With greater challenges faced by our local nonprofit organizations, the board and staff spent the year seeking out ways to increase our support in the current year and during future recessions; and we focused on how to use our available resources in the most impactful way. Thanks to the Foundation’s carefully managed endowed assets and the continued generosity of local donors we were able to provide 331 competitive, agency and donor advised grants totaling $1,424,720 to nonprofit organizations and local charitable projects. In 2010 we received $3,916,092 in gifts and helped 17 new donors design just the right fund to meet their personal charitable goals. By year end our assets had reached an historic level of $42,000,000. And, we renamed the general endowment fund, to the more descriptive “Vision Fund”. We are grateful for the broad support of Foundation sponsored local strategic initiatives and were able to secure over half a million dollars in outside resources to support Ready for School and Destination Education. Two thousand ten (2010) was a year to take good care of business, to focus on what is important. Through the convergence of vision, leadership and resources we continue to help move the community forward. With growing resources to draw from we look forward to a very positive 2011. The Hall of Fame Award is presented each year to persons who have made a significant contribution to the quality of life for citizens of the greater Holland/Zeeland area and who exhibit compassion, integrity, courage, and a deep appreciation for the values of our community. Dick and Ethie Haworth were the very deserving recipients of the award this year. They have been supportive of many Dick and Ethie Haworth charitable organizations and causes with a with Trustee, Jack Marquis particular interest in youth programs. Ethie has developed her own children’s ministry of purchasing and distributing lovingly selected toys to young patients at DeVos Children’s Hospital and homeless children at the Holland Rescue Mission. With honors too numerous to count, Jim and Ginger Jurries’ commitment to their hometown has been well documented. Perhaps it is worthwhile, then, to explore the motivating factors behind their generosity in using The Community Foundation of the Holland/Zeeland Area that has, and will, mean so much to our community. Jim, a Grand Rapids native, and Ginger, a Chicagoan by birth, have fond memories of their early years in the community. Ginger began spending summers at the family cottage in Holland at the age of 5, and both are Hope College graduates. They began putting roots down in the Holland/ Zeeland community permanently in 1970 after living in Ann Arbor and Chicago. Eventually the family grew to include two children, Kristin and Steve, both of whom graduated from Holland Christian. Over the years, the Jurries have shown that sharing of their resources is a core principal. They have demonstrated to our community in profound ways what it means to be consistently generous with time and talents. Jim and Ginger point out that West Michigan is fortunate to have the support of many worthy non-profit agencies. They steadily give to those that fit with their family’s philanthropic philosophy. What they see in The Foundation is an organization with the capability and capacity of carrying on that philosophy…forever. What specifically about The Community Foundation makes it a fit for their philanthropy in the future? Following are some of the key points: Jim and Ginger Jurries x A steady board – The Foundation’s board consists of community representatives from virtually all walks of life providing a diverse perspective on the needs of the Holland/Zeeland area. By staggering board terms there is a level of consistency and periodic infusion of new thoughts. x Grants based on need – The Foundation awards grants based on thorough reviews by its grant-making committee. This process ensures that funds are being allocated to address the most critical needs of the day. It also means that as community conditions change, The Foundation can adjust its grant making accordingly. x Trusted decision making process – Change naturally occurs within community. Groups that are addressing particular issues today may undergo fundamental changes in mission, leadership, need, or may cease to exist at all. If those types of changes occur The Foundation’s board of trustees will continue to independently assess the means to have the greatest impact in the community and avoid misdirecting resources. x Financial stewardship – Management of The Foundation’s assets is tantamount to successful grant-making. The Foundation’s Investment Committee is assisted by an independent strategic consultant. This allows for a truly diverse and unbiased approach that holds each asset manager individually accountable. x Perpetuity insures appropriate decision making in future generations – The fundamental premise of community foundations is they will continue to serve their communities in appropriate ways many decades after gifts are made. They will be “for good forever”. As members of the Bridge Builders Society and through their Donor Advised Fund, Jim and Ginger are counting on The Foundation to carry on what they do today – make decisions based on need, community impact, and core values of the institutions receiving gifts. It is a process designed to help sustain, for generations to come, the community that has meant