KALISPELL MOOSE LODGE 2158 Highway 2 East - PO Box 5286 Kalispell, MT 59903-5286 (406) 752-4038 Volume #69 August 2010 Issue #68 Women of the Moose Celebrate Anniversary On June 26th, the Women of the Moose celebrated their anniversary. The men were more than happy to fix a dinner appropriate for the occasion. The guys spent all day in the kitchen preparing a meal consisting of baked ham, corn on the cob, and twice baked potatoes. This was served with a dinner salad. The lady officers were treated with a special course of sardines and crackers, courtesy of the Governor and the Junior Governor. As you may recall, the men were served beanie weenies for their anniversary because of a The Women of the Moose delighted with dinner side bet that has become mired in controversy. Well ladies, DATES TO all I can say that, “He who laughs last, laughs best!” REMEMBER August 7 & 8 Lodge Picnic McGregor Lake August 13 Steak & Shrimp August 27 B/A Dinner August 28 & 29 Legion in Missoula September 3 Steak & Shrimp Sept. 11 Murder Mystery September 17 B/A Dinner Sept. 30 thru Oct 2 State Convention (Continued on page 4) Fourth of July Was A Blast We had a good turn out for the 4th of July at the Lodge. Jeremy and Dale Heindel and Bill Lynch barbecued the hot dogs and hamburgers to perfection. Contributions of salads, beans and other side dishes were brought by several of the members and rounded out the meal. The ice cream bar provided a cool andtasty dessert with several flavors of ice cream and lots of toppings to choose from. A.J. Smith and Khristina Smith put together the delicious concoctions with the help of Joda and Kalvin Taylor and Tammy Noel. The kids had a great time participating in the relay races and games “officiated” by Joda and Kalvin with Rhonda Smith’s expertise help in kid activities. The adults had lots of fun watching. There was plenty of water involved which resulted in several soggy kids afterwards. The 4th of July went off with a big bang thanks to Vince, Terry, John, Chuck, and the Bigfork VFW. Between the five of them we had fireworks for the young and the old. Thanks to the ladies and members for doing a great job entertaining the younger people with games and snacks. We had hamburgers & hot dogs, and members donated potluck dishes. Thank you to everyone who worked and attended this event. Several different meals were offered in July. Please members, if we are to continue having these events, we need and would appreciate more members attending and supporting them. Wednesday burgers and beer are doing well. We also had a special Mexican breakfast put on by two Moose members from California. They put in a lot of time preparing this meal and did a great job. Thank you Dave McCleery and Danna Dempsey. We have had a couple of workdays doing cleaning and maintenance. There will be more days announced. We need more volunteers to help. We spent a lot of time cleaning the kitchen, please clean it up after using it! Don’t forget the picnic August 6-7. On Saturday, there will be barbecued ribs and deep fried turkey. We are asking members to please bring potluck dishes. The picnic meal will be held around 4:00 P.M. In August, we have two Friday night dinners. Please sign up, it helps if the cooks have some idea of how many meals are needed and cuts down on the waste. I would also like to mention Happy Hour snacks. It doesn’t matter if it’s crackers and cheese, smoked fish, soup, or sandwiches. They didn’t just happen to be there, someone put them there. Many times these items are donated by someone (bartenders, fisherman, people who smoke the fish, other meats, and many other items). Although these people will probably keep right on doing this, that’s the kind of people they are. Ask who did it, it sure wouldn’t hurt to thank them with a hand shake or a pat on the back, to show your appreciation. I know it gets to be annoying to be asked to buy tickets for this and that. But, if we don’t sell our tickets for the car, we are missing a great opportunity to add to our building fund. We also have three items donated by an anonymous person to be raffled with the proceeds to go to the building fund. Please show you appreciation to this person by purchasing tickets or buying spaces on the raffle board, Thank you, William Lynch, Governor MOOSE OF THE MONTH Dale Meier Dale was nominated for Moose of the Month for the continued support he has given the Lodge. Dale can usually be found hanging around with Tom Hall (the Bobsie twins) early in the afternoon. He may stay a bit later if someone else is buying! Dale, thanks for supporting the lodge, helping out with happy hour snacks, and giving us a hand during maintenance days. 2 CHAPTER #1710 OFFICERS SENIOR REGENT: Jo Smith 212-6151 JUNIOR GRADUATE REGENT: Callie Ewert 253-3918 JUNIOR REGENT: Isabelle Pound 257-5501 CHAPLAIN: Bess Lynch 752-0172 SECRETARY/TREASURER: RECORDER: Tammy Noel 752-2364 WOTM DINNERS Officer: Tammy Noel Chairman: Connie Larkey August 13th 6:00-7:30 Steak & Shrimp, Baked Potato, Salads & Toast $8.50 and $11.00 (10 & Under 1/2 Price) August 27th 6:00-7:30 Birthday/Anniversary Chicken Alfredo, Salads, and Desert $8.00 (10 & Under 1/2 Price) WOMEN OF THE MOOSE Summer has finally arrived and I hope everybody is out there enjoying the weather. Those that attended the 4th of July festivities at the lodge had a good time. The fireworks were great and so was the food. The kids really had a good time. Julie and Myron Beck had a good time at the convention in Tennessee. Julie gave a presentation of all they learned and some of the sightseeing they did. She also said the weather was extremely humid. Thanks Julie. Julie was also recognized