CAMP MAKES A DIFFERENCE . . .
Five Reasons Children Need Camp
here’s no doubt that summer camp is fun. Kids get to sing silly
songs, play funny games, swim in our pools, take field trips and
have special events. This is the image of camp that has been captured and memorialized in films, books, and television programs for
the past 50 years. It’s the camp that’s been in Decatur for the last 25 years.
But there’s much more to camp than just a good time. Here are five reasons
your child needs camp.
Camp forever changes your child – for the better. American Camp Association (ACA) research has confirmed that camps build skills necessary to prepare campers to assume roles as successful adults. Campers said that camp helped them make new friends (96 percent), get to know
kids who are different from them (93 percent), feel good about themselves (92 percent), and try
things they were afraid to do at first (74 percent).
Camp teaches your child to “move it, move it.” Camp provides children the opportunity
to try new things and participate in human-powered activities. According to surveys by both the
Kaiser Family Foundation and the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, an American child
is six times more likely to play a video game on any given day than to ride a bike. An estimated 22
million of the world’s children under the age of five are already considered obese. According to research conducted by ACA, 63 percent of children who learn new activities at camp tend to continue
engaging in these activities after they return home. This leads to continued physical exercise that
lasts a lifetime.
Camp keeps all that hard work from going to waste. Camps understand the critical role
they play in helping young people learn and grow. We offer programs that help keep your child’s
mind active, bolster academic enrichment and socialization, provide opportunities for leadership
development, and ensure that campers achieve their full potential.
Camp allows kids to take a deep breath and feel the nature. Camp is a great way for
children to unplug from the iPod and plug into the world around them. According to a study by two
Cornell University environmental psychologists, being close to nature can help boost a child’s attention span. A study conducted by the University of Essex in England concluded that nature can
help people recover from pre-existing stresses or problems, has an immunizing effect that can protect from future stresses, and helps people to concentrate and think more clearly. In some instances,
camp may be the only time a child is in contact with the natural world. That’s why nature and environment are a vital part of Day Camp lesson plans.
Camp is fun. It’s true, kids do sing silly songs and play funny games at camp. Children are allowed
to play in a safe and nurturing environment, and are allowed to just be kids. Play is a powerful form
of learning that contributes mightily to the child’s healthy physical, emotional, social, and intellectual
development. According to an American Academy of Pediatrics report, creative free play protects a
child’s emotional development and reduces a child’s risk of stress, anxiety, and depression.

Families everywhere are experiencing new challenges
because of the economy. At Decatur Children and Youth
Services and Decatur Active Living, we see an increase
in requests for financial aid. Last summer we distributed
a record amount of financial assistance to families in order for children to participate in summer activities. Some
requests come from families that have never needed to
ask for help before. Many are longtime participants in our
programs. Some volunteer as coaches and team parents.
Others are already receiving financial aid and are requesting a further reduction in fees because they just can’t
make ends meet. These parents rely on after-school and
summer care so they can work.
The Decatur Youth Fund, part of the Decatur Education
Foundation, helps these members of our community,
thanks to the Decatur Wine Festival, the Decatur Holiday
Candlelight Tour of Homes, the Barbecue Blues and Bluegrass Festival, the sponsors of those events, and the many
citizens who make individual donations.

CHOOSING A CAMP/GENERAL CAMP INFO • Contact Marian Melton or Claire Miller, 404-378-1082
Choosing a Camp
Make the right choice in a summer camp for your child. Use this information to
make informed decisions. Please note the following camp formats and changes
from 2009 camps:
Traditional day camps are designed to
promote individual development through play,
field trips and relationships with peers and
counselors. They:
• Are offered six weeks of the summer (June
7-July 16).
• Are open 7:30 a.m.-5 p.m. with after care
available until 6 p.m.
• Organize campers into groups of 12 children, each group with a counselor.
• Offer a range of traditional camp activities including arts and crafts, group games,
nature/environmental activities, swimming,
snacks, and field trips.
• Organize each session around a theme,
but do not program exclusively around the
theme.
• Can be most beneficial when children attend for a succession of weeks, providing
the opportunity to build stronger relationships with counselors and peers.
• Include Glenlake Discovery (rising K-5th
grade; 5-11 years), McKoy Safari (rising K3rd grade; 5-8 years), Ebster Explorer (rising K-5th grade; 5-11 years), and DREAM
Camps (rising 6th-8th grade; 11-14 years).
Special-interest camps are designed to
explore in-depth a topic of interest in a camp
format. They:
• Meet for a half day or full day typically for
one week.
• Focus on a particular area of interest.
• Are offered throughout the summer for
children 4-17 years old.
• Provide before-camp care 8-9 a.m.
• Provide supervision noon-1 p.m. for an additional fee for campers attending two halfday camps at the same site.
• Provide after-camp care for an additional
fee for camps that end at 4 p.m. or later.
Kids playhouse camps are short programs
and morning camps designed for pre-school-6
years old.
Enrichment camps focus on a particular
area of interest throughout the session for
children 5-14 years old.
Sports camps focus on sports and physical
activity including tennis and swimming for
youth 6-17 years old.
Note: Kids Playhouse, Enrichment and
Sports camps will be canceled two weeks
before the start of camp if minimum registration is not met.
Traditional day camps serve children 5-14
at four Decatur locations. Glenlake Discovery
Camp and McKoy Safari Camp take place
fully outdoors. Other traditional day camps
spend a majority of the day outdoors as well.
after-camp care (Shenanigans) is
available after day camp, 5-6 p.m., for an
additional $15 per week and after Enrichment and Sports camps, 4-6 p.m., for an
additional $30 per Session. See table on
page 6.
Camp fees include supervision, instruction, supplies and equipment, field trips (if
applicable) and a camp T-shirt. No additional fees will be requested. Patrons who
4
do not live in the city of Decatur must pay an
additional $25 per week nonresident fee in addition to camp fees.
Transportation between special-interest
camps and day camps is NOT provided by the
City of Decatur.
Changes from last year
• Glenlake Discovery Camp will reopen in
the newly renovated park to offer summer
programming for rising K-5th graders.
• McKoy Safari Camp will serve K-3rd
graders at McKoy Park. For rising 4th-5th
graders Glenlake Discovery Camp offers a
larger pool and access to local trips.
