consider having
the obedience judges also do
rally.
• Place an ad in Front & Finish to
promote the fact that extra
space will be available at the
2007 specialty.
• Limit the entry.
• Consider opening up the show
to all breeds. BGRC could do
this on Friday and give priority
to Goldens. Jean Taylor
suggested doing the specialty
first, then opening the show to
all breeds as a separate trial.
• Open rally to all breeds.
The board will investigate the
feasibility of the suggestions and
make a recommendation regarding
the structure of the 2007 specialty.
Sandi Haessler asked whether
other show sites were under
consideration. Joan responded
that the club runs the risk of losing
a venue if we change locations
from year-to-year. It was noted that
a new sports complex is being built
in Jefferson in the vicinity of Hwys
43 and 164.
Membership: New members Linda
Clemens, Jan Nyland, and Sandy
Flaaten were unanimously voted in
as full members.
Meetings/Programs: Meeting
locations for May 21, September
17, and November 12 are
confirmed. The May 21 meeting
will be an obedience and
conformation fun night at Animal
Motel. Sandy Stoller reported that
she booked the Thunder Bay Grille
for the annual awards
banquet/brunch on Sunday,
February 4, 2007.
Breeder Referral: Pat Smith
submitted a written report related
to activity on the BGRC messaging
system. Pat reported 19 inquiries
were received since the beginning
of the year. Some callers were
seeking specific breeders, two
were looking for older dogs, and
three were seeking club
information as a follow-up to the
newspaper ad. The January 15
breeder referral application
deadline has been extended and
information was reprinted in the
February/March newsletter.
Field: Joan Kaml reported that the
Hunt Test premiums can be
prepared early so we can promote
the events at other shows. Fun
Field days are scheduled for April
16 and 22 at Ottawa Field Trial
Grounds.
Obedience: No report.
Conformation: No report.
Old Business: None
New Business: Pat Smith
complimented Bill McEachern and
Joan Kaml for their work on the
newsletter and specialty,
respectively. Pat also reported that
some people have asked why
BGRC does not have a presence
at events such as Pet Expo, State
Fair, etc. Pat volunteered to
represent the club at selected
events if the club wishes to pursue
this.
Pat reported that Sharon
Rosenkoetter’s family (Hillside
Goldens) lost their home in a fire
about a month ago. The family and
dogs are fine. Pat will post an
announcement on BadgerGold to
solicit donations to help the family.
Pat also reported that dog handler
Bonnie Barry recently passed
away from injuries received while
working her dogs. Donations to
care for her seven dogs are
welcome.
Next Meeting Date: The next
general membership meeting is an
obedience and conformation fun
night on Sunday, May 21 at 5:30
pm. at Animal Motel. A chili dump
is under consideration as an

alternative to the potluck dinner.

A quorum was present. The board
discussed a variety of issues
related to the 2007 specialty
including the possibility of charging
for grooming space and changing
the venue. The board is also
exploring options for photography.
The Thunder Bay Grille has been
reserved for the annual awards
banquet on February 4, 2007.
New business included a
discussion of our presence at area
dog events, improving awareness
and usage of our video collection,
providing additional choices for
BGRC clothing.
The board will review achievement
awards and trophy policies as well
as the entry fees for hunt tests at
the next meeting.
The next board meeting is
Wednesday, June 28, at 6:30 pm
at the Brookfield Public Library.
Members are welcome to attend
board meetings but due to space
limitations should contact a board
member in advance.

2006 BGRC Board

Betty has almost thirty years of
experience handling and breeding
Goldens and has bred many
champions and obedience dogs.
As a breeder, Betty’s goal is to
develop well-rounded pups that
reflect the natural abilities of the
Golden. She receives a great deal
of satisfaction hearing from owners
who contact her to brag about their
dogs. Her kennel name,
Thunderwater, is based on a
Western/Indian theme and her
maiden name.
Betty is a great fan of Cesar Millan,
host of “The Dog Whisperer
“television show on The Animal
Planet. She admires his

