We’re high school sweethearts; we started dating at 14 on a school trip to Europe, thanks to the help of our friends! Tell us about the engagement. After dating for almost ten years, Bruce proposed in The Roxburghe Hotel in Edinburgh, over a bottle of Champagne, after whisking me away for a romantic night together in September 2005. How did you find the experience of planning the wedding? I could not have organised the wedding without my Mum, sisters Rachel and Sarah, and bridesmaid, Jane. Bruce only had two main areas of concern – roast beef and yorkshire puddings for the wedding breakfast and enough alcohol to last a week in case we got snowed in at the castle! Kirsty & Bruce What made you choose your venue? We had previously attended a family wedding in a Scottish castle and loved the idea of spending a weekend together with our families. My younger sister was searching the internet when she found Drumtochty and immediately it felt like it would be the perfect venue. When we visited Drumtochty we were all overcome with emotion and excitement. We knew it would make our wedding day so memorable! REAL LIFE WEDDING Any colour scheme or theme for the day? Our colour scheme was mainly dictated by the chocolate brown bridesmaids dresses, which had an oatmeal sash, complementing Bruce’s modern black tartan kilt outfit. My Uncle Ian and his wife Mandy of Eden Flowers in Aberdeen then provided our bouquets of golden Singapore orchids and outstanding flower arrangements. Elaine Gardiner & James Campbell How did you feel walking down the aisle? It was very emotional for me, but once I saw Bruce waiting for me at the altar it made everything seem calm. My Dad’s reassurance and humour kept things lighthearted and happy. Friday 26 June 2009 Ceremony Mercuré Ardoe House Hotel, Aberdeen & Reception Photography Susan Renée Photographer www.susanrenee.co.uk T: 01779 838 937 James and Elaine were planning to get married abroad, but they got such a great reaction when they told their families the happy news, they decided they wanted as many loved ones as possible sharing their celebration! P eterhead couple James, 24, and Elaine, 22, met in a Christian youth café when he was 17 and she was just about to turn 16. “I wasn’t looking for a boyfriend,” Elaine says, “but I guess he soon changed my mind!” 24 Elaine & James They were in Edinburgh when James proposed, on a trip to the capital for Elaine’s birthday. “We had planned to start our Christmas shopping,” Elaine remembers. “And on our second day we visited the castle. As we were walking around I bent down to sort one of my Ugg boots and when I stood up James was down on one knee with a ring box. It happened so quickly, I was so taken aback.” It was a surreal – and perfect – moment for Elaine when James opened the box to reveal a stunning platinum diamond ring. “Obviously I said yes right away. We spent the rest of the afternoon walking about Edinburgh in a daze.” James says his heart was pounding by the time he asked the question. “Even though I thought she’d say yes, I was very relieved when she did.” They decided not to tell anyone until they returned home as they wanted to break the news to their families face-to-face. “It was difficult to hide the excitement in my voice when I spoke to any of them,” Elaine smiles. The couple had always thought they would have a wedding abroad – very low-key with only immediate family and a few close friends. However, after seeing everyone’s reactions to their good news they realised how important it was to them to have all their family and friends sharing their big day. “We didn’t want a long engagement and knew it wouldn’t be possible to ask everyone to book flights and so forth,” Elaine says. So they soon decided on a wedding close to home. 90 Eden’s stunning wedding flowers are often found in some of Scotland’s premier venues which have in turn been featured in the wedding press including Real Life Weddings and the Scottish Wedding Directory. RLW WINTER 2009 AUTUMN/WINTER 2007 Eden’s florists are happy to visit the bride’s choice of venue to discuss ideas for ceremony and reception flowers. Our minister, Rev Michael Turner, organised the symbolic gesture of bringing together our families, with the lighting of candles by both our mothers. How did you enjoy having your photos taken? It was a very relaxing part of the day, as Neil and Mairi Fordyce whisked us away from all the guests so that we would focus on each other and allow our emotions to shine through. They made us feel comfortable and allowed us to really enjoy the experience. The photos are so natural and there’s a fabulous group photo of all our guests outside the castle. What was your first dance? Billy Joel’s ‘Just The Way You Are’. Did everything go to plan on the day? It went so smoothly, thanks to the help of our family, friends, Ewan and his staff at Drumtochty and our photographer. What were the highlights for you? The setting of Drumtochty, which was so special that it made me feel like a princess. And of course, having all our friends and family there to share in the most wonderful weekend of our life made everything just perfect. Drumtochty’s outdoor jacuzzi was also a highlight, where the groom and best man enjoyed late-night Champagne celebrations! What was your biggest challenge? Keeping the groom in a suitable condition on our casino night, which took place with all the guests at Drumtochty on the Friday before the wedding. Any advice for brides-to-be? Take time to enjoy the preparations, making them fun and relaxing for those involved. Most of all, relax, hold your head up, smile and take the time to enjoy the whole experience! 2 Forest Avenue Aberdeen AB15 4TG Tel: 01224 589051 flowers@edenflowers.biz www.edenflowers.biz Anything else you'd like to tell us? We are expecting our first child in November and would love to return to Drumtochty for the christening celebrations!