so much to their family, and many others. In doing so, The Foundation acts as their infinite philanthropic tool. 7 Char Amante Vera Arendsen Margaret Beukema Ruth Beukema Melvin Boonstra Howard and Mary Bouwens Julia Bouws Judson and Caddie Bradford Clara Mae Brown Charles and Penney Buhler Fred and Helen Bulford Mildred Campbell Rose Chevrolet Edwin Comstock Elaine K. Wagner set in motion a series of events that will forever change our world for the better. On August 28, 1998 he established the Wagner Catholic Scholarship Fund. It began with a vision and a gift of $10,000. Tom was privileged to see the first student, Matthew Krevda, receive the scholarship and offered this personal account of his motivation for establishing the scholarship “About four years ago, having completed my 80th birthday, my brain turned to contemplation as to what were the most satisfying and interesting phases of my personal life. Had they been in my high school days or in my four years at the University of Michigan, early married life, or when the children were babies, etc.? I quickly came to the conclusion that my years at the university were, of all the phases, the most satisfying and had motivated me most for the future… as it became necessary to assume responsibilities for making choices for my life. Looking back, I realize that I had been fortunate in many ways. When I entered the University of Michigan at age 18, during the depth of the depression (1933), little money was necessary to start my studies. For an entire school year, the university costs for full-time studies, as well as choice tickets for all sports events (including football) and many other services, were $90.00 – for a full year! In recent years, higher education costs have far exceeded almost every other element of the cost of living. It has become much more difficult for families to provide good college education to their worthy sons and daughters. This is especially true for students choosing a private college or university. Tom Wagner …I believe in colleges and universities whose emphasis is on the development of the whole person: intellectual, moral, physical, psychological and social. These are all keys to enjoying life and developing a life-vein of service and commitment to our community and to the world. I sincerely want others to have the opportunity that I enjoyed for a rewarding and satisfying future.” Tom added to the fund each year until his death in 2001, when an additional $1.4 million was gifted from his estate. Thanks to Tom Wagner’s generosity, as of December 2010, 53 students have now received a total of $431,250 in scholarship awards from the net income of the fund to help make the dream of a private Catholic education come true. These deserving students are now about the business of making this world a better place. Tom Wagner’s legacy will live on in lives of past scholarship recipients and in those who will benefit for generations to come. You see, despite the scholarships awarded to date and the economic turmoil experienced in the markets over the past 11 years, the Wagner Scholarship fund is worth more today than the total of Tom’s original gifts. That’s the power of endowment. Matthew Krevda (1st Wagner scholarship recipient) with Tom Wagner 18 Grants and Scholarship Guidelines The Community Foundation accepts proposals from organizations with a charitable 501(c) (3) classification under the Internal Revenue Code and who are located within or serve the greater Holland/ Zeeland area. It is the intent of the Distribution Committee and the Board of Directors of the Community Foundation of the Holland/Zeeland Area to allocate resources in the most equitable manner throughout the area served by this organization. Each year the amount of funding to be distributed is established based on income earned and donations made to the endowment funds entrusted to the organization. The Foundation will accept applications on the following dates: January 16, 2012, June 4, 2012 and September 17, 2012. We encourage you to call and talk with the Program Director or the Executive Director before you prepare and submit a proposal. Grant Guidelines for 2012 THE COMMUNITY FOUNDATION GIVES PRIORITY TO PROJECTS WHICH: t t t t t t t t Represent creative, innovative, sustainable efforts to address emerging or existing community needs; Will increase services, enable new programming or support current levels of critical services; Promote cooperation among agencies to prevent duplicating services and to promote more efficient delivery of services; Are of a collaborative nature (lead/fiduciary organizations applying on behalf of a collaborative may also opt to apply for an agency specific grant as well); Encourage proactive projects focused on prevention; Encourage additional and permanent funding or matching gifts from other sources; Yield substantial community benefits for the resources invested while serving a broad segment of the community; Address the following areas: arts and culture, community and economic development, environment, education, health, human services, housing, seniors and youth. THE COMMUNITY FOUNDATION GENERALLY DOES NOT FUND: o o o o o o o Requests in excess of $30,000; Annual fund-raising drives; Ongoing operating expenses of established programs; Services which are commonly recognized as government or school obligations (however the foundation does consider applications from schools for pilot projects