Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
The Beatitudes praise the poor in spirit. One characteristic of those who are
poor in spirit is their ability to ask for help; they know when others can
provide what they lack. Today's readings encourage us to practice poverty in
spirit by asking God for what we need. What could be more natural than to
ask God for good things? God is, after all, the inventor of goodness and the
giver of all good things.
Asking God for help puts us in conversation with God. These conversations
take many forms. The reading from Genesis shows Abraham bantering with
God like a skilled negotiator, while Saint Paul's letter to the Colossians praises
God for answering us even when we don't deserve it. In Saint Luke's Gospel,
Jesus not only gives us words to use in our conversations with God (the Our
Father), but also promises that God always listens to our prayers.

UNLESS WE
BECOME LIKE
CHILDREN
Elsewhere in Luke's Gospel Jesus tells us we must
become like children to enter the kingdom of God.
Today's Gospel gives us a practical example of how
to become childlike: ask questions, and expect
answers. We need to ask as many questions as the
neediest, most inquisitive children we know.
Moreover, like babies, we need to expect to be cared
for. Jesus models this for us, going so far as to let us
call God our own Father. The Our Father prayer that
Jesus teaches us asks God for many things: a divine
plan for our world, daily sustenance, forgiveness,
help, and protection. Jesus invites us to ask for these
things over and over again. He promises that God
will always listen and honor our prayers.
Of course, sometimes babies and children ask for
things that aren't in their best interest, like a third
candy bar or a real sword. Like children, we can
expect to feel disappointed from time to time when it
seems that God has refused to answer our prayers. In
those moments, we can remember, like Abraham,
that we are but "dust and ashes." We can be
confident that the "judge of all the world" will act
with justice for the good of humanity.

Quovadis…
My Dear Parishioners: Today we celebrate the
Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time. If we
all persisted in praying for the gift of the
indwelling Spirit, were faithful in sharing the
abundance of God’s life and gifts that the
Spirit brings, and held as primary our
relationship with God, then our prayer for our
needs would probably be different. There is
nothing wrong with prayer for specific needs;
after all, we do it every Mass at the general
intercessions, not to mention our own prayers
of petition. This gospel challenges us to go
beyond specific needs and get the larger
picture; a focus on the gift of the indwelling
Spirit is already God’s answer to all our
prayers. What inspires confidence in us is not
whether God gives us what we ask for in
prayer; our confidence comes from the Spirit
who dwells within and establishes a most
intimate relationship between God and
us-shared life.
Our parish staff and volunteers continue to
work on various projects. We are nearing
completion of our facilities wide wifi
expansion which now enables us to monitor
most of the 38 thermostats throughout the
buildings. Soon we will expand this to other
monitoring devices for more compliant safety
and security programs. We are inventorying
our patrimony used for the celebration of the
Sacred Liturgy so that a protocol will be
available to assist staff, volunteers and
liturgical ministers in preparing the Sacred
Liturgy. Some work will begin in the parish
hall to prevent future flooding coming from a
floor drain. The parish hall has flooded
several times this summer and has flooded
several times in the past year because of the
floor drains. Volunteers continue to help us
organize important parish records so that we
can begin the process of scanning
ecclesiastical and civil documents kept in
perpetuity.
Meetings for Faith In Our Future co-hort have
resumed following the recommendations of
the Diocesan Planning Commission. We will
continue to meet throughout the summer in
order to submit additional proposals for how
we will continue to provide for the needs of
the Catholic Community in our part of
Monmouth County. This is an opportunity
for all to be involved in prayerfully discerning
how we will continue to respond to God’s call
for us to build the church in our time.
Continue to pray for this process and all those
involved.
Our Parish Super 50/50 is underway. Thank
you for your openness to this new process as
we strive to be in greater compliance with civil
regulations governing raffles and other games
of chance. Your participation is critical to
making our parish Super 50/50 Raffle a
success. Thank you for taking time to learn
about this process.
Registrations continue to be received for our
Fall Religious Education prog ram
opportunities. Re-Registration concludes at
the end of August. Please register your child/
children this week in order to secure a place
and so that we can provide all of the necessary
materials. Thank you for your cooperation in
this matter. The summer basketball evenings
are a wonderful opportunity for our young
people to meet one another and have some
fun here on our parish church campus. Have a
great week. Let us remember one another in
prayer. Peace. Fr. Jeff

Spiritual Adoption
Post Abortion Healing
“I have sworn that I will not be angry with you and will not rebuke you. For the
mountains may depart and the hills be removed, but my steadfast love shall not
be removed, says the Lord, who has compassion on you.” (Isaiah 544:9-10)
Many who choose abortion feel that they really have no other option. They
may be pressured to abort by the baby’s biological father, by their own parents,
doctors or others. They may lack financial support or a place to live. They
may be overwhelmed by the commitment to care for a helpless human being.
They may believe they cannot afford to add to their family. They may have
other reasons that they felt abortion was the answer.
Hopefully our “Spiritual Adoption Program” (see Monitor Article-June 30, p.20) will help those women who are
currently thinking of abortion to realize that there are many resources like Good Counsel Homes, whose doors are
always open for any pregnant women in crisis. Their 24/7 Helpline is 1-800-723-8331.
For those who have chosen an abortion and regret that choice, there are programs to bring peace, healing and renewal
into their/your lives.