at this meeting for receiving the International Co-Worker of the year for 2009 -2010. Terri Boyce gave a little talk on meeting our Sunshine Grandparents while she and her husband, Vince, were on vacation in Florida. She said they really appreciate the cards, letters and gifts they receive from us. Keep sending them. It is lodge picnic time again. It will be Friday, August 6th thru the 8th at McGregor Lake Lodge. The main picnic with be Saturday. Bring something to add to the dinner, the meat will be furnished by the Lodge. Those that will be driving home that night, please be careful driving. August is the Academy of Friendship month. The meeting is an open meeting and we hope all will attend including the men for the ceremony held August 3rd at 7:30 pm. I'd like to thank Debbie Wigner and her crew for the wonderful meals they prepared for the month of July. Debbie has a pretty heavy schedule but she still took time out to cook for us. Thanks again Debb i e . Please note: "Shrimp" being on the dinner menus from now on will be on a first come first serve basis until we run out. We are trying to keep our menu prices down and we are anticipating the price of shrimp to rise. See you at the picnic. Jo VOLUNTEER OF THE MONTH Myra Heindel Myra Heindel has been chosen volunteer of the month for August. Myra has been a member for five years. At this writing it will be due to start, in other words, I don’t have a clue! If you attended you know how it turned out. I will give more info in August. We, the members of Moose Bitterroot Legion, have a new Pilgrim, and his name is Larry Norberg AKA Leon Errol. When you see him, congratulate him. Congratulations Larry. If you as a Moose member, are not a Legionnaire, think about joining. Ask about it at your Lodge. In Kalispell, Whitefish and Missoula, which make up the Bitterroot Legion. It is fun. Don’t forget to pay your dues if they are due. Now, a few words of? PUNS #1 The horse got run over by a car. It’s in stable condition now. #2 No matter how much you push the envelope. Even the cake was in tiers. #6 She was only a whiskey maker. But he loved her still. Bye!!! Your Self Appointed Reporter Mike Houston Lodge Tidbits Monday Night Football Monday night football is just around the corner. The lodge would like to continue the tradition of putting on something for the gridiron junkies, so I got approval to set up a committee. If you would like to participate, there will be a meeting on August 4th at 6:30pm. Please bring any ideas you may have. - Mike Koskela 471-0141 tigan also made the trip to the Convention. All in all, it was a very in depth report and it sounds like everyone had fun. However, Julie didn’t mention what happens to Myron when the sun (or the booze) goes down. Pictures are worth a thousand words! Dr. Jekyl National Convention Several of our members attended the National Convention this year in Nashville. On July 20th, during a WOTM meeting, Julie Beck read her report of all the activities and a lot of what the guest speakers had to say. Our Sunshine grandparent, Norman Ver5 Mr. Hyde (Continued from page 1) Fourth of July O’Grady brought in her wares and painted all the cool faces sported by several of the little girls and boys. Fireworks furnished by the lodge and other donations by the members finished the evening. Pyrotechnics were handled by Kalvin, Jerry O’Grady and Mark Smith for the “big” boomers. A good time was had by all. - Phyllis Manus Lodge Letters & Notes The Boys Scouts and their leaders expressed their thanks to the Lodge and Chapter for giving them the opportunity to assist us as they have a number of times. They stated that even without the tips that are gathered and presented to them, they are more than happy to help out. The money that is collected and given to them all goes into the boy’s accounts to be used for uniforms, books and other necessities. We are very appreciative of their help so it’s a win- win situation. - Callie Ewert I owe a sincere apology to a very special lady in our Chapter. She contributes so much to both the LOOM and the Chapter in so many ways. She is a long time member who has sponsored numerous co-workers and heads up some special committees. This very special gal was presented an honor earlier this year and then I neglected to share this honor with everyone at the Women’s Anniversary dinner. Our lady was honored with the Coworker of the Year award for the State of Montana. This is not a regular occurrence. This oh so deserving co-worker is Julie Beck. She is so valuable to us and I am so sorry for not bringing this special award to everyone’s attention. I hope that Julie can forgive me. Her plaque is hanging in the meeting room for all to admire. Please congratulate Julie when you see her for her hard work and this deserving honor. - Callie Ewert Thank you to everyone who helped with the dinners in June. Jeremy Heindel and Lance Borstad for the great job on the steaks & shrimp. Myra & Dale Heindel and Phyllis Lynch for helping me in the kitchen. Thanks to Duane & Margaret Onstad, Carol & Eddie Klain, and Don & Jerry Bunker for the table settings and decorations. I also want to thank the crew who helped with the B/A dinner. Dale & Myra Heindel, Gary & Nadine Eckert, Bill Lynch, Jo Smith, Myron & Julie Beck, and Connie Langton. I especially want to thank my sister, Arlene Eckert, for doing such a great job cooking the chicken fried steak and for all the other help she gave me. We had a great turn-out for the dinners. If I forgot anyone, I am really sorry. - Linda Ward Thanks to all of the folks that pitched in and cleaned the kitchen. We know it took some effort, but it really looks good.
