FROM THE PRINCIPAL
It hardly seems like we started the year and we are half way through!! Report cards were
sent home on Friday. If you did not receive it, please contact the office to obtain a copy. All
teachers are available for interviews for any students. I suggest that parents take up this
offer to discuss your student’s progress and report if you are concerned about anything.
STAFFING UPDATE
At the start of next term, Ms Gothmann will be on leave and Ms Martina Leiter will be the
Deputy Principal for Prep – Year 2. Ms Sarah McCauley will also be on leave and Ms Ann
Speck will continue working with her class 2SM. Ms Megan Jobson is moving with her
husband so 4NS will have a new teacher on Wednesday each week, working with Mrs Nikki
Sandford.
Thank you to staff for fantastic work last week – Disco, Year 4 evening, the Eisteddfod.

Keep a watch on our school these holidays
Parents and students can help take care of our school by reporting any suspicious afterhours activity to School Watch on - 13 17 88. By keeping an eye out we can work together
to create a safer school community and help to reduce vandalism, theft and arson in our
school. If you see something suspicious, please don’t intervene. Call the School Watch
number and let the local police or State Government Protective Security Service deal with
the matter.

School holidays are the perfect time for students to pick up a book and commit to the
Premier’s Reading Challenge. The reading period closes in early September, so there is

School Wide Positive Behaviour Support
This week our focus is Be Responsible in the School Environment. In this lesson, we
address a number of ways that students can ensure they contribute to keeping our school
clean and tidy by:
Cleaning up
1. Help the teacher tidy the classroom.
2. Put things away where they belong.
3. Put rubbish in the bin.
Look after our grounds and buildings
1. Walk around the gardens.
2. Don’t draw on walls or buildings.
3. Report any problems to an adult.
Farewell…for now!
This week is my final week at school before taking some time off for maternity leave. While
I am enormously excited about the new chapter ahead for my husband and I, there is also a
significant tinge of sadness as I will be leaving behind the work (and people) that bring me
much pleasure and professional satisfaction. There is no doubt that Freshwater State
School is the best school I have ever worked at, and the teachers, students and parents are
the reason why. I look forward to seeing you all again when I return to Freshie in 2016.

YEAR 3 – 6 INTERHOUSE ATHLETICS CARNIVAL
We are holding our Inter-house Athletics Carnival at Smithfield State High School this Friday, the 26th June. All
children born 2003-2006 will compete and travel by bus departing school at 8:50am and returning at approx.
2:45pm. Notes have been sent home and they are due back to school as soon as possible please. Children who
have not returned this form cannot travel by bus so it’s important to ensure your child has returned their note.
Children need to wear their Sports House uniform, hat, sunscreen/zinc (no texta marks) and appropriate footwear.
Spikes may be worn but for events only, they are not to be worn as general footwear.
Please ensure your child has ample food and water for the day. The following items are on sale and there is no
need to pre-order.

AUDITIONS FOR FETE
Calling all our talented performers! Students in Years 1-7 will have the chance to perform at the Fete. Preps will get to experience the
talent show from the audience. If you would like to perform in the talent quest at the fete then please plan and practice over the
holidays, especially if you are working on a group performance. Audition forms will be available from the Library after the holidays.
Make sure you put your music on a USB and check that dance teachers are happy for you to use their work. Have fun preparing, we
are looking forward to seeing what you come up with!

YEAR 4 ACTIVITY NIGHT

On Tuesday 16 June 2015 the year four classes held an activity night at Freshwater SS. We all wore denim jeans of
skirts, checked shirts to fit with the Aussie theme. The activity night started at 5.30pm with a sausage sizzle. It was
yummy! The teachers and some parents helped prepare and cook the BBQ. We also had juice if we wanted some. At
6.15pm Mrs Dixon called all of the students to their sitting area to prepare for the activities. First we had to get on the
stage in three lines. All the year four students sang ‘We Are Australian’ by The Seekers and then recited two poems.
They were the first verse from the ‘Man From Snowy River’ by A.B. Patterson and ‘My Country’ by Dorethea Mackellar.
There was also a video clip running on a big screen showing the tall ships coming through Sydney Harbour and a lot of
outback footage that matched the verses from ‘We Are Australian’. We had learnt a lot about early Australia in history in
semester one. We then moved from the stage to the dancing area and did an Aussie Bush Dance called the Brown Jug
Polka. It was great fun. After this all year four did the Hokey Pokey. The teachers and students had organised a surprise
for all the parents and friends who attended. The students were told to go and ask their supporters to come down and
join them in the dancing. We all did the Hokey Pokey. It was great fun. After this Mrs Dixon thanked everyone for coming
and making our Activity Night such a success. It was time for us to go and the teachers stayed and packed up.

YEAR 5 CAMP AT LAKE TINAROO
Have you ever been on a school camp? Well here’s your chance to find out all about it! The Year 5’s went to Lake
Tinaroo for 3 days last week and we had a fantastic time. We participated in a variety of activities including orienteering,
canoeing, catapult making, fencing (Enguard!), archery and low ropes. These activities require balance, self confidence
and trust. While canoeing you learn how to paddle your canoe and turn around in the water . Not to mention how to tip
Mrs Wilson overboard and making her swim in the cold lake! During Archery Ms McCarthy was the ONLY teacher to get
a bullseye. All the other activities were challenging yet heaps of fun. We also had a disco where lots of people, including
the teachers, wore a funny wig. On the final night Mr Gubby gave us a Trivia night and he was accompanied by Mr Pont
on the keyboard. We highly recommend Year 5 camp to all future Year 5’s. It is heaps of fun and you don’t have time to
miss your mum. Thanks to all the teachers for taking care of us and for all the parents for letting us go.

