Don’t get me wrong – as an executive director, I believe in accountability, setting performance and outcome goals, and measuring our results. In fact, we launched an exciting (well, exciting to me) project in 2014 to review and assess our campus information collection and measurement procedures, so we’re sure we have fair and accurate data to report and use to assess our progress and that of our clients and make future plans. But every parent out there knows that using an arbitrary start and end date to measure results can be misleading. And the slow work of helping children heal from unspeakable trauma, helping find supportive homes for vulnerable kids, and giving young families new skills that prevent abuse –that brings many daily triumphs that can’t be measured in numbers. So while I’m proud to report that ACS served 411 children across all our programs in 2014 – the highest number in our history – I also know the number in itself doesn’t really tell you much about what we accomplished. It doesn’t give you the thrill that we all felt the day we moved one of our young residents from our campus into her college dorm. It tells you nothing about the young troubled boy who came into our emergency shelter and found a safe place to begin talking about – and healing from – the horrific abuse he’d experienced. And it doesn’t tell you about the long-term life trajectories that are permanently improved because a struggling family gets the help they need to keep their kids safe at home. In August we became the lead partner in Project HOPES, a major city-wide child abuse prevention project funded by DFPS. This program reaches out to families across our community with children ages 0-5 – the ages most likely to experience abuse. Through our existing Strong Start program and our partner service providers Any Baby Can and SafePlace, we are reaching hundreds of vulnerable families in our community with essential services that aim to keep kids safe. We spent from our reserves this year to build the capacity of programs that serve families in the community, and I would do it again in a heartbeat. Because with your support, we were able to reach more children and families than ever, and to strengthen our community’s ability to reach those who need us most. We also strengthened the LIFT Alliance partnership we’ve formed with SafePlace, which enables us to provide a continuum of services to children and youth working to build lives free of violence and abuse. Your support makes all these successes – both those that can be measured in numbers, and those that can’t – possible. No matter how you look at it, together, we did great things for kids in 2014. Thank you. Gratefully, Kelly White Executive Director SNAPSHOT: Residential Life at ACS Little Things Mean a Lot to Help Kids Heal Meet Keith, Loria, Dan and Kathleen. They are an integral part of everyday life at ACS. 2 FOOD: More Than Just Sustenance Chef Daniel Ost understands that the kids he’s responsible for feeding every day have often times lived for years without access to sufficient high-quality, wholesome food. Many of the kids in our care have specific nutritional deficiencies as a result of abuse or neglect that are affecting their growth or their health. But Dan and cook Loria Barlow know there’s more to it than that. The kids they feed, day in and day out, have lived without the love and care that a home-cooked meal conveys. Food prepared with thought and care makes kids – makes everyone – feel valued and supported. It helps them heal. It nourishes them in ways that go beyond just nutrition. Relationships Make All the Difference Facilities Manager Keith Palmer fixes what gets broken. And since traumatized kids often act out in the only way they’ve learned – by smashing whatever they can get their hands on – he’s kept pretty busy. Kids who have lived in chaos can take a while to get used to the idea that someone is looking after them. Someone is changing the oil in the van, unclogging the sink, replacing the batteries in the smoke detector. Over time, all those little things, those tiny everyday moments, begin to add up. Kids begin to realize that they deserve to be cared for. Kathleen Von Buren is usually the first person a child meets when he or she arrives at ACS to live. “Miss Kathleen” sits at the front desk, and she has a voice that’s low and soothing. She’s welcoming and kind. The kids like to come sit with her at the front desk, just to be in her presence. She’ll put them to work, sorting mail or delivering packages. Sometimes they talk, sometimes they don’t. They know she’s got a secret drawer of snacks, but they would come visit her even if she didn’t. She makes them feel better about things. Kathleen, Keith, Dan and Loria know that it takes more than just counselors and case managers to help traumatized kids feel safe and supported. The tasks on their job descriptions don’t begin to communicate the essential work they do at ACS. 3 EMERGENCY SHELTER Emergency Shelter is available for children from birth to age 19 who have been removed from their homes due to abuse or neglect. Individual and group therapy, medical and dental care, and other services critical to healing and success are provided to every child who walks through our doors. Age 0-5 12% Shortest stay: 1 day Age 6-10 12% Longest stay: 181 days Average stay: 108 