News: All the latest from the trade and industry Moto bought by Crash.net Off-road publication acquired by online motorsports company The off-road magazine Moto has been bought by the motorsport website Crash.net, which is part of the Crash Media Group. Crash.net claims to be the largest motorsport website in the world, publishing content on Formula One, MotoGP, superbikes, and now motocross too. Crash.net’s plans for Moto include the creation of an app for tablets and smartphones; a motocross channel on Crash.net; and more video content. Kymco reduces Downtown 300i Kymco has reduced the price of its Downtown 300i ABSequipped scooter to £3,999. The model is available on Personal Contract Purchase (PCP) via Black Horse finance. The Downtown is powered by a liquid-cooled, four-stroke, single-cylinder, fuel-injection engine, giving a claimed top speed of 90mph. E-mail: news@motorcycletrader.net Study indicates widespread lack of understanding of helmet ratings Road Safety GB has responded to a Department for Transport study on the Sharp safety rating scheme for motorcycle helmets. The safety group has expressed its concern that, though the initiative is important and useful to consumers, “there is need for more promotion, and to improve levels of knowledge and awareness of the scheme”. Forty per cent of the 573 motorcycle helmet consumers who participated in the study were not aware of the scheme. However, among those who were aware of it, almost 90 per cent said it was either a very or quite important factor in their purchasing decision. Some consumers held the view that it is not necessary to consider the Sharp rating when all helmets legally on sale in the UK meet minimum safety standards. Some consumers and helmet makers expressed the concern that it takes too long for a helmet to be awarded a Sharp rating. The report recommends: more work to improve understanding of Sharp; more promotion of Sharp to increase consumer awareness; and work with manufacturers to achieve faster testing. Hinkley recently graduated in engineering and is well known in the quad world as a former junior national champion. He will be first point of contact for dealer orders and sales support to the dealer network. He will also be responsible for developing internet marketing. Paddon, who has a customer service background in retail, joins the QZ/WK sales team and will provide sales support service to end users and dealers. Mike Hinkley, managing director of both Quadzilla Quads and WK Bikes, said: “On the back of ever increasing sales, we needed to invest in the sales and sales support departments. These two appointments show our continuing commitment to the dealer networks and to the retail customers.” Harry Hinkley (L) and Chris Paddon ONE IN A MILLION: A one-off, single-owner collection of motorcycles worth a reported £1m is due to go under the hammer at Bonhams. The collection— which includes a 1910 Pierce 688cc Four (estimate £60,000-80,000) and a 1930 Indian 1,265cc Model 402 Four-cylinder Combination (estimate £40,000-50,000) – is owned by the family of the late Santoni Group boss Tiberio Lonati. It consists of mostly American machines from Harley-Davidson, Indian, Pierce and Excelsior. The sale takes place on Saturday 17th October at the Stafford Show. Nora MX up for sale UK’s biggest quad racing club on the market The UK’s biggest quad racing club, Nora MX, is up for sale. The club’s chairman and owner Chris Murphy is stepping down in September, after the final round of the 2015 club championship. Murphy is keen for Nora MX to continue to promote and operate quad events for all ages and abilities and would now like to hear from parties interested in formally acquiring the club. The club has accrued many assets, including a timing truck, electronic timing system, transponders, drop metal start gates and twoway radios, which will be sold with the club. “My primary wish is that the club continues to promote and operate quality quad cross events, as it has been doing, and I will work hard to give the right people all the support they need to ensure that happens during any handover,” said Murphy. This poses the question: when will electric motorcycles become an established part of the mainstream bike market? The report also found that ULEV usage is not restricted to short-distance journeys, as per previous predictions. In fact, plug-ins are being driven for comparable mileages to petrol and diesel cars. Where an ULEV is used as the main car in the household, the average annual mileage is approximately 8,850 miles. Transport minister Andrew Jones said: “As this report shows, plug-in vehicles are cheap to run, can be used every day and owner satisfaction is incredibly high. The findings come from research commissioned by the IAM, which asked 500 drivers how they use their smartphones and tablets in the car. Results show that nine per cent Nearly one-in-five young drivers admit to taking selfies of drivers admitted to taking a selfie while driving ‘in the last month’. This increases to 15 per cent of young drivers aged 18-24 and 19 per cent of 25-35-year-olds. Women appear less selfie-obsessed than men, with just five per cent of women claiming to have taken a selfie while driving, compared to 12 per cent of men. Eight per cent of drivers admitted to driving while using a video-calling application such as FaceTime and AJS takes emergency action on ‘cheap imitations’ Small-cc brand importer forced to slash prices to maintain market share AJS Motorcycles has expressed alarm about cheap imitations of its Modena models being imported from the Far East. The classically-styled Modena scooter has been a best-selling product in the AJS stable for two years, steadily increasing in popularity. However, the future of the Modena may be under threat, as AJS managing director Nick Brown explains: “We and other reputable distributors of Far Eastern-built low-capacity machines are suffering as a result of cheap imitations being imported into the country and seemingly sold as loss leaders. “We feel that such actions are intended to damage the competition in order to gain a monopoly, which ultimately will only serve to destroy the market as a whole.” AJS reports that it has been forced to “realign” the retail price of the Modena 50cc to £1,079 and the 125cc to £1,099. IAM’s chief executive officer Sarah Sillars said: “Everyone knows how dangerous using a smartphone or tablet is while driving… Campaigns must be introduced that raise awareness of the prevalence of the issue in society and make this behaviour socially unacceptable as drink-driving.” Marshall joins Rieju New sales support man for UK importer of Spanish brand Rieju UK has announced that Drew Marshall, previously an employee of Quadzilla/WK Bikes, has joined Rieju as sales and support manager. Any bike licence holder will be entitled to a free one-hour taster session with an IAM-qualified instructor in one of 12 locations around England and Wales. The IAM asserts that the initiation is part of its ongoing goal “to improve the riding and driving standards of road users across the country and cut the numbers of those killed and seriously injured on our roads.” Anyone wanting to take advantage of the taster sessions, which usually cost £45, is advised to book before the end of September at: www.iam.org.uk/bikemoments. Average store prices fell by 3.0 per cent in July 2015 compared with July 2014. David Kern, chief economist at