and innovative programs); Endowments, loans, taxes or debt reduction; Conference speakers, fieldtrips, travel or tours, for individuals or groups; Religious programs that advocate specific religious doctrines or do not serve the broader community. The Community Foundation’s scholarship program enables donors to assist area students in pursuing their education beyond high school. Most Foundation scholarships are awarded to current years’ high school graduates and require applicants to live in the Foundation’s geographic service area. Some scholarships are company based and the review and award process varies accordingly. Scholarship Guidelines for 2012 THE SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION PROCESS The process begins in mid-January of each year when The Foundation posts scholarship criteria to our website. Interested applicants may apply to one, or several, scholarship funds for assistance. All applications should be turned into the counseling offices according to the deadlines established and must include all required documentation to be considered. SCHOLARSHIP AWARD DETERMINATION The counseling offices submit application recommendations to the foundation office for review and evaluation. Most scholarships are awarded in a competitive process based on criteria established by the donor. The criteria may specify the award be based on financial need, record of community service or academic achievement. Some scholarship funds are limited to specific educational institutions or particular fields of study. The Foundation’s Board of Trustees has final approval of all scholarship recommendations made by the schools or scholarship committees. Representatives from the Foundation present awards at Honors Convocations or Graduation ceremonies. SCHOLARSHIP AMOUNTS The majority of scholarship funds administered by The Foundation are endowed so that a portion of each fund’s earned income is available annually for scholarship awards. The amount available overall is directly proportionate to the balance in the fund and the fund agreement determines the individual award amount. 19 The Community Foundation is proud to partner with donors through the Scholarship Program to help young people in our community continue their education beyond high school. In 2010, the Foundation distributed more than $256,000 in scholarships to 150 recipients. Scholarship Recipient Amount College/University J. YAC members meet once a month during the school year for grantmaking, site visits to local organizations, and to learn about community needs and philanthropy. The YAC is enriched by the unique perspective and experiences that each member brings to the Committee’s work. The YAC program was established in 1991 through a challenge grant from the Michigan Community Foundation Youth Project (MCFYP) funded by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation. The mission of the YAC is to empower young people, involve them in the community and teach them about philanthropy while serving as stewards through granting. In addition to grant review meetings, YAC members kept busy in 2010 with site visits and service projects at the Outdoor Discovery Center and Children’s After-School Achievement (CASA). YAC members also benefited from a presentation from the Ottawa County Health Department on the results of the most recent Youth Assessment Survey. Data and trends from this multi-year survey were a great resource for YAC members in their grantmaking this year. YAC members had several opportunities to serve as a voice for youth in larger community conversations this year including the planning process for the Holland/ Zeeland area college access initiative called Destination Education and Future Search - 21st Century Governance. The Community Foundation is very proud of our YAC members and the enthusiasm, dedication, and thoughtful consideration they bring to their work as youth grantmakers. The funds vary greatly in terms of purpose, but all are centered on the principal of building an asset base that will provide key benefits to the community…shaping the path, if you will, for the benefit of future generations. Endowment Funds may be established with a gift of $10,000 or more. You select the name for the fund. All gifts are irrevocable. They are pooled and professionally managed in a diversified investment portfolio. The economies of scale serve to increase their charitable impact. Each year a specified portion of the income earned (and/or principal if deemed prudent) is used for grant awards that address emerging and evolving charitable causes in our community. The Board of Trustees is charged with making spending allocations and final grant approvals for all fund types. We offer free consultation for charitable planning that allows you to explore various giving opportunities without obligation – simply call us and we will be pleased to talk or meet with you to answer any questions you may have. Types of Funds Unrestricted Funds These funds are established without restrictions as to how they are to be used, allowing the greatest flexibility for our Board to assess all aspects of community well being and to direct grants to meet the community’s greatest and everchanging needs. Donor Advised Funds Donor Advised Funds may be endowed or non-endowed. They enable you to participate actively in grant making by suggesting to our Board of Trustees the charitable organizations you wish to