YEAR 5 DRAMA
In Term 3 all Year 5 students will be participate in an In-School Primary Drama program.
This program has been specifically designed in line with the Australian National Curriculum and is part of the individual
students’ end of semester assessment. During this unit of work the students will work alongside The Young Company’s
team of theatre directors. Freshwater State School has had an ongoing relationship with The Young Company which
allows us to access this Drama program at a reduced cost. Each student has been invoiced $50.00 and a letter detailing
this program has already been sent home with your child. This note also includes details of performances dates. Please
check your child’s school bag and if you haven’t already received your note, spare copies are available in the Office.
THANKS P&C!
At the last P/C meeting, the group endorsed a school based decision to purchase guided reading books for teachers to
use in their classrooms. The P/C matched the school budget, dollar for dollar, so $14 000 worth of books was purchased.
So an absolutely marvellous band of parent helpers, led by Ms Leah, Mrs Shepherd and Mrs Fuller, have now covered
and barcoded around 1000 books for the FSS children to use. A total of over 150 reading boxes now sit on our shelves in
a range of reading levels, so our teachers are now equipped with even more appropriate resources to improve our
children’s reading. What a wonderful team effort! Special thanks to the wonderful parents and teacher aides who so
eagerly helped to get this time consuming task done in record time – 6 weeks! Thanks to Ms Leah and Mrs Shepherd for
coordinating the job and to Mrs McDonald for spending lots of time ordering the right books for our children. Also our
dedicated P/C for supporting this initiative – thanks so much!! Happy reading everyone.

GOLD COAST SUNS GIRLS REGIONAL FINAL IN TOWNSVILLE
Congratulations to Lili Collins, Emilie Davis, Grace Johnson, Freja Brown, Makaela Morgan, Madalyn Moore, Ronnee
Peckham, April Phillips-McMahon, Kira Yakich, Melissa Webb, Taylor Heyne, Jennai Malaquin, Abigail Farrell and
Sophie Fysh for their amazing effort and commitment to our girls AFL team this year. These girls travelled down and
back to Townsville yesterday to play Kirwan State School in the regional final. Kirwan got the early jump on Freshie, but
the girls never gave up and tackled hard to ensure the last three quarters were evenly matched. Kirwan SS will now head
to the state final on the Gold Coast in August. Huge thanks to Mrs Buttenshaw for giving up many lunchtimes to coach
the girls. Their skills and knowledge of the game have improved immensely. Also, thanks to our cheer squad who made
the trip down to cheer us on – Mr and Mrs Johnson senior, Mrs Johnson, Mr Farrell and Mr and Mrs Peckham.
Well done girls – your behaviour and sportsmanship was exemplary. Go Freshie!

FUSION TENNIS SCHOOL CHALLENGE
Last Saturday the second round on the Fusion Tennis School Challenge was held at Trinity Beach Tennis Club.
Congratulations to Sergio Deuque, Max and Angus Carpenter, Dylan Northcott, Sabrina Keisey-Calding, William and
Angus Cleland, Silas Gregory, Bianca and Will Poropat, Stevie Moore, Ava Bramham-Whyte and Ella Anais-Monk for
representing Freshwater SS so well at this event. Freshwater improved from the first challenge and was placed 2nd
overall. Our students played with great sportsmanship against students from TAS, Caravonica, Redlynch, St. Andrews,
Holy Cross, Mother of Good Counsel, Peace Lutheran and Trinity Beach. Well done to our tennis representatives. The
next School Challenge is next term – more details later. Anyone can join in and play for our school – no experience
necessary!

Tsuyu - rainy season - begins in June in Japan and usually lasts for 4 weeks. It is welcomed by many farmers as
they need the rice fields to fill with water so they can begin planting the rice. Children who want to scare away
the rain make paper prayer dolls called Teru Teru Boozu. They are made using a cotton ball, a tissue and string,
and look similar to ghosts when a face is drawn on. These are hung beside the windows in the house.
Sayounara Sawa Sensei! This week is Sawa’s final week at Freshwater. We thank her for a great term and wish
her all the best for the future!

Tips for helping children connect
Here are some ideas for helping your child connect with your family and friends, and people in the neighbourhood and community:







Practise social skills – for example, saying hello, using ‘please’ and ‘thank you’, saying ‘excuse me’ and waiting for your turn in a
conversation. Your child will watch the way you talk with others and follow your example.
Look at photos of family and friends with your child to spark her interest in the relationships that are important to your family.
Encourage your child to ask his grandparents and family friends about when they were young.
Make opportunities for relatives or family friends to have time with your child.
Walk or cycle to a local park and let your child play on the equipment. Being out in your neighbourhood gives you and your child the
chance to meet new people.
Get involved in community events and take your child along with you. Working bees at school, community gardens, fetes and festivals
give you and your child an opportunity to connect with people who are working together.
Show your child that connection is a two-way thing. When you work with others and help them, they’ll do the same for you. For example,
you might collect your neighbours’ mail when they’re on holiday and then they collect your mail when you’re away.
If your child has special needs, try to foster her relationship and your relationship with people who help to care for her – for example, carers,
teacher aides, therapists, doctors and so on. For example, you might help her to choose a photo of a special holiday to share with her carer.

We are still urgently seeking a convenor
for the Cent Sale stall, it can be a
parent who has a child in any class. We
have sourced all the prizes, we just need
assistance to recruit the volunteers to
manage the stall from 3pm—6pm. If you