the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC), said: “After falling slightly in June, retail sales increased slightly by 0.1 per cent in July. However, at 4.2 per cent the annual growth in sales remains very strong and continues at a much faster pace than the economy as a whole. “This robust annual growth in retail reinforces our assessment that the UK economy remains too dependent on consumer spending. While a vibrant consumer sector is important to the economy’s well-being, it is clear that greater efforts need to be made to make our growth more balanced... British businesses still need a period of stability with low interest rates.” Businesses getting ‘raw deal’ on energy According to a recent report, 18 per cent of smaller businesses have been ‘locked-in’ to a fixed-term energy contract without their permission (and a further 16 per cent are unsure about their contract terms). More than 30 per cent of small businesses have been shunted on to a ‘deemed contract’, leaving them paying up to 80 per cent more. Meanwhile, more than half of small business do not understand their energy contract, and 1.3m businesses do not know how to terminate their energy contract, according to the survey SwitchMyBusiness.com. Mark Williams has been perusing the proposals Next Generation markswill.wordpress.com C Mark Williams is a veteran motorcycle journalist with a special interest in the future of British biking. ompulsory Basic Training (CBT) has been a fact of life for a hefty 25 years now, yet during that quarter-century there have been no significant changes to the system – despite its being a vital stepping stone to getting a motorcycle licence. Until now, that is. The Driver & Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) undertook a public consultation during March and April this year. The numbers involved were quite small: just 350 registered trainers, ‘key motoring stakeholders’ and other interested parties responded. However, distilled by the DVSA’s numbercrunchers, the subsequent recommendations are in the main useful and positive. The DVSA’s claimed goal was “improving the safety of young motorcycle riders by reviewing the compulsory basic training” by seeking views “to improve standards within the rider training industry and ensure learners receive training that is tailored to their individual learning needs and better prepares them for riding on public roads.” All worthy ambitions, if a bit vague, but the report then notes, “We are encouraged by the responses from trainers that many of them already recognise and deliver a clientcentred approach to training. Many trainers already discuss with trainees the extent of their theory knowledge and riding experience before starting. “These trainers have ensured the trainee knows what to expect during the course and that a CBT certificate will only be issued when they have demonstrated the appropriate competence, which might mean returning for further training.” Which translates to: “The changes to the standards check will identify those trainers who persist in a one-sizefits-all approach to training. We believe these trainers are more likely to issue the CBT certificate because a trainee has completed the required elements of the course rather than ensuring they have developed the knowledge, understanding and competency to ride unsupervised. Those trainers we suspect are failing to comply with regulations or delivering poor training will be targeted with visits.” Time is telling Also, perhaps crucially for the training industry: “Many respondents commented that a one-day course and two-hour road ride is not sufficient time to demonstrate competence but that to extend the two hours may be too much for novice riders to be expected to accomplish satisfactorily and safely on the same day.” There were many other subjects covered by the consultation, key ones concerning the assessment and training of the trainers themselves and Approved Training Bodies (ATBs), introducing “a training route to progressive licence access”, amending legislation to allow riding only automatic machines if CBT was undertaken on such a bike, and whether or not the “qualification process for trainers needs to be changed”, i.e. toughened up. Overall, the DVSA summarised its findings, with action points: “1. To develop training materials to help trainees ensure they can obtain the appropriate theoretical knowledge either before starting CBT; 2. We will improve our website content so that trainees can access better CBT information; 3. Introduce changes to the CBT standards checks to focus on core trainer competencies in teaching and learning strategies in line with the National Rider Trainer Standard; 4. Instigating riskbased, unannounced quality assurance visits. (Subject to pilot trial outcomes); 5. Changing to the CBT certificate to reflect training on an automatic machine, recommending that riders take further training if they want to ride a geared motorcycle; 6. Along with the training industry, to develop an earned recognition scheme to highlight those trainers who consistently deliver high quality training; 7. Exploring how post-test training can be better promoted and delivered; 8. In the longer term, to explore changing the instructor qualification process to facilitate a separate ‘downtraining’ qualification. This may provide an opportunity to consider other amendments to regulations, for instance a training route to progressive access and possible changes to the content and structure of the CBT syllabus.” The full report is available at: http://bit.ly/1hNRAcj. ■ 12 September 2015 P012_Next Gen_dB.indd 12 26/08/2015 21:36 Product spotlight: Bultaco Brinco BRING ON THE BRINCO Spanish brand Bultaco is back with a far-fromordinary comeback model. The new Brinco is a highspec electric mountain bike due to hit UK shores later this year L aunched to celebrate Spanish marque Bultaco’s return to the international motorcycle market, the new Bultaco Brinco is a pedalassisted electric mountain bike with a 2.6bhp motor incorporated into the back wheel, producing 44.2lbft of torque. It will get its first UK unveiling at this year’s International Dirt Bike Show, where it may well be something of a talking point. The limited-edition Brinco looks every bit the conventional, aggressively-styled mountain bike, yet it subtly incorporates the power elements of an electric motorcycle, and thus makes mountains significantly more conquerable than before. It uses an aluminium chassis with adjustable USD forks, a piggyback reservoir rear shock and disc brakes. The claimed range is 18.6 miles using solely battery power, or 50 miles if the rider helps out by pedalling. The recharge time is three hours. It weighs 39kg including the 9kg battery and will carry a suggested retail price of £3,595. Bultaco Motors plans to build 1,000 Brinco models in 2015. In September, the nonhomologated version Brinco R will enter production at the newly built factory in Montmeló, just a few hundred metres away from the famous Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya. The roadhomologated version Brinco S is scheduled to follow later in the year. R and S versions With the same specifications as the limited-edition, the off-road Moto-Bike Brinco R comes in two colours, a sporty red and black combination and an elegant blue and black, resembling the colours of the Bultaco models Frontera and Pursang. The nonhomologated Brinco R delivers a claimed 60Nm of torque, reaching 60kph (38mph) through the combined inputs of a 100 per cent electric engine plus pedalling. The homologated Brinco S will be offered as an electric bike, speed-limited to 15.5mph or as a moped with a top speed of 28mph. It will include a rear-view mirror, rear fender with licence-plate bracket, front headlight, rear reflector, side reflectors, rear passenger seat, side stand and horn. The price is yet to be announced but it’s planned to be available on the new government grant scheme for electric motorcycles, which will offer end users a 20 per cent subsidy. Bultaco products will be exclusively distributed in the UK by Lincolnshire-based Urban Moto. Trader investigates 18 September 2015 p018021_Recycle_dB.indd 18 26/08/2015 21:46 “Evotech is considering a briquette machine that would cost as much as £50k” B e it for ethical reasons or because it makes good financial sense, more and more companies within the motorcycle industry are taking to recycling. One such company fully embracing recycling is Evotech Performance. The precision engineering company, which specialises in aftermarket performance and aesthetics-enhancing products, has long pursued optimum manufacturing efficiency. Its directors regard the reuse of waste as a fundamental practice for both moral and cost reasons. Producing thousands of units a year, including everything from tail-tidies to specialist racing products for BSB, World Superbike and MotoGP teams, Lincolnshire-based Evotech recoups tens of thousands of pounds per year on waste aluminium swarf alone. What’s more, the firm is certain there’s potential to achieve an even greater return in the future. Operating a number of different recycling methods, co-director Dan Rack told Trader how the whole company has always had a strong inclination towards resourceful waste management. In the last few years in particular, Evotech has really upped its game in this field. “We see recycling as a core element in efficiency,” explained Rack. “We don’t get much pressure from outside parties to recycle, nor do we get much financial incentive. We do, however, understand the ethical reasons why we would want to recycle. We often come up with ideas to increase our efficiency and a natural bi-product of such thinking can overlap with green/ recycling opportunities, so it’s often a win-win situation.” Investing in efficiency As is the case for most greenthinking companies, Evotech’s unusually proactive approach to recycling has been honed over the years. At present, the company is considering the purchase of a specialist briquette machine which will cost between £20,000 and £50,000. “Some recycling can mean quite heavy investment, such as the potential outlay for the new briquette machine,” explained Rack. “The benefits of the machine, which will compact our aluminium swarf into solid bricks, would be numerous, with one of the key incentives being its ability to free up precious floor space in the factory. “Ten large bins of swarf would be reduced to just one. Another bonus is the reduced amount of time our staff will spend moving bins and halting production. A third incentive is the scrap value per tonne increases by 50 per cent, so there’s the chance to recoup even more money from the same volume of waste. “Lastly, it would also mean the recycling company would reduce its necessity to travel over and retrieve our waste bins as regularly, benefitting the environment with lesser carbon emissions as a direct result. We’re still undecided as to whether we will go ahead with the investment, but it’s a serious consideration of ours.” As well as metal recycling, the engineering firm also has practices in place to recycle large volumes of waste paper and waste liquids. “The cutting fluids will be sucked out from our milling machines and lathes, to be put through a cleaning process ahead of being recirculated into the equipment,” says Rack. “This means we can reuse the cutting fluids many times over and reduce both discharge into the environment and further financial outlay for us. On top of this, the hydraulic oil needed in our machines is collected during servicing intervals and sold on to a specialist recycling company.” Changes in legislation are forcing companies to think differently about waste September 2015 19 p018021_Recycle_dB.indd 19 26/08/2015 21:46 Feature: Waste recycling management, regardless of their size and speciality. Whether you’re a chemicals manufacturer or a bike dealership, more and more responsible practices are becoming obligatory, as highlighted by RobSpeed Motorcycle’s workshop manager Rob Wilkinson. “I remember the days when you’d put worn tyres out for the bin men to collect,” said the experienced bike trade man, who has worked in bike shops for more than three decades. “We service a lot of motorcycles each year and currently have around 120 used tyres to be disposed of. We are a responsible dealership and have found a professional waste disposal company which comes out to us and takes away our collated tyres as and when is needed. To do so costs around £1.25 a tyre, but that’s a price worth paying to avoid seeing people burning them or throwing them in hedges, as has been the case in the past.” Wilkinson recalled that recycling measures were tightened around 15 years ago, and that he took a positive outlook on such enforcements. He explained how these rules provide the opportunity to make a bit of money, for example, from selling waste oil. “We have a 2,000-litre waste oil tank on the premises and when it’s full we sell the contents to a company, getting a few quid back in the process. “It’s not a lot of money, but it’s better than nothing and it gets rid of the stuff maturely. Previously, we have looked into investing in a waste-oilpowered workshop heater. They’re super-clean and we’d be able to cut back on using our gas-powered heating system, which costs a fortune to run. “The only downside is the initial outlay for the oil burner, which is pretty extortionate. It’s an idea we’ve mulled over for a good few years now, but still haven’t bitten the bullet. Maybe we will one day.” Tyre makers are becoming more conscious of recycling concerns Events firm MSV recycles as many used tyres as possible (Un)burnt rubber Motor Sport Vision (MSV) has an impressive portfolio of UK race circuits under its umbrella, including Brands Hatch, Cadwell Park, Oulton Park, Snetterton and Bedford Autodrome. Each year thousands of motorcyclists flock to its venues for the many trackdays and race meetings it hosts. According to Brands Hatch’s circuit manager Mike Groves, waste disposal is a huge and expensive challenge for MSV. “We spend a significant sum of money on hazardous waste disposal each year. We do try to encourage our customers to ensure that “We have a 2,000-litre waste oil tank. When it’s full, we sell the contents – getting back a few quid in the process” waste is responsibly disposed of. “For example, we provide numerous waste oil containers in all our paddocks to allow users of the race circuit to dispose of unwanted oils and fluids. We are required to engage specialist contractors, at a not insignificant cost, to dispose of this for us, in accordance with all relevant 20 September 2015 p018021_Recycle_dB.indd 20 26/08/2015 21:46 Many of the components of a tyre are recyclable Recycling engine oil recoups some cash legislation.” Oil isn’t the only challenge for the circuits, though; perhaps the biggest task being dealing with the thousands of used tyres which