Harris’ latest album, Black Bar Jukebox, debuted at Dizzy’s Club CocaCola and has received audience and critical acclaim since its official release in 2015. Allan Harris Allan Harris (Host) is a world-class singer, guitarist, and songwriter, perhaps best known for his interpretations of jazz standards. Harris’ smooth vocals and guitarstylings easily cross genres, from jazz to rock to blues. Tony Bennett has called Harris “my favorite singer,” and the New York Times raved about “the protean talent that is Allan Harris.” Harris has cultivated an international following throughout the United States, Europe, Russia, and the Far East. He is a threetime winner of the New York Nightlife Award for Outstanding Jazz Vocalist. Harris grew up in Brooklyn, surrounded by musicians, before moving to Pittsburgh as a teenager. While his guitar style was influenced by rock, his voice was always most comfortable singing the American Songbook. Harris moved to Atlanta and then to Miami, where he first met Tony Bennett, who encouraged him to return to New York in 1991. Harris has since been a featured soloist and producer of a threeyear jazz series at Sotheby’s, where he first teamed up with Tommy Flanagan. He has paid tribute to Nat “King” Cole at the Kennedy Center, where he recorded Long Live the King (2007). In 2007 Harris was awarded the Chamber Music of America Residency Grant for his Cross That River project, which toured 12 schools in Harlem. Since then, the Cross That River Band has performed in schools across the country, from Savannah, GA to San Angelo, TX. The Kennedy Center broadcast the per- Harris is a long-time supporter of the St. Mary’s Children’s Hospital, Guitars in the Classroom, and Challenge Aspen/America. As a Gibson Guitar featured artist, Harris and Ruby (his constant canine companion and the first dog music critic) are frequently found rehearsing at the Gibson Hit Factory and with The Allan Harris Band. Harris continues to play the top music clubs in New York City and tour around the world. JIM DENNIS COURTESY OF THE ARTIST Meet the Artists Kenny Washington Kenny Washington (Vocals), a native of New Orleans, developed a deep love for music at a young age and grew up singing and performing gospel music in church. He played saxophone and sang with the school band, and after graduating from high school he continued his studies in music at Xavier University. While at Xavier, he studied styles of music ranging from traditional and contemporary jazz to classical, rhythm and blues, and pop. Joining the honorary U.S. Navy Band in 1986, Washington performed and toured throughout the U.S. and in Asia, Russia, and Australia. After nine years as a musician in the U.S. Navy, Kenny moved to the San Francisco Bay Area, where he began performing and recording in various jazz clubs with other well known artists. He appeared in Roy Nathanson’s off-Broadway Jazz at Lincoln Center COURTESY OF THE ARTIST production of Fire at Keaton’s Bar and Grill, with Elvis Costello and Deborah Harry, in London and New York. Washington was the featured vocalist at San Francisco’s world famous Mark Hopkins Intercontinental Hotel’s Top of the Mark for eight years. Washington is the featured vocalist on saxophonist Michael O’Neill’s albums The Long and the Short of It and Still Dancin’. Washington is also one of the featured vocalists on the Slammin’ All Body Band album with Keith Terry. Washington is a jazz vocalist virtuoso, with a range that exceeds four octaves, who emulates the classic styles of Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah Vaughan, while infusing colors of Stevie Wonder and Donny Hathaway in a free, playful approach. A truly versatile artist, he is at home with both the blues and jazz, from liquid ballads to rapid-fire scatting. Andy Farber & His Orchestra Andy Farber & His Orchestra is one of New York City’s finest jazz orchestras, and they hold a regular seasonal gig at Birdland for a majority of the year. The hot and swinging orchestra regularly features vocalists Hillary Kole and Jerry Costanzo. Andy Farber, born in Huntington, Long Island, grew up playing music and listening to Art Blakey, Miles Davis, and Charlie Parker. At age ten, he studied with Budd Johnson, Chris Woods, and Dave Burns at jazz workshops, and at 13 he studied classical oboe and jazz saxophone at the Usdan Center for the Arts. Farber auditioned for Branford Marsalis when he was 17 years old and was accepted into the Tri-State McDonalds’ Jazz Ensemble, leading to performances with artists like Marsalis, Randy Brecker, and Steve Turre. Farber studied jazz composition at the Manhattan School of Music while also playing in David Berger’s Big Band and leading his own Hard Bop Repertory Company, a quintet that grew into the 15-piece Andy Farber & his Orchestra. They regularly performed original compositions at the West End Gate. In 1993 Farber collaborated on Jon Hendricks’ Boppin’ at the Blue Note, for which Farber wrote arrangements that included Hendricks and guests Al Grey, Wynton Marsalis, Benny Golson, Red Holloway, and Clark Terry. For the next three years, Farber served as music director, saxophonist, and arranger for the Jon Hendricks Explosion, which performed extensively. Farber then joined the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis on tenor saxophone. Since 1997, he has been freelancing as a saxophonist, arranger, and conductor for people like Wynton Marsalis, Jon Hendricks, Shirley Horn, Bobby Short, Ann Hampton Calloway, Frankie Laine, Alan Harris, Cynthia Scott, Billy Stritch, Stevie Wonder, B.B. King, Bob Dylan, Vanessa Williams, and Roseanna Vitro. Farber’s