My Love from the Star
O THER TV DRAMAS THAT FEATURE SUPERNATURAL POWER: IS SU E No.1 M ARCH 2014 Whasanian In the street, MTR, restaurant or even washroom, have you noticed that people are enthusiastically talking about My Love from the Star? Is your Facebook flooded with information about this extremely popular South Korean TV drama? Are you overwhelmed by a sense of terror or do you feel isolated when you realize you still haven’t watched it yet? If so, let's see what's so special about it. My Love from the Star My Love from the Star is another South Korean TV drama that has made a splash in Asia. It features an alien (Kim Soo-hyun) who landed on Earth four hundred years ago during the Joseon Dynasty. Due to the crash of his spaceship, he has been stranded on the planet for the four centuries since, throughout which he cannot help but take on a new identity every decade thanks to his never-aging appearance. At present, he works as Professor Do Min-joon and finds out that he might be able to return to his homeland in three months time. However, his life is changed when he meets a top actress Cheon Song-yi (Jun Ji-hyun)... Aside from the intricate plot comprising various genres such as science-fiction, suspense, conspiracy and love, aficionados are also impressed with Professor Do, who has created the syndrome of dependence on Professor. Here are some major characteristics about this atypical professor: Supernatural strengths: The vision of an eagle; the hearing of a wolf; extraordinary physical strength; transient movement; the power to stop time and predict the future. Desirable traits: Near-perfect appearance (tall and handsome); exceptionally rich and erudite; highly protective; loyal. Undesirable traits: Never-aging appearance; jaded; a cynical view of human beings. Whether you relish My Love from the Star or not, there is no doubt it has given a new definition to South Korean TV dramas and thus become a monument in popular culture. Fun Facts Animal sounds The Japanese cartoon character ‘Keroro’ gets his name from the translation of the sound a frog makes in Japanese: “kero kero, kero kero”. Try saying it out aloud. In English, we say “ribbit ribbit”; in Korean, it’s “gaykul gaykul!” Recently, a trend has emerged towards watching Korean TV dramas. Now, it seems that everyone is watching My Love from the Star. Although I am a boy, the main male character called Do Min-joon impressed me a lot. He is not only handsome, but also very caring; he tries his best to protect his love, Cheon Song-yi. In the drama, he always makes his loved one feel a sense of security. He also has a full sense of responsibility in all aspects of life. He can be our role model. The most special and attractive characteristic of Do Min-joon is his face which never turns old, thanks to time on his mother planet that goes more slowly than on Earth, even though he never admits it. Do Min-joon is my dream type of friend. But, it is impossible to find a boy like him, with a forever-young face, handsome and owning special abilities. He will just live on in the imagination for girls, forever. Michael Ng (3D) English Department Bee Fung (2A) Yan Chai Hospital Wong Wha San Secondary School “I can’t wait anymore! Finally, on the phone, Koreans usually say “yeoboseyo”. It’s easier to say hello in English, that’s for sure! Welcome 환영합니다 hwangyong-hamnida Goodbye 안녕 annyeong Sorry 미안합니다!