Betty currently has four Goldens
ranging in age from 8 months to 7
years. She is showing Willie,
Thunderwater On The Road Again,
in puppy class and, when he turns
one, plans to do obedience with
him.
John Stoller has been a member
since 1981 and currently serves as
field director. John has been very
active over the years, serving on
the board, representing the club at
the Wisconsin State Fair’s World of
Dogs, and chairing the hunt test for
the past 2 years.
John has been handling Goldens
for 25 years and it shows in his
many accomplishments. John
currently competes in field and
obedience and, years ago, also
showed in the conformation ring.
John cited putting a Senior Hunter
title on Scooter in the late 90’s as
one of his proudest and most
challenging accomplishments. It’s
challenging not only because of
the complexity of the exercises
and the dog handling required but
also because there are few
chances for mistakes. John put his
first OTCH on Snickers in 1986
Page 5
and has also put UDX and WCX
titles on dogs.
When asked what accounts for his
success with his dogs, John
unequivocally points to bonding
with each of them as key to their
working and competing together.
John’s strategy for training is to
begin with field work to build up the
dog’s enthusiasm and interest,
then to move to obedience to
refine skills, and finally, to return to
field work to develop abilities in the
more complex exercises.
This bonding and training pays off
in unanticipated ways. John
shared a story involving Snickers,
his second Golden and first OTCH
dog, that proves it’s not all about
ring performance. John and
Snickers were field training one
day. When John returned to the
car, he realized he didn’t have his
car keys. They were “out there” in
the field somewhere. He gave his
trusty Snickers the scent, told him
“find it,” and off went Snickers,
returning from the field a short time
later with keys in tow!
Currently, John is working toward
Open and Senior Hunter titles with
3 year old Willie, his (almost)
youngest dog. Willie and John
have won 3 High in Trial awards
since our March specialty and tied
in another 3. Cash wins the honor
of youngest dog at the Stoller
household by two weeks. The
oldest of Stoller’s 5 dogs is Denver
at 9 years of age.
Besides competing, John enjoys
hunting with his dogs. They hunt
pheasants, ducks, and geese at
Bong and Horicon.
Sue Freeman moved to Wisconsin
from Minnesota and joined BGRC
in 1981.She currently serves as
obedience director. Over the
years, Sue has served on the
board in field director, obedience
director, and hunt test chair
positions. Sue also served as a

hunt test judge for almost 10
years!
Sue breeds field Goldens at
Heatherwood Kennels. Her first
Golden, received as a Christmas
gift in 1971, was named Heather
and is the basis for her kennel
name. Sue has been breeding field
Goldens since 1981 and takes a
great deal of pleasure in hearing
from owners who hunt with her
dogs, compete in field, or simply
enjoy their companionship. Over
the years, Heatherwood’s Chips of
Gold JH CD WCX “Chips” has
sired many wonderful puppies and
has been an outstanding stud dog.
Sue currently has 11 dogs on 11
acres in Waterford. Her oldest dog,
now 12, is Ginger. Ginger is the
daughter of Heathwood’s Autumn
Star CDX JH WCX. Star died
earlier this month at 15 ½ years of
age and is remembered elsewhere
in this issue.
Sue’s dogs are her passion. They
are her family. They are her
children. She never tires of
watching puppies develop and
take on their distinctive
personalities. For her, watching
this development is one of the
most wonderful and thrilling
experiences in the world and, at
this stage in her life, Sue enjoys
having the time to focus on her
dogs and spend time with them.
following her own advice that a
working dog is a happy dog, Sue
turned to obedience with Sadie
and together they earned a utility
title! This was a major
achievement for Sue and Sadie
and stands out as a thrilling
moment in her relationships with
dogs. Sue is not one to forget that
Goldens also have their goofy side
and shared the following dinner
story. Heather, her first Golden,
was 3 or 4 years old at the time.
Sue had friends over for a
spaghetti dinner. While Sue and
her guests finished drinks nearby,
Heather got an early start on
dinner. Heather, up on her hind
legs, was slurping up the spaghetti
noodles on the dining table,
thoroughly enjoying the dinner set
out for the guests. Goldens always
like to try new things!
John Brandt has been a member
of BGRC for about 5 years and
currently serves on the board as
your at large membership director.
He joined to learn more about
Goldens and to educate the public.
Over the years, John has helped
the club by serving as an
obedience ring steward at our
specialties and helping with the
August hunt tests.
Sue encourages newcomers to the
fancy to recognize that Goldens
love to work with their owners.
They are people dogs and are
happiest when they are doing
something – “you can see it in their
eyes,” says Sue. “Goldens love to
do what they were born and bred
to do.”
John has been handling Goldens
for 10 years and currently trains
and competes in obedience with
Naomi (Xanthos Pride and Joy).
They recently earned their CD and
are now training for open
competition at Trim Time in
Glendale. One of his proudest dog
moments was earning the CD title

with Naomi – getting the 1 leg

with a 1 place finish comes in as
a close second. John’s advice to
newcomers to obedience training:
Don’t be afraid to ask questions.
While hunt tests are Sue’s favorite
activity, and she has put a lot of
WCX’s on dogs over the years, her
proudest moment comes from the
obedience ring. Sadie was a field
dog who didn’t like birds so,
John recently picked up a book titled
Pet Loss by Herbert A. Nieburg and
Arlene Fischer. He’s just through
chapter 1 but recommends it to
anyone interest in this touching
topic.