days Total number of days of care: 4,769 Total in care: 108 children Age 14-19 67% Age 11-13 9% I used to live there when I was a teen and they are caring people. And talking with staff was easy. Love love love this place u all made a huge difference in my life. One day I will be volunteering at ACS. – former resident of Emergency Shelter Pictured above: Program Managers Monica Martinez (l) and Jodie Whitehead (r) 4 TRANSITIONAL LIVING PROGRAM Teens and young adults need specific help to prepare themselves for successful adult life. At the ACS Transitional Living Program, young men and women work with their case managers to develop an individualized plan of action that leverages their strengths and interests. They learn the job and life skills they’ll need to excel. And they get help making sense of what happened in their pasts, through group and individual counseling. Shortest stay: 51 days Age 16-18 50% Age 19-22 50% Longest stay: 1,793 days Average stay: 355 days Residents who stayed the entire year: 7 Total number of days of care: 4,219 Total served: 24 My time at ACS helped me discover a new life for myself, and I’m proud and thrilled to be living that life today. Thank you. - former resident of TLP Pictured above: Aja Gair, Transitional Living Program Director, with a resident of the TLP. 5 RESPITE CARE Temporary respite care is available to help parents who are meeting the needs of children with emotional or developmental disabilities, or children in foster placements. I am so grateful for Respite. It’s a positive experience for both me and my son. It gives me time to re-energize, and he gets to interact with other kids while enjoying fun activities. – a foster mom of an ACS client Unique clients: 6 Number of placements: 9 Shortest stay: 1 day Longest stay: 9 days Average stay: 3 days Total number of days of care: 33 6 TEEN PARENT PROGRAM By the time a girl in foster care turns 19, she is more than twice as likely as her peers to become pregnant. Without a positive parenting model or knowledge of child development, parents with a history of foster care are in danger of repeating the patterns that affected their childhoods. The ACS Teen Parent Program helps support pregnant and parenting teens as they develop a plan for independence and learn the necessary parenting and life skills to succeed. I learned a lot here. I learned what swaddling was and why it’s so important and I learned what to expect from her as she grows. - former resident of TPP Shortest stay: 9 days 12 22 mothers and children 10 Longest stay: 533 days Average stay: 144 Residents who stayed for the entire year: 4 Total number of days of care: 4,651 7 STRONG START & PROJECT HOPES 8 What causes child abuse? How does it begin? Usually, the answer is a combination of things. Parental stress, substance abuse, a history of family abuse or domestic violence, and poverty are all strong predictors. And so through Strong Start and Project HOPES, we work with the people who are experiencing those risk factors, to instill healthy habits, promote effective discipline techniques, and teach age-appropriate expectations. We help connect them to basic services, and to each other. What we’re doing is helping to build community around at-risk families. Helping them know that they are not alone. And that prevents abuse – before it has a chance to begin. Families served: 148 Parents served: 181 Children served: 180 Total individuals served: 361 Total home visits: 526 I was finally able to take a leap of faith and remove my two daughters out of an extremely violent home. Their father had been dangerously violent towards me since I was pregnant with my oldest and unfortunately, she witnessed almost every incident. Sometimes she became very confused and aggressive, and other times she tried to protect me. A heartbreaking situation. I believe with all my heart that this program saved my sanity and my daughter’s future. It redirected the path my daughter’s life was heading towards. The saying that it takes a village to raise a child is true and you are my village. – Anna, mother of Jaden (age 3) Pictured above: Aaron Oeser, Strong Start Program Director 9 FOSTER & ADOPTION When we nurture safe, stable homes for children recovering from trauma, we create the best possible environment for them to grow up healthy and strong. Anyone interested in opening their home to a child in need can contact ACS. There’s no need to be married, wealthy or already have kids to become a foster parent! The staff and caseload are small to ensure a hands-on experience, and they work with many types of families to make healthy and nurturing homes for children. Total number of families: 6 Total number of children placed in regularly monitored & visited homes: 20 Pictured above: Sally Fussell, Foster & Adoption Program Director 10 CARE ACADEMY Sometimes, the littlest things are the most important. By providing affordable, fulltime childcare with built-in parent education and support, we provide significant help to: • Young mothers in our Teen Parent Program, especially after they’ve left our care and are living on their own; • Families at-risk of abuse and neglect who qualify for subsidized childcare; • Our staff members with young children; • Any family in the community who’s looking for a diverse learning environment and a caring, nurturing staff.