get abandoned at the tracks. “The sheer volume of tyres used in motorsport means that we simply can’t allow used tyres to be deposited at the venue. Although some can be recycled and used for alternative purposes, for example, the construction of tyre walls around the perimeter of the race track, the vast majority are of no use to us. “We therefore request that all customers take their used tyres away with them. It’s inevitable that some are left at the venue, so again we are required to pay for the disposal of these tyres by Hydraulic oil should likewise be disposed of responsibly using specialist tyre disposal contractors,” said Groves. Continuing on with the tyre theme, a natter with Dunlop’s product support manager Mark Sears shone a light on recycling during the production process. One of the most interesting elements was to discover that, prior to the vulcanisation process, all of the components can be stripped back manually and recycled. Even the compound, which at this point will have been mixed to a specific formula, can be repurposed, and is often used along with many other rescued compounds to produce a generic composite. “Every day there’s surplus remnants left over from tyre build or packing,” explained Sears, “and someone’s specific role is to collate all these products and ensure they are stored, filed, recorded in the correct manner each day.” He acknowledged the importance of being proactive on the recycling front, from commercial and financial points of view, but also from a conscientious perspective. “Even when producing pure racing products, being environmentally friendly has still been at the forefront of our minds. In the past we’ve embarked on racing projects with vehicle manufacturers to produce low emission, low rolling resistance, low CO2 footprint tyres, for instance,” added Sears. As we have seen, more and more companies within the motorcycle industry are actively seeking methods that allow them to work cleaner, and it’s likely that as time goes by more and more businesses will follow suit. As highlighted earlier by Evotech Performance, there is often a cost to recycling waste, but there’s also much to be gained from the practice, in financial and ethical regards. Choosing whether or not to recycle is to a certain degree optional right now, but it’s probable that more rigorous legislation, building on rulings such as the 1998 decree that used tyres no longer be disposed of in landfill sites, will force many people’s hands. So acting now, or at least starting down the recycling path, could be a wise move. In this sense, the lubricants sector in plays a ‘babysitting’ role, looking after the thoroughbreds of the bike market. The UK is spoilt for choice with oil brands offering quality, service and after-sales N ow there is a number of new-to-the-UK brands available, each with a new impetus in terms of distribution setup, trade service and end-user marketing campaigns. With blending plants based in neighbouring European countries, the new-ish kids that have landed on our shores are German brand Liqui Moly, distributed by Rieju UK, French-based Ipone, distributed by On Two Wheels and Global Racing Oil (GRO) from Spain, distributed by ClementsMoto. While each of these brands boasts its own unique selling points and an extensive range of products to care for all aspects of both modern and classic motorcycles, on and off-road, they are of course taking on the ‘establishment’ giants of the British motorcycle lubricants world: the singularly focused, home-grown Rock Oil and Dutch manufacturer Putoline. Other brands may have come and gone, or at least faded away, but these big names have been at it year in, year out, through the good and the hard times; and both continued to support motorcycle sport, especially at grass-roots level. Trader went to Lincolnshire to trace the company’s progress and find out how dealers and the trade can share in its success F rom being a regional newspaper publisher to producing a portfolio of 24 enthusiast magazines, Mortons Media Group has gone through a seismic shift since the turn of the millennium. Of those 24 brands, 15 are concerned with two-wheelers, which makes Mortons the largest motorcycling publishing house in the UK. To appreciate the breadth of Mortons’ current operations, you have to look at how the company has developed to where it is today. In 1999, Mortons of Horncastle, a publisher and printer of regional newspapers, divided its operations between three new entities: Mortons Print, Mortons Media Group and Mortons Motorcycle Media. The latter demarcated the fact that it now owned a number of bike publications and had plans to acquire more. It was at this time that Mortons took the radical step of ending its involvement in local media publishing, selling its group of regional newspapers to Johnston Press and turning its focus to its latest endeavours. A period of growth and expansion followed as more and more titles were purchased or launched, and some of the UK’s biggest motorcycle events joined the fold too. In 2013, Mortons of Horncastle brought all of its operations under one single company – the current incarnation, Mortons Media Group. Mortons in the motorcycle market In the classic sector, Mortons publishes Classic Bike Guide, Classic Dirt Bike, Classic Motorcycle Mechanics, Classic Racer, Old Bike Mart, RealClassic, and the Classic MotorCycle. Veteran, vintage, classic, modern-classic, retro: this is where Mortons’ motorcycle history started. Naturally, this offers potential clients the opportunity to reach yet another branch of the two-wheel market. The future is digital? Is the future for magazines online only, as everyone seems to be saying lately? The case of Mortons appears to delineate a more complex picture that suggests the explosive growth of digital media doesn’t necessarily sound a deathknell for printed publications. From Mortons’ perspective, the internet provides more platforms on which to publish and widen readerships. Mortons has bucked recent trends and has demonstrated that having a wide range of titles gives the flexibility to maintain and boost reader engagement Apps and online content are becoming ever more important against a backdrop of general decline in the magazines market. The company claims it will remain loyal to its print roots while embracing the challenges of the digital age with new websites, apps, e-zines, e-newsletters and more. Of course, finding the right balance in which online complements print optimally remains an ongoing project, as it does for all publishers. Between now and Christmas, several Get On road shows are planned at various venues across the UK. The next will be at Uxbridge in west London on Saturday 5th September at the Uxbridge Driving and Motorcycle Test Centre. Using test centres is a first for Get On, but they are ideal spaces for running try-out events. Last month, Get On had a busy day in the West Midlands at the Wolverhampton Test Centre, where the team met an enthusiastic bunch of new converts. Those who attended had pre-booked, which worked well; everyone involved spoke about taking their riding further, and they will be tracked via the MCIA contact centre with regard to their training. This month, on 11th September, in addition to the Uxbridge event, there will be a full day of free rides in Hampshire at the Farnborough Test Centre. Again, those wanting to participate should pre-book through the Get On website. Get On will also