Design Culture
This section compiles the thoughts, ideas and aspirations of various contemporary designers.
It can be expressed through various mediums like photography, print art, graphics, products,
fashion, space or audiovisual design. A good opportunity within this section to function as a
gallery to up and coming and talented creatives. Each individual possesses strong creative
beliefs and integrity in their approach towards commercial and non-commercial work. This is
an inspirational space for designers and it serves to stimulate the creative surge within the
international design community.

“Provocateur extraordinaire and savvy
with an ‘I don’t give a fuck’ attitude, 26year-old Frost epitomises a disillusioned

some sort of meaning in amongst the
chaos.” - Etcetera Magazine (2001)

Commonwealth
Stacks
www.commonwealthstacks.com
Michael Leon began Stacks in January
2000 after the realization that he had
drawers full of extra ideas, leftover from
his work as art director of the skate
clothing line Fourstar. Anxious (he always
is) to keep busy, he began producing
t-shirts and posters under the name
‘Commonwealth Stacks Conversation
Editions’ and sold them in hand
numbered editions of 100. He kept
an archive of the shirts at
commonwealthstacks.com and sold them
to a few shops in New York and Los
Angeles, but mostly he gave them away
to his friends.
Today, Stacks continues to evolve
and maintains a position outside of
expectations for a graphics based
studio. In addition to Stacks, Michael
continues to art direct Fourstar
(fourstarclothing.com), and designs
skateboard graphics for Girl Skateboards
(girlskateboards.com), as well as
collaborating with clients like Virgin
Records, 2K, and Tokion magazine.
He has exhibited his work in Europe
and Japan, as well as two recent U.S.
solo shows.

Most of my work is influenced by folk
art, mythology and graphic design. I use
various medias including cut paper, silk
screens, ink and water color.
To me the complete piece is as important
as the subject matter. I want the viewer
to notice the textures, colors and patterns
that make up the entire piece.
I operate a website called EngineSystem

work I do.

I was born in 1967. Graduated in 1991
from the Ensad school (Ecole Nationale
des Arts Décoratifs).
I worked as a graphic designer, illustrator
and art director in many different
domains: publishing, web design and
video to name a few. I started working
with the French record company
F Communications (Laurent Garnier,
St Germain, etc). This experience was
fantastic, I learned so many things and
I still think it's one of the best record
labels in France.
Then I worked for 4 years with the
directors Olivier Kuntzel and Florence
Deygas. We made promos for Dimitri

internet start-up boo.com to create their
online magazine, Boom Magazine. A few
months later, I moved to London to create
a new version of the commercial site.
While in London, I worked for the design
agency Me Company, developing some
web projects.
I moved back to Paris in 2001. I share
my time making videos (Brigitte

Estelle Saint Bris), websites (Grumly),
illustrations and graphic design.

Drawing and illustration are a large part
of Soo’s interests. Much of her artistic
work is inspired by people’s everyday
lives. Soo’s illustrations often reflect her
observation of people in relation to others.
They are abstract and dreamy, but
she also tries to make a point at the
same time.

Milkxhake, a new Hong Kong based

“Hug&Kiss” is our self-initiated project
dedicate to our home- Hong Kong. It is
our self-expression towards the place
we lived.
It was started from a design project“milkshake” when we were studying, feels
like tasting a cup of “milkshake”. Our
new name entitled “milkxhake”
provides not only a cup of drink, but also
symbolizes the spirit of “mix” through
our logo symbol.
Issue 1 has just been launched via our
web. We created a new identity for “HK”
and posed a new meaning to it “Hug &
Kiss”. We think it is time to talk less but
hug & kiss our place more than ever!
So, let’s taste our delicious works and
mix it a better world!

Vasava
www.vasava.es
Vasava is a communication studio started
in Barcelona in 1997. We are a team of
10 young people from various fields and
disciplines. We take on very diverse
projects for shared supports, trying to
break with the worn-out ideas of
conventional communication.
We have a new way of dealing with the
creative process based on experiment
and commitment, and the search for new
communication values, trends and fresh
ideas is what inspires us. We use a single
criterion and objective to take off in
different directions, working the same
idea in all its possibilities and formats,
capturing the most excitement we can
and generating inputs.
We do not limit our fields of action and
we approach totally projects- we do print,
interactive media, type design, exhibition
design and we have also created and
published the books Evophat, the starter
of Vasava Leisure Goods, a new chapter
in the studio, which is the challenge of
creation itself. Quality ideas for free time
and oriented at young people who share
Vasava’s creative line and angle.