Our September 27 general
meeting program will feature David
Tucker from Pets Helping People
(PHP). Founded in 1998, Pets
Helping People trains dogs and
their owners who want to give back
to the community and strengthen
the human-animal bond through
animal assisted (pet) therapy.
Their mission is “To improve the
quality of life for individuals with
special needs by conducting
Volunteer Pet Facilitated Therapy
(VPFT); to achieve optimum
standards of excellence in its
practice and in the care of therapy
animals through ongoing training
and evaluation; to promote the
supportive benefits of the human
animal bond; and, to enhance our
community’s awareness of and
involvement in Volunteer Pet
Facilitated Therapy Programs.”
PHP has provided dog and handler
teams for the Brookfield Public
Library’s wildly popular Read to
Rover program.
Be sure to put September 27 on
your calendar and see what a
Golden handler/dog team can do!
It’s sure to be an interesting and
engaging evening.

Golden Retriever Club to host the
2008 National Specialty on
September 19, 2008, through
September 27, 2008, in the
Warwick, Rhode Island, area.

making a sound buying decision.
New Sportsmen's Code From The
AKC
The sport of purebred dog
competitive events dates prior to
1884, the year of AKC's birth.
Shared values of those involved in
the sport include principles of
sportsmanship. They are practiced
in all sectors of our sport:
conformation, performance and
companion. Many believe that
these principles of sportsmanship
are the prime reason why our sport
has thrived for over one hundred
years. With the belief that it is
useful to periodically articulate the
fundamentals of our sport, this
code is presented.
Sportsmen respect the history,
traditions and integrity of the
sport of purebred dogs.
Sportsmen commit themselves
to values of fair play, honesty,
courtesy, and vigorous
competition, as well as winning
and losing with grace.
Sportsmen refuse to
compromise their commitment
and obligation to the sport of
purebred dogs by injecting
personal advantage or
consideration into their
decisions or behavior.
The sportsman judge judges
only on the merits of the dogs
and considers no other factors.
The sportsman judge or
exhibitor accepts constructive
criticism.
The sportsman exhibitor
declines to enter or exhibit
under a judge where it might
reasonably appear that the
judge's placements could be
based on something other than
the merits of the dogs.
The sportsman exhibitor
refuses to compromise the
impartiality of a judge.
The sportsman respects the
AKC bylaws, rules, regulations
and policies governing the
sport of purebred dogs.
Sportsmen find that vigorous
competition and civility are not
inconsistent and are able to
appreciate the merit of their

competition and the effort of
competitors.
Sportsmen welcome,
encourage and support
newcomers to the sport.
Sportsmen will deal fairly with
all those who trade with them.
Sportsmen are willing to share

2008 GRCA Western Regional
Specialty
GRCA approved the Valle Del Sol
Golden Retriever to host the 2008
GRCA Western Regional Specialty
at the Westworld facility in
Scottsdale, AZ. on Thursday,
February 28, 2008, with the
WC/WCX to be held on Sunday,
February 24, 2008.

Ellen has been appointed to the
Breeder Education Subcommittee
of the GRCA Breed Education
Committee.
Changes in WC/WCX Test
Applications
The GRCA WC/WCX Committee
has recommended changes in the
procedures for applications to hold
WC/WCX tests. The following
changes were approved March 3,
2006:
1. There shall be a single
application form, replacing the
previous two application forms.
2. The WC/WCX Regional
Representatives shall keep a
paper trail of the required dates
concerning the WC/WCX
APRIL/MAY 2006
application and use the date
reminder.
3. A statement of Required
Paperwork and Deadlines will
be attached to the WC/WCX
package for use by test
secretaries.
4. The results reporting will be
changed so that test
secretaries send all evaluation
forms and properly marked
judges, signed catalogs to the
appropriate WC/WCX Regional
Representative. The Regional
Representative will forward the
necessary information to the
WC/WCX Recorder so
certificates can be issued.
House Fire Loss
A wonderful breeder family in St.
Louis has lost everything in a
house fire. Sharon Rosenkoetter
(Hillside Goldens) and her
husband, Carl, are both very
involved in tracking, breeding
quality dogs, showing, etc. They
are very active in their own club,
GRC of St. Louis. Their dogs were
all saved including a litter of pups
that have since gone to their new
homes.
Pat Smith posted a request for
donations of clothing and
household items for the family to
take with her to the St. Louis
Specialty in early April.