arrangements have been performed by The Boston Pops Orchestra, the Philly Pops Orchestra, the Boca Pops Orchestra, and several symphony orchestras throughout Europe. He has been a guest conductor of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, and in 2004 he made his symphonic conducting debut with the Bronx Arts Ensemble. In 1998 Farber released his debut album, Double A, with partner Andrew Williams, on After 9 Records. As a reedman, Farber has worked with the Duke Ellington Orchestra, Count Basie Orchestra, Artie Shaw Band, Harry James Band, Illinois Jacquet Big Band, Vince Giordano’s Nighthawks, Bob Dorough, Marcus Roberts, Bobby Short, The Onyx Jazz at Lincoln Center Club Sextet, and more. He currently leads Andy Farber & his Swing Mavens, a ninepiece ensemble fronted by jazz vocalist Jerry Costanzo that performs Farber’s arrangements and compositions in addition to standards. The band can be heard on Farber’s latest release, Bluesectomy (NJR Records), and at gigs around New York and the East Coast. Farber also composes and produces music for television and film at Duotone Audio Group. Jazz at Lincoln Center Jazz at Lincoln Center is dedicated to inspiring and growing audiences for jazz. With the world-renowned Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra and a comprehensive array of guest artists, Jazz at Lincoln Center advances a unique vision for the continued development of the art of jazz by producing a year-round schedule of performance, education, and broadcast events for audiences of all ages. These productions include concerts, national and international tours, residencies, weekly national radio programs, television broadcasts, recordings, publications, an annual high school jazz band competition and festival, a band director academy, jazz appreciation curricula for students, music publishing, children’s concerts and classes, lectures, adult education courses, student and educator workshops, a record label, and interactive websites. Under the leadership of Managing and Artistic Director Wynton Marsalis, Chairman Robert J. Appel, and Executive Director Greg Scholl, Jazz at Lincoln Center produces thousands of events each season in its home in New York City, Frederick P. Rose Hall, and around the world. Rose Hall February 2016 ROSE THEATER Monty Alexander & Friends: Sinatra at 100 With Kurt Elling February 12–13 at 8pm At 17 years old, a serendipitous encounter with Frank Sinatra and his pal Jilly Rizzo changed the trajectory of pianist Monty Alexander’s career forever: Alexander would soon become the house pianist for the famed Jilly’s club in New York City and develop a unique relationship with its most famous patron: Frank Sinatra. With the help of Grammy Award–winning and DownBeat Critics Poll-dominating singer Kurt Elling, he will share stories from a treasured and rare perspective. A masterful pianist, Alexander’s career spans five decades and includes collaborations with some of the most important figures in jazz and an illustrious recording career as a leader. This Valentine’s weekend treat is sure to satisfy both nostalgic and contemporary tastes. Christian McBride/Henry Butler, Steven Bernstein & The Hot 9 February 26–27, 2016 at 8pm Two world-class bands explore the relationship between jazz and American popular song. The double bill is headlined by bassist Christian McBride. The master musician has appeared on over 300 recordings and is considered one of the most accomplished bassists alive. Now a leader of his own Grammy Award-winning Big Band, featuring a staggering and diverse lineup of top musicians, McBride simultaneously shows off his compositional talent and unmatched ability to drive a band. The other portion of the concert features Henry Butler, Steven Bernstein & The Hot 9, featuring New Orleans piano virtuoso Henry Butler. Described by the New York Times as “both historically aware and fully prepared to cut loose,” this exhilarating group introduces the hot jazz of years past to the endless possibilities of the modern jazz landscape. Free pre-concert discussion nightly at 7pm. THE APPEL ROOM Cécile McLorin Salvant February 12–14 at 7pm & 9:30pm It doesn’t get more perfect than singer Cécile McLorin Salvant for a Valentine’s Day–inspired performance. An innovative singer with extraordinary soul, intuition, and deep character, Salvant is the next great jazz vocalist in the lineage of Ella Fitzgerald, Betty Carter, and Dianne Reeves. The 2010 Thelonious Monk International Vocal Competition winner and 2014 and 2016 Grammy Award nominee has become a Jazz at Lincoln Center regular, and her growing reputation for having an exceptional command of diverse and challenging repertoire will serve audiences well for this romance-laden occasion. March 2016 THE APPEL ROOM Moonglow: The Magic of Benny Goodman March 4–5 at 7pm & 9:30pm The story of jazz’s first popular integrated band is told by scriptwriter and seven-time Emmy Awardwinner Geoffrey Ward (Ken Burns’ Jazz), narrated live by host Wendell Pierce (HBO’s Treme and The Wire), and performed by an ensemble of pianist Christian Sands (in the role of Teddy Wilson), drummer Sammy Miller (Gene Krupa), 20-year-old vibraphone sensation Joel Ross (Lionel Hampton), and a host of special guest clarinetists. Peter Anderson, Will Anderson, Patrick Bartley, and Janelle Reichman each take a turn representing the unparalleled voice of Benny Goodman. These unique and informative performances will feature live music and spoken word as informative, inspiring, and emotionally stirring joint crafts as they channel the “King of Swing” and tell the story of his groundbreaking band.