be saying hello to motorsport fans at the British Touring Car Championships at Silverstone on 26-27th September, and then at Motorcycle Live. People will need tickets for both events, but obviously the ride is free. Motorcycle Live is a great introduction to the excitement and fun of motorcycling and an ideal place to take that first ride. Get On will be in residence at the show for the full nine days between 28th November and 6th December. Again, pre-booking is a motorcycle for free, as well as using their own websites to publicise the events. Did you know you can sell tickets for Motorcycle Live through your dealership, training school or motorcycle club on a saleor-return basis and get a 10 per cent discount? This is open to anyone who sells 15 tickets or more. You could organise a trip for customers or sell tickets through your dealership, either passing on the 10 per cent saving or making a small profit yourself. It’s another excuse to connect with customers and get them into the showroom. “Dealers may use news of these Get On events as an excuse to get in touch with existing customers, suggesting their friends try a free ride” recommended. Making it easy for people to try motorcycling is key to encouraging a new generation of riders. We know that this works. Of 4,655 riders who were surveyed after their Get On free ride, only 2.5 per cent said they did not enjoy it and, what's more, thousands have gone on to take a CBT and get licences since Get On began five years ago. Get On has evolved into a programme that is supported directly through MCIA funds. There is no cost to individual dealers or manufacturers, and it makes sense for everyone in the industry to support the brand and any free ride events. Connecting with customers Dealers may use news of these events to make contact with existing customers, asking whether they have friends who might like to try Training accreditation There is now a public-facing website for riders to find trainers who are Motorcycle Industry Accreditation Centre (MCIAC) accredited or working towards accreditation. Here, Hammond shares with Trader his diary from the trip: Sunday, 26th July Meet up with delegation at Stansted airport for 3pm and hand over our passports, which we won’t need until our arrival back to the UK. Delegation includes 31 companies with some famous names such as Rolls Royce, Airbus, Balfour Beatty, Lloyds of London, JCB, Aviva and lots of other big businesses. Joining us are seven MPs and cabinet ministers. The 74-seat Boeing 757 chartered from Titan Airways has a small area at the front for David Cameron, with a bed, board table and chairs. The rest of us have old-fashioned business-style seating. Behind DC’s area on the plane are his staff, security and colleagues. The business delegates are positioned behind them; behind us are 16 political correspondents from the national TV stations and newspapers. DC comes to say hello to his travelling companions and then we’re off. Monday, 27th July Sixteen-and-a-half hours later, including a refuelling stop in Muscat, we arrive in Jakarta, Indonesia to a full-on red carpet, military-style reception and 35°C heat. After some pomp and ceremony, we jump into What a load of two smart minibuses, ... businesspeople! behind the PM and his team, joining a huge cavalcade with lots of military, police cars and what seem like dozens of outriders, taking us to our hotel. Jakarta at rush hour is mad. After a quick Red-carpet freshen-up at the hotel, treatment, literally we head to an ASEAN Economic Community meeting, in a very grand room at the ASEAN Secretariat building. We’re obviously all very tired, but I only witness one person (the Airbus man) actually nod off during the meeting! Next, we go to a very formal state dinner Singapore sparkle with President Jokowi and all his dignitaries. Speeches from DC and Jokowi, with some traditional Indonesian dancing by three different dance troops. I sit with three of his nine presidential advisors. A very tired delegation is then whisked back off to the hotel and finally bed… after a couple of social drinks! The PM gets Oxford-educated for the second time in his life Tuesday, 28th July Within the hotel is a huge hoarding promoting ‘Business is Great (Britain & NI) / UK – Indonesia Business Forum’, which starts at 8am. We attend an initial welcome presentation and then head off into different meetings; mine was ‘Advanced Engineering’. In this meeting, we get to present our business to local Indonesian companies. I meet with a huge tyre-producing business that has recently built its own proving ground – like Mira in the UK. Next comes a debrief from each of the different meetings, run by Anna Soubry MP. David Cameron presents to the room and closes the meeting at 10am, leaving us around 45 minutes to network before jumping back into our cavalcade to race back to the airport. At 3.30pm we arrive in Singapore to another militarystyle reception and cavalcade, zooming us to a huge Lee Kuan Yee National University of Singapore reception for 4:30pm. Here we meet senior ministers from Singapore and various presentations are given, including one by David Cameron. I meet up with Kenji from Hodaka, our importer for Singapore. Wednesday, 29th July This day was always going to be the very long day, with two flights, an early start and a nonstop agenda. We are bundled into our minibusat7.30amforanearlystart and a drive to the Unilever Four Acres Campus, a mega-facility to look after the 20,000 Unilever employees in the Australasia region. This time we meet up with the ‘UK Northern Powerhouse’, another business delegation led by the Sajid Javid MP. They give a number of presentations, and it was impressive to learn that Sunderland builds more Nissans than Italy builds cars in total and that Yorkshire created more jobs last year than did France! The presentations are rounded off by a key note speech by the PM and a senior Singapore cabinet minister. At 11am we are given a presentation by Rolls Royce and then grab a ‘networking lunch’ beforewerushedofftotheairport. After a three-hour flight we arrive in Hanoi, Vietnam. Significantly, this is the first time any UK prime minister has ever visited Vietnam and you could see how special it was to the Vietnamese. After meeting various heads of state at Hanoi airport, the PM joins Rolls Royce and Vietnam Air where a £340m deal is nailed for a service and maintenance contract for the fleet of RR engines purchased/ ordered earlier this year. We break off into a couple of teams, with mine heading off to the Ministry of Transport to meet with the minister of transport and his whole team. While this has little direct relevance to Oxford Products we get to hear about their current infrastructure plans and how the UK could get involved. There is a basic agreement that the UK can grab various projects, one for a $16bn airport construction project that seems to be agreed in principle right before my eyes! After this meeting, we all join back up and head off to the state dinner. The UK Embassy had lots of negotiations to do here, as the Vietnam side wanted only politicians at the dinner initially and managed to get approval the week before to include all of the PM’s delegation. Our PM and theirs, Mr Nguyen Tan Dung, offer toasts and give speeches. It is my first experience of Nem Tay Ho, which translates as ‘spring rolls with snail’ – actually rather nice! We are rushed from the state dinner to the airport, where we