Maizie Magoffin Passing
Maizie Magoffin passed away
Wednesday, March 22, 2006, at
the age of 98. A longtime GRCA
member, Maizie was married to
John Magoffin, brother to Samuel
Magoffin who was instrumental in
establishing the Golden Retriever
breed in the United States. GRCA
will be making a donation to the
Foundation in her name and hopes
to have an article in the GRNews
about Maizie.
Midyear GRCA Board Meeting
A Midyear Board meeting was held
March 18-19 in Chicago. The
complete minutes will be published
in the News. Some of the items
were:
Treasurer's Report. GRCA's
financial situation shows great
improvement. The losses
incurred by the GRNews have
been significantly reduced,
income is up and the previous
downward trend has been
reversed.
Sales and PDI. Although we're
not totally satisfied with the
performance of PDI, we also

realize we can't return to the
"old" method of an allvolunteer sales force. This is
an issue that we're actively
working on.
Kennel Prefix Listing. The
yearly listing will now appear in
the May/June issue of the
GRNews. A draft Policies and
Procedures statement was
reviewed and is still being
worked on.
A new statement was added to
the Trophy Regulations: "The
intention of the National
Trophies is to honor dogs or
members that have had a
major impact on the breed and
their accomplishments have
stood the test of time.
Additions to the collection may
be considered on rare
occasions. It is not the
intention to have a trophy for
every class offered at the
National Specialty, nor for
every possible area of
competition. In the event the
GRCA Board of Directors
determine that a new trophy
proposal does not merit
National status, they may
recommend to the donors that
the proposal be for a Regional
or local club trophy."
We received six nominations
for the Gold Standard award
and selected one "winner" and
five honorable mentions.
These will be announced in the
May/June issue of the
GRNews.
The Board reimbursement
policy was reviewed. We are
looking to revise methods of
travel and methods of
overnight lodging.
Breed Education Committee.
The job description for this
committee, and its
subcommittees, was revised to
provide for more flexibility in
selecting members.

on the activities of the Golden
Retriever Foundation.

Legislative Liaison is far too
comprehensive at present for
any one person to do. It is
being rewritten to make it a

Health Foundation

Media Information
The AKC slide show on Golden
Retrievers is being converted to a
digital format. Copies will be sent
to the archives and to the various
education committees. The video
on Goldens developed by Rachel
Page Elliott (often referred to as
"Pagey's video") is being worked
on for DVD production and should
be available for sale by the end of
the year.
This award is designed to reward
well-rounded Juniors who have
varied interests within the Golden
Retriever breed. The deadline for
nominations is June 1. The
winning Junior receives a plaque
and $100 savings bond at the
National Specialty. The
requirements for the award are as
follows:
1. Juniors must be between 10
and 18 years of age.
2. The Junior, his/her parents, or
the person sponsoring them
for the award must be a
member in good standing of
the GRCA.
Juniors can be rewarded for any
dog-related activity with a Golden
Retriever, included, but not limited
to:
1. Any AKC event: conformation,
obedience, tracking, field work,
hunt tests
2. Any GRCA WC/WCX events
3. Academic endeavors such as
a term paper on the history of
the Golden Retriever or a
school assembly speech on
responsible dog ownership
4. Community Service: nursing
home visits, obedience
demonstrations, etc.
Application: The application
consists of a written account of the
Junior’s qualifications/
accomplishments from the
previous calendar year. Copies of
titles/certificates/grades/ letters of
appreciation are encouraged to
validate the application.

Mrs. Ruth Worrest Otis, 93, of High
Farms, New Hartford, breeder of
Golden Retrievers, passed away
on Sunday April 2, 2006. She was
an active volunteer for numerous
clubs and organizations in the
West Hartford community and
became one of the foremost
breeders of Golden Retrievers in
the country after establishing her
kennel, High Farms.

section (like the Berner folks do if
you had a chance to check out the
other side of the building). This
should relieve the 'sardine effect'
and hopefully bring our obedience
entries back to where they have
been in the past.

she does as show secretary. It's a
ton of work and she gave it an
