It has always been an honour for the Mueller Marching Band to lead out the ANZAC Parade at Redcliffe. This year we have an even greater responsibility. We have been asked to march about half way through he parade, directly in front of the servicemen and women. To march in the ANZAC Parade is alone a privilege, however to lead the veterans is an even greater honour. Everyone is invited. Come along tomorrow morning and join with us in the march. Students and their families are all welcome to march. There are two major community events this term - Oliver! and The Fete. The students and all involved have been practicing for many hours. The MPAC stage is starting to take shape with the set being built. Don’t miss out on tickets by leaving it too late. Next week we will be starting to ask for volunteers to help. The Fete is always huge and can only occur through plenty of people lending a hand. We will need help on set-up, stalls and pack-up. SECONDARY NEWS YEAR 10 DESIGN, TECHNOLOGY AND AVIATION The year 10 Design, Technology and Aviation class are looking for 'steam-punk' style items with which they will be making wearable art. The DTA students are learning about programming micro controllers and will be incorporating these into small items that can be worn - examples of these are LEDs sewn into a bowtie or even a jacket. The students will also be learning about soldering and small item welding - these skills will be used to fashion their wearable items. For those who haven't heard of steam-punk, it is a fashion genre that has been around for some time and is a mixture of science fiction and Victorian era fashion and even a little bit of American Wild West. Picture Dr Who meets Jules Verne and throw in a bit of Robocop. Whilst not being into it myself, I recognise that it is a platform for creativity that suits what we do in DTA. Prepare to see some innovative designs emerging from the Year 10s. We are willing to take things apart. We are NOT after electronics as such but if there is a mechanism inside an electronic device, then we'll disassemble the item in order to access the gizmo. Clocks are great. Please drop the items into the front office or M6 if you are passing by. The following are desirable... We will be educating them on career choices and would appreciate some parent participation. If you hold an interesting or unusual job we would love to hear from you! The format will be a casual interview style on the lounge. There is no need to prepare a presentation, etc. You will be addressing the Year 11 cohort. WHAT ARE SCHOOL-BASED APPRENTICESHIPS AND TRAINEESHIPS School-based apprenticeships and traineeships are commonly called SATs. They allow secondary school students, in years 10, 11 and occasionally year 12, to work for a business as paid employees – all whilst studying for their QCE and or OP. Students completing their SAT gain a Nationally Recognised Certificate and points toward their QCE. When SATs become available they are usually filled very quickly. The most difficult part is finding an employer to take on a school based trainee/apprentice as it costs the employer time and money to train the student. The student spends one day each week with their employer during school time and usually more than one day during school holidays. They must complete a minimum 50 x 7½ hour days each year on the job, this does not include theory. They must make up time missed during exams, excursions, and any other mandatory school event, during school holidays. Students are paid a training wage by their employer for the time spent at work however they are not paid for theory time, sick days, or holidays. Although most students drop a subject when they take on a SAT it is not compulsory. Dropping a subject allows the student to catch up on lessons missed during their day with the employer. They may also work on the theory for their SAT in these periods which will show on their timetable as Voc. Ed. A SAT is not an easy option, it requires dedication and persistence however it can be a pathway for students into their chosen career. All SATS must be authorised by the school which can also cancel a SAT if the student is not keeping up with his/her school studies. SCHOOL MUSICAL - 8TH & 9TH MAY Hi, I’m Jack Bradford director of the upcoming production of Oliver at Mueller College’s MPAC Theatre May 8th and 9th. We are now less than 3 weeks from opening night. The rehearsals are in full swing with the sets in place and all the costumes and props coming together. I want to thank all the parents, teachers and the administration at Mueller College for all their hard work and energy invested in this production.