receive grants. This fund option is an ideal way for families to participate in philanthropy together or for a corporation to achieve its charitable work without the burden and expense of administering an in-house charitable giving program. The Community Foundation’s professional grant making staff help identify worthy causes and is responsible for managing all the administrative details. Field of Interest Funds Establishing a Field of Interest Fund allows you to choose a personal interest area that will benefit annually from your gift such as housing, youth, education, health, human services or the environment. The Board of Trustees awards grants to community agencies and programs that most effectively achieve your charitable intent. Scholarship Funds Scholarship Funds are a wonderful way to honor loved ones, inspire young people or simply to offer the gift of education to area students. You help design the scholarship by selecting the eligibility requirements at the time the fund is established and the Foundation staff and Scholarship Committee takes care of all the administrative details surrounding the award. Designated Funds You designate a specific nonprofit at the time the fund is established and a portion of the income will be awarded annually to support the organization as long as it exists and continues to fulfill its charitable mission. Assets belong to the Community Foundation and the fund is managed by the staff of CFHZ. Agency Funds An Agency Fund is a simple and efficient partnership between a nonprofit organization and the Foundation. The long-term objectives of a nonprofit are supported with the financial stability offered by yearly revenue grants. The Community Foundation provides investment management and administration, allowing the organization to focus on its charitable mission. Community Project Funds Project Funds are non-endowed, charitable funds that provide an opportunity for The Foundation to offer service and leadership within the community. These funds vary in size, activity level, fee structure and longevity. Although gifts are charitable for federal tax purposes, contributions to these non-endowed funds do not qualify for the State of Michigan Tax Credit. 27 Follow the Path of Giving Through An endowed gift to The Community Foundation of the Holland/Zeeland Area (CFHZ) is a gift with enduring value. The Foundation offers a customized approach to giving, making it convenient and flexible for you to enrich the lives of others today, while creating a legacy of giving that continues to impact tomorrow. A gift to CFHZ can be as simple as writing a check or as sophisticated as designing an individual estate plan. It does not require great wealth. The Community Foundation appreciates every gesture of support, no matter the reason or amount. All charitable donations are eligible for the Federal Income Tax charitable deduction. Gifts to endowed funds may also be eligible for the State of Michigan Tax Credit (subject to the new Michigan budget rules adopted by the legislature.) OPTIONS FOR DONORS t Cash/Check/Credit Card – The simplest way to make a gift is to write a check payable to CFHZ or to use a credit card online at www.cfhz.org. t Appreciated Property – Gifts of securities, homes, land, personal property and other assets eliminates the capital gains tax liability you would incur had you chosen to sell your assets. t Bequests – Your gift can be for a specific sum or for a percentage of your estate. You can specify whether your bequest is for unrestricted use or earmarked for a specific purpose. t Memorials – Gifts made in memory of loved ones are ideal ways to remember family members, friends, or colleagues. t Life Insurance – By naming the Foundation as the irrevocable owner and beneficiary of a life insurance policy you can create a future fund for the benefit of others. t Individual Retirement Account (IRA) – By naming the Foundation as the plan’s beneficiary or partial beneficiary, you can ensure that your IRA or 401K assets will fully benefit your community and avoid potential income and estate taxes to your heirs. t Private Foundation Transfer – A transfer of all or some assets to the Community Foundation can offer private foundations tax advantages, flexibility and administrative savings while allowing you to retain its name and purpose. t Charitable Gift Annuities – A simple, guaranteed fixed income vehicle provides immediate tax savings in exchange for cash, securities or real estate. Payments are based upon age, size of gift and the number of beneficiaries. t Charitable Trusts – Planned giving with charitable trusts makes it possible for you to give a gift that benefits your community as well as you and your loved ones with a reliable source of income and substantial tax benefits. You should consult your personal advisors before making any major financial decisions. We are available at no obligation to help you design a plan for giving that accomplishes the goals you wish to achieve. Ways to Give Your Community Foundation 28 Managed Funds 29 The Foundation manages over 440 component funds each classified by type and purpose. Some Funds were established to support the general needs of the community, others to benefit a specific organization or community need. Distributions from all funds are made at the discretion of the Foundation’s Board of Trustees. However, a number of them involve donors in the grant recommendation process.