take a two-hour flight from Hanoi to the more industrial area of Ho Chi Minh City, arriving at our hotel some time after midnight. Thursday, 30th July With Kenji Lim from OP’s Singapore importer With fellow delegates in Vietnam Picking up staff canteen decor ideas Another day, another Fortunately, we don’t posh dinner have an early start, with our first meeting at 9.30am, to meet with Saigon Industry Corporation, which is a state-owned entity. We get the opportunity to present our business to them and then hear about their many varied businesses. This The PM in full flow certainly wasn’t a selling opportunity for Oxford Products, but could be a very interesting company for our supply chain. At 11.45am, we head to the airport for a 1pm flight to Malaysia, arriving at 4pm in Kuala Lumpar. After the normal pomp and ceremony at the airport, we depart for downtown Kuala Lumpar and then break up into a couple of smaller groups. We go to the massively impressive developers MRCB and receive a presentation on some of their projects. One of the developments is some 220 acres. The chairman of Architects Benoy, part of our delegation, gives a short speech of thanks and comments about what we have seen. Next, we rush to a huge ‘Britain is Great’ reception with particular attention given to the huge investment made by Malaysia to regenerate the Battersea Power Station area of London. The location, under the famous Petronas towers, is amazing. Hundreds of people attend this reception, including Jimmy Choo. Our Malaysian importer is on the guest list but claims never to have got an invitation, which is a real shame. Ann from Rolls Royce introduces me to her KL colleague, who recommends we speak to his friend who imports and distributes motorcycles to the region. Our third and final state dinner is within walking distance of this reception, with Dato’ Sri Mohd Najib Tun Abdul Razak, prime minister of Malaysia. Coincidentally I am on the same table as the Head of Lloyds of London, John Nelson, for the third state dinner in a row. Despite being under a cloud of corruption allegations, PM Razak is in good form, although perhaps that’s because he’s sacked all his detractors! Both PMs give a short speech and toast, then decide to mingle. Then it’s straight to the airport and on to our flight home. The PM wanders down the plane thanking each of us for coming on the trip, posing for pictures, etc. Once he has gone back to the front, we have a couple of drinks to finish off what has been an amazing trip. ■ 36 September 2015 p035036_Oxford on tour_dB.indd 36 26/08/2015 21:57 Opinion: Sean Kerr Finding the right middleman When importing Chinese bikes or parts, it may be useful to appoint a trading company – but there are pitfalls to watch out for, as Sean Kerr explains T here are hundreds of motorcycle export companies in China, some of which are trading companies that buy in and resell motorcycle models to the importer. The other type of trading company in the Chinese bike industry is the motorcycle parts trader, a company that will source and buy from parts original equipment manufacturers (OEM) at a client's request. I’m going to assess the spectrum of trading companies and evaluate their efficiency, value and honesty. Some Chinese motorcycle unit trading companies may give you the false impression that they are an OEM factory; many have websites that are indistinguishable from a factory website – complete with pictures of their large facilities, storage, research and development and everything else that you would expect to find in the premises of a good motorcycle manufacturer. Many of these companies are listed as factories on Alibaba and Made in China, which can be very misleading. The only real way to test this is to threaten to visit the ‘factory’; that said, a brazen trader might take you to an OEM with which he has a relationship – so beware! Trading companies have certain advantages over OEMs, especially for smaller importers. A trading company is usually willing to mix a container with different models from different manufacturers, whereas OEMs will refuse to do this for the smaller customers, as it requires a lot of logistical and organisational work. Further, many OEMs refuse to collaborate with competitors. Traders tend to be willing to work harder, in a more flexible way, to satisfy their customers. The disadvantages of working with a trading company are that they do not have total control over quality issues. Complaints about quality cannot be resolved messages. I started to search for this company in order to troubleshoot the problem. Evidently, the trading company did not exist and had only opened to dupe some inexperienced souls out of their money by offering really cheap products and delivering the wrong models. The one area of the Chinese motorcycle industry where it’s almost impossible to avoid a trading company is the motorcycle parts industry. If you consider that it’s quite common for a parts importer to import a container containing dozens of different parts for several different motorcycle models, all of which are manufactured at separate OEMs, then you will understand the difficult logistics that go into such a project. Many of the parts OEMs either do not speak English or do not have an export licence; hence the need for a trader. Some bigger companies do not use a trading company but this is only because they have their own offices in China to deal with the sourcing and logistics. Usually, an import company needs a trading company to import a selection of parts. To conclude, if you’re a smaller importer needing mixed container-loads, trading companies will be very useful to you. Stitch-up job Many years ago, I was contacted by an inexperienced importer from the Dutch Antilles who wished to import a container of 250cc ATVs for resale. I gave the company the contact of a reputable ATV manufacturer. However, the importer later told me he had found a ‘cheaper company’. The result was a nightmare for the Caribbean firm, which received a shipment of low-spec 50cc kid’s quads. There are a number of points that are likely to be of great significance to small ownermanaged businesses. NIC Employment Allowance The £1,000 increase in the Employment Allowance from £2,000 to £3,000 from 6th April 2016 will be of interest to businesses with staff and to businesses operated as limited companies. It will mean for example that any business with up to four full-time employees on the new so-called National Living Wage (NLW) will have no Employer’s National Insurance Contributions (NICs) to pay. However, the introduction of the NLW itself (also from 6th April 2016) will increase the hourly pay of someone who is currently on the National Minimum Wage (NMW) by 70p (50p after allowing for the NMW increase in October 2015). However, from 6th April 2016, the Employment Allowance will not be available for limited companies whose only employee is a single director. That will impact on, for example, a shop owner who is the only employee of their own limited company. Unless anti-avoidance provisions are introduced, it may be possible to plan around this change by simply bringing an additional employee (spouse, partner, friend or family) onto the payroll. Dividends A main headline-stealer was the announcement that the first £5,000 of dividend income will be tax-free from 6th April 2016. This has potential implications for every individual who receives dividends – whether from a publically