Canadian Inkjet Catalog.
Since the last newsletter BNAPS has published Joel
Weiner's listing of inkjets. If you don't have one I'd
urge that you pick one up. If you collect inkjets it is
indispensible.
The introduction provides a brief but valuable history
and background to the introduction and use of inkjet
cancels.
16. Comments on issue 4. Patrick Awcock
It is always easy to pick apart a new listing of a new
area of collecting. But I want to end with the
observation that Joel Weiner has given us a
wonderful tool for organizing and keeping track of the
inkjets we have and he is to be commended for this.

The listing is organized by Machine Number and
within machine number a " general " chronological
order. This "general " chronological order is likely to
create additional work for the collector . Collectors will
have an envelope and will endeavor to locate it by
searching chronologically . Page 53 in the listing of
Machine 095 illustrates the difficulty. Number 09504g 1998 and 095-04h 1999 are located in the midst
of 1997 and 1995 sprays . 1998 and 1999 listing
follow two pages later. Its always exciting to find
unlisted items - I found several until I spent additional
time checking backward and forward through the
listing until I found my new finds listed elsewhere.
Slogan collectors will want to have this publication for
its listing of slogan cancels. While they are all here
there is no easy access to them. Identical slogans
have no common designation nor are they broken out
in a way which will assist the slogan collector in
finding them. Joel may justifiably comment that this
is beyond the scope of what he is trying to
accomplish with his listing but it is certainly a feature
that would appeal to slogan collectors (and might
draw them insideously into the world of inkjets).

TEST PJ .TYrl K )16 2/ JFT .11111J11/11
The illustration above is from Mich Gosselin's new
inkjet webpage at: http ://pages . infinit.net/inkjet/. If
you have access to the web it is worth a visit. If you
don't have access to the web from home you might try
your local public library. More and more of them offer
internet access.
All of the machines and their locations are listed and
illustrations are being added on a regular basis.
Unfortunately Weiner and Gosselin have developed
similar but different numbering systems so it is not
easy to move from one listing to the other to find a
specific cancel.
But these two tools offer exciting possibilities for the
inkjet collector.

Known K Towns
Cecil Coutts
Cecil Coutts has kindly sent the attached list of towns known to have used the Klussendorf canceller. He
suggests it as a starting point for checking early and latest known usages. If you have updates to the list
please send a photocopy of the update and it will be included in an upcoming newsletter.
If anyone has completed a more detailed study for any of the towns please send it to me for inclusion in a
later issue of the newsletter.

New? Dates for International and Universal Cancels by David Bree
Since the time when I first found myself looking more at cancels than at stamps, it has been the Internationals that have
always caught my eye. The only published reference I have found to these cancels is the excellent work by David
Sessions, The Early Rapid Cancelling Machines of Canada. His series of charts on dates of use have been a great guide
for me over the last few years. There are, however, a number of gaps in these records that I know many collectors
belonging to this group have filled in, as Bob Vogels demonstrated in his report on Berlin Internationals in Newsletter #3.
would like to see an updated list published from this pool of knowledge. In order to get things going I offer what new dates
I have found for these cancels. The new dates come from a piece I own, or have seen, and are followed by Session's
date. In addition to International dates I have also included the first Universal use for the International towns, again as
Sessions has done on occasion.

In addition to the above, Session also documents the early use of Montreal International die indicia. Montreal seems to be
unique in multi-machine towns in consistently using the same indicia for a period of time before switching to a new
combination for out-going mail. (was only one machine used at one time?). This continued from 1902 until late 1905.
Below I have expanded on sessions table for the use of these indicia. The main difference between this table and
Session's is that I have added a space for the dater type. This is because some of the gaps in Session's Table seemed to
be filled in if Montreal Rec'd (Session's Type Ga) are considered as being used to cancel out-going mail, as seems to be
the case for certain periods of use. I have also added specific days where I have seen them. In cases where Session's
range of observation goes beyond the specific dates I have seen, I have left his month only designations with mine seen
dates in brackets.
As can be seen from the table below there are still dates to be discovered to pin-point the turn-over time . The range of
dates presented should not be construed to mean that every single date between early and late dates recorded used the
indicia indicated , but rather no other indicia has been found by me ( and presumably Session ) in that date range . It will be
interesting to see if this consistent use of indica is borne out or whether new dates will show a fragmentation of this
pattern . The later possibility is demonstrated by the single 2D April 14 .03 use of a REC'D dater I have found . Was it used
instead of the IR or was it a second machine running at the same time? I would welcome information to fill in this table.

This letter from Canada Post in 1986 lists the location of the newly introduced IPS machines. While out of
date it provides some useful early history. For privacy reasons I have blocked the name of the recipient of
this letter. If that person so wishes it will be included in a later issue of the newsletter.

Dear Mr.
I an writing in resoonse to your request for a list of the places
where the new cancelling machines are going. Enclosed please find
said list. Although the list is operational, there may be a few
changes, as these changes are communicated to me I will forward them;
on to you.
I will also summarize the information that was given to me concerning
the machines themselves. The machines are the second phase of a
program that was started several years ano that saw many of our
cancelling machines replaced by the Klussendorf cancellers. These
machines, to be installed in 180 mechanized and non-mechanized
offices, are the MST model of the International Peripheral Systemmn
cancellers. The machines are manufactured in Pennsylvania and are
replacing Pitney Rowes machines which are no longer manufactured. The
new machines are considered to be high-speed, whereas the Kl ussendorfs
are considered to be low speed. The MST runs approximately NO
standard size letters a minute. The installation began in February
and is expected to be complete by the end of May.
The MST machines take die slugs which will he the same cancellation
dies that the Klussendorf machines take.
I hope the list and the above information are of use to you, should
you require further information about the machines of the Corporation
in general, please contact me again.
Yours sincerely,
;indy H. D ust

Patrick Awcock from Great Britian sends the following comments on Issue 4 of
the MCSG
I have just received bulletin 4 of MCSG and refer to two of your reports:- p7 I think the "new" IJPs
(022,031,040,124 and 125) are produced by IMP (Integrated Mail Processors as used in the UK). If this is
the case, the address (postal code/zipcode) would be known at the time of printing the cancellation,
assuming it was machine readable. The bar-code decodes as a US code 00213-4562-71-check 9, not
very realistic as a US code. Could it be a numerical equivalent of a Canadian postal code e.g. USA has
used two digit codes for letters (A=01, B=02, ....Z=26). What was the address on the item? (Editor's note:
it was a window envelope - no address available.)
p8 I think you should consider all the "112" IJPs to be the same, as the height is determined by the
distance of the envelope from the printing head - the closer the head is to the envelope, the more
squashed the characters will appear. It would appear that the print head was not securely fixed at the time
and was moving forward and back, since as you point out the height is not steadily decreasing, but
oscillating.
