From The Director
NARRATOR: Emmy Award, Jake’s secretary,
came through Jake’s office door.
(sound effect: wood splintering, glass breaking)
JAKE: Emmy, Darling, how many times have I
told you? Open the door before you enter.
When I read this, I was hooked. I take delight in the same comedic conventions as Matthew Konkel. Puns, self-reference, and
play-on-words make me giggle with delight. The more I read
Jake Revolver, Freelance Secret Agent, the more I fell in love
with it. But it wasn't until the first rehearsal that the fun really
started.
This is the most talented, collaborative and professional ensemble
of actors I've ever had the privilege of directing. I watched them
bring life to their characters by creating distinct voices, physicalizations, and oodles of personal back stories. Together we played,
experimented, and sometimes failed during the process—but the
laughter never stopped for a minute.
I hope you have as much fun watching this as I've had creating it.
Thank you for your support of Jake Revolver, Freelance Secret
Agent!

Meet the Playwright
It was the year 2007. I was living in California—a poor, struggling writer desperate to achieve some semblance of a creative career. Then I wrote Jake Revolver, Freelance Secret Agent...and I was still a poor, struggling writer. But
now I was poor, struggling writer with a script! And oh how my universe
changed. The phone wouldn’t stop ringing. People would stop me in the street
just to shake my hand and sing me a song. The mayor gave me the key to the
city. They named streets after me. The Queen invited me over for dinner. I
was beloved by every man, woman and fish! And…um…actually none of that
is true.
Jake Revolver, Freelance Secret Agent was written by a man named Vern
Steinbergervitz. I didn’t know him. I met him on a bus one day and he gave
me the script for Jake Revolver. He was on his way to the Tibetan mountains
to live in solitude with a small sect of monks who dedicate their lives to meditating on corning ware. Jake Revolver was a conflicting entity in his life that
was otherwise committed to poverty and glass-ceramic rumination. So for
Vern’s sake, his legacy and his playwriting career that could have been, I hope
you enjoy the show. And if you can, take some time during the evening’s entertainment to contemplate the awesomeness of corning ware. Vern would
appreciate that.
Heartfelt regards,
Matthew Konkel, 2016

Angels Program
For over 30 years, the Village Playhouse has provided numerous
opportunities and benefits to the community. We make high quality
theatre available without the prices associated with Milwaukee’s
city center. Additionally, the VPW provides opportunities for people of all experience levels to develop skills in various theatre crafts.
We also provide an outlet for artists of all disciplines to practice,
display and perfect their craft.
However, over the years, the costs of productions have increased
substantially. That is why we need to ask for your help. Your contribution will allow us to continue to provide the high-quality productions you have come to enjoy.