BASE is a studio specializing in creative
direction and brand development.
Founded in Belgium in 1993, the
company now maintains a staff of

New York, and Barcelona. The range
of its projects remains broad,
often encompassing the worlds of
contemporary art, fashion, beauty, and
design, as well as the more traditional
corporate,institutional, cultural, and
political sectors.
The studio’s identity work is characterized
by a conceptual, rather than stylistic,
approach. As such, more and more
companies are calling on Base to develop
total concepts for their projects that range
from logos and identity systems to
image campaigns, marketing materials,
Websites, and motion and
environmental graphics.

Rizon
www.rizon.be
Rizon Parein started with graffiti in 1991
at the age of 15. After 8 years of travelling
with cans his interests went more to
minimalistic, clean, less colours kind of
stuff. So he bought himself a G3. In the
beginning Rizon didn’t had any interest
to develop his own style or personality.
It was a way of paying rent without doing
a 9 to 5 job. He was doing jobs for small
partypromoters, stripjoints, etc. This
changed 3 years ago when Rizon met
Tom Muller (Ximeralabs), who gave him
some url’s as Surfstation, Dform,
Designgraphik, it blew his mind! From
then on he discovered a true new love,
he discovered “graphic design”. One year
from now he joined Duolog
(Stoav/Ximeralabs/Bingo).
At the moment he is continuesly into
design mainly doing vector stuff, with a
growing love for AfterEffects and 3D
modelling. In September he’ll probably
start classes in architecture after
designing his kitchen he got hooked...

Flink
www.flink.be
www.flink.be/flinkpaper/
Flink is a creative/design studio based in
Antwerp, Belgium. Flink means ‘good’ or
‘be good’ in Dutch. We like the idea of
trying to do better each time. Waiting
for a good brief almost never happens.
It's up to us to find creative ways to
interpret what the client wants to say.
The Flink Paper is a good example of
how we think.
‘Time For A Revolution’ also implies a
time to change old mentalities. The
biggest cultural revolution we are going
to see is going to come about from a
move to a more intuitive, personal age.
Away from mass production, away from
overt consumerism.
Spreads from Flink Paper
The Flink Paper strongly endorses the
spirit of collaboration, which encourages
creative minds and contributors of varied
disciplines to exchange ideas and be part
of the bigger picture. Contributors include
The Guardian, KesselsKramer, The
Designers Republic, D&AD, Creative
Review and Shift Japan.

Yumiko Kayukawa hails from Hokkaido,
Japan and has already made a name for
herself early in her career for her candybright pop paintings of fashionable young
women, animals, and traditional Japanese
motifs. As a teenager she also fell in love
“with the energy and giddiness” of
American pop-culture through her
exposure to rock n’ roll, film, and fashion.
By the age of 16, she had debuted into
the art world with a comic-book
(Manga) feature.
Her work blends fashion illustration,
sharp iconic graphics, and meticulously
rendered flora and fauna to create images
that evoke a dreamy and enigmatically
erotic tone. The girls in Yumiko’s
paintings are mysterious and elusive,
using images of both innocence and
fetishes, in a sexy, subtle way, yet always
engaging the viewer with direct
eye contact.

Happy Days Are Back Again
Why be bounded by convention when
you can be free? Why be the same when
you can be different? Why follow when
you can lead? Pursuing these thoughts,
Kubik came to fruition in 2001 doing
print works and t-shirts. It's an anomalous
name, “Kubik" as I interpret as people
being square and simple. It is a pledge
to thinking out of the box.
Inspired by the individualistic ideals and
avant-garde, we seek not to shock nor
provoke, but simply to offer an alternative
to the mainstream, and to challenge
conventions ingrained in our collective
consciousness.
We are open to interesting collaboration
and ideas.

Graphical House
www.graphicalhouse.com
Our universe probably contains more
than one Graphical House, but we are
the only one on our street.
Our ‘House Style’ is very friendly, heavily
influenced by a sort of early morning
optimism and a keen desire to help
our clients.
Working together is a very graphical
experience, we produce identity, web,
print and exhibition work as well
as 2D and 3D digital animation.
The four walls that keep us together
have their foundations in Glasgow but
our work and clients like to get out
there into the world.