quoted company or a private company in which they hold all the shares and through which they conduct their professional activities. In very simple terms, it looks as if a director of a limited company who takes a significant part of their income from their company in the form of dividends will have an increased tax liability. It’s easy to see that if the directors of small trading companies find tax-planning routes for making the most of the £5,000 exemption (for example, by sharing dividend income from their company across other family members) there might be some swift counteraction in the form of anti-avoidance legislation. Annual Investment Allowance For any business (incorporated or unincorporated) anticipating a substantial level of capital expenditure (for example, major re-equipping of a shop or perhaps the purchase of a vehicle that manages to avoid being classed as a car for capital allowance purposes), the change to the Annual Investment Allowance (AIA) which occurs between 31st December 2015 and 1st January 2016 contains a trap for the unwary. If the business year crosses midnight on New Year’s Eve 2015, the expenditure limit for 100 per cent allowances for the part of the year from 1st January 2016 to the year end is not the headline figure of £200,000 but just £16,667 multiplied by the number of “A main headline-stealer was the announcement that the first £5k of dividend income is to become tax-free, from April next year” months in that period. So, for a business with a year end of 31st March 2016, the effective AIA limit for capital expenditure in the period from 1st January to 31st March 2016 is £50,000 but for a year end of 31st January 2016, it is just £16,667. If in any doubt about how this might impact on your business’s entitlement to capital allowances, consult your tax adviser. Small Companies During 2015/2016, the Office of Tax Simplification (OTS) will be undertaking a review of the taxation of small companies 40 September 2015 p040042_Bus Jour_dB.indd 40 26/08/2015 21:57 “focusing on the distortions between the personal and business tax systems” and looking at the complexities facing incorporated small businesses (businesses conducted in limited companies). The OTS will also be undertaking a review of the possible closer alignment of National Insurance Contributions and Income Tax. Travel and subsistence Of all the everyday matters of many businesses, the tax treatment of expenditure on travel and subsistence is one of the most confusing. No immediate change is proposed in the legislation but HMRC is consulting on proposals to deny tax relief on such expenditure where someone is engaged through an “employment intermediary”. The type of situation where that could possibly impact on small businesses might be where they operated their business through their own limited company and were engaged to work on an ongoing project on terms that meant they were effectively under the same degree of supervision, direction or control as an employee of the organisation which had engaged their company. Digital tax accounts Potentially one of the biggest changes on the tax horizon is not in relation to the calculation of tax but to the way in which taxpayers manage and pay their tax. HMRC’s project Making Tax Easier depends heavily on the harnessing of digital technology to make the reporting of income and the payment of tax as simple and straightforward as possible. The theory is that, by early 2016, five million small businesses and 10m individuals will have access to their own digital tax account with all small businesses and all individuals having one by 2020. The digital tax account should be able to pick up information that is already available to HMRC from existing sources and use it to prepopulate the account. So the days of frantically scrabbling through old bank statements in the run-up to the tax return filing deadline date of 31st January to find out whether the interest on a bank deposit account was actually £1.98 or £2.02 should become a thing of the past. A promised feature of the digital tax accounts is that they will enable small businesses to link their accounting software to their personalised tax account and have the option to pay as they go. Looking ahead How significant any of the matters touched on here might be for any individual business will depend on their individual circumstances – their age, how the business is currently structured, its level of profitability, the extent of its capital expenditure, whether they have any staff, the terms of working with their clients and so on. Adam Bernstein considers the best precautions and strategies for safeguarding the future of the family firm B usinesses don’t die of old age. They die because of accident, disease or deliberate actions. Most familyrun businesses are disposed of deliberately because the owners fancy a change or can’t find a family member to take over. But businesses can be protected from the effects of internal disease, provided they’re properly run. With careful management, a family business can be made healthy, robust and far more likely to live on for decades, if not centuries. According to PWC’s 2014 Family Business Survey, which analysed the responses of 2,400 family business managers in 40 countries, 32 per cent of family firms are looking to pass on ownership, but not management, to the next generation. Only 16 per cent of family firms have a discussed and documented succession plan in place. And 83 per cent of family businesses have at least one procedure in September 2015 41 p040042_Bus Jour_dB.indd 41 26/08/2015 21:57 Business Journal place to deal with conflict. The report reckons that families are now looking at how they can professionalise the family. Jason Piper, technical manager for Tax and Business Law at the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants, notes that not every micro-business wants to be the next Microsoft, and not every family business wants to carry on for centuries. “When the time is right, a sale or winding-up may be the best route for all concerned. But working out which option is best, and how to carry it through, will take a degree of communication and coordination that may not come easily to every family.” Family council The dynamics of managing a family business are always going to be different to a commercial venture between strangers. This is why Piper recommends that one of the key first steps is making sure that the family members aren’t strangers to each other’s goals and desires. “Setting up a ‘family council’ to deal with the business’s affairs, separately from the rest of family concerns, is a significant first step,” he says. Communications in a family business are often worse than in a non-family business. After all, there’s a background and context to every discussion and decision. Unfounded assumptions often abound, and non-commercial factors such as sibling rivalry or dislike of spouses can colour relationships and influence decisions, whether overtly or not. Says Piper: “If it is to achieve its aims, the family council will need the buy-in of all involved, and will need to be run appropriately. It’s an investment not just in the future of the business but of the family too, and should be treated with the respect that it deserves. Taking professional “You must make sure that family members in the firm aren’t strangers to each other’s goals” advice on how to structure the meetings, and engaging a professional facilitator to keep things running smoothly, will be a worthwhile, or even essential, expense.” Of course, bringing an outsider into the meetings may feel odd to some family members, but it will reinforce the importance of meetings, and help confirm the distinction between family and business. The facilitator isn’t there to make decisions, but simply to help the family come to the right conclusions. There are a number of practical points to bear in mind, adds Piper. “Meetings need to be held somewhere neutral, so that everyone feels able to contribute equally. Councils need to set up a proper agenda and timetable and stick to it. There should be a council chair (not necessarily the head of the family or business) who runs the meetings, and has the scope to keep the discussion moving.” Plan to succeed One further tip: to make sure that the council is a long-term success, start small and settle simple issues. That’ll give everyone a chance to see that the council can work, and the confidence to address bigger, long-term considerations. Though “failing to plan is planning to fail” may be a trite truism, it holds painfully true for a family business. It doesn’t really matter whether the aim is to maintain or to sell the business; stumbling into the future without the commitment of those involved is never going to drive the best outcomes. ■ Shareholder agreements While a family council can help with the maintenance of the business, thought needs to be given to what happens when things turn sour. For this reason, family firms also need to have a shareholder agreement in place to regulate the relationship between the company and its shareholders and the board. Paul Taylor, a partner at City law firm Fox Williams LLP, says agreements can be written to protect both minority shareholders and majority shareholders who play no active part in the business. What are the worst-case scenarios? What if the bank stops lending - which of the shareholders is on standby to provide any additional funding? The family falls out - how will the deadlock be broken? One of the employee shareholders falls ill and has to leave the company. Can he retain the shares? “These questions, and many more,” says Taylor, “should be posed.” He thinks that the negotiation of the shareholders’ agreement provides an excellent opportunity to make sure everybody is on the same wavelength before going into business together. The biggest battleground is the whole question of an employee shareholder retaining/selling their shares when they leave the business as an employee. An equally contentious issue is the price that the shares are sold for. According to Taylor, many who are tied up in shareholder disputes see no other option but to instigate litigation. “Shareholder disputes are fertile areas for mediation. Even if the parties can’t bear to be in the same room, a mediator can come in and identify middle ground.” Many scenarios feature some form of cooperation. However, if the circumstances surrounding the exit have been particularly traumatic, often the family members may be unwilling to negotiate. For the remaining shareholders, one possibility is to consider discontinuing or winding up the business; the remaining shareholders are not required to stay with the business, and the leaver cannot insist they stay. Shareholder disputes are littered with legal traps for the unwary, even more so for family businesses. The shareholders should take legal and tax advice as soon as possible. W WW DBS.indd 64 26/08/2015 22:12 Opinion: Mark Williams Showing some appreciation Rising new-bike prices and a squeezed used market could work in dealers’ favour, reckons Mark Williams, who’s noticed soaring values of certain niche classics E ven with new bikes sales steadily increasing month by month, dealers love to moan. And I can hardly blame them because, as far as new bikes are concerned, margins are getting squeezed. Meanwhile, the supply of good, re-sellable used bikes is diminishing. But hang on a minute: this state of affairs could very well play into the hands of any dealer, especially an independent, non-franchised one who’s looking to secure his or her financial future. Confused? Well, I shall explain… As my regular reader – hello, Mum, how are you? – will know, I’ve been paddling in the murky waters of the classic bike market of late, specifically early-Eighties Hondas which arguably aren’t really classics at all – yet. My perverse fascination with 40-plus-year-old Japanese metalware has obliged me to look more widely at the demand for bikes that are way beyond being just secondhand. As recently as the summer of 2012, you could buy a near-mint 1975 Kawasaki 500cc H1F for six grand; three years later, the same bike in apparently the same condition is tagged at £9,995. The same manufacturer’s Z1B from the same year would routinely fetch £9,500-10,000 back then; now they’re going for upwards of £15k, with one dealer currently asking – and probably getting – £19,995 for a minter. Break out your calculator and you’ll see those bikes have appreciated in value by 66 and 50–100 per cent respectively. Which is a load better than gambling on the FTSE 100, which in recent years has averaged five to six per cent. As for savings accounts, forget about them. as 2013, a matching numbers Triumph 3TA could have been yours for £3,500. Today, the same model in the same nick would be around £5,500. And a 1960 Velocette Venom was tagged at £7,500 in 2012: this year I’ve seen them advertised at £13-15k. Matching number examples of the once ubiquitous BSA A65 Lightning were fetching south of five grand in 2013, but now they’re priced well north of seven. Even a relatively modest Villiers-engined Greeves Anglian will cost upwards of £2,500 for a restoration project nowadays, whereas three years ago you could buy a runner in fair condition for £1,500. Further proof that lightweights are also on the up is the extraordinary appreciation of Triumph Cubs, never a very good bike in the first place as far I’m concerned, which could be had in original, running condition for around £1,0001,200 four years ago but now command well over £2,250 in average condition. Of course, what’s happening here is a reflection of what’s long been the case in the classic car world, and in both cases I’m sad to say that these old machines aren’t being bought to drive or ride. They’re being bought to squirrel away in secure storage and sell on when it’s time to put little Johnny through private school or for their owner’s pension pot. He was the founding editor of Bike magazine. Small outlay, big gain Certainly, with Japanese bikes it’s tricky to anticipate how far values will rise, but rise they surely will. Suzuki’s GT380A triple ‘stroker’, a bike beloved of many who owned them way back when, has barely appreciated from the £2,350 I saw one advertised at three summers ago, to the £2,750 a dealer is asking at the time of writing. Slightly younger fare is harder to judge, with mid-Eighties Honda CBX750Fs priced at £1,000-1,200 for original-spec examples, but I paid £750 for mine (in fair condition) four years ago; even so, that’s at least a 33 per cent uptick. If you’re really serious about capitalising on the ‘they-don’tmake-them-like-that-anymore’ market, then Brit bikes are the way to go. If you understand the often minuscule differences between individual models and model years, then the great names of the once-great British bike industry are where to put your